Technical Area

The Technical Area- Rooney Drops Deeper at Everton

The 6-1 home hammering at the hands of Man City has clearly had an effect. Humbled in front of their own fans, with Sir Alex Ferguson describing it as the “worst result in my history”, United’s line-up for last weekend’s trip to Goodison raised more than a few eyebrows.

The role assigned to Wayne Rooney will have many a Fantasy manager fretting. With Fergie seeking extra solidity, Rooney dropped into central midfield, allowing Javier Hernandez to lead the line as the lone frontman but, ahead of a favourable run of fixtures, it’s the last thing his Fantasy owners want to contemplate. Tonight’s Champions League line-up against Otelul Galati will only further deepen the concern, with Rooney once again selected in the United midfield, with Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov leading the line. We take a look at Rooney’s last two league games to see just how they differ:

Average Position

A look at Rooney’s average position in the City game (above) shows Rooney’s (10) tendency to drop deep, even when United play 4-4-2. With City so much in control, though, Danny Welbeck (19) was also deep- both Ashley Young (18) and Nani (17) stayed high and wide and with a far from compact shape, United were torn apart by their clinical opponents.

The Everton match (above) shows Rooney was, on average, in an almost identical position when in possession, despite his new midfield role. The main difference, though, is how this compares in relation to the team mates around him. There is no width, no players further forward- Hernandez (14) dropped deep when on the ball and is obscured by Rooney (10) here. United’s defence-minded outlook offered little ahead of Rooney for him to make any significant attacking contribution.

Passing

Against City, Rooney made a total of 57 passes. A look at the chalkboard again shows how he came deep to link with the midfield, with 47% of all passes coming in the middle of the central third of the pitch. Remarkably, this is almost identical to the Everton match; here, Rooney also makes 57 passes, with 49% coming in the same area.

It’s when you look at the other areas of the field that the difference is more substantial; against City, for example, 28% of Rooney’s passes were from positions on the flank. With Young and Nani providing plenty width, he had far less a tendency to move from the centre in comparison to his display at Goodison- 38% of his distribution came from the wings against David Moyes’ side as he sought space in order to make an impact.

The most significant area for Rooney, though, the centre of the final third, shows a definite decrease in attacking potential over the two games. Against City, 22% (13% + 4% + 5%) of Rooney’s passes came in this vital area as he prompted and probed, looking for openings- against Everton, Rooney’s impact in this crucial part of the field halved, down to 11% (7% +4%). With Fergie reining in his star forward’s attacking sensibilities, their potency clearly diminished.

A look at United’s preferred passing in each game is also instructive. Against City, Rooney received 15 passes from Welbeck- the most balls from any team mate- and played 6 passes to his fellow-forward- a total of 21 passes between the United frontmen.

In the Goodison game, though, it was a different matter; Rooney received more passes (7) from Jonny Evans than any other United player, with Phil Jones and Patrice Evra next best on 6; an indication of how deep he dropped to gain possession at times. Ahead of him, Rooney barely linked up with Hernandez at all; he played just 2 successful passes to the Mexican, receiving 3 in return. Compare that to the interplay with Welbeck against City, and there’s a definite drop in attacking intent.

Match Stats

Post-match, Fergie explained the thinking behind his decision to move Rooney back:

It’s about time we won 1-0. That was the aspect of the game that pleased me most, that and restricting Everton to very few chances. We had to do something about the fact that opponents have been getting too many opportunities to score against us in recent weeks. We knew we had to reduce that number if we are going to win the league, and reinforcing the midfield was one way of doing it. We brought Wayne back to increase our numbers in midfield.

Perhaps a look at the statistics will make the United boss think twice, though. In no way did his side restrict Everton’s chances: over the season so far, they have averaged 19 shots against per game- on Saturday, Everton fired in 19 goal attempts again. If anything, his tactics only had a detrimental effect on his own side’s endeavors going forward- United have averaged 16 shots per game so far this season, whereas at Goodison last weekend, they mustered 7 all game.

