Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – Young Guns

Our Watchlist rankings have had their regular weekly refresh and can be found in their usual location – in the lower right sidebar. Once again, we’re seeing City’s assets slip with form, fixtures and injuries working against them. Budget defenders continue to offer exceptional value, and while there looks to be just a single slot up for grabs in our attacks, the midfields are seeing plenty of movement, with strong mid-price and budget options pushing for selection.

Goalkeepers

Adam Bogdan remains at the top of the goalkeeper rankings – partly due to the wealth of defensive alternatives available to cover returns from other teams. The likes of Steven Caulker, Stephen Kelly, Andy Wilkinson, Gareth McAuley and Benoit Assou-Ekotto all offer cheaper or more favourable routes to their respective defences.

Bogdan’s clean sheet potential may be limited but, at 4.0 in the FPL and with exceptionally strong fixtures, the Hungarian offers the cheapest option in Bolton’s defence, allowing us to cover other teams with the aforementioned defenders – all of whom look more favorable than their respective goalkeepers. It should also be noted that Bogdan has returned nine points from saves in his last nine games, including four points in the last three matches – for a miserly 4.0, that’s not a bad solution. He also works well in tandem with both of the top owned keepers – Michel Vorm and Tim Krul, over their run of tough fixtures in the next month.

David De Gea is your heavyweight option with exceptional form and fixtures in his favour. Anders Lindegaard’s imminent return to fitness is a mild concern but, right now, you can be confident in De Gea’s starts for another three to four Gameweeks, with strong clean sheet potential available.

In the mid-price bracket, Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer and Tottenham’s Brad Friedel both offer assured quality acquisitions with decent fixtures ahead. Again though, Kelly for Fulham and Assou-Ekotto for Spurs look stronger routes to the defensive returns on offer. Likewise, while West Brom’s Ben Foster looks to have potential, his appeal is reduced by the availability of Gareth McAuley as an outstanding budget prospect.

In terms of goalkeeping rotation, we like Bogdan with Schwarzer until Gameweek 34, with Sunderland’s Simon Mignolet then replacing Bogdan and rotating nicely with the Fulham stopper until the penultimate Gameweek. The final day lottery is the issue there, with Schwarzer facing Spurs away and Mignolet up against United. Friedel and Mignolet is another pairing worth investigating – they swap home and away up until Gameweek 35 but have favourable fixtures between them right until the season end.

Defenders

Jonny Evans continues to look an essential bargain purchase who just can’t be ignored for United’s run-in. He’s being chased by Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel, who for us just has the edge on Jose Enrique with greater goal threat. The Glen Johnson/Martin Kelly situation is worth monitoring here though – should Johnson’s injury see him sidelined for a number of weeks, Kelly’s potential, at 5.2 in the FPL, could rival Skrtel on our Watchlists.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto is back on the radar ahead of a run of favourable opponents which should see him supplement assist potential with a clean sheet or two. Steven Caulker, Stephen Kelly and Gareth McAuley then rank next – all offering outstanding value coverage for the Swansea, Fulham and West Brom defences.

City’s defence has seen a decline over the past week or so, hindered by injuries to both Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott. That leaves Micah Richards as the most likely name right now – even he could be under threat once again once Pablo Zabaleta returns to fitness. Suddenly, from being prime stock, the City defence is now in flux with a rough run of fixtures and insecurity playing their part. There looks to be better value elsewhere.

Midfielders

Gareth Bale holds the top spot – but only on the promise of delivering returns over a favourable run of opponents. He’s now under severe threat from both United’s Ashley Young and Arsenal’s Theo Walcott.

Both have very strong form going forward, with the fixtues to translate that into returns. The pair also play second fiddle to heavy-hitting strikers and are therefore “double-up” options respectively. Few Fantasy managers will be concerned by that – both Arsenal and United look good for goals and we could see many squads adopt the duo in the coming weeks. While Young has the edge with a better short-term fixture, Walcott offers greater security and is also cheaper at 8.9. Long-term, then, the Arsenal man could be set for a jump above Young, particularly once the tricky trip to Everton is out of the way.

Clint Dempsey is clinging to a top five ranking – based mainly on favourable home fixtures. He’ll likely need to deliver against Swansea to stave off FPL sales, although with Norwich and Bolton also in the frame in the next four Gameweeks, patience appears to be the best policy.

West Brom’s James Morrison and Bolton’s Ryo Miyaichi – both with fixtures and form in their favour, are your budget option differentials available to shake things up. Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa is also an intriguing option. He could be set for a run of starts following his goal at the Emirates – particularly if Ryan Taylor’s calf injury keeps him out for a number of weeks.

