Scout Scribbles – Boselli Gets Amongst the Goals Again

Mauro Boselli notches again for Wigan as the Latics draw 2-2 with Bulgarian side Botev Plovdiv. Martin O’Neill awaits the results of a knee scan on Wes Brown and admits Michael Turner is in talks with Norwich over a potential move to Carrow Road, Alberto Aquilani is keen to stay at Liverpool though Brendan Rodgers has yet to decide on the Italian’s future, while Steven Taylor is set to feature for Newcastle against Olympiacos on Saturday after a seven-month absence:

Botev Plovdiv 2 Wigan 2
Roberto Martinez handed 22 of his squad some game time after Wigan played their second game in three days last night. The Latics took the lead midway through the first period after a foul on Victor Moses resulted in a free-kick on the edge of the box; James McCarthy teed up David Jones to fire home a superb opener but Plovdiv levelled prior to half-time after a mix-up in the Wigan box. Martinez made 10 changes after the break, retaining just Ali Al-Habsi in goal, and saw his side regain their advantage after a Daniel Redmond cross afforded fellow sub Mauro Boselli the chance to find the net for the second time in successive games but a fortuitous penalty award allowed the Bulgarians to pick up a draw.

Fantasy managers will no doubt be experiencing a sense of déjà vu with Boselli here; many took a punt on the Argentine at the start of the previous campaign on the back of his strong pre-season form but Martinez’s post-match praise won’t be enough to persuade those who were stung by his acquisition last time round:

We rotated the players to give as many time on the pitch and it was a very useful exercise which taught us a lot. It’s about the group at the moment but I was pleased for Mauro (Boselli). He has come back from over a year away from Wigan and integrated straight back in. He’s a goal-scorer and goal-scorers are never happy unless they score

Wigan First-half: Al Habsi, Alcaraz, Caldwell, Boyce; Mustoe, McCarthy, Jones, Beausejour; Crusat, Moses, Sammon (Di Santo 24)

Wigan Second half: Al Habsi; Stam, Golobart, Lopez; McManaman, Watson, Fyvie, Redmond; Gomez, Maloney; Boselli

In Other News…
Martin O’Neill is anxiously awaiting the results of Wes Brown’s knee scans after the centre-half limped out of Sunderland’s 3-2 win over FC Groningen last week. Any potential absence for the former United man could further deplete the Black Cats’ options in the heart of defence, after O’Neill revealed he had allowed Michael Turner to hold talks with Norwich prior to the Groningen match:

Norwich had asked us about it before Wes’ injury and so having given permission for Michael to go down there and the clubs having agreed a fee, it was just ironic that Wes got injured at the time. We will see what develops down in Norwich, but I am hoping that Wes’ injury is not as bad as it might have been. He will be assessed. He is doing some scans and I’m hoping that the news is going to be okay. But his knee is really swollen. But we do have a number of centre-halves at the football club at the moment, and priorities in strengthening are probably elsewhere.

The situation could well help Carlos Cuellar’s chances of nailing down a regular role in the Sunderland defence following a summer move from Aston Villa. Clearly, the Spaniard is a favourite of O’Neill’s – he has now been signed twice by the Irishman and, at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.8 in the Sky Sports game, has been earmarked for a role in many Fantasy squads ahead of the new season. At home, in particular, Sunderland were defensively solid after the dismissal of Steve Bruce in December last year – in 12 home games under the new boss, they returned six clean sheets and conceded just eight goals, compared to a mere two clean sheets and 21 goals against in 12 matches on the road.

Brendan Rodgers admitted he is still assessing the possibility of Alberto Aquilani staying on at Liverpool next season after the Italian featured in the club’s 2-1 defeat against Roma. Aquilani was handed a starting role as the furthest forward of the three central midfielders and produced glimpses of potential during the game – priced at 6.0 in FPL and a mere 4.4 in the Sky Sports game, he would likely pick up plenty of Fantasy investment if he can manage to force his way into Rodgers’ thinking but, when asked over his plans for 2012/13, the new Reds boss was slightly non-committal:

That remains to be seen. I need to have a close look at Alberto. It’s been difficult for him during his time in England, and this is probably the first period where he’s felt happy, according to him, and he’s working. I need to assess, and that’s what I’m doing at the moment.

Certainly, the Italian has made it clear he is keen to pick up his career on Merseyside after a disastrous three years at the club. Signed back in August 2009, he has turned out for the Reds in just 18 league games before spending the past two seasons back in his homeland on loan at Juventus and AC Milan respectively. Speaking on the situation yesterday, he revealed:

I had a very good talk with Brendan where we were able to share our thoughts and it was a very positive chat. I like his footballing philosophy and I like the mentality he has because it matches my own skills…I never asked to leave but I was always pushed by the club. I am here and I would like to play for Liverpool but it doesn’t depend only on me.