Indeed, David De Gea saved more shots (8) than United managed over the entire ninety minutes. From a central midfield position, Rooney had just 1 shot against his old club- not what you’d want from a 12.2 Fantasy prospect, particularly with the likes of Robin Van Persie tearing up the top-flight right now.

Clearly, Fergie holds no fears of utilising Rooney in a different role if he feels it’s beneficial to the team as a whole- a spell out wide a couple of seasons back proves testament to that. The uncertainty has clearly had an effect- so far, Rooney has been sold on by 72,000 Fantasy managers this week, despite a home clash with Sunderland up next. Tonight’s performance will give his 41% of Fantasy owners plenty to mull over- another game from deep without any attacking rewards could cause many to rethink over the forthcoming international break.

Anyone think Ronaldo is actually better than Messi? Goal ratio better, heading better, free kicks better. Messi is undoubtedly better to watch, but overall?

Have this argument frequently with a mate of mine who maintains that Ronaldo is better. He argues that Ronaldo has done it in more leagues and teams and is better on the international stage than Messi.
Messi just has a qualitative brilliance about though that you can't quite pin-point. It's hard to explain, at least for me, how he is better than Ronaldo but he just is.

I love Ronnie compared to Messi, and agree that he trumps Messi on dead balls and heading. But I can't recall him ever dribbling through a defence, which I think requires more skill..

I am biased towards Ronaldo from his United days and miss him from both a footballing and Fanatasy perspective in the UK. He's in the form of his life...and wouldn't disagree with the your statement WildRover....

He undoubtedly does posses some better attributes, but he is by no means a better player overall. One of the main reasons is Messi always produces his very best in the biggest matches for Barca, which Ronaldo certainly doesn’t for Madrid. In terms of raw attributes, Messi is a better dribbler, faster with the ball, has ridiculously good vision, and is an assist machine, he also generally scores more beautiful goals. Ronaldo is unfortunate though, because in almost any other decade, he would be the best on the planet..

Hmm, really? Ronaldo has done little in World Cups. Neither has Messi, but he was actually very good in 2010, despite being brutally man-marked in the group stages. And he was good at the '10 Copa, before Argies went out on pens. End of the day, the Argentina national team is a shambles defensively, and is terribly run, Maradona playing Jonas Gutierrez at right back for example.!

As part of my argument I decided to compare the relative WC and continent based competions of both nations since each player emerged - virtually identical.
I guess you would say the other 10 Messi plays with for the Argies better than Portugal but not a lot in it.

cant believe you are having the argument. Messi is the best player in the world. Ronaldo is the 2nd best and he is unlucky because in any other generation he may be the best.

Messi is on a different planet to everyone else. He has the grace of Zidane but at twice the speed, his goal ratio is phenomenal and his assist record is amazing too.

Messi is only 24, he will be as the greatest player of all time

"he will be as the greatest player of all time"

Will he have to win a world cup to prove this? I know a player can't do anything about where they are born but Argentina are one of the biggest national teams on the planet and have plenty of capable players. Maradona did it with (arguably) a less talented group

he has a few world cups left in him, considering how much the english media bang on about England underachieving in Major tournaments, Argentina have an incrediby talented pool of players to choose from and it would probably help if they didnt get a fat clueless druggy to manage them, at their potential they are one very few teams in the world that i think can compete with spain!

Alex ferguson on Rooney playing in midfield:

As for Wayne Rooney, it's a short-term thing, him playing in midfield. We are re-organising the middle of the park with so many players missing."

Short term but maybe an indication he may still be used in midfield v sunderland with players still coming back to fitness?

    Rooney on playing in midfield:

Either way, I feel I'm a good enough footballer to play anywhere on the pitch. That's not being big-headed. If the manager wants me to play there, I will.

Interesting article in the summer about Rooney being the best replacement they could have for Scholes. It's a shame he is a very, very good striker as he does solve the need for a creative, tackling central midfielder that Man U have.

