FPL Begin Releasing Player Prices Via Twitter

There’s nothing quite like a slow reveal to elevate the anticipation. This afternoon, the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) took the decision to tease and tantalise us Fantasy managers, offering a glimpse into what’s to come next season by rolling out three player prices on their official twitter feed:

It started just after midday, with the following tweet…

Ahead of Fantasy Premier League 2012/13 launching later this month, which player values would you most like to know now

An hour later, after a frenzy of requests, our appetites were momentarily sated with the next little titbit of information:

Here are today’s three player values: Eden Hazard (CHE) £9.5m, Pavel Pogrebnyak (RDG) £5m and Park Ji-Sung (QPR) £6m.

You have to give them credit here – it’s a clever little ploy, with the opening line in particular leaving us desperate for more now. After this evening’s tweet (below) we’re eager for further revelations:

Thursday’s player values will include new signings Gylfi Sigurdsson (TOT) and Shinji Kagawa (MUN)

Tomorrow is set to bring more our way, then, ahead of the game’s release sometime in the next week or so, while the prices so far give us plenty to ponder:

Eden Hazard comes in at 9.5 – the same valuation afforded to Juan Mata last season – though his classification, as yet unclear, will be crucial. The Belgian’s former team mate Gervinho arrived as a forward in 2011/12 and both played in the wide areas in Lille’s 4-3-3; the difference is that the Ivorian played on the flank in a 4-3-3 role at Arsenal, whereas Chelsea are set to roll out a 4-2-3-1, meaning Hazard will be utilised as an attacking midfielder next term. Classifying Hazard as a midfielder would clearly be the ideal scenario for Fantasy managers for the upcoming season – the idea of him as a forward holds far less appeal. Relatively speaking, what will today’s news mean for Mata’s price? After accruing 162 points in his debut campaign, you’d expect some sort of rise – if this proves to be the case, Hazard could well pick up plenty more suitors as we look to balance our budgets. Looking at the Sky game, Mata is considerably dearer than Hazard, coming in at 8.9 to the new boy’s 7.7.

Pavel Pogrebnyak’s 5.0 valuation is lower than most had anticipated. The Russian looks nailed-on for Brian McDermott’s promoted side and his exploits with Fulham in the second half of last season suggest he could be something of a bargain. Six goals in 12 games at the Cottage harvested an average of 4.5 points per game in 2011/12 and with game time guaranteed as the target man in a front two, many could be swayed by such a price. The acquisition of Nicky Shorey may also inadvertently boost the Russian’s appeal – Shorey is likely to vie with Ian Harte for starts and, if the latter is not on the pitch, Pogrebnyak may be the next in line for spot-kicks. FPL have certainly been kind to Reading’s new signing in comparison to other Fantasy games – Pogrebnyak’s exploits last time round have earned him a mid-price valuation in the Sky game, at 7.2; only 0.3 less than Djibril Cisse, for example.

A cost of 6.0 for Ji-Sung Park was pretty much as anticipated. The South Korean shifts from his previous FPL starting price of 7.0 at United and represents a drop in faith in QPR’s midfield assets last term – the likes of Joey Barton and Adel Taarabt both finished last term with a valuation of less than 6.0. Taken in context, though, it asks questions of Taarabt’s likely price this time round – the Moroccan picked up attacking returns in four of his last five home games and began to find his feet as the season drew to a close. A similar valuation is likely to see him favoured over Park by many, with set-piece duties also in his locker – while the former United man is reasonably priced, he may still struggle to pick up interest. Judging by the Sky game, not much separates them; Park is 4.8 to Taarabt’s 5.2, while Barton comes in at 5.0.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Anyone pre-ordered a Google Nexus 7?!

Tethered to my phone, I think it'll be great for checking in on the site during the week. Screen is bigger than a smartphone but still portable, where as the iPad would probably remain at home.

I think the jury is still out on Apple without Steve Jobs at the helm. Really difficult to see how they'll raise the bar with the next iPhone. Other than for photographyuse, I'm struggling to understand why the iPad 3 needs a 2560 x 1600 resolution with only a 10" screen. Puts unnecessary strain on the graphics processing and battery life, imo.

