The Digest – Gameweek Eleven

The leader of the pack delivers for Wolves. Bolton tear into a leg-weary Stoke to avenge an FA Cup humiliation and Robin Van Persie takes a hit, as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are given every reason to dislike Mondays…

The Player

We’ve waited for Jamie O’Hara to deliver. For weeks we’ve had him bubbling under as a Scout Pick’s consideration, pondering when his contribution to the Wolves effort will translate into Fantasy returns. We suspected it would come as soon as Mick McCarthy’s side could turn the corner and earn their first win since gameweek two. Almost inevitably, lowly Wigan were on the receiving end of a Wolves revival with O’Hara the protagonist in a 3-1 win.

A 15-point FPL haul was signposted. Our Members can see for themselves how O’Hara matches up to some of the leading Fantasy targets this season – how his creativity and threat are integral to Wolves’ chances of saving their Premier League status.

With an FPL valuation of 5.7, O’Hara’s goal and two assists seems likely to rouse interest. Right now, however, investment in O’Hara is being dwarfed by the interest shown in this weekend’s other midfield revelations – Bolton’s Chris Eagles and Norwich’s Anthony Pilkington. Both are cheaper than the Wolves man and have also shown greater consistency when it comes to returns this season.

It’s difficult to make a case for O’Hara then, although we’re pretty certain that if McCarthy can get the Wolves ship on steady waters, O’Hara will be back amongst the points on a regular basis.

The Team

Having slipped to eight defeats in nine league games, Bolton unleashed a goal frenzy on a weary Stoke City at the Reebok. Owen Coyle’s men were relentless, led by the attacking verve of reborn Chris Eagles and the recalled Ivan Klasnic.

The Croatian had a point to prove having dropped down the pecking order following his foolish red card in the gameweek five defeat to Norwich. Since then David Ngog has emerged as a contender up front, while Coyle has dropped Kevin Davies to the bench as he juggled his formation and tactics. Klasnic was back in the lineup against Stoke however, with Kevin Davies alongside him. The Potters, suffering a Europa League hangover once again, had no answer to Bolton’s desire to banish the demons of last season’s humiliating FA Cup semi-final defeat.

The emergence of Chris Eagles is of particular interest to Fantasy managers. The winger has become a major component in Coyle’s plans and, having completed 90 minutes in the last four league games, appears to have surpassed Martin Petrov as a reliable creative force, with a heightened goal threat thrown in.

Three goals and four assists is a healthy return for a midfielder priced at just 5.3 in the FPL game. While Petrov languished on the bench, Eagles seized the opportunity to take centre stage. It’s hard to say how long his flame will burn, but with Bolton entering a run of favourable enough fixtures, short-term investment seems sound.

The Talking Point

Monday morning brought a chain of events that boiled the frustration of many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers. Having delivered another huge points haul in the 3-0 win over West Brom, Robin Van Persie lost the assist awarded for Thomas Vermaelen’s goal and dropped in the EA PPI rankings, denying him a single bonus point. Those who captained Van Persie suffered an 8-point drop in their total – green arrows suddenly turned into red – I speak from experience.

It’s hard to pin down the real issues at play here. Is it frustration with the criteria used to judge an assist? The fact that a touch from Gervinho would be enough to cancel out the cross from Van Persie which eventually found it’s way to Vermaelen’s boot?

Perhaps it’s more the process of the points being removed, the fact that it took forty-eight hours for the points awarded on Saturday, to be stripped on Monday morning.

The fact is, Gervinho touched Van Persie’s cross. That was not only the judgement of the Press Association after Monday’s review. It was also the call made by Opta who also awarded a “Goal Assist” to the Ivorian on Saturday night.

Like it or not, then, no Fantasy game in the land gave the assist to Van Persie – it’s not included in the Sky game, it’s not included in the Fantasy League and, while the Telegraph give Van Persie a “Key Contribution”, they also award the same to Gervinho – recognising that he got a touch on the Dutchman’s cross.

We had the Van Persie assist for forty-eight hours but it was never ours to have. We can argue it – re-examine footage but where do we draw the line with such disputes?

When two data providers, charged with supplying correct and accurate data for statistical purposes both say Gervinho touched it, it’s clear we’re fighting a losing battle. The same could be said of Gareth Bale’s “goal” at Fulham – the Press Association don’t stand alone here either – Bale’s goal has been awarded by Opta and all the major Fantasy Games. At what point do we have to shut up and put up?

It also seems unlikely that the new definition of an assist within the FPL ruleset is to blame in the Van Persie’s case. There were examples last season, when this definition wasn’t around, where the slightest of touches took an assist from the supplier of a cross. If an attacking player gets a touch on a cross, a flicked header for example – they gain the assist if a goal is then resultantly scored, not the cross provider. We should be used to this by now.

