The Digest – Gameweek Twelve

Tottenham bring Gameweek 12 to a close, sparing Aston Villa a spanking but throwing Fantasy managers options from all angles. Elsewhere, a pre-season certainty returned to form in timely fashion, reviving an option that had previously seemed irresistible…

The Player

While Yakubu and Heidar Helguson pulled a brace apiece out of the hat to provide further budget considerations up front, it was Leighton Baines’ points haul that handed Fantasy managers maximum food for thought.

Going into the season, Baines looked nailed-on for our lineups. Five goals and 11 assists last season, following on from 9 in 2009/10, the Everton left-back was delivering the returns of a mid-price midfielder, with the opportunity to throw in the occasional clean sheet. With Mikel Arteta’s departure to the Emirates, Baines was also installed as the Goodison penalty taker – surely a factor that would seal the deal?

Yet Baines’ Fantasy stock gradually fell as the gameweeks passed. Everton’s inability to claim clean sheets, compounded by key injuries and a run of opponents that limited their attacking potential, meant that the former Wigan man’s potential man dried up. Having claimed strong initial ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, we witnessed heavy sales and a price drop from 8.0 to 7.8.

However, the theories thrown around at the start of the season should remain fresh in our minds. We explored matters further in last week’s Monitor article – all the statistical signposts pointed to a turn in fortunes – and so it proved.

Baines, at his best when Everton have some form, is effectively an immensely effective winger with set-piece command and the added potential of clean sheets. For 7.8 that seems a fair deal – when you consider Everton’s fixtures hand them opponents that give them a fair crack of building on Saturday’s win, suddenly his acquisition continues to make sense all over again. The problem now is finding the funds – it all seemed so easy back in August.

The Team

Back in gameweek 10, The Digest sang the praises of Harry Redknapp’s side, emphasising the wealth of attacking talent open to Fantasy managers. Just a couple of gamweeks on and, while Harry’s been under the surgeon’s knife, little has changed in terms of his team’s potential.

Last night’s 2-0 win over a Villa side, who seemingly turned up at White Hart Lane to frustrate and contain, should have been more emphatic. Tottenham’s midfield conjured opportunities, the pace of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon tormented Alex McLeish’s bewildered full-backs, while Emmanuel Adebayor found his scoring touch after a recent drought.

Defensively, Tottenham also look composed. Admittedly, Villa posed little threat but with Ledley King restored to the heart of the back-four, Redknapp’s side were more resolute and showed every indication that, as mid-price defensive assets go, they are worthy of consideration. Full-backs Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Kyle Walker stand out as the key options – two more considerations within a Tottenham squad that remains buoyant and brimming with Fantasy profit.

The Talking Point

Which brings us nicely to the talking point. Gareth Bale’s performance last night took him to 3 assists and 3 goals in his last three gameweeks. Seven bonus points have inevitably followed in a spell that has seen him suddenly emerge as a consistent Fantasy performer.

We spoke at length about his potential in last week’s Monitor article – our Members will have seen plenty of evidence in that article which pre-empted last night’s assist returns. The theory is that Bale is a different animal this season; his form and display last night only added further evidence to support that view.

The issue for Fantasy managers concerns the acquisition of Bale as an alternative to Rafael Van der Vaart. There can be no question that the Dutchman is a prime Fantasy asset – a playmaker who commands set-pieces and penalties, and a player who has scored 19 goals in the last year – a total bettered only by Robin Van Persie and Darren Bent.

Van der Vaart has drawn blanks in his last two outings, however, and, last night’s withdrawal on 68 minutes was the second consecutive game in which he’s been hauled off with over 20 minutes on the clock – the fourth time in six gameweeks.

With Jermain Defoe straining at the leash, this tactic of Redknapp’s seems set to continue, meaning that Van der Vaart will need to damage opponents and return Fantasy points in just over an hour per game. Bale, in comparison, is unquestionably a 90-minute man and looks immune to rest and rotation. With Cameroon failing to qualify for the African Cup of Nations, there’s also little chance that Bale will be forced to shift to left-back to cover for the loss of Assou-Ekotto, as he was on occasions last time round.

There’s a simple solution to the conundrum – draft in both Van der Vaart and Bale. This may jar at first but, had the Dutchman been classified as a forward, you could argue it would be a solution adopted without too much thought.

