Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek Thirty Four – Saturday

Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero tear Norwich apart as City suggest the title race is far from finished. West Brom and Sunderland pick up home clean sheets yet again, while a Gylfi Sigurdsson-inspired Swansea dump Blackburn at the Liberty and all but seal their own bid for top-flight survival.

Carlos Tevez
City’s away problems have, notoriously, been their Achilles heel this season. Despite dropping just two points at home over the entire campaign so far, Roberto Mancini’s side have been lacklustre on the road, winning two of their last ten in an appalling run that had seen them score just five goals. The stage was set, then, for Tevez yesterday, and he didn’t disappoint. A hat-trick and assist tore Norwich to pieces as City hammered six past a stunned Canaries side, with the gap at the top now temporarily trimmed to a couple of points. Mancini’s men have now notched 10 goals in the two games since Tevez returned to the starting line-up, with his partnership with Sergio Aguero looking unstoppable. The maximum bonus will surely follow, as will plenty transfers in – a trip to Wolves is likely to offer further attacking returns for the prodigal son, with Tevez clearly focused and intent on making up for lost time in sensational style.

Sergio Aguero
A brace at Carrow Road followed on from his two goal, two assist performance against West Brom on Wednesday. Incredibly, despite a total of 21 goals so far, you’d have to go all the way back to Gameweek 5 to find the last time Aguero scored in back-to-back matches – yesterday also brought an end to the dire away run that saw Aguero fail to notch in his last ten on the road. Providing United win their next two and City triumph at Wolves, then, the Gameweek 36 Manchester derby at the Etihad could allow Mancini’s men to cut the lead to two points – the early-season form has maybe returned too late but Aguero could be set for a significantly strong end to the campaign as City go all-out for goals in their tussle for the title.

David Silva
The Spaniard grabbed his fifteenth assist of the season yesterday, edging further ahead of Antonio Valencia (13) in the rankings. Silva is picking up in performance as the campaign comes to the boil – he also scored in the 4-0 win over West Brom, having returned a single assist in the previous ten Gameweeks. Priced at 9.6, down from a season-high of 10.6 in Gameweek 27, Silva is slowly but surely producing the goods as a Fantasy force again and could prove a pivotal figure for City over the final four Gameweeks if the Etihad club can maintain their current level of performance.

West Brom Defence
Since the arrival of Liam Ridgewell in the January transfer window, the Baggies backline have proven to be particularly reliable at the Hawthorns – despite losing Jonas Olsson to a groin problem in the warm-up, yesterday’s 1-0 win over QPR was their fourth clean sheet in the last five home games. Only Newcastle have managed to score away since Ridgewell made his home debut in Gameweek 26, in a run that has also brought four wins for Roy Hodgson’s side. The visit of Villa in Gameweek 36 affords further chance of defensive returns and, while a home clash with Arsenal in the final match of the season will deter many Fantasy managers, West Brom’s defenders could offer a decent option next term if they can replicate their current home resilience.

Peter Odemwingie
Over 10,000 Fantasy managers drafted in the West Brom forward ahead of the home clash with QPR. Having been given the night off in Wednesday’s mauling at the Etihad, Odemwingie returned to the Baggies’ starting lineup – his recent role out wide seems to have come to an end, as he partnered Marc-Antoine Fortune up front, with Chris Brunt stationed on the right wing. The Nigerian picked up the Fantasy points for the first time since Gameweek 26, providing an assist for Graham Dorrans’ winner and, with Villa and Bolton to follow in the next three, could offer further chance of returns before the season is out.

Sunderland Defence
With Wolves conceding an average of three goals per game prior to yesterday’s trip to the Stadium of Light, many were expecting a goal fest. While Terry Connor’s backline defied the odds, the Black Cats once again picked up a home clean sheet – their sixth in the last eight in front of their own fans. Martin O’Neill recently hinted at affording Craig Gordon some game time but this failed to materialise yesterday, with Simon Mignolet maintaining his role between the posts. The 4.4 priced Black Cats keeper continues to rack up the returns; his average of 4.2 points per game is the third best of any first-choice keeper, matching the likes of Joe Hart and edging out Brad Friedel and Tim Howard.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
At the seventh time of asking, the Icelandic international grabbed his first goal at the Liberty Stadium as Swansea ended their four-game losing streak in emphatic fashion. All six of Sigurdsson’s previous goals had come on the road, with just a couple of assists to show for his previous home endeavours. Sigurdsson was also belatedly credited with an assist for Scott Dann’s own goal and, pre-bonus, picked up an 11 point haul yesterday. After fourteen appearances for the Swans, then, his current average of 6.2 points per game is top for midfielders, with Clint Dempsey’s 5.8 in second place. Despite making a mockery of his 5.6 price tag, Sigurdsson is still owned by just 6.8% of Fantasy managers and, with Bolton and Wolves up next, is afforded plenty opportunity to rack up the points before closing out the campaign with games against United and Liverpool.

