Rooney Out of Ajax Game

Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of Manchester United’s Europa League game with Ajax tomorrow evening. Sir Alex Ferguson’s afternoon press conference revealed the striker has been struggling with a throat infection for a week and, with a 2-0 first leg advantage, will not be risked against the Dutch side.

Rumours were rife this morning of a possible absence- reports had indicated Rooney had missed training and have subsequently proven to be correct. United have since published details on their official site, with Ferguson going on to say:

Rooney’s out for tomorrow. He has a bad throat. There were traces of it in Amsterdam last Thursday and he’s been in bed for a lot of the weekend. He came in this morning for the first time. We’re trying hard to get him ready for Sunday [at Norwich].

With Dimitar Berbatov back in contention after recovering from a knock, the blow is slightly lessened for United but the news is a significant worry for Fantasy managers. Over 46,000 have transferred Rooney in this week prior to the champions’ trip to Norwich- only Demba Ba has been more popular.

Back-to-back braces against Chelsea and Liverpool have seen Rooney’s stock soar, with his price rising 0.2 over the last couple of gameweeks. With United’s schedule looking particularly enticing from gameweek 28 onwards, many have overlooked the likes of Sergio Aguero, despite home fixtures with Blackburn and Bolton up next for City.

While Ferguson hasn’t ruled him out for the visit to Carrow Road, Rooney’s owners will be anxiously awaiting the United manager’s regular Friday morning update, where more light will hopefully be shed on his chances of recovery. Any absence could mean a simple short-term switch to Aguero and, with Ba also afforded two home games – against Wolves and Sunderland- the alternatives are clearly enticing.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Dude here's a sneaky nice pick for you this week:

Marc-Antoine Fortune (5.2), he's a safer pick this week than Shane Long (5.7); and my prediction is that WBA will spank Sunderland's ass this weekend. Roy is loving him some Fortune right now, and I believe he will drag out Longs recovery.

Wait out on Rooney.. Its just sore throat. Curable by Sat. Also "Val might not be out for 4 weeks" is what the general consensus at FFS. so SAF will have no option but play him next week or face our wrath..

Rooney is going nowhere, he's my captain for this weekend. With the 2 goal lead going into tonight's match, he could probably afford to be rested anyway sore throat or not. He should be sorted by Sat. Was thinking the same about Val, SAF was very quick to say he'd be out for 4 weeks...could be mind games!

Easy dude, I'm not wishing a broken leg or death upon them.

Just a minor toe problem that maybe keeps them out for a week or two perhaps, or a tweaked hammy.

In fact, a hilarious 3 way collision between the players in question resulting in multiple concussions would go down a treat.

I used my 2 frees as soon as last gw's games finished. Couldn't wait as i knew the 0.2 i lost out on would be a problem for my proposed transfers in the future. Never really been burned by an early transfer, and on most occasions it's a calculated risk. For example i have a defender and midfielder on the bench currently who i'd have been happy to play anyway incase of an injury. Happy i did it early and will do again in the future

I'd stress though that the majority of times that i do it early is when i want to beat the price rise on a popular player. Of course if he's not rising or there's a game in midweek, then i'd more often than not leave it as late as possible

I made one transfer to beat a price rise early on as well (I suspect the same player as you) but kept one back just in case. Glad I did, but its a mixed blessing as their are no real standouts to replace my newly injured crew.

Sometimes it is worth the risk, but for anyone with Valencia, Rooney, BAE and at least one liverpool/everton player this week will be all about squeaky bums.

Agree, depends on the squad mostly, and most transfers are replacing an injured player, so you'd have to be fairly unlucky if you buy a player that gets injured too.

Also my transfers were done with GW 29 in mind too, so tried to cover all bases.

That’s not so bad Demi. To be honest, I probably could have done that too as I was happy to play either of my first two subs this week so I probably just missed out on another .2 rise on Demba, but I’m not strapped for cash so thought it wise to wait.

If I had a dodgy bench I think its always wise to wait – But I know how hard it is especially with a two week break!

Ah, Monday 8pm. Plenty of time for people to get smashed before the game.

I thought the police scheduled these type of games for early KOs because it is "high risk"?

Thanks people of the internet, much preesh

Now, do I get all nutters and strap the band on Shaqiri or Kroos?

Also, say for some insane reason, N'Koulou gets a wicked sore throat before kickoff, would auto subs bring someone in, or does making this move override it? Mostly just curious as to how the system works.

      Thanks Again UCLers

Autosubs only kick in if you haven't done manual subs. Or at least I'm pretty sure that's how it works. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Any thoughts on this team for the week:

    Krul
    Simpson / Evans / Richards
    McClean / Dempsey / Bale / Silva
    RVP / Aguero (C) / Ba

Subs: Mignolet / BAE / Valencia / Senderos
    0 FT / 0.7m bank

Thinking of getting Roo in for gw 28, but trying to work out whether to shift Valencia next week for Sess. Got rid of Sess for this week to replace him with McClean and upgrade Dzeko to Aguero, perhaps I should have waited! Any thoughts would be welcome!

nice team keep steady. Folks around agree on keepin Tony, so keep it. Donot bring in and out Sess every week. make a transfer and stick with it. It is either McDirty or Sess. Keep the FT. Or bring Kompany instead of Richy.

i'm going to try really really hard to try and solve AVB's team last last:
ashley cole is just back from injury, the bare minimum you need against a stampeding napoli front 3 is 100% fit defenders, cole wasn't. add to that a tonne of rain too making the pitch heavier, you risk losing cole for over a month. in essence though last night bosingwa can run faster in a straight line than cole.
with cole not fit enough to start you then have the issue going forward of losing cole's width to a right footed bosingwa. you can either pin mata to the wing, or just start the naturally left sided malouda over lampard, freeing mata to drift just like his goal for example.
play mata over meireles or ramires? AVB wanted legs, simple as that.

you can either have that, or the media version of rows here there and everywhere. rar rar rar fight fight fight stories stories stories sales sales sales

In fairness AB, the whole AVB/Chelsea saga is all rather dull and is only a talking point based on the club's (and its' fans) mis-placed sense of entitlement. This season's Swansea, Newcastle, Norwich outperformance is far more interesting to me than in-fighting at the Arse or Bridge.

The only bit that suprised me was the choice of Miereles and Ramires to play the holding mids. Lamps/Romeo/Essien would seem more sensible choices. Admittedly all with their own flaws.

        This

But Lamps...you're tripping. He can't officially play any position on the field any better than an average at best player. Meireles and Ramires with explicit orders would have been better IMHO.

Also AB, read Zonal Markings write-up. The choice to have Ivanovic as an "extremely attacking role" pushing Sturridge inside pretty much left a huge gap between Ivanovic and Cahill, that was exploited time and time again.

Could be some very interesting squad rotations for the weekend now. Why couldn't Mancini invent some exotic illness for Aguero?