Forwards

Both Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney look rock solid at the top of the rankings – positions that they could well hold from now until the end of the season. Their form and fixtures could potentially mean that most Fantasy managers are looking to fill just one slot in their forward line – with budget likely to be the deciding factor.

Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor looks to have fixtures on his side and could be the on the cusp of another spurt of profit. West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie is our favoured option further down the price brackets, with City’s Mario Balotelli, stepping over team-mate Sergio Aguero to offer a cheaper route into City’s attacking potential.

Down in the budget market, Norwich City’s Grant Holt and the Blackburn pairing of Yakubu and Junior Hoilett remain decent options. Although with a tag of 6.4, Fulham’s Pavel Pogrebnyak looks to offer the stronger value and will likely be the option of choice, with tempting Craven Cottage fixtures ahead.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Had a decision to make
    RVP Rooney Suarez/Ba
Chose to keep Ba ome to Norwich instead of Suarez away at QPR.

Have or had a decision to make? If you've already made it please tell.

If not ... I'd keep Ba for the home game to Norwich.

I'm even going to be as bold as to throw him the armband this week, have a funny feeling he'll find his scoring feet again!

Have a funny feeling I'll be here on Monday having a massive grizzle about dropping 3 million places coz everyone captained Wayne "Hat-trick" Rooney.

Suarez scored in 1-0 win at Liverpool and Ba scored in 4-2 loss at Norwich.
My thinking was Newcastle form at home is good and Liverpool's away form is bad.

I've sat here for an hour now fiddling and I cannot come up with a plan. Maybe its the Lagavullin, maybe it's the late hour.

What what would you do with this rabble?

    Krul / Vorm
    Cahill, BAE, Enrique, JEvans, Santon
    Siggy, Silva, Bale, McLean, Dempsey
    Ba, Rooney, RVP

    1FT, 4.1 in the bank

Siggy and Dempsey rotate nicely enough for their home games, which I like the look of. Can't decide on which UTD mid to go for, cannot decide whether walcott is guaranteed ballache or not, can't decide how many chances to give Ba.

When in doubt do nothing ... thats still a very decent 15 from which to chose your 11. I'd keep Ba for at least one more game, if he can't score against Norwich at home then he's crocked. As for united mids, it's such an unknown at the moment. Risk of not having one is you could miss out on some nice points, or you could bring in a bench-warmer for the week ... 30% chance that any one of the three won't play.

Alreet lads. Valencia to drop again???? Fit, and with Wolves away at the weekend?? Mrs China Mag has kept hold this long. Really need him to be fit and playing so it cancels out the price drop. Means nothing if you keep him for the season.

At his new price, i'm really considering rejigging my transfer plans to bring him into my team as well as Rooney and Young/ Nani. Would mean not getting Evans, but the money saved in midfield would mean I could easily afford a Liverpool, Spurs defender instead. Thoughts? Will rotate 3 cheapies (Caulker/Senderos/Santon) alongside two top 4 defenders (Evans/BAE/Enrique/Kompany/Big Verm)

I think 3 MUN attackers is too much - JEvans is probably one of the best value players in the game - he's a must have imo, as is Rooney. JEvans, Rooney and one of the wingers is the way to go. As for which winger - we'll hopefully know a bit more in a week or two. I'm currently on Nani, bur far from confiident over his starting position!! If only one of them would get injured again! 😉

I've been all set for Evans/ Young (or Nani) / Rooney. But Valencia's price is becoming too good to ignore. But I want one of Young/ Nani for explosiveness. AAARRGGGHHHH!! I was looking ahead for a Dempsey replacement in GW33. Evans & Walcott or BAE/Enrique & Valencia?

I've got a feeling that, with Man Utd needing to catch up on goal difference, Valencia could play a lot at right back, which would make him less of an option. Would make things easier for all of us!

Slight dilemma - plan over the next 3 GWs is to do

    Bogdan, Skrtel/Enrique & Suarez -> Friedel, Kelly/Hughes/Senderos & Adebayor

However, I don't really want to do any of them until GW31. Rather than take a hit in GW31 does it make sense to lose one before then? Only viable option to me is Skrtel/Enrique -> one of the Fulham boys this week. Worth it?

        Morning Newman!

Haha, Suarez -> Ade this week did cross my mind, but Ade has che next week and I'd rather not play him for that.

