The Watchlist – Leighton Baines

Leighton Baines is like an expensive pair of jeans. You know the stitching, the cut and street-credibility are all better than the rest, but the price tag just seems that little bit too steep. Perhaps, you tell yourself, that pair from Primark isn’t that bad after all.

With a price tag of 7.8, the left-back is seen as a luxury that Fantasy managers can ill afford but, as Everton settle into the second half of the season in familiar resurgent fashion, Baines is starting to look worth every penny of his hefty price.

So what are Fantasy managers getting with Leighton Baines? First of all, starts are assured; last season he played every match, a feat he is set to once again achieve this term after failing to miss a single game. In terms of creativity, he notched up 11 assists in the previous campaign but, rather surprisingly, he has just two assists this time round, as Everton’s front men have too often failed convert his regular supply from the flank.

Instead, you are getting a considerable goal threat. Incredibly, for a defender, he is Everton’s top Premier League scorer with four goals to his name, just one less than his tally last season. Baines’ spot-kick duties, allied with his share of free kicks, have seen him notch some of the Premier League’s most spectacular goals in recent campaigns, most recently during Everton’s Gameweek 30 clash away to Swansea. His wonder free kick in last week’s win at the Liberty Stadium helped him accrue 15 points – a third double-digit haul of the season. Indeed, for defenders, only five-goal Thomas Vermaelen has proven more prolific in front of goal than the Toffees left-back.

Purchasers of Baines are also getting the added potential of clean sheets. An upturn in defensive performance has seen David Moyes’ side concede a single goal in their last four at home, snuffing out the likes of Chelsea, City and Tottenham. Further analysis of the stats shows Everton have conceded more than a single goal just three times since Gameweek 12 and, with a mere 32 goals against, have the fourth most impressive defensive record in the league to date.

With a favourable fixture list until the end of the season (WBA, nor, SUN,sto, man, FUL, wol, NEW) there is clear potential for Baines to increase his defensive returns, with perhaps only the trip to United in Gameweek 35 set to provide a stern test for Everton’s rearguard.

Bonus points also come with a Baines purchase. His bonus point tally of 15 is the highest of any defender in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. He also has the pedigree to avoid flagging at the end of the season. As Chris Glover’s recent Fantasy Football Scout article A Season Of Two Halves, showed there were only two top performers from the first half of the previous season who equalled and/or bettered their display as the season reached its end; Baines and City’s Joe Hart. With 124 points on the board, he may struggle to overhaul his 2010/11 total of 178 but he is, nonetheless, firmly on course to finish as the top scoring defender once again, currently sitting just one point behind Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the rankings.

With Everton in form and new boy Nikica Jelavic, in particular, looking capable of finding the net on a regular basis, Baines’ attacking output clearly has the potential to increase. There’s no doubt the Croatian’s keen eye for goal has already bolstered the Toffees frontline and, with someone of a more clinical nature converting his supply from out wide, Baines could be afforded plenty opportunity over the final couple of months to boost those paltry two assists.

    Jelavic or Cisse?

I feel like Jelavic is going to be on par with Cisse, but I'd have about a mil to spend on my defence.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts lads. I'm sure some are having the same problem as me.

Hmm I'd go Jellyman having seen last night and the Spurs game a few weeks back, especially for the money saved. Have only seen Cisse (goes without saying you aren't refering to Djbril!) vs Sunderland so not the greatest ga,e to judge.

I'm sticking with Ba personally, as I could use the transfer better elsewhere, Cisse seems sideways and Jelly has been acquired by my rival. Who you currrently have?

I have Rooney, RVP and Suarez. My rival who is 50 points behind me has Cisse and I know he's just transferred Rooney in! I know the right thing to do is get Cisse and cancel him out. But I don't want to win my league like that!

Posted this earlier and gonna again
I'm an everton fan.. atleast i supported them for years and still do as my 2nd favorite club(chelsea first).. and here are some points on baines
    1. Gonna share a lot of his set pieces with gibson, pienaar and jelavic.. corners, fks and indirect fks.. as compared to last year
    2. Everton playin more of a direct game due to jelavic and cahill's inability to score headers this season.. so the ball is played through the middle more often than not and even when baines gets to cross a ball there is no one there
    3. With jags etc available for cheaper(2.5 and even 3.2 cheaper) even if baines gets a CS it's pretty frustratin to own him. you just expect too much at that price
    4. Everton stoke gw 34 could be postponed and if you have pool and newcastle defenders who'll prob miss that week too you could be in trouble
    5. I've been pretty confident ownin baines the past 2 seasons.. this season it's mroe of a desperate gamble for me if i do decide to buy him..

Not sayin he aint a good buy, but i'd wager that in 2-3 weeks aguero/tevez/mata etc may start performin brilliantly leadin you to curse havin spent 7.8 on a defender when you could have got wilkinson and one of them instead(which will lead to a hit to get him out)

    Hope this helps

You have 2FT every fortnight so you can easily rectify Baines if it doesn't go to plan. Mata was looking very tired last night and there will be heavy rotation at Chelsea between now and the end of the season. Man City is like playing guess who with so many attacking players. You can't fault an attacking full back who plays every week, takes pens and is more threatening going forward than the likes of Cole, Evra and Gibbs.

guess you right in a way.. trust me though baines is a keep till end of season player to enjoy the full benefit.. ppl on here may get rid after 1 or 2 games of 2 pointers.. you have to be prepared to spend 7.8 on him and leave him in there and sacrifice a big hitter in mid/upfront in order to leave him in..

Yeah I think he needs to stay in to benefit from having him. I still don't see a big hitter up front for the 3rd spot worth getting atm. Drogba is too old and rotation prone to get in, Ade needs to liven up and play how he was earlier in the season and City need to get a settled side. Until then i'm happy with the likes of Holt (when he isn't suspended) and Papiss and play the fixtures.

Adam would never play in Downing's place.

It more likely guarantees a Spearing and Gerrard partnership in the middle for the rest of the season.

Downing is first choice at the moment and only ever likely to be replaced by Bellamy.

Makes sense for a one off. Other than Real, I'd say Chelsea were the most likely to get a clean sheet.

        I dunno.

I expected Benfica to score to be honest. Usually good at home.

Expected Real and Bayern if im honest.

YaYa or Dempsey for the run in? They would compliment my current midfield of Valencia/Bale/Siggy/Walcott

    Thanks in advance.

i gotta ask goatboy.. who are your strikers? cause siggy is a week in week out player.. and if you get yaya/dempsey you'll have to play 5 in midfield every week.. so need to know whether you got a cheapie etc upfront

I know Siggy had a good run, but I wouldn't play him week in week out.

Fair point. I've currently got RVP/Rooney/Ba. Ba not playing well at the moment but he does rotate well with a few of my midfield

Even though i said what i did above about baines, i gotta admit there is no defender in the game as excitin as him.. if you own him and he curls a beauty in/scores a penalty over the next 8 games there's nothin like it.. since there are a few weeks left i may get him in just to enjoy the end of the season more..

Yes you are seeing sense now. It does add some excitement to the game. For the majority of the defenders you are praying they don't concede for the entire game with nothing much else to hope for. At least Baines adds alot more to it in that respect.

i agree about the enjoyment part.. owned him most of the time the last few seasons(4.5 million!!) and it's fun as compared to the rest of the defenders in teh game.. i'm just not expectin much this time.. he gets 1 goal and an assist and 3 cleanies and that's 40 points and i'll be happy.. and he should do better if anythin