As it stands, Tottenham continue to have a run of favourable fixtures in front of them – a run that suggests that the wins and goals will go on flowing. Aside from David Silva and perhaps Frank Lampard, you can argue that there are currently few, if any midfielders, who offer the scoring potential of the Tottenham pair going into the New Year.

The Van der Vaart/Bale pairing is a Fantasy basket that appears to cradle all our eggs rather nicely.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I am thinking of doing Gabby to Bendtner and Milner to Bale for a hit, worth it?

Going to do Nani----> Bale right now.

Nani is dropping in price, Bale is rising and will rise more and Nani has played so much lately that I don't think he'll start at the weekend, and on top of that he's not in the form I want for 10m. Oh and Manchester United don't exactly fill me with confidence at this very moment.

Please reply very soon if you have any objections to this 🙂

Ouch. So tricky. If players are above 75% to a drop on either site I think they're rather likely to drop. Not sure obviously but would think he'd drop tonight.

What about Lampard's 4 yellow cards, that'd be a spanner if he was instantly banned?

I dunno Garg. You already have VDV and Ade, and I think 3 Spurs attackers is 1 too many. One off game and you will truggle to score well. Personally I would stick with Nani - he rarely disappoints over the season and he is due big time.

It's a massive overload for sure, Nani has been a real pain in the ass though and I don't want him to ruin my team value too. Will look to possibly buy him back when United look more like their usual selves

See your point, but I wouldn't jeapordise points over team value. Nani with his fixtures could easily smash it up. If you haven't already I would just do Bosingwa out and leave it at that.

I'd warn you about players getting injured in training and the risk of incurring necessary point hits when they do.

Although I've ignored my general approach and done an early Mignolet to Westwood partly for price reasons. That was because if either moved by 0.1 I couldn't afford it.

    Current Team:

    Vorm (Kenny)
    Richards Brown Wilkinson (Enrique, Simpson)
    VDV Silva Nani Ramsey (Dyer)
    RVP Adebayour Sturridge

Happy with this lot but at the back of my mind I'm wondering if I should do Nani > Larsson, reasoning being:
    1. Nani hasn't been playing that well lately
    2. I think there's a good chance he'll be benched this weekend
    3. Sunderland's next three fixtures
    4. Will leave me with enough to fund Sturridge > Aguero (or possibly Rooney) next week

Should I stay or should I go?

Prior to tonight's game I would have said yes, definitely. However he played well whenever he picked up the ball and ran at their defence. On tonight's showing I'd be surprised if he was benched.

Sorry, I realise is this no help.

this week man u lineup for defend would be Jones, Smalling, Vidic, Evra. Rio is not 1st choice to partner vidic anymore. I have jones and i'll keep him for GW13. Smaling is real big issue but i don't think he on full match fitness. Liverpool will play better against big team and playing like rubbish when vs small/new prometed teams. Seem like mystery to me. Don't rely on richard to do like GW12. I don't think he can delivered more than 5 point.

I agree with your starting lineup for this week. Smalling is really a CB and Jones is more suited for RB because he gets forward so much. Could Rafael play though? isn't he going to be back by then, perhaps he is more likely to come off the bench? Also Evans could be due a start at CB offering the chance to give Jones a rest and play Smalling for an hour at RB before Rafael replaces him?

Just thinking out loud here but the chances of Jones getting a rest could be quite high, he has played a lot of games lately. In saying that though he will probably only miss 1 game and United have much better fixtures coming up. It's still a 50/50 call between Jones and Richards me thinks

    First post on here.

Quite happy with my team and im to the point where im looking at trading for trading sake

    Team for this week

    Vorm (Given)
Wes Brown, Baines, Evans (R.Taylor, Simpson)
    Silva, VDV, Larsson, Walters (Dyer)
    Adebayor, Van Persie, Suarez

Probably only looking at improving my defensive half. Looking at the options in the middle and forward there are no real other players that i want (maybe Bale but dont have the funds for that, and would only swap out Dyer).

Prob swap Evans for someone else around that 4.5 mill mark as only have .2 in the bank (Kompany to Baines is my free trade this week)

Well since you have used your Free transfer there is nothing else you need to do really, it seems settled for this week. No need for a hit this week so wait and see how next weekend goes before making assumptions on future trades. For now though I would question having two newcastle defenders and Given as well as Evans. Also the form of Suarez must also be of some concern. No urgent transfers needed this week though

Suarez is the one thats closest to getting the boot, but i watch the odd Liverpool game and he just seems to get so many shots at goal that are either hitting the bar or miraculous saves. Can just see the tide turning and him converting a few of those chances.

