Key Battle

Key Battles- Gameweek Fifteen

Our Friday regular looks at Juan Mata’s prospects at the Bridge on Monday evening as Man City make their way to Chelsea. Theo Walcott and Leighton Baines’ match-up looks a tantalising clash at the Emirate, while a red-hot Gareth Bale will fancy his chances at the Britannia on Sunday afternoon.

Juan Mata vs Micah Richards/ Pablo Zabaleta
The Spaniard’s 3 goals and 7 assists in just twelve appearances highlight his importance to Chelsea going forward. The creative hub of the Blues attacks, Mata is the man most likely to make things happen as Andre Villas-Boas aims to send City to their first league defeat of season. With the visitors conceding in each of their last seven, Mata will have plenty chances to infiltrate their back-four with his pinpoint passing and provide for the likes of Didier Drogba and Daniel Sturridge in Monday night’s live showdown.

Richards’ rampaging runs from deep have been an integral part of City’s attacking ploys this season. So far, he’s picked up 6 assists, with his ability to bomb forward and join in attacks proving dividend. Fabio Capello has turned his back on Richards, with his defensive merits a concern and it’s noticeable that Roberto Mancini has also played him just once in Europe- a 2-0 defeat at Bayern Munich. Richards was, admittedly, a doubt for the Bayern return on Wednesday with a slight calf strain but and Roberto Mancini has revealed today there may be a question mark against him for the Stamford Bridge clash. If he’s absent, Pablo Zabaleta should come in as a replacement, though the Argentine is not fancied by Mancini on the domestic stage, having failed to pick up any minutes since the win at Blackburn in gameweek seven. Whether either of the pair has the ability to nullify Mata’s threat is another thing entirely.

Theo Walcott vs Leighton Baines
The Gunners winger has stepped up in his consistency of late, without providing spectacular Fantasy returns. As the Arsenal new boys click into place and another new Arsene Wenger team evolves, Walcott has come to the fore in their recent unbeaten run, with his understanding with Robin Van Persie particularly catching the eye. Having scored or assisted in each of his last five league games, Walcott’s got the form and, having been rested for the Champions League trip to Olympiacos, will be fully fit and ready to torment Everton at the Emirates this Saturday.

While the Toffees wide men flatter to deceive and David Moyes bemoans a lack of creativity, Baines has been his usual consistent self. Despite a single assist all season, the left-back has set up more goalscoring opportunities per game that last term, with poor finishing from the Everton front men letting him down. His delivery from the flank is arguably more crucial than ever for Moyes’ side but Baines has a quandary, though- the further forward he forages, the more space he leaves for Walcott to utilise behind him.

Gareth Bale vs Andy Wilkinson
Bale has been untouchable over the last five gameweeks as a Fantasy asset, returning double figures on four of those occasions for a total of 56 points. While Emmanuel Adebayor and Rafael Van der Vaart have hogged the headlines on occasion, the Welshman has produced the goods on a more regular basis than either of the pair in recent times- a sure sign of his maturity and flourishing form within Harry Redknapp’s side as the season unfolds. Stoke’s physical game may pose problems for Spurs at the Britannia but Bale’s speed and ability against the more agricultural Potters back line may prove their undoing. Harry Redknapp revealed today he is a slight doubt due to a knock, but with the game not until Sunday, Bale will be optimistic of recovering in time.

Wilkinson was benched last week, though he did come on as a second half sub for Jonathan Woodgate in the win at Everton. This time round, though, he is likely to be handed the unwanted task of attempting to shackle Bale at the Britannia and can expect a torrid time. The 1-0 Goodison win was only the second clean sheet in ten matches for the Potters and faced with one of the most potent and in-form attacks in the Premier League, another one on Sunday perhaps seems unlikely. His only hope is Redknapp’s recent tendency to switch Bale and Aaron Lennon on the flanks, with Marc Wilson bracing himself for a head to head with the Welshman if he changes over to the right.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

afternoon lads, hope everyone is good - what 2 players do i leave out?

    r.taylor, brown, jones, enrique (wilko)
    walters, vdv, nani, silva, b.johnson
    sturridge, ade, rvp

    cheers in advance

(currently have b.johnson and r.taylor as my first 2 subs in that order, but with brown against a free scoring blackburn and b.johnson against an injury ravaged newcastle i'm worried that there is going to be points left on my bench - again! lol)

yep, i really can't see brown keeping a cleanie against the best scoring team (outside of the 5) when sunderland have just conceded twice against wigan + wolves, but i think its certain newcastle will concede at least once against norwich - and probably alot more if their defence is taylor, simpson, perch, santon - thats horrific!