Van Persie’s cross was intended for Gervinho – the Ivorian fluffed his lines, missed the cross but appeared to divert the ball with his back leg after swinging with the right. A bungled, unintentional intervention but, in terms of the significance of the touch, just how far apart is this from a flick off a player’s hairline on the near post? For all the frustration, once we accept that Gervinho touched the ball, it’s hard to argue against the assist going his way.

Unless of course we push for the whole definition of an assist to be changed. Perhaps such a touch from Gervinho shouldn’t be rewarded? After all, he never intended for the ball to end up Vermaelen’s path when he swung his leg.

Interestingly, Opta have two definitions for an assist; a “goal assist” -which Gervinho earned- and an “intentional assist” – which clearly he didn’t. Do we need and want a similar system applied to the FPL – should we only reward a player if he genuinely intended to set up the scorer?

Perhaps we want the Telegraph’s Key Contribution instead – a system where more than one player can be awarded points for their role in creating a goal – in this case both Van Persie and Gervinho would have benefited.

I’m not sure that a perfect solution is available, but we can and will debate this further. While the definition of an assist in the FPL is clear, it does create cases that cause frustration and perhaps offer the need for things to be re-examined.

Personally, I’m far more frustrated by assists being awarded after positive intervention from a defender (a clearance). Demba Ba’s assist for Ryan Taylor’s goal against Everton being the latest case in point. That’s my own crusade and one I’ll go on pursuing.

Don’t get me wrong. While I’m firmly in the camp that we have to accept the fact that Van Persie did not earn an assist, I’m also aware that things are far from perfect.

It’s worth noting that the FPL did act as a result of Monday’s events by adding clarity to the rules concerning the revision of decisions. They now state the following:

“All assists are reviewed daily but remain provisional until verified by the Press Association. For the avoidance of doubt, points awarded in-game are subject to change until the Gameweek closes. Once a Gameweek closes, no further adjustments to points will be made.”

Better. Nobody can be in doubt now that, until the bonus points are allocated, assists can be added and removed. Whether we’re comfortable with that is another matter. The view is that it’s better to arrive at the correct decision later, than make a call in twenty-four hours or less and get it wrong. Again, it’s hard to argue against this. We all want a fair outcome – had Van Persie kept his assist in the FPL, it would have been the only Fantasy game to award it. That surely would not have been a fair outcome.

We want live updates on our scores, but perhaps if a decision is subject to review, at that point the associated points could be removed. Perhaps that would make the potential pill easier to swallow. Perhaps communication on decisions under review is also required.

Monday’s events have clearly raised a number of issues and, while, in my view, we have to put the specific case of Van Persie’s assist to bed, the classification of assists and the allocation of points under review, remain hot potatoes that will clearly spark further debate. Listen out for the next podcast is all I can say.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Going to place a bet on the top promoted team this season. Who do people think will finish higher out of:

    Swansea, QPR & Norwich

Swansea - Most impressive team so far imo. Love the keep ball they play, they actually try to play football against the top teams regardless of who they are or where they are. On the other hand they've been leaving a lot of gaps and without SuperVorm I think they'd be a lot lower. Unless he keeps up his incredible form I can see them slipping. Hopefully not to relegation, but it could happen.

      Estimated finish - 15th

QPR - Despite the influx of players they have continued to struggle and with Taarabt failing to perform at all it's been a very rough start for them. However, despite losing to City, they've played much better in the past 2 games and are showing a lot more promise. Surprisingly it seems to be down to Helguson whether he knows the ball has hit him or not!

      Estimated finish - 17th

Norwich - Haven't been afraid to attack teams nevermind who they are. They don't keep hold of the ball terribly well but they've had some outstanding plays from the likes of Pilkington, Holt and Morison. Unfortunately these moments of brilliance coincide with leaking goals, far too many goals. I think they'll continue to do leak goals as Ruddy although having flashes of brilliance himself is far too inconsistent.

      Estimated finish - 19th

In the order you have it IMO.
Swansea should survive with gritty displays away and some wins at home. QPR may do enough to get above Wolves, Wigan and Blackburn and may buy again in January. Norwich just don't have the quality or the defence to stay up.

Lengthy. I like it. And I do agree despite losing 8 points, they wern't really mine in the first place.

It does massively expose the silliness of the new BP system though - RVP was MOTM until Gervinho got an inconsequential touch on the ball? Shows why subjectivity is sometimes better than objectivity.

I think the assist rule could be refined a little. I like the fact that the attacker putting the ball into the box gets the assist, even if it touches a host of defenders, as he has made a telling contribution to the goal - but maybe not if the defenders manage to clear it out of the box again (in which case it becomes a different attacking phase, in my opinion). Maybe that's something for next season.