Will be looking to move Evans on next week.

Not overly concerned about the 2 Newcastle defenders. R.Taylor offers a lot going forward, and after these next few gameweeks, the Newcastle fixtures open up again.

Gargs - any thoughts on what I should do this week? 2 freebies and 1.0m in the bank:

Dunne -> Richards or P Jones (benching Woodgate) and save the 2nd transfer is all I can come up with...and I am tearing my hair out deciding which of the 2 to go for!

    Westwood (Ruddy)
    Brown, Wilkinson, Woodgate, (Dunne), (Simpson)
    Silva, VDV, Ramsey, Sinclair, (Moses)

As wilkinson is a roation risk with higinbotham back, woodgate is also prone to rotation i think enrique is worth considering for the season, Or Jagielka for the season
Mkae the 1 transfer and roll over the second one

Mate, don't. I stupidly thought Dunne would be a good defensive pick with Villa's fixtures and his history of scoring the odd header from set pieces! Been wanting him out for weeks but always had more pressing transfers.

Woody -> Jags (see below) is my likely move next week. Think I'm set on just Dunne -> Jones/Richards/Smalling this week. Which would you plump for?

Of course Jinswick, now let's see. That is one stunning team you have there. Wow.

I like the transfer idea you have there, would pick Jones over Richards I think. Richards superb but fixtures are dodgy for a while more.

Thanks! Moses aside I'm fairly happy with my front 8 - he can stay as bench fodder until the Jan wildcard I think. Defence does require some surgery though - would you be concerned at Jones being rested this w/e? If I knew he would start that would make the Richards/Jones debate so much easier.

Next week I'm thinking about Woody/Moses -> Jags/Ferguson (and accepting that I'll only have 2 players on the bench till the Jan wildcard). I've never had to use all 3 subs this season and it's the only way to get some EVE coverage in for their good run. Good/bad idea? Alternative is Dunne -> Smalling this week and Woody -> Jags next week...

I have no inside information about Phil Jones but I think he's a good player that SAF rates and is quite likely to play this and most other games.

In my opinion you should think at least twice before getting Ferguson, you never know what can happen, with wintertime and all. Games might be called off etc and the 3 subs might be handy. Then again as you say, the january wildcard isn't far away.

I don't think you desperately need to get Everton defenders in, but if you like them I think the first option is better, especially as Ferguson is only marginally worse than Moses anyway 🙂

Haha, very true. You've got me swaying back to Jones now...

As for next week, 2 transfers just to get Jags in seems a bit OTT, especially when it only leaves me with 2 subs. Maybe i'll just do Woody -> Ward for WOL's good fixtures in GW14,16 &17 (rotates well with Wilko/Brown), and his attacking threat, and then save the transfer again, perhaps for an Aguero -> Rooney (if he's showing some form) move in GW15! Better idea?

              Hmm.

I'm never particularly confident in Wolves defenders. Think I'd rather get Naylor or Rangel from Swansea, but that might just be personal taste. Think the rough strategy you've come up with is pretty good.

You should be set for a long spell of green arrows with that team+plan I'd think. Not that you can ever be sure in this game...

Yeah I would prefer either of those 2, only problem is they rotate horribly with Wilko/Brown, who both have awful fixtures in GWs 14,16 & 17, so ideally I'd like a defender who I can play with Jones & Simpson for those 3 weeks.

That only really leaves EVE, WOL and NEWC defenders. From those 3, I can only afford WOL defenders (unless I do the Moses -> Ferguson move with my 2nd freebie). Only Ward appeals from WOL, who with SUN, STO & NOR in those 3 GWs could have a chance of clean sheets/attacking returns?

I've lucked with my team... and by luck I mean transferred like no tomorrow (32), ranked 230k, and got a pleasant team value of 104.3 with 2.4 in the bank. My team is currently

    Lindegaard (Vorm)
ShawX - Brown - Wilkinson (Jose - RTaylor)
Ramsey - Walters - Sessegnon - VDV (Silva)
    Aguero - Sturridge - VP

Looking to transfer sturridge out. I have 8.9 to spend, thinking of MaxiRod depending on performance against MCI, but not sure... what do you think?

