Watchlist

The Watchlist – Leighton Baines

Leighton Baines is like an expensive pair of jeans. You know the stitching, the cut and street-credibility are all better than the rest, but the price tag just seems that little bit too steep. Perhaps, you tell yourself, that pair from Primark isn’t that bad after all.

With a price tag of 7.8, the left-back is seen as a luxury that Fantasy managers can ill afford but, as Everton settle into the second half of the season in familiar resurgent fashion, Baines is starting to look worth every penny of his hefty price.

So what are Fantasy managers getting with Leighton Baines? First of all, starts are assured; last season he played every match, a feat he is set to once again achieve this term after failing to miss a single game. In terms of creativity, he notched up 11 assists in the previous campaign but, rather surprisingly, he has just two assists this time round, as Everton’s front men have too often failed convert his regular supply from the flank.

Instead, you are getting a considerable goal threat. Incredibly, for a defender, he is Everton’s top Premier League scorer with four goals to his name, just one less than his tally last season. Baines’ spot-kick duties, allied with his share of free kicks, have seen him notch some of the Premier League’s most spectacular goals in recent campaigns, most recently during Everton’s Gameweek 30 clash away to Swansea. His wonder free kick in last week’s win at the Liberty Stadium helped him accrue 15 points – a third double-digit haul of the season. Indeed, for defenders, only five-goal Thomas Vermaelen has proven more prolific in front of goal than the Toffees left-back.

Purchasers of Baines are also getting the added potential of clean sheets. An upturn in defensive performance has seen David Moyes’ side concede a single goal in their last four at home, snuffing out the likes of Chelsea, City and Tottenham. Further analysis of the stats shows Everton have conceded more than a single goal just three times since Gameweek 12 and, with a mere 32 goals against, have the fourth most impressive defensive record in the league to date.

With a favourable fixture list until the end of the season (WBA, nor, SUN,sto, man, FUL, wol, NEW) there is clear potential for Baines to increase his defensive returns, with perhaps only the trip to United in Gameweek 35 set to provide a stern test for Everton’s rearguard.

Bonus points also come with a Baines purchase. His bonus point tally of 15 is the highest of any defender in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. He also has the pedigree to avoid flagging at the end of the season. As Chris Glover’s recent Fantasy Football Scout article A Season Of Two Halves, showed there were only two top performers from the first half of the previous season who equalled and/or bettered their display as the season reached its end; Baines and City’s Joe Hart. With 124 points on the board, he may struggle to overhaul his 2010/11 total of 178 but he is, nonetheless, firmly on course to finish as the top scoring defender once again, currently sitting just one point behind Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the rankings.

With Everton in form and new boy Nikica Jelavic, in particular, looking capable of finding the net on a regular basis, Baines’ attacking output clearly has the potential to increase. There’s no doubt the Croatian’s keen eye for goal has already bolstered the Toffees frontline and, with someone of a more clinical nature converting his supply from out wide, Baines could be afforded plenty opportunity over the final couple of months to boost those paltry two assists.

If Verm had played the same number of games as Baines and only scored 2 points in each he'd be about level on points.

If you give him one or two clean sheets, BPs and goals in those 9 games he'd be storming ahead. Can't see any evidence to suggest Baines is a better prospect.

A lot of teams play Saturday, then on the Monday night.
It could be a rotation nightmare. And if a player get a knock in the Saturday game we probably won't find out about it until they don't take the field on Monday.

So no transfers for me in GW31. I'm making sure I go into GW32 with 2 transfers.

If i am in competition with someone who has RVP and Rooney like myself does it make sense to captain someone like Baines on the basis if he produces i have a great week if his obvious captain fails and if its other way round i still get half of what he does? Seems to make sense but not sure if wrong logic.

If you are leading I'd aim to match them, if you are chasing then option for someone like Baines or Verm has a massive upsdie, but it can have a massive downside as well. I am tempted by Verm this week, but as it stands i will captain Clint, he looked Fulham's best player at OT, i think he'll get a goal or 2 as a differential (all rivals have shipped him)

My rule is I'm leading my league so try to play safe for cap'n ie Rooney or RVP. If you are chasing then you may have to think different. Defenders as a cap'n I have never done this season. But it's a brave man that does as for Mr Baines I want him in my team but I have to take a hit so I'm nervy!!