Nathan Dyer
While Sigurdsson steals the limelight amongst the Swansea midfielders, Dyer and Scott Sinclair have fallen way off the pace. The latter has now failed to find the net since Gameweek 23, while Dyer hadn’t scored since Gameweek 21 prior to yesterday’s visit of Blackburn. Having scored just one goal in their previous four matches, Brendan Rodgers side had been woefully out of sorts up front but the 3-0 win saw them notch more than two goals for only the fourth time this season. Dyer’s goal just before half-time saw him break the 100 point mark and in terms of “value”, he’s the third top midfielder this term, behind Victor Moses and team mate Joe Allen.

Michel Vorm
The Dutchman was required to make just a couple of saves in yesterday’s romp as Swansea picked up their first home clean sheet since Gameweek 28. Vorm now has 13 clean sheets for the season and is only one behind Joe Hart in the race for the Golden Gloves award – those aforementioned games with Bolton and Wolves offers a chance to rack up more and, with Rodgers’ side now 13 points clear of the drop zone with just four matches remaining, the pressure is almost certainly off. Blackburn and Wolves cannot overhaul the Welsh club now, while QPR would need to win all their remaining matches and hope Swansea lose all theirs in order to climb above them by a point.

I think getting in City players makes sense, being blinded by the DGW is a danger. Personally I can't think of more then 6 worthwhile DGW players.

      Everton - baines possibly
Spurs - BAE then Bale or Ade if their form picks up
Newcastle - Cisse, HBA , Krul
Liverpool - probably not worth it
Chelsea - Mata or Lampard but rotation issues
Fulham - Dempsey....but probably will dissapoint.

as an united fan, city could easily rip apart united with their form right now.
      especially with tevez.

Best Bolton mid/striker to get in?

Petrov - Flatters to deceive? Rotation?
Eagles - Been on the bench?
Ryo - Hype player who hasn't done much in FPL terms? Rotation?
    Mark Davies - A 2 pointer?
    Reo-Coker - A 2 pointer?
Kevin Davies - Past it? Rotation?
    N'Gog - Done little?
Klasnic - Explosive but not a regular?

I THINK the only two worth it are Reo-Coker and Petrov.
Reo-Coker - ever present, bit of a punt for a rare goal.
Petrov - has the ability, on form, still may be rotated ...

I'm backing BAE, Bale, Dempsey, Ben Arfa, Cisse and also have Cahill and Santon to choose from in defence. Can't wait to see people hopelessly transferring in the likes of Suarez for a 4 pointer

Hate using the word 'essential' but ...

No I would go Aguero... I collated some points from earlier... here you go:

Just watched the Man City highlights. Here are some points I gathered re: the Tevez vs Aguero discussions:

            - Aguero played an average position that was further forward
            - Aguero had more chances on goal
            - Aguero had more time on the pitch
            - Tevez’s passing vision was better (better assist potential)
            - Aguero’s finishing appeared to be more clinical
            - Tevez was a better poacher
            - Aguero looks like he is really hitting form with his running/finishing
            - Tevez looks like he is out to prove something

            some other facts:
            - Aguero is owned by more FF players
            - Aguero is 2nd choice penalty taker (after Balotelli)
            - Aguero is cheaper by 0.7mil (irrelevant if you only wanted either player GW35)
            - Aguero has more transfers (knee jerking)
            - Aguero has a history of poor away form until recently.

Decision: I’m going to select Aguero this GW against Wolves. Probably captain him too.

Why do you think that Aguero is pen taker? Tevez was the regular pen taker before he went to play golf

Depending on today I am thinking of doing Rooney--->Tevez/Aguero and Valencia/Walcott---->Dempsey for no hit. I am 60pts behind mini league and could be around 40 behind if my 2 trinities perform as he forgot to change team and is playing with 8 players (including Jarvis, Britton and Gibbs).

Tevez/Aguero will then become Adebayor for the DGW. I will also get Baines or Pienaar for a hit or maybe both for -8. What looked like an impossible task to catch 170pts 8 weeks ago is not realistic. Time to take risks.

My team for next season, since this one has gone so badly:

    Federici (reading), Mignolet
Caulker (spurs), Rafael, Verm, Santon, Kompany
Gotze (Man U), BArfa, Sess, M Phillips (Blackpool), Young
CR7 (Man City), RvP, Lambert (Southampton)

Assuming that Reading, Southampton and Blackpool (pretty unlikely) will be promoted, and that Gotze and CR7 will come to prem!

