Euro 2012

Captain Poll – Matchday Two – Day Four

With uncertainty surrounding his starting role this evening, Fernando Torres had just 4% of the votes in the Matchday 2, Day 3 Captain Poll heading into the match with Republic of Ireland. A double from El Nino handed those Fantasy managers who gave him the armband a 20 point return, though it was David Silva who stole the show with a goal and two assists in the 4-0 rout:

Andres Iniesta was the runaway winner of the Captain Poll with 42% of the votes cast but, somewhat surprisingly, has not been awarded an assist for his role in Silva’s first goal. The below quote from the McDonald’s site would suggest Iniesta should have been handed the assist after Shay Given parried his effort into Silva’s path – perhaps the fact that Silva had a couple of touches before netting has gone against the Barcelona man.

An attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal.

This evening’s early kick-off saw the forwards draw a blank in the McDonald’s game. Mario Mandzukic’s classification as a midfielder helped the Croatian to a 14 point armband haul after he grabbed the equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Italy, while the Azzurri’s Andrea Pirlo picked up a 16 point captaincy return due to his free kick opener and eight recovered balls. After disappointment for many this evening, it’s stick or twist time again tomorrow, then…

Tournament co-hosts Ukraine will be seeking their second Group D win in the early kick-off against France and Andriy Shevchenko offers a decent differential candidate, with an ownership of less than 5% in the McDonald’s game. The skipper arrives on the back of his double against Sweden, while Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka both picked up assists in the 2-1 win over Erik Hamren’s men, with the latter also firing five shots at goal.

For Laurent Blanc’s side, the front three are the main protagonists. Samir Nasri grabbed a goal and created eight goalscoring opportunities against England, Franck Ribery provided his team mates with six chances to find the net and resultantly picked up an assist, while Karim Benzema had six shots against Roy Hodgson’s side.

England and Sweden square up in the later encounter, with the former having conceded just once in three games under their new manager. For England, Ashley Young and Danny Welbeck are likely to carry the threat up front, though Steven Gerrard’s set-piece duties and likely points for recovered balls – given his side’s tactics – makes the Liverpool man another armband alternative.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the obvious captaincy choice for the Swedes – despite returning a single goal in his opener, he had four shots and provided four goalscoring chances against Ukraine. Seb Larsson and Kim Kallstrom’s creativity could see them both play a part as the Swedes attempt to hand Hodgson his first defeat in charge of the national side, though doubts remain over who will lead the line, with Markus Rosenberg, Ola Tiovonen and Johan Elmander all vying for the lone striker role.

    M: Iniesta - Dzagoev - Pirlo - Nasri - Fortounis

    F: Ronaldo - Silva - Jelavic

    BANK: 0.5M

    What to do with my 1FT? Thinking I need some Dutch or German cover? Really would love to get Pilar in for Fortounis but don't know if its worth a hit. Are people taking hits? I've contemplated taking one or two. 6 point hit for 3 more transfers doesn't sound TOO bad.

      NO HITS, just not worth it with the lack of payback time.

      The way I see it your options are;

      CR7 > Gomez, but there is rotation issues and CR7 could shine.
      Fortunis > Pilar, sounds boring but there is nothing wrong with your team apart from him.

    Anderson - Chalkias
    Alba - Maggio - Lescott - Selassie - Maniatis
    Iniesta - Nasri - Dzagoev - Shirokov - Pilar
    CR7 - Benzema - Cassano

    What would you do with this team?

    A: CR7 > Rooney .. Not so convinced with CR7 , but also doubt If Rooney will start.
    B: CR7 > Gomez .. Will he be rested?
    C: CR7 > RvP .. Dutch are not in form yet.
    D: What else?

          Scored, and Holland are desperate. Portugal haven't exactly shown themselves to be defensively great either. He's on penalties too.

          Of the choices you gave Gomez, Ronaldo or Rooney, Rooney is a much bigger risk since we have no idea on his fitness and he plays on the last day, Ronaldo is badly out of form and Gomez is uncertain to start.

          Doesn't seem that far fetched to me.

    How do these moves sound?
    a) Fabs->Pirlo
    b) Ronaldo->Gomez/Silva

    Is a 3 pt hit justified in the game?

      Don't take a hit.

      Just do one of them.

      Recommend RVP over Gomez or Silva considering circumstances.

        I read what you said about RVP, just don't feel the same way. Plus I think Portugal have a pretty good defense which is constantly underestimated.

          Fair enough, but their record in qualifying and their 3 goals conceded this tournament don't inspire much confidence.

      Both are good looking moves. Hits are tough to take in a game that's this short in duration

    Would it be crazy to go Muller > Lewandowski for GW3? Muller just hasn't looked like himself. Would go for Torres but already have 2 Spain, and couldn't see anyone else worth putting in w/out taking hits.

        Other options are: Bendtner, Shevchenko, Nani, Jelavic, Postiga, Varela, Robben. Not a lot to work with

        Muller takes on Denmark, he will play the 90 minutes, and Germany look dangerous. Get rid of Muller after the 3rd matchday.

          Personally see POL scoring 2, Lew will be in the mix imo. Agree that germans look dangerous, but will they look the same with rotation?

            How much rotation are we talking about...It's exactly why I want to avoid Gomez. Ideally speaking, Klose should get some game-time. Bring in Gomez after the 70th minute.

            But I don't know what the manager is thinking...That's what I would have done.

      Keep Muller, class will out! Torres scored two against us today, fair play to him. We normally have a reliable enough defence but as swell as being outclassed they just had no fight in them today. Both goals Croatia conceded were from set pieces and Torres doesn't do free-kicks or penalties. He might get on the end of a free kick or corner but I reckon Muller is the better option against a porous enough Danish defence. I'm in the same sort of dilemma. Depending on how they do will prob use my free transfer to move out Ibrahimovic, Benzema, Jelavic or Yarmalenko if I think it'll improve my points for next Matchday.

        Almost folly to have a big outlay for next Matchday on keepers and defenders with so few cleansheets and only 3 goals and 4 assists combined from defenders. Fair enough in the quarters, not many cheap keepers or dfenders left then I'd imagine but the extra 5m will help a bit.