Keep Sturridge at least for this week

Lindegaard?! Now, there's a problem.. (Although you can easily play Vorm for the 3 next weeks)

Bosingwa also needs to go, if you do him out for a cheapie you can afford Hernandez up front if you want to throw out Sturridge next week. If not, then Jones/Richards/Enrique are good options.

      Rest looks good

Yeah... looking at the fixtures, you are probably right... aguero and sturridge out for hernandez and ade! Lindegaard I'll keep for the next three weeks just in case fergie plays him, if not, vorm is subbed in.

Silver will play in the big league games coming up and against Bayern, they are all crucial games for City and they will need their best player in each of those games. At some point you will need to buy Silver back in for his inflated price. Its not worth selling him

Thing is, if he manages to score big then you will be left behind with his high overall ownership. Im thinking of replacing him to but there's no way id be able to afford him back so might as well be boring and stick with him.

I will be able to afford him surely. I've done in the last years plenty of time. Well City aren't untouchable,. they must drop some points at some time and they can't score forever. Even Real M went 2 games in a row with 0:0. Value isn't the ultimate deal u know. I will need 0.5 to bring him again but I bet that on the players I bring will already earn around 0.2/3 So it's not that I am loosing that much. A lot of mids in City and Mancini loves to rotate. Only 3 strikers and plenty of mids. Starting to think that aguero is better price. I have 3 City players which is not logic having in mind the fixtures.

Also if RVP is rested in the w/e what is certainly a posibilitty, then Lamps would be marvelous differential captain. Looks like everybody owns, RVP, Silva DVD, something must be done.

Im not saying that value is the ultimate deal and you shouldnt sell him at any costs if you are making a loss.

If you read my comment I said that Im also considering shipping him out with City's rotation and UCL games. Just that if he hauls against the likes of Norwich then we'll get burned due to his high overall ownership.

Well Nor aren't push over u know? The hauls were against the bigger teams, when the game was over and there was lack of motivation. Nor will play whole game. And how many times Silva exploded>? He is consistent performer u know. Also very very important he is not that popular captaincy option so he won't do that much damage. That GW Ars and Tot have great fixtures too, so plenty of captaincy options. Silva going "wild " against Nor doesn't scares me

Can we do a quick vote here? I'm going to sell Bosingwa this week and can afford every defender in the game. Already have Kompany, Evans, S Taylor and Wilkinson. If needed I'd happily spend all my money (7.8) but it's obviously nicer too to get a cheaper defender.

So: Which defender would YOU get right now if money was no big object? Cast your votes here ladies and gentlemen

lol Turner if you're after a cheapie and need a defender to play for the next 2 or 3 GWs. There are obviously better options out there, just depends what you plan do to with the extra cash if you do get a cheapie for Bosingwa.

Personally i'm toying with Kompany > Turner and then using the cash to do Sturridge > Aguero in GW14 (i have some in the bank as well)

    Im keeping Suarez.........So there 🙂

Thought long and hard about removing him , but have decided to use my free transfer to remove ward from the defence (bad fixtures)

I kept Sessgron all season and was rewarded.
I kept Adebyour for weeks when he didnt score nd was rewarded.

Now i shall keep Suarez , although i dont expect much this week , his fixtures improve shortly , and Liverpool looking good.

Was going to remove him for Sturridge or Hernandez , but both those teams coming off champions league games , and they both rotation risks , so thought what the heck , keep him

Haha, I'm looking at bringing Ward in next week! Agree on keeping Suarez though - the lad is class and will come good.

Well i already have Ade and RVP and consider Hernandez over priced at 10m , especially now Berbatov is coming back into the mix . Sure Henandez will start this week , but wont be the case every week

Some good points being made about Silva, which really force one to debate wether to keep or not. Initially I wouldve never even thought about selling, but if hes going to be rotated more with important European games and City have got harder games, could be a good idea to get rid. )Also if hes drawing blanks consistenly) 0.5 Isnt that big a deal, and could be made back with other rising mids. With that said i might keep hold of him but could be a good idea to do Silva > Lampard after his suspension

Well I agree with you, The only problem that I am seeing atm that I have the cash. I am not sure for what to raise the cash? Lamps? Rooney? Baines? I need to be convinced from some of this players first than we could/ should talk. But I am not in the front definitely not selling him for any cause. Also I believe in Liv defense, only we need to hope that Carra won't be back, Then they don't have Tevez anymore, who always scores against Che, so I definitely seeing them dropping points in that game. Liv, Che and rotated/rested for Nor that's 3 games. Well I can make plenty of points in those GW's

    My team ahead of GW13:

    de Gea

    W.Brown Kaboul J.Evans J.Enrique

Walcott van der Vaart(V) Gamst Pedersen

    Suarez Rooney(C) Agüero

    ...