But whatever the rules are, you're always going to get some strange events resulting in assists that generally weren't the intention of the assistor - but that's happened for many years, so we should just accept it when it does.

    jamie o'hara.
    4-4-2 = bad
    4-5-1 = good
his points this season are the clearest proof of that you could ever ask for. given that fletcher is too good a goalscorer to leave out and mick mccarthy is happily married to kevin doyle then there is a massive threat that o'hara will be back in the deep midfield position as soon as next match. if so he is once again a 2 point man.
however he has done so will in the 4-5-1 i suppose there is always a chance mccarthy may try and eek it out as long as possible keeping flecther on the bench. given however that if he does fletcher will score more goals in 10mins off the bench at the end than kevin doyle will score in an average month i don't expect this to last too long. to conclude, as this started:
    jamie o'hara.
    4-4-2 = bad
    4-5-1 = good

This is the point I've been trying to make. O'Hara in a 4-4-2 is restricted to having most of his shots from outside the area and even his goal the previous week against Blackburn was just about the first time I could remember him getting inside the box the whole game.

Obviously it was a different story against a defence as relaxed as Wigan's.

I don't really get all the whining about this and that... I know some people have lots of money on the line, but the rules are the same for everyone and the misfortunes will surely even up over the season.

I had RvP, saw the goal live and was certain that he would lose his assist, the same way Song lost his and Ramsey got one added a few weeks back. There's no way of telling if Bale's shot was going in or not, after watching it a couple of times I think it was heading towards the backpost if anything. Doesn't really matter if there were players standing in the way of the ball or not since the shot was judged "goalbound".

One thing I do wonder about is the Nani "assist" because as I saw it on telly I thought it hit Welbeck and then the defender or both at the same time... so it should no way be Nanners assist.

agree. assist are removed or given every week, this week is clearly over inflated as the player in question was the most popular captain choice therefore more people were affected, and as captain choice affected in a bigger way. as the article rightly points out though the van persie points were never properly his in the first place so no one lost anything

it's not a tiresome item of contention. it's nothing to do with FPL that it's contentious, it's contentious because the assist itself was contentious.
again on this specific matter i think you yourself aren't even sure what you specifically have a problem with and you're just trying to pluck whatever you can out to justify your ranting yesterday

Disagree completely, if you check every single one of my posts it is readily evident that i was putting my point across in a clear, concise, fair and balanced matter. I do not need to justify anything - my opinion is just as valid as anyone elses on this website - unfortunately it seems to be the case that it is considered a rant as i have chosen a different viewpoint from yours and others on this website, which i actually consider extremely unfair as on many occasions last night i said that everyone was entitled to an opinion (which surely is what this forum was originally intended for) and that discussion can only be a good thing, instead of remaining silent and accepting something that many members did not agree with. It is clear as day what i have wanted from the start, however you have either chosen to ignore it or you are too blinded by your own viewpoint to be willing to acknowledge mine.

100% agree with the talking point. someow dividing intentional and non-intentional assists howeevr opens a can of worms that is really not worth going near. only the player in question knows exactly what he intended, whilst sometimes it may be obvious he completely lucked out, others will be much more debatable and there shouldn't be a risk of a player not being awarded an assist for something someone believes he didn't intend when in fact he did intend it.

Which candidate for a medium-priced mid if you have RVP?

    B. Sess (3)
    C. Drenthe (11)
    D. Walters (4)

The clarification of the rules concerning the revision of decisions is a definate step in the right direction. I also second Mark's quote: "but perhaps if a decision is subject to review, at that point the associated points could be removed. Perhaps that would make the potential pill easier to swallow. Perhaps communication on decisions under review is also required." I am glad that FPL towers listened to the FPL playing community and chose to take a positive step in handling this weekends controversy. Im also glad that the power of the people prevailed and their voice was heard, proving that you can make a difference if you try.

taking away reviewed assists is a decent idea, especially as then the outcome will either be no news or good news, as opposed to good or bad news.
only issue there is it's not always obvious immediately that an assist is debatable, therefore there could be 3 steps of give it, take it away while it's reviewed then give it back again, whereas the worst case scenario in the current system is 2 steps of give it lose it. less steps seems a bit more professional

As you said, not sure they know it's a reviewable assist until a much later time.

Take for instance Bale. His goal was given immediately by Metro(OPTA), then it was taken away, then it was given back.

One of the great things about the game is live scoring (remember the uproar when it didn't appear for the first gameweek), and it doesn't bother me really that points are assigned, reviewed and altered, just as long as it takes less than 48 hours. As Mark said, as long as they get it correct in the end.