Considering Silva out, but for who?

    a) Valencia (also have Rooney and Evans)
    b) Bale (have no other Tott coverage)
    c) Stick with Silva

I was leaning towards sticking with Silva as I don’t fancy anyone versus Swansea (so unpredictably stingy) and you never know who will get the points in Man U’s midfield. Other thought for the transfer is a cheapie switch of Senderos to Wilkinson as that might be a better investment for the week.

    Thoughts?

Arsenal are playing with a freedom and confidence in their play. They are enjoying their football and don't have any other competitions to disrupt their current good form.

Kompany hasn't played yet and calf injuries can be unpredictable. I can see City stuttering further in the run in tbh.

In order to get Rooney I traded Suarez & Bale ---> Rooney and Rosicky (because I like his OOP and decent fixtures). What do you think, will Rosicky play / contribute? I see he's close to getting a bump up in price but don't see him on many team rosters.

No Man City cover will damage you. I would get Kompany instead of Verm if he is confirmed as back for the weekend. Or consider Yaya or Aguero (I take it you had Silva but have decided to get rid).

No City cover will not harm you unless Silva picks up, wouldn't class Kompany as cover, just a good defensive option.

    Silva Bale Siggy Surman Walters

Walters need to depart asap. He may have Wigan but he has absolutely no form. Maybe Yaya in

      Schwarzer

      Kompany, Kelly, Simpson/Enrique

      Silva, Bale, Siggy, Walters

Rooney, RvP. Ba as it is now.

Other option is Silva to Theo.

thanks mate, Silva out seems to be the way to go. i am in a good position at the top of my mini league, but lead has been cut to just 6 points after a horror show of 27 last week. all main rivals have Silva so concerned if he scores big i will suffer.

think i have paid more attention to my overall rank and discarded threat of rivals, now starting to sweat a bit.

always prioritse ML, if you do well in that, rank will follow, trust me. I've never been higher than 64k ish at the end of any season. Last year was first year of work's league and I tried to shoot for GW rank and lost ground i couldn't make back up. This year i have focused on winning my ML (which I am currently doing) and find myself just outside 5k.

De Gea is in next week. I know what you said about keepers, but it has just become so frustrating benching the wrong keeper every week. Thus I am getting De Gea in as my United differential and doubling on defence. he will play every week bar GW36 (cit) when I will play Mings (BOL)

I think it will pay off, Valencia will get more minutes than Young or nani IMO, but could still be rotated and United's goals and assists could come from anywhere. De Gea is a good bet IMO. Other mids performing simialr to Tony V (Theo for example) not many sides keeping CS or conceeding only 1 regularly, plus if United have an off-day De Gea makes saves.

my other change was Young to Theo. My first hit in 20 weeks. But please do me a favour. Stop changing your striker each GW to whoever happened to score in the previous week. Find a striker you think will do well all season and stick with him, it;s why I own Yak. Cheap, on Pens, always capable of scoring.

Nah they are just invincible at the Nou Camp. I would love Milan to progress but I think Milan needed a 1-0 lead to take to the Camp. Then barca would have a bit pressure and Milan could play defensive and counter like they did tonight with no real pressure to score.

Would love Milan to do it. 1-1 draw. Ibra is the key. He won a lot of headers today. If he can get the ball down and slide in a through pass or hit a wonder goal. Set piece possibly.

    Do I:

Play Enrique or Taiwo this week ? The latter could score (again!) and leave me wishing I had played him.

    Vote now !

    Thanks...!

Steaming? I'm cruising in the luxurious comfort of Ade themed cushions and bling hung round the rear view mirror whilst I sip champers from the mini bar 😉

Have 1 FT and nothing pressing - should I switch Young for Valencia (intend to do so anyway) or leave it another week?

Nice to have 2 freebies in case of emergency.

Get rid of the angelic Suarez for whoever you plan to sell him for anyway.

    UCL Fantasy updated.

50 points this GW sees me drop 649 places to 3663 🙁 At least I managed to sneak past Archie 46-42 in the KunAir H2H league.