I haven't but that's not a 10" screen, and for computer use (read multi-tasking) a high resolution is much more desirable, and indeed, necessary for some applications.

A desktop machine sports a more powerful CPU & GPU and can be plugged in. For me, tablets are all about portability and battery life.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from. It's always going to be tricky when you allow devices to be rooted and offer different flavours of OS. Still, I think the Nexus 7 and Jelly Bean will be the shot in the arm the platform needs for developers to get onboard and produce content of the level of quality and choice Apple users enjoy. Here's hoping anyway - competition is always good.

Jelly Bean looks awesome, the problem is that for a long time no more than max 10% of all the Android phones/tablets out there will run it. It is such a fragmented world when it comes to OS and screen sizes it's such a problem to develop for it.

True. Hopefully, 1280 x 800 will become a default (defacto?) standard for Android developers. It's a sensible resolution to design for regardless of screen size.

Buying a Nexus *should* safeguard me from being stranded with a version of Android that no longer receives development support. If the Nexus proves to be popular and a success (and it's looking that way - v. early days I know), then that's a core customer base that developers can tap into.

If FPL think releasing the prices of 3 players is going to stop people spamming them with emails they can think again:

    Hi,

I enjoy playing the FPL game and am very much looking forward to the new season opening. I've noticed that you've started releasing player prices on your Twitter feed. While I appreciate this and recognise its a good idea to drum up some interest as well as increasing the activity on your Twitter account releasing the prices of 3 players a day does seem a bit silly when there will be, at a very rough estimate, around 500 players in the game to pick from. Is it not possible to post a link on twitter to the complete player list, say through a link to a page on the website or exporting/copying the data into a spreadsheet and uploading it via google documents?

If the game's not being released until next week it will be the second consecutive season that the release has been late relative to prior seasons (I understand that last year was due to the site being totally revamped) and releasing the player list early would no doubt appease many of the people that are addicted to the game.

    Kind regards,

Because loads of people that were not that interested in the league all of a sudden start watching crap matches because they gave (c) to one of the players.

And it is brand strengthening for the 2+ mil players that sees the logo and reads the sponsor names over and over.

Imagine the page impressions the site gets compared to premierleague.com

                Totally agree with this.

I can think of numerous people who join in the work leagues I have played and end up watching MoTD to watch their players in action.

At the risk of sounding sexist, lots of women who play along with us have often remarked in the past 'football can be quite exciting', to their surprise.

FPL is a great way to get the unaffiliated involved.

But if the price list is released people will then moan and want the real thing. I'd probably do this myself I must admit. Give an inch, take a mile. Besides I wanna wait to log in to see what surprises the new season holds. Like when everything is released together, makes the wait more juicy.

Depends how many risks you will be taking in your GW1 team and the transfers you may need to make for GW2

Pretty much, but Ramires not even mentioned, last year player's player for us. Natural for him right, Mata left and Hazard and Lamps sharing central attacking role, however, if want to play both Ramires and Hazard, Ramires may even revert to his Brazil role - ie. Mikel's position.

All in all, Mikel to play 25 games this year, not 50

Not sure you're right about Essien, shadow of former player, Mikel was favoured under RDM and excelled too. Mikel first choice by some distance and Essien filling in if Mikel injured. Mikel to play a lot of minutes this season.

nope... One of our biggest rotational spots with Essien, Meireles playing deeper and Romeu who is potentially the best of the lot, loved by AVB but likely to be brought along slowly by RDM

I include Suarez in the same breath. Hopefully lower prices. I rate Rodgers massively. If he can get Liverpool playing then I fully expect us all to forgive those at the pool who let us down last year.

and it read "suckered in by the new signings"

How about a diversion to take your mind off the long wait?

At work we have a H2H league of teams made up of ex-players of "real" teams. You are allowed to "top up" with current players if you run out of past legends!

    For example; a Man Utd version;

    Howard / Foster

    Fabio / O'Shea / Shawcross / Bardsley / Simpson

    Park / Gibson / Obertan / Pilkington / Jones

    Campbell / Morrison / Saha

Always gives our Scottish cousins something to chew on, as we'll allow International team entries too. Adds some spice to H2H Leagues during those long Winter months.