Do you know if Kelly is the most secure of the 3 Fulham cheapies at the back? If so, Enrique -> Kelly this week means I can field JEvans (wol), Skrtel (qpr) and Kelly (SWA) this week, and Skrtel (WIG), JEvans (FUL) and Caulker (EVE) next week.

Then in GW31 I'd have enough in the bank to do Mignolet & Suarez -> Friedel & Adebayor

I had never thought Chelsea would go through to the next round.
      They performed like Typical Chelsea.
Wonder what would have happened if AVB was still there & Torres would have started?

A victory against all odds is what we badly needed to rejuvenate us 😀

Well RDM has done quite a few good things since he's taken over. But no matter what, he atleast has the players on his side. So far so good 😀

Torres was brilliant especially in extra time, except for his one shot (which was a difficult chance tbf but Torres of old would have scooped it with ease).

I backed your prediction too! Although I wasn't quite as accurate as I thought it would go to a penalty shootout. It seems your Chelsea boys may have turned a corner Elnino. Do you think they might have a chance of beating Citeh this weekend?

        Haha awsm, I remember.

The defence definitely does look more solid. Essien was far from his best yesterday - he was a liability last night. Romeu can take over. Anyone except Mikel please. I think we have a big chance and the timing of this game couldn't have been better with us gaining momentum and City going down. I can see it being a very low-scoring game and shall boil down to which team converts their chances better. I'm predicting a 1-1.

Get in the 2nd WC League which started the same week. Your 528 or 524 with the non included hit would rank 5th there.

    Ruddy,
    Skrtle, Kos, Jevans
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Ryo
    Rooney, Persie, Suarez -- 1FT, 0.6

    Vorm, Gilfy, McAuley, Simpson

Pretty worried about the whole Arse, Pool, United defenders and forwards all playing away. Pretty clueless about who to transfer this week but Id like to qualify for the PPC.

I think Kos and Ruddy have to be a contenders to be transferred out. The rest of the team looks fine for the weekend. In fact it might even be a good idea to wait it out and have the flexibility of 2 FT's next week. If it was me though I'd look to upgrade Ruddy. However I suspect you are just short of getting Schwarzer.

Maybe "limp" with your GK this week.

      Kos>Kaboul this week
      Ruddy>Schwartzer next week

This will set up a rotation with Simpson and Kaboul having

If making PPC is your goal. Then I would take a hit this week (I think you are strong enough to make it in even with a hit). Then you do not have to take a hit when head to head.

    Good Evening deadzoners.

Need your advice this week. Need to go 3 - 0 to advance in CL.

    My Team

    Mignolet/Sorenson
    Jevans/Enrique/Simpson/Senderos/Naylor
    Silva/Bale/Dempsey/Siggy/Moses
    RVP/Rooney/Ba

I want to save my FT this week.

Should I play 4 3 3 and bench Moses & Siggy ? (Ive never played this formation before)

or Play 3 4 3 ? If this formation who should i rest in Def Simpson or Senderos. Who should I rest in midfield Siggy or Moses?

As an Arsenal fan, I feel compelled to help you...

Moses doesn't and won't ever do anything at home... Siggy I feel will play well, but I can't see Fulham conceding in this one... Although I'm unsure whether Liverpool will keep a CS, I still think you have a better chance of 6 from Jenny, than a 6 from Siggy...

Play 433 and order your subs Siggy, Moses, Naylor...

I assume your captaining Rooney? I wouldn't try to outsmart your opponent, just go for maximum points and hope for the best...

      Good luck...

Good point.....I was thinking of dropping Moses actually this week. However, upon reflection, I have had him all season as my 5th mid. and i think i have only started him twice (he has been a sub maybe 4 times). At this point of the season, I'd rather use my FT elsewhere.

What do you think of Andrews? At least then i free up 0.5M

I haven't seen much of the Andrews kid, but he seems a significant goal threat. Could be worth a punt at that price.

Morrison is still worth the extra bit if you can afford him tho, being on corners & has great stats to back him up.

Even though I am enshrouded in FPL smugness these days (my Feb WC kicking in heavily), I still think I should do an RMT just to get some sombre Dead Zone perspectives,

    here goes

    Vorm
    BAE, Skrtel, Evans
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, McClean
    RVP, Rooney, Ba
    (Santon, Siggy, Caulker, Lindegaard)

    1 FT
    £1.9M

saving the FT and rolling on this week sound good?

I've given up on Lindy returning as well. However the keeper I plan to replace him with will not have good fixtures for yet a couple of weeks. But I am monitoring Lindy's price, and will pounce should he drop another before the deadline.

