Scout Report – Steven Whittaker

Norwich City’s first foray into the summer transfer market has begun with the acquisition of Steven Whittaker from Rangers on a four-year deal. The 28-year-old Scot becomes Chris Hughton’s first signing since joining from Birmingham last month and arrives on a free deal due to the cancellation of his contract at the crisis-hit Glasgow giants:

Although Hughton has stressed the new boy’s adaptability played a major part in his thinking, it’s likely that the move will address the problematic right-back area for the Norfolk club, with Kyle Naughton returning to parent club Spurs following the end of his season-long loan deal in 2011/12. The new man in charge revealed:

In Steven we have a player who is very versatile – he can play anywhere across the back four and anywhere across midfield, so there’s plenty of versatility there. It’s probably a good time for him. He has of course been used to playing at a very high level when he was at Rangers, and in a lot of big games with a passionate crowd behind him. So the stage of the Premier League is certainly one that won’t faze him with his experience.

The Statistics

A boyhood Hearts fan, Whittaker began his career at city rivals Hibs back in 2001/02. He lasted six seasons at the Edinburgh club but failed to nail down a regular role until his third campaign at Easter Road, when new boss Tony Mowbray installed him as first-choice at right-back. Whittaker made a total of 141 league appearances and scored four goals before securing a move to Rangers in the summer of 2007 for a fee of £2m.

Starting off as a left-back at Ibrox, Whittaker was afforded the chance to move to his more natural position on the opposite flank after the transfer of Alan Hutton to Spurs in January 2008. During his stint at the Glasgow club, Whittaker established himself in the national squad and racked up the silverware with as many as eight trophies accrued.

In total, he played 150 league games at Rangers, returning 19 goals and 16 assists, though the 2009-10 season was a particular stand-out as he grabbed 11 goals in all competitions. After objecting to the transfer of his contract from Rangers to a new company set up by owner Charles Green following the club’s recent financial meltdown, Whittaker was effectively a free agent and links up with compatriots Simon Lappin and Russell Martin at Carrow Road.

The Prospects

A regular role in Hughton’s back-four looks likely for the 6 foot 1 inch defender but Norwich’s problems in defence under Paul Lambert last time round need immediate address. The Canaries shipped 66 goals in the 2011/12 campaign – the joint-fourth worst record in the league – and picked up a mere three clean sheets all season, conceding in every one of their 19 fixtures on the road.

A price tag in the region of 4.5 can be expected but until we witness Norwich’s ability to keep out opponents, Fantasy managers are likely to steer well clear of their defensive assets. The fixture list has been particularly cruel to the Carrow Road club – Hughton’s first couple of months look horrendous and hand them just two decent looking matches – home clashes with QPR and West Ham – in the first eight Gameweeks of 2012/13.

Their first four road trips (ful, tot, new, che) could easily see them leave empty-handed, while the visit of Liverpool and Arsenal hardly entices investment. Essentially, then, it affords us a chance to sit back and assess Whittaker’s potential, analysing his ability to adapt to his new surroundings, while keeping a keen eye on the club’s progress under Hughton before we even begin to consider the prospect of drafting in the new boy or any of his fellow Norwich team mates.

          For info -

Jamie Ness is a cracking up and coming centre mid. Hes better than Mccarthury and Mccarthur at WIgan. That type of player, dont fancy many FPL returns although he can hit a cracker of a shot (youtube Ness v Celtic).

My old concern and worry is that he is quite injury prone, and if hes trainig with Huth and ShawX I dont fancy him being fit all of the time.

          Expected FPL price 5.0.

With stokes fixtures its worth waiting a while and seeing where they play him, good signing though.

Not sure if he is better than the Wigan duo as they now have FPL experience and settled in well. Need to see if Ness can manage to do the same. Plus Ness was playing in the SPL with Rangers whereas the other 2 were at a struggling Hamilton side. He does look a good player though. You just hope Pulis doesn't do a usual and can't bring himself to pick players with ability over the powerhouse players.