Steven Taylor is expected to make his eagerly-awaited comeback for Newcastle this weekend against Greek side Olympiacos. The centre-half has been out of action for seven months after rupturing an Achilles last December and, despite returning to pre-season training, has yet to feature due to a slight hamstring strain – Alan Pardew is expected to ease Taylor back into action on Saturday with a 45 minute appearance looking likely. Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa are both set to be afforded their first taste of pre-season action after the pair returned from extended summer breaks due to their participation in this summer’s Euro 2012 tournament with France.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

You wont get many clean sheets with those 2. See, the thing is, rotation is important yes. But I doubt Ruddy or Davis will keep CSs even when they're playing at home.

This is exactly the point I've been considering. It's all good and well picking 2 keepers that rotate really well but if they're not going to keep many clean sheets it's pointless. Spending a bit more is a better option in my opinion.

Seems there's not much value in having a rotating pair of keepers for 9m.

I think Reading could do well defensively and West Ham could be solid if Big Sam implements a style of play/philosophy similar to that he had at Bolton (I don't know if this is likely).

The important thing to note though is that for 10-10.5m you can have much better prospects of points.

    What you lot think?

    de Gea / Federici

    Clichy / Cole / Kaboul / Jenkinson / Rangel

    Toure / Kagawa / Hazard / Noble / Michu

    Torres / Adebayor / Pogrebnyak

All still assuming Adebayor goes to Tottenham. If not then I think I'm torn between a few mid priced stikers like Graham, Lambert, Vaz Te, the list goes on :-s

Will also downgrade Hazard to Ramires and Upgrade Torres to Rooney before GW3 I think.

    Thoughts?

I see no Bale love. Where did it go? I feel like I shouldn't have him on the squad anymore. Any good reason NOT to have him? I would love to hear one, because then I can bring in the Zog (thanks Brian and Bubbles for the implementation of the idea you've put in my head) and some other cool defender.

Yeah I feel like I NEED Bale, but I WANT Zog. There's not room at the inn for him at the moment, midfield is stacked. I did take out Guthrie for Britton and Lucas for Noble (which leaves me with THREE Hammers on the squad, believe it or not...), so I guess my only question now is ShawX...Do I stick? Is there a better suitor for my last defender spot that is the same price?

Getting Zog is a huge punt and could pay off if he gets a lot of gametime and is involved in the goals Villa are expected to score. He could equally fail though if he doesn't nail down a spot in the first XI.

I think Bale is on your teamsheet regardless and Zog is someone who you aim to get in (in place of a cheaper player) if it doesn't sacrifice other areas of your team.

Bale was one of the first names on my teamsheet this year, along with a Chelsea defender and Dempsey.

He could really kick on this year and has the potential to be the highest scorer this season.

Well GW 2, 4 & 6 don't look very good in terms of CS prospects, might get a few save points though but it's impossible to say.

Why not have a look at the ticker and figure out some alternatives? It's better to do your own research and then get feedback/suggestions for improvement than just asking someone else to tell you.

There's only 2 other starting 4.5m keepers so it shouldn't be too difficult 🙂

You can get a decent rotating pair for a bit extra, although I'm considering just picking one good keeper and playing him in most games with a cheap keeper to back up his bad fixtures (e.g. DdG/Federici)

It could be a blessing in disguise - there is no guarantee Ivanovic will play all 3 games in the first 2 gameweeks anyway. A Cole or Terry look better value for security.

A lot of people are forgetting about having a good overall team in fpl – it really does make a difference long term. Fair enough of you are planning to wild card straight away, but not everyone is. i really dont want a bunch of 4 mil defenders in my team who will be next to useless if required as subs due to injury/ suspention etc...

        hangleland is great value

I see your point about picking a load of useless defenders just to save money and I agree it's important to have balance.

I'm currently going for something along the lines of:

          decent 5-6m keeper + cheap backup/rotating keeper (e.g. DdG+Federici)

Nailed on 6.5-7m CHE defender + Nailed on 6-6.5m City defender (hope this exists!) + 3 4-4.5m rotating for one spot (or 2 if injury/suspension forces my hand).

This gives me good balance I think and I would argue there's no need to spend more than 4.5m on a defender when you already have 2 that your happy with player (almost) every week. Cuellar and Fabio are 2 good picks in this range and I hope more will emerge as we begin to get an idea of starting XI's towards the big KO.

fair point, its tough to build a balanced team and have the big name players in there too - the budget goes further than it did last year but still some tough choices to make.