    Any suggested entries?

A bit more John Clare, to sooth our beating breasts ...

    IX.

    AN IDLE HOUR.

SAUNTERING at ease, I often love to lean
O’er old bridge walls, and mark the flood below,
Whose ripples, through the weeds of oily green,
    Like happy travelers chatter as they go;
And view the sunshine dancing on the arch,
Time keeping to the merry waves beneath.
While on the banks some drooping blossoms parch,
Thirsting for water in the day’s hot breath,
Right glad of mud-drops splashed upon their leaves,
    By cattle plunging from the steepy brink;
Each water-flower more than its share receives,
And revels to its very cups in drink:—
So in the world, some strive, and fare but ill,
While others riot, and have plenty still.

Chance creation I'm talking about, not actual assists.

Assists require a goal to be an assist.

Surely the more chances you create the higher the chance of a goal and therefore assist.

(yes I know this clearly didn't apply last season)

I understood what you meant and, yes, you would expect some correlation between chances created and assists. The fact that Baines got few assists and Downing none suggests otherwise.

Its an interesting stat but I will not be following your attempts at a Downing bandwagon!

OK, don't go linking this comment on twitter/facebook, but my friend's dad works for a major marketing firm and according to him the FPL developers were just waiting for the new online adverts to be coded into the site. Apparently that's now been completed and the site should be live from 4:30 AM GMT.

I can't say this friend is 100% reliable, but he has been right in the past (he's usually in the top ten team ID's). Only posting this now as it's just a few hours before 4:30 AM so it shouldn't make much difference, F5's at the ready- may the best man win! 😀

Cant really see him going to italy. Not sure where he would go as i dont think hed play for another prem side. I thought Madrid but was shot down when i mentioned that on here yesterday.

Only other option wd be barca..

Maybe Milan will go for Dzeko or Tevez so then City can get RVP. If i was Milan i would go and get Adebayor, absolute bargain and he's always banged on about Milan aka "Beyonce"

PSG are going to walk the title, they should just give them it now, let the arabs have a little parade or whatever. Then let the rest of the teams who dont have 5000 trillion fight it out for the proper league.

Initially it will be problematic as clubs will find loopholes and ways to exploit the rules but bit by bit Uefa will hopefully find ways to close those loopholes so that it becomes a more even playing field. Like AP said, the ridiculous money being thrown about is ruining the game.

Simplistically FFP will mean clubs can only spend what they EARN. Not what sugger daddy owners loan them.

yeah, the problem is that like the city stadium naming scenario they just sold the rights for £400million. Uefa should have dragged them over the coals for that. They should have got independant valuers in to put a market price on it and then penalised them in a non monetary way. The only problem would be that until Uefa write up some specific rules to cover most financial situations regarding club revenue streams the clubs will be able to mount legal challenges to any such penalties. Therein lies the problem, Uefa dont want to have the court cases and costs. Its a right old mess.

We rejected 46m EUR for Silva, I find it hard to believe we would then agree to sell him + Zlatan for 19m EUR more.

Knowing the BS the club puts the fans through in the transfer market there will probably be an announcement in a few days along the lines of "The deal was going ahead but Berlusconi cancelled it, he is a hero for making such a financial sacrifice and the two players can be considered as new signings."

ill give it a go, of course its not 100%

          Arsenal: RVP (by miles)
Aston Villa: Collins (not many AV players got any)
          Chelsea: Mata followed by Terry
Everton: Baines(few) early season, jelavic / pienaar later
          Fulham: Dempsey
          Liverpool: Suarez
City: was many different 1s mainly silva / aguero
Utd: Rooney (they love him) scholes and valencia picked up a few too
          Newcastle: Ba early cisse later
          Norwich: Holt / Ruddy
QPR: Cant remember any1 even getting 1 lol Cisse got maybe 1 buzsaky got 1 i think
          Stoke: Crouch
          Sunderland: Sessegnon
Swansea: shared around alot between vorm, williams, caulker, sinclair, siggy
Spurs: again shared alot: parker, modric, bale, ade got most i think
          WBA: Foster