Good points well made. I was comparing Ness to the duo on their ability in SPL, admittedly youll look better at Rangers with better players around you. I think he does have potential to make in the PL but I dont think Stoke is the right club for him. We'll see though.

funny how they are taking the leftovers of other teams and going back to win the championship
the likes of pirlo (who was too old for milan to renew his contract which is the biggest insult you cna receive from ac milan)
barzagli who was sent to german couple of years ago because no italian team wanted him
bonucci who was considered as a promising young player that turned to a flop
and now lucio whose contract was cancelled by inter

keep in mind that team that just made it to the CL see their income boost hugely thus can afford signing new players while other team who are CL regulars have their finances already stretched

So Arsenal off to play in Africa on the 5th of August. I remember when Man Utd had a couple of games there pre-season and half their squad went down ill for the start of the season. I just don't see it as a good place to play close to the start of the season. Early July might make sense.

I really don’t see why Chelsea fans are smirking at the thought of AVB coming to Spurs. Surely his 8 month spell at chelsea shouldn’t reflect as it was only a part of his career. When he was coming to Chelsea, there was so much of anticipation as he was hailed as the Genius Behind Porto’s Renaissance.

I think he has a great chance to succeed at Spurs, and some of the signings he is planning on certainly look really interesting. Young players with a promising future, just like the manager.

In fact, just because RDM won Chelsea the CL, doesn’t imply he is gonna have a great year. You have gotta admit he had a really lucky spell for Chelsea. Whether that’s gonna continue, we will know soon enough. I’d like to see him coping without his favored striker, Drogba this year. And are Chelsea fan’s really confident of Torres? Don’t kid yourself, you aren’t. Del Bosque certainly wasn’t, that’s why he preferred a false nine over him.

No the other part of his long career as "main coach" was one season in Porto (great season btw) and one season at Academica (not so good season)... So he has one mediocre season, then a great season (in a club who wins all the time with corruption) and a terrible season... what does this say about him?

    Right ok

    Stevie Whittaker,

Kind of Alan Hutton esque player. Decent going forward and average defending, as Paul rightly says hes very very versatile and can play across the back four as well as in a right wing role.

Most noteably though is that he is a great penalty taker. With Grant holt leaving i dont know the pecking order of PKs but if Whittaker plays andis 4.5 and is on pens he will be in my team regardless of fixtures.

Yeah, I just seen your post on the previous thread. Its very bad times to be a bear. the Next 48 hours are crucial. The SPL clubs will vote to determine whether or not we will be in the SPL next season, its likely they will vote "No".

If they do then its to the SFL to vote to see where/if they want Rangers. SKY, ESPN ect want Rangers in Div 1 as do most SPL clubs, but us Rangers fans want to the powers to maintain sporting integrity and send us to Div 3.

Worst case scenario we will not be in any league next year and Rangers will be resigned to the past tense.

At first there was the EBT sham, which is still under investigation (there are rumours that Arsenal are going to be investigated in the same way if Rangers are found guilty). Our old chairman decided to jump ship before all of this came out and sold it to a businessman whos sole ambition was to make as much money as possible by ruining our club. He didnt pay PAYE last year and pocketed the lot, then when Rangers went into administration he appointed his own adminstrators and they made a fortune themselves before deciding to liquidate the club.

We just want it to end. We didnt know it was happening in the background.

Wars have lasted a lesser time than this.

I think that happened at Portsmouth with an administrator who had business connections with the club's owners. I don't know how that can be allowed.

Oh wait a minute..........yes I do it's because all the rich B**tards are in cahoots.
and the law makers in this country are probably even more corrupt than anywhere else. **@(&^ %^&&* $""!!$&&

seen it around a couple places but honestly dont remember where or if they were reliable. last place I saw was a soccer memes page on facebook I liked previously, surely a reliable source right? ;).

anyways what i've heard is he asked the ref (AR i believe if i remember correcty) to call it a bit early out of respect for the italians but it ended up not mattering because right after he asked the stoppage time was officially up. but everyone is applauding his sportsmanship and such. just wondering if these reports are true or not

Seen from his point of view, it is probably his last chance in England to make a positive impression, so he must perform this time around.

He signed a contract with Fulham til the end of the season from Stuttgart. This expired, leaving him as a free agent and open to any new wage offers by other clubs. Reading offered £65,000 wage per week and he took it. No transfer fee needed since he is not bound to any club.