I agree the two defenders you've named are good picks, but i've seen quite a few teams with three 4 mil defenders - that strategy is doomed to failure (imo)

I think having 4 attackers in the £5-5.5m range is a risk to be honest, especially when there are a lot of options for ~£1m extra.

Noble for sure a good pick but the rest in that range are questionable.

I haven't decided what I'm doing yet though, although Silva at 10m is a bit too much for me.

I don't know at the moment and I'm sure it will become clearer after we've seen more pre-season friendlies.

Bale/Dempsey (if at Fulham) offer much more value than Silva IMO and I'm this would give you a bit more to play with and get someone a bit better than a £5.5m midfielder.

I wouldn't worry too much about selecting your squad at this stage, it's more important to have ideas and a shortlist of players.

This could work for example but keep an eye on the City defence in terms of rotation.

There are quite a few decent pick around the 6.5m mark. McClean, Zog, Pienaar, maybe Fellaini, probably a few more than I can't think of right now.

Vertongen is an interesting pick, I really don't fancy him to start the season nailed on but rather get the odd game until he has adjusted a bit, especially given the competition for his position.

Cisse is a good pick for the first 2 weeks but I have a feeling you might regret having him in your team come GW3, especially since you will probably want to swap one (or more) of Lamps/Torres/A Cole, plus Zog is a bit of a punt!

I'll bench Cisse for Maloney GW3. Lamps is out on his ear for a ManU midfielder in GW2, and I doubt that Torres will be their come GW3 either, so GW3 won't be an issue. The red card fear is a worry, but I like it for now.

I don't see why Vert won't start, managers prefer a settled defence so I think he'll be straight in.

So currently your GW3 team is:

        Mig

Lescott McCartny Vertongen (Tierny - tot) (Cole-no fixture)

Bale Lampard's replacement Noble Maloney Zog (new)

        Torres' replacement Aguero (Cisse)

Could be fine but you're still relying on Maloney, Zog and Vertongen a) nailing down spots in the first XI and b) being in form.

Could work out for you but it would mean either playing a player with a really bad fixture or taking a hit to rectify it. Suppose it wouldn't be the end of the world but you see my point?

I could live with playing Cisse away to City for 2 pts considering that there's blank fixtures that week. Tierney is a worry, but I'm not basing my team around what happens if I need to play my 2nd sub in GW3.

In all honesty, if I've only got 3 players who are uncertain at this stage of the season I'll be pretty happy. Everyone is a risk before GW1, its impossible to avoid and it's pretty much inevitable that some hits will be required if you also want to keep your team moving. This early it doesn't bother me, and I think that there are advantages to being a bit of a sheep and making some money.

yep. although i argue if ivanovic isnt nailed on then either cough up for terry or don't bother with the chelsea defence at all. unless chelse'a defence improves dramatically from last season then 6.5 for a defender with zero goal threat like cole is madness. 1 ivanovic goal is worth 2 maybe 3 cole assists, it's a no-brainer imo.

            Disagree.

            - Chelsea were much more solid under AVB at the end of last season.
            - Chelsea have 3 favourable fixtures in the first 2 game weeks.
            - Cole has assist and bonus point potential

Ivanovic RB (£6.5m) would be the idea scenario but A Cole is still an option. Terry's added goal threat combined with his 500k extra price means that although he's a good pick, saving 500k and getting Cole would still be a good shout.

    Terry-Clichy-Cuellar-Demel-Lichaj

Personally I'd take out Terry for Cole/Ivan and save 0.5 but I understand why you want him.

Too many punts for my taste: Kagawa, Marin, Dempsey (if at Liverpool), Siggy, Pog are all at new clubs and might not settle immediately. I like the Tevez pick but only if he looks likely to get the same kind of gametime as Aguero - keeping my eye on that one.

In other words I see it as a high risk selection but that doesn't mean to say it's bad, just not to my tastes.

We ahve all seen the gossip regarding Micah Richards and a transfer. Well, I received some interesting information last night - at a dinner I was talking to a guy who is good friends with the brother of Micah Richards - apparently Richards definitely wants to leave City and is off to Real Madrid this summer.

Makes Zabaleta a good proposition at 6.0m.

Just because he wants to leave, doesn't mean he will!

Though if I were Richards I'd be off. He is wasted at City

You should sell the news instead of spreading it here. 😉

The Mcy market still has alot to do thi pre-season.

What I don't understand is............why would Real Madrid want Richards? I mean, he's a decent player, but not top class IMO (as he proved yesterday for Team GB).

He will get that. He's still young (recently turned 24) and has real potential to become a world class footballer. Not sure he's quite there yet though I agree.