    Vorm/Given
Komp, Bos, Enrique, Simpson, De Laet.

    1.6m in the bank

Due to Komp's ban I reckon I need to sort out De Laet and at some time soon, Bos.

My idea is De Laet > BAE (I know... Totty def!) as he rotates excellently with Enrique

Then later Bos > Brown/Turner as they obviouslt rotate well with Simps.

That'd leave me with a def heavy team this gw... can't see what else to do. Advice?

I'd get BAE in this week, and sell Bosingwa next week. If you're looking for cheaper than Brown/Turner, you could get Wilkinson?
Kompany's a season keeper for me. What with City's rotation in attack, you can atleast always rely on Bad K to start.

Your midfield is great, with VDV and Silva in it. Forwards are also great for this week. Maybe sell one of Suarez or Adebayor after this week though?

Sometimes the problem with def heavy teams is that they lack something in midfield, but even if you get BAE, you definitely wouldn't be weakened anywhere else. As it's only going to be that heavy for one week, it;s worth it. Then sell Bosingwa afterwards to make your defence reasonably priced again

        Cheers Demi & Conner,

BAE was/is for this week, may be tempted by Drenthe (Pretov out) after the international break so Bos may have to wait (injuries aside). Was always going to keep Komp.

Will keep Ade for his fixtures and Suarez for his "potential" (heh) as I reckon I'd need to take hits to get them out taking into account what I need to do elsewhere. Also, after 2 hard fixtures L'pool don't look too bad.

    VDV, Silva, Ramsey, Petrov (Dyer)

A whopping 4.7 in the bank leaving most players open to me. Man U cover looks like the way to go but who and for who? My two worst defenders have good fixtures (and to complicate matters the worse one has the btter fixture). There are no real Man U midfielders who are a good choice although Nani could be worth a punt. With that cash I would upgrade one of either Ade or Ramsey to a Utd player as coverage for Arsenal and Spurs is already there. Personally I'd ditch Ade for Rooney as he didn't look too sharp against QPR on Sunday

        Ramsey was my transfer in!
But Who of United? Coverage only works when you have good options, Rooney is POO by the sounds of it and Hernandez is not a bad option but is a rotation risk and is 10 milli on a Striker without penos who very rarely gets assists alongside his goals.

Ok so is your next move a FT or a hit? I'd still go for Rooney as he won't be playing in mf all season and has proven to be involved with most attacks when Utd are on the front foot. Like you say Hernandez might be rotated (they have Berba, Welbeck and to a lesser extent, Owen), and I suppose Nani hasn't been very reliable recently. With so much spare cash at your disposal and with no Utd coverage I can't see how Rooney isn't your best option. My opinion of course !

Yeah course it's your opinion and I thank you for it!
I know Rooney won't be playing in MF all season but I'm 90% sure he will be at the weekend with Welbz and Chica supposed to be rested tonight.
Rooney could be a great option but still not sure.

Why must the Manchester clubs prove so frustrating when it comes to attacking options (in FF terms) ??? Least you've got a lot of good options open to you with that sort of bank balance. All the best pal 😉

Nasri 90mins? Grrr. I really need to get rid of that guy. Cant see him playing much this weekend. But don't want to risk getting in Silva just yet, being as he took a knock. Over the next 2 GW's how does this look for -4

This week: If Silva declared fit. Bos-> Evans, Nasri->Silva
    If not. Save transfer.

Next week. If already done 2 transfers. Petrov -> Drenthe.
    If not. All 3.

Even if Rooney is in midfield, his attacking instincts will still bring him to hunt the goals surely?

Also if he is on pens/fks he must still be good value, (he was essential at the start of the season)?

rooney at 12 odd million playing out of position in midfield makes it tempting to hit the transfer button. Alot of money invested in someone not playing up top when he is meant to be one of my 3 strikers. Maybe welbeck is a good shout over coming weeks?

ha but you said above rooney's fixtures are ridiculous, so if he is:

        a. great fixtures
        b. pens/fks
        c. attacking instincts/poacher even if playing deeper
        d. playing for the second / third highest-scoring team

        I think he's still essential.