Preferably I would like to save my transfers should there be need for more important substitutions. In fairness, Vorm is doing a helluva job.

So how about team of the year? Not fantasy, but Premier league fist 11?

    For me:

    Vorm
    Walker Kompany Coloccini Evra
    Silva Parker Sessegnon Bale
    RVP Rooney

I might be biased since I am a spurs fan, but I think Parker and Bale have been incredible, and I honestly don't see another right back who has been better than Walker this year.

You rate Yaya that much, eh? I have thought all year that he has been good, but not great.

I actually don't think Modric has been great for us this year. Good, but definitely not as great as last year.

Enrique is a good shout, too. Ba over Rooney I can't possibly agree with.

Dempsey almost nipped Sess for that other central midfield spot.

I think Yaya's had a brilliant season and I never much liked him before. Modric is a class act, he niether gets the praise for Spurs attacks or for his grafting.
Ba has had such a good consistent season he's impossible to ignore, especially when he tore United a new one. Whereas Rooney's only now really coming back into the form he hit until October.
I wouldn't have Sess anywhere near it tbh, he was ineffective for far too much of the season.

I guess I thought even when he wasn't scoring, Sess was causing problems and finding space. It was only when the team was finally managed right that he broke out completely.

Your ba explanation makes sense, but I guess he has just been so poor lately that its difficult to place him higher. Well made point there, though.

Don't get me wrong, I love Modric, but he definitely did more for us last year. Parker has just done it all in the engine room for us.

Nah Parker's been quality but I figured... if i'm picking a 4-4-2 team i'd only have one dogwork type mid.. so it was either him or Yaya and I just think Yaya's had a slightly bigger impact in his team.

Watching Ba against Arsenal Monday i think his season could be more or less finished. He looked absolutely destroyed late on. Even had a decent chance to counter but it looked like his legs weren't up to it. So come May I have my doubts whether i'd name him in such a team again.

Walker and Colo are debatable but Mata in place of Sez imo. Sess had a poorish first half of the season and Mata is the one-man army for Chelsea's whole offense.

I agree, but a one man army is an otherwise poor offense doesn't impress me. I think Mata has had way too many games where he just didn't exist at all.

Yeah but imagined if Chelsea didnt get him, they wont be even winning some of their home games imo. I guess its not that Mata has been been consistently awesome like Silva, its just that there's no one I rate higher than him at the mo. Yaya/Dempsey/Sess or the likes has gone missing more and I rate Mata higher than them anyway lol.

That's really a very true point, I suppose.

I would disagree about Demps and Sess going missing more. Mata has had a lot on anonymous games, too. I probably Rate mata higher on skill, as well, but I think he has gone to sleep a lot, too.

Looks sound to me except the wingbacks.

Richards, Enrique & Yaya over Walker, Evra & Sess.

Sagna and Ivanovic are way better than Walker btw, imo.

Sagna is usually better, hands down. I just figured he has been hurt too much this year. Ivanovic.....you're just wrong, there, sorry. Ivanovic's defensive instincts are shocking. He, too, hasn't exactly nailed down the RB spot, either.

More yaya love huh? Wow, maybe I underestimated him, then.

Enrique over Evra is fair, but I do think Evra has been excellent this year.

Sess is looking lamer and lamer now that I think of it, but I would probably replace him with Dempsey over yaya. I guess I just don't see what Yaya did so well.

I disagree about Ivano. He's been brilliant and alert everytime he's played at RB, bar the second half in the United game.

Dempsey wouldn't fit in at central midfield.

Yeah, but he still hasn't played that much. Bos had that spot nailed down early in the year. It's hard to forget how awful he was in the United game, too.

It just seems if a team has any kind of good left wing presence, he is completely baffled.

Another one for Modric over Parker, huh? I guess I really am biased because I've not been crazy about how Modric has played, but I think Parker is the #1 reason we are third right now.

Allen has played really well, and he is definitely up there, but I just don't know is he's been that much better than some of the others mentioned.

I guess I see a difference between that and the best XI from the past year. Would I usually take Hart over Vorm? Of course. Has Hart had a better year: I don't think so. Same goes for Richards and Walker, for me.

Skrtel is just insane, for me. I would say Agger has WAY more to do with Liverpool's defensive success than he does.

Choose 3 of these 5 defenders: Evans, Enrique, Skrtle, Santon, Kelly (Ful)
Then I need to bench one of Morrisson, McClean or Walcott.

    Currently have:

    Krul
    Evans Skrtle Kelly
    Morrisson Walcott Bale Dempsey
    Ba Rooney RVP

    Thoughts??