    Opinions?

      I don't like the majority;
      de Gea is overpriced
BAE/Walker are better options than Kaboul
Evans is not even first choice, especially with all these returns from injuries
MGP - much better options at that price
Suarez is too frustrating and seemingly can't even get a shot on target, hasn't scored more than 1 goal for in a Pool ever and hasn't got double fixtures FPL wise either
Rooney (c) isn't the best shout, Newcastle are a tough oppo and United have only scored more than 1 goal in their past 7 games - with Rooney scoring 0.
and finally, no RVP is FPL suicide, don't know if you have a man crush on Rooney or a hatred for RVP but you need to get him in there.

de Gea - brought him in recently (along with J.Evans - for the game when they were both benched!).

I don't rate Walker. Assou-Ekotto would be before him, but I prefer the tenacity of Kaboul who is an attacking threat from corners and tends score now and then.

van Persie - practically everyone in my main league has him, so I avoided him and yes, I have paid (though I did all the shouting earlier on in the season when Rooney and Kun were banging in their hat-tricks...).

Oh, and yes - Rooney... I love him!

This is exactly my dilemma this week. Richards or Jones? Think I'm going with Jones due to fixtures, so I would say no to that transfer.

Your squad is very good, so I'd either save the transfer or do Woodgate -> Brown this week.

        +1

United have significantly better fixtures than City, and you'd have to say that there's no obvious attacking advantage to Richards over Jones (despite recent GWs) based on where they play around the pitch.

yeah you're right. i got him in because of fixtures so I might as well ride it out for at least a couple weeks. I just saw richards score last week and it maybe me wonder if i'll be missing out on good attacking points if i dont buy. so i think i'll keep jones at least for a week or two longer and then see

thanks mate! was thinking that one and also contemplating getting rid of ramsey perhaps or just saving the FT. how do you rate ramsey?

    Vorm, Hennessey

    Kompany, Saylor, Jenny, McAuley, Naylor
Silva, Drenthe, Sinclair, VdV, B Johnson
    Rooney, RVP, Bendtner

Thinking of getting rid of Kompany for either Richards, Vermaelen or Jones.

Plumping for Verms as Ars have nice fixtures and Verms prob has a goal or two in him. Like Jones but poss resting this weekend? Everyone else in my mini league has Richards.

    Wos reckon lads?

Also, do I ditch Rooney for Aguero as well for a hit or leave him in and do it next week?

Never - NEVER - sell Rooney (barring a long-term injury, ofc). I'm looking to sell Agüero after the Norwich game - I may opt for Balotelli and bolster elsewhere, but I haven't decided yet.

The transfer for Kompany to Richards, Verm, Jones has their own ups and downs. Whichever you decide to choose will still be good imo.

Rooney/Aguero Id definitely play the fixtures and keep him this week and get Aguero against Norwich.

Komp not getting cleanies though, tough fixtures ahead and isn't a goal or assist threat.

Roonpig to Hernandez is too sideways for me. Liking Aguero for GW14 v Norwich.

Yes but I'd have so much money in bank I'd have to do about 2 other changes too to make it worthwhile!

Would rather do Bendtner to Helgs but Bendy has good fixtures.

I think I'd keep Rooney until nearer Christmas and if he still hasn't shaped himself then him and Bendtner > Ade and Suarez could be a profitable switch. Apart from the two games against City Liverpool have really good fixtures.Caveats applicable, of course.

i'd say probably kompany to jones cuz of fixtures. or richards for more attacking if you dont want jones for some reason. and rooney to aguero next week for sure. maybe save them both because I've heard rumors of possible rotation for jones this week. although they are only rumors and i'm hoping they arent true, its probalby safer. plus it leaves you two FT's next week in case something comes up