Tend to agree...Fergie's gone slightly into panic mode reverting Rooney to midfield, but it seems a highly flexible approach and you would think he would be less circumspect against the likes of Sunderland at home. Saying that, Norwich opened up United at Old Trafford....

Looking at it from another perspective - the likes of Fletcher, Anderson and co have to dig in more consistently; whilst Evra has looked highly vulnerable at left-back over the last season or two.

I like the look of Pea but Ade could still do well (I do have him). Silva now looks to be getting over priced to get in although I will not sell him unless injured. Cheapish mids are rife... choose the right one and Bob's your uncle, choose the wrong one and...

Like getting Hernandez in, especially with Rooney playing deeper. Not so sure on Nani. I'm tempted myself, but didn't look great tonight. Could go mental against Sunderland, in which case we'll all be rushing for him, or could be benched. I've been riding with Mata for a while, so I might recommend hopping on that now.

Evening guys. Looking for some advice (isn't everyone?)

This is the team I'm going into the weekend with

    Given
    Bosingwa Enrique Simpson
    Petrov Walters Silva VDV
    RVP (C) Bendtner Rooney (VC)

Not really liking it for this week but at the same time am currently thinking no transfers. What do we think?

Considerations have been, Bosingwa to Jones and Petrov to Drenthe. Or Bosingwa to Walker and Petrov to Ramsey. Or should I just stick for this week and hope for the best?

i'd stick i think if i were you andy, bos has a good chance of a cleanie and assist this week at blackburn, petrovs last stand (same here) maybe bendtner for a.n.other but then you will just want him back real soon so again a stick.

Bosingwa won't get a cleanie IMO but an assist is quite possible. Wouldn't rule a goal out either!

Do we think Terry is likely to be left out? Bosingwa Ivanovic Luiz Cole perhaps?

Textbook SuperDunny post saying Blackburn will score this weekend. To be fair, you are usually right.

Absolutely no chance that Terry won't start.

oh don't worry about it 😀

If i got offended by people slagging off Rovers i wouldn't bother getting up in the morning! Chelsea might keep a CS i just think it may be a decent time to play them.

That's what I'm thinking re: Bos. Surely Chelsea are due a cleanie sooner or later.

Bendtner doesn't have a great fixture but has been doing ok and upcoming fixtures are good.

I may just stick and then do 3 transfers next week if needed. Done that a couple of times this season and it's worked out ok.

With Fabio playing tonight and Rafael back in training I'm already worried about possible rotation to jones who imo is less likely to be rotated than Evans so won't be going there. I got stuck too often last season trying to get cheap defenders from big teams and then making lots of transfers.

        Only Djourou worked out

Then again, 4.5m it might just be worth the risk.

I have a similar team but unfortunately can't afford Bosingwa > Jones this week, Considering Evans as an alternative if he looks likely to start this weekend.

I'd keep Petrov for the Stoke game, especially considering they'll have played in Europe tomorrow, and tend to do badly immediately after European commitments.

I'd probably just do Bosingwa to Jones.

    Have two quieres-

    1. Will Adam be a good punt just for one week??(dont have any liverpool coverage and probably will wildcard after this gameweek?

    2. What is the best GK combo till the next wildcard?was tempting to Howard/Vorm Combo.

      1. Adam is on penalties and free-kicks so yes.
      2. Not fussed on Everton keeping cleansheets, but if you fancy Everton to do so then that combo works out...after this week...

      1. Adam is a good punt especially if you already have Suarez(because he is a better punt)

      2. Howard, Ruddy. They rotate well till next WC with Ruddy only needing to feature twice so is worth saving. Depends if you had Vorm from the start though as they both started at 4m.