Hi guys, im going to bring in Vermalen for Hutton this week, but to do so i need to take out a more expensive midfielder/attacker. My options are:
    A) Silva
    B) Bale
    C) Adebayor
    D)Aguero

Im currently leaning towards Aguero. What do you guys think??
    Thanks

    Afternoon all, GW15 team is…

    Vorm
    Enrique Brown Raylor Walker
    VDV Silva Arteta
    RVP Ba Adebayor
    Subs: Krul, Dyer, Ward, Drenthe

    1 FT, £ 3.2m in bank.

Stick or do Ward>Jones/Evans and bench Brown?

Looking at all Uniteds injuries, wouldn't it be something if Berba found some form again? I know he's not very popular because he doesn't offer much defensively, but I always thought Fergie undervalued him. It takes some doing to win the golden boot despite your manager's hellbent desire to keep you on the bench every game, I hope berba finds some success over the holiday fixtures.

ade to sturridge is cool if you already have vdv and bale - not too sure about getting rid of aguero, he'll play against a bad chelsea defence this week (featuring the calamity that is bosingwa), and then an injury ravaged arsenal defence next week - if i had aguero i wouldn't be getting rid

    Silva, VDV, Ramsey, Sinclair, Moses
    RVP, Adebayor, Bendtner

Obviously a few changes needed and must get rid of Given, Rangel, Moses and a couple others, but out of those 3 positions and with just 0.7 in the bank there are a lot of players i could bring in, but which players are most important for now?

Well as it stands you can have a decent starting XI this week anyway.

      Personally, if I had your team I would;

      • Keep Ramsey due to great upcoming fixtures.
      • Get rid of Bendtner -> Ba or Sturridge next game week, even if he does well this week.
      • Look at obtaining Schwarzer and Krul as keepers (they rotate very well for another 13 weeks)
      • Forget about Ward. I feel that ShawX and Dyer will be more consistent in the long run. Evans is also an option, Utd have great fixtures.

    Question re: Europa League.

If Spurs and Rubin ended the last group match with even points, who will be qualified? Both won the game 1-0 at their own home.

If Spurs still can get qualified, I'd believe Defoe will be saved for Europa match on mid-week and so VDV to start on Sunday.

Also wanna swap Suarez -> Ba but should I wait til after this gameweek or not?

Ade's points per game, good fixtures, decent form, double gameweek and the fact he is centre forward at one of the 2 most attacking sides in the league would say keep him at all costs.

      let me end this debate:

      City clean sheet: 22% chance
      Newcastle clean sheet: 24% chance

      Kompany greater Goal threat...

Which of these 4 to start fellas?

    1. Gower - home to Fulham
    2. Drenthe - away at Arsenal but coming off injury?
    3. Jagielka - probably no CS but goal threat?
    4. Tierney - home to Newcastle.. again probably no CS but has brought 2 assists in the last 3 weeks

Gower or Tierney, at least they have a decent chance of an assist or something.

Right guys i'm still stuck on who to give the armband to (Possible (C) in bold) and who my 3rd defender should be.
    I've got......

    Vorm
    P.Jones | Walker | Simpson/N.Taylor
    Silva | VDV | Mata | Drenthe
RVP | Rooney | The Yak

    Subs:Ruddy | Simpson/N.Taylor | Wilkinson | Fergie

As a United fan I don't like the look of us losing Vidic but FPL wise thats great as Jones is more nailed on.

rooney if you're looking to gamble, wolves have been leaking goals and rvp could well decide he is not a god and only score once

Hi everyone, been lurking on here for a long time, my first post...
Was leading my league for a while but have slipped away recently, team is causing me a headache this week, any help would be much appreciated. 0.1 in the bank, Drenthe is the obvious one, maybe a downgrade to Dyer then use the spare money to upgrade Bendtner next week, or some United coverage?

    Vorm (Westwood)
    Kompany, Brown, BAE, Enrique, (Simpson)
    Silva, Bale, Adam, Ramsey (Drenthe)
    Adebayor, RVP(c) (Bendtner)

Want to ditch Adam after the next few games, maybe a Spurs player for the double game week.

I think O'Neil will ace an instant positive effect on Sunderland but with Swanseas home form I'd still spread the risk.

i friggin hope so - i've got brown and hes down sod all since i brought him in - 2 goals conceded against wigan and wolves doesn't breed confidence - hopefully MON has given them all a right kick up the ass

never double up unless you're certain - i've only done it once (tripled up really - 3x newc against wigan)

Wenger says Santos injury more severe than expected, longer than 3 week lay off. Vermaelen will start at left-back.