Don't hate on this team btw, I'm just a bit bored 🙂

Some people who have managed values of £116m do have an advantage over those of us around £110m, but it's not crucial at this stage as there are cheap players still performing.

Definitely, mine's valued at 112,8m. The most expensive players don't always score most points, but the greater amount of money also gives you more time to make the decision -> sometimes you don't have to make an early transfer to avoide price rise, because you have a surplus.

        THIS

I was on about 113.5m, which does help to squeeze in a bigger hitters but the best thing is the fact you don't have to worry about money and price rises/falls. I've taken out RvP, and will bring him back at a massive lost but I can take it at this stage of the season.

          Troll:

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum.

You don't have to abuse dead children on a R,I.P site to be a troll. The fact is his posts only serve to inflame and piss people off. So I'm afraid you're wrong.

Oof tough one man. Think you've got a good team for GW35 actually. With the team you have, I imagine you'd play:
      Vorm
      Hutton, Kompany, Verm/Evans
      Valencia, Bale, Dempsey, McClean
      RVP, Rooney, Cisse
      Mignolet | Moses, Verm/Evans, Simpson

I'd wait to see how the games play out today & tomorrow before making any moves. Perhaps someone from Bolton for their 2 DGWs in a row is worth considering. And based on how Rooney performs today & next week, you can think about bringing in Ade for Spurs' DGW.

Is Surman now an essential pick for any team? He is a solid and reliable bench player and scored a fantastic goal. This should ensure he gets a good run in the team and would solve everyone's problems in choosing who to bench this week. Opinions please! especially NL

No - although he is good fun. He and Bradley Johnson are the ones, but Lambert rotates without rhyme or reason, sometimes conforming to Granville's Law.

Probably won't be so cheap next Season.

But there's competition from McClean, Siggy and HBA who aren't much more expensive, it depends whether you want a player to bench almost every week, or to rotate 5 midfielders depending on fixtures

Yeah, the rest of your front 8 do look like play nearly every week picks, so Surman does seem to be the best of the ultra-cheapies, but he isn't guaranteed starts as no one at Norwich seems to be.

Basically, if you have him don't get rid of him, if you don't, no reason to waste a transfer getting him in 😉

Haha, he went for a "haircut" so you missed him.
Who would you sell him for/who would you sell instead?
I don't have a problem with benching bigger players with awkward fixtures, so far it hasn't bitten me (yet) and in case rotation/injuries kick in there is a back-up I'm comfortable playing, but I know you prefer to have a benchable mid.

Dempsey. Although I might sell Valencia instead if he does alright. I plan on downgrading Rooney to Cisse at some point so it could be a hit if I did it before the next gameweek

              As in

              Valencia > Dempsey
              or
Rooney, Surman > Cisse, Dempsey -4pts

Who to bench this week Sess (avl) or Siggy (bol)?

Currently benching Sess due to Siggy having better form/fixture. Really hard having to bench Sess though.

It has to be Sess, Sunderland aren't scoring at the moment plus Siggy is a goal machine, in fact I'm looking at getting rid of the Sess for Barfa for GW 36!

Hmmm may get rid of him myself in GW36. I had planned to do Siggy to Pineaar in GW36 but I may loose Sess instead.

I always captain Dempsey for his home games but with Wigans form I think it could be a low scoring week for him.

    For GW36:

Given that I'll probably play Caulker and Sigurdsson (home to Wolves), and RVP because he is undroppable and I want to bench Evans/Valencia/ another defender that week, it looks like 8 DGW players is the max I am going for, possibly less if I get Tevez.

Are those 3 players reasonable choices over DGW players?

I'm benching Evans, Vermaelen and Valencia that week.

I think they are reasonable choices for sure, especially with the potential rotation that is likely in GW36.

I'm actually now swaying towards just 6 DGWers (no hits), and playing 1 of Caulker/Turner, Siggy, Sess, RVP & Tevez in GW36. Thoughts on this plan?

      GW35: Rooney -> Tevez
      GW36: Kompany & Walcott -> Baines & Bale

      Migs, Bogdan
      Kompany, JEvans, Skrtel, Caulker, Turner
      Dempsey, Walcott, Sessegnon, Valencia, Siggy
      RVP, Rooney, P Cisse
      Bank 0.6m, 2 freebies

I like the choices 😉 But yeah that looks pretty decent, very similar to my team plan. What if Rooney plays well today though?

Yeah, looks good to me, I'm not sure it's worth hits for 10 or 11 DGWers like some are talking about, there are still two weeks to go after that.

Wolves just aren't scoring goals, I can see 6 points from Caulker, if I took a hit for a DGWer then they'd have to get a minimum of 10, so I reckon it's worth playing him.
Course if he doesn't get a cleanie then everything I've said is wrong 😉