BTW I've looked at the Nani assist a number of times and I can't see a Welbeck touch. OPTA have all sorts of gadgets and camera angles, it's unlikely that they get things incorrect.

Perhaps, i feel Marks quote that i reiterated in my original post is directly in line with what i was appealing for last night (or assist-gate - quite like that actually, props to the lad who coined it), i wanted a ratification of the points allocation and alteration process, at no point did i appeal for rvps points to be reinstated as i fully understood that was never a possibility. Hopefully today is a step in the right direction and the game we all love so much can return to its former greatness.

Did you receive a non-automated reply to your email? Over 2.6million people play this game, individually I'm sure that we have no voice or power to impact upon the game.

It takes the intervention of something like Fantasy Football Scout, which they rely on for their 'The Scout' feature as well as the injury and % chance of playing updates, to have a meaningful effect.

If by 'us' you mean the 10,000 / 20,000 / 50,000 people who visit this site (complete guess on the numbers), of course they still have a game without us.

I split my season in two parts.

First half I try to build value and I sometimes even take a hit if it's to get rid of a dropping player to get in a rising player. I rarely roll over transfers either because this way I can get in players that are rising every week and thus try to capitalize on as much of a players rise as possible.

Second half I try to use the value to my advantage, reduce the hits to a minimum and rise in the rankings.

Kind of wish I'd used my WC nice and early - stuck with a team value of 102.0. In my experience, when you use your wildcard later on you end up losing money (by selling players that have risen plenty.)

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that I've used the wildcard within the first 4 weeks the last two seasons. Last season I ended up in top200 playing with this tactic and I'm on a pretty solid run this season too. It's of course not only about the value, but a combination of that, midterm fixtures, form etc...

The free wildcard in GW2 made a big difference this year, though - completely removed the skill (and guesswork) of picking cheap, relatively unknown starters and meant you could see who the OOPers etc were and react accordingly.

Subsequently dis-owned Tony Scott''s film, said it was sh*t that was nothing like he intended.

              I liked it myself.

I wanted defensive cover for Man United over their next run but I just don't see anyone worth investing in. How about you guys?

I may finally admit defeat and concede I have been priced out of any of their defensive cover. 🙁

I'm thinking of getting Evans, play him every week and have a decent substitute if he doesn't play. He is only 4,5 and rarely comes on if he doesn't start.

Is it worth a 4point hit for any of:

    a) Walters
    b) Sessegnon
    c) Drenthe

I have petrov currently. If the answer is yes put down which option is best

    Alternatively no hit if:

    d) Pilkington

What should i do with my team-i know i need to take out bannan and mikel 3.1m in the bank-should i spend it all ?? (i know my team is crap)

    Given (Vorm)
Jose Enrique Bosingwa Taylor R (taylor simpson)
Mikel Yaya Toure Van der Vaart Silva (bannan)
    Adebayor Agbonlahor Van Persie

Drenthe and Ramsey/Walters would work. This team looks otherwise very decent. Like myself, you probably need to think about getting shot of Given too, the Villains just aren't nicking CS's.

Been really struggling this year with what looks like a solid team that just isn't coming good from week-to-week. Wild Card is long gone, any thoughts on a long-term strategy?

    Given Vorm
Bos Komps Enrique Evans (latest transfer in for Boyata) Tierney
    Mata VDV Ramsey Moses Dyer
    Rooney Ade Suarez

$0.7M in the bank. My main rivals have loaded up on Newcastle defenders and Silva, Ageuro so I have been avoiding them for weeks at my peril.

Getting fed-up with this game as people leading my league know nothing and just getting lucky, heh.

get rid of Ade and Suarez, get in RVP and AN Other. also thinking Bosignwa and Evans need to go for dead cert starters.

      Also your link needs updating

Suarez I agree, but I'd keep Ade, possible DGW in GW14 and has amazing fixtures. I'm actually looking at getting Adebayooor in the next few weeks.

Apart from the obvious lack of RvP, I think you have too much tied up in Def. I'd be looking to downgrade Bosy and Enrique. Cheap EVE Def could be good to rotate for home fixs (next 5 are good) and Swans/New look very solid at the back regardless of oppo, so I'd be looking at blending that into my Def over the next couple of GWs.

Matter to Silva wouldn't hurt either.

Hey ho, that's a 700 point hit for you then, eh? 🙂

You could downgrade Bosingwa and upgrade Suarez to Aguero or some other striker.

On the Van Peris situation, yeah i'm a little disappointed that he didnt get the assist and extra bap points but the positive for me is im still only one of 3 people in my mini league of about 20 with him in and his price is going mental, long may that continue so that others cant afford him!
