Spot the Differential – Gameweek 1

Having rolled out the Scout Picks on Friday evening, we now turn our attentions to the first Differential article of the new campaign. If you’re new to this, the idea is to highlight certain Fantasy assets with low ownership – typically under 5% – ahead of each Gameweek and wax lyrical over their chances for the fixture ahead. This term we’re concentrating on just one player per Gameweek and, to get the ball rolling, we’ve opted for a proven Premier League goalscorer…

Let’s be honest – last season was a bit of a write-off for Darren Bent. The Villa forward arrived on the back of 41 goals over his previous couple of campaigns but the installation of Alex McLeish to the Villa Park hotseat put paid to the forward’s Fantasy potential, as the midlands outfit attempted to grind out results under the former Birmingham boss. As a result, Villa returned a meagre 37 goals over 2011/12, the second lowest tally in the league and only one more than Stoke; starved of service up top, Bent managed just nine goals before his season was ended in early March due to an ankle injury.

With McLeish now nothing more than a bad memory, Villa fans approach the new season with far greater enthusiasm. New boss Paul Lambert has handed his players a license to attack as he looks to replicate the offensive threat of former club Norwich; the Canaries racked up 52 goals upon their top-flight return under the Scot, a goal haul bettered only by the top six last time round. Already, Bent has been singing the praises of the new man in charge, with a change in tactics set to alter how we assess Villa’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead:

“He wants us to be really dangerous and create loads of chances. He wants us to be an attacking outfit. He has a philosophy where he says: ‘If we’re going to lose, we’re going to lose having a go’. He wants us to have a right good go at every single team. That’s how it should be. We have attacking players in the team who can cause real damage and he’s told them to go out and do their stuff. It’s certainly going to be a dream for me playing that way as a striker.”

Villa roll up to West Ham for their Upton Park opener on the back of decent pre-season form. Lambert’s side have racked up eight goals in their final four fixtures and Bent signed off on summer duties with a smartly-taken brace against Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen – aided by the creativity of Charles N’Zogbia, Brett Holman and Stephen Ireland, he could well be set to spoil Big Sam’s party tomorrow afternoon.

Bearing in mind the Hammers managed just seven clean sheets at home in the Championship last season, Lambert’s men will be anticipating goals. With spot-kick duties in his locker, an ownership currently under 3% and a strong set of fixtures to follow, Bent looks the man most likely to produce as the Villains seek to exorcise the ghost of McLeish with a new-found sense of optimism.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

cole harte zabaleta ( barnet, damel)

    hazard nasri bale walcott (britton)

    torres(C) tevez pogrbneyak

Don't no if i should swap hazard for lampard but not sure if he will start both games as he played community shield and then midweek for england.

any help would be appreciated thanks/;.

Its a solid team with only a few things i dont like.

DDG is very much worth the 0.5 over friedal
I wouldnt pay 4.5 for a newly promoted defender in harte
Better option than Barnet and Britton
Pog is only 5.0 so will be hard to swap out. Only have 1 good fixture than it goes to pants. Will need a double trade to get to graham or petric both who have great fixtures

        I dont think he will.

Guardian squad sheets reckons he will but i think

        -----Coquelin----Arteta------

        Walcott-------Cazorla--------Gervinho

        --------------Podolski----------------

Giroud to be subbed on second half for either podolski or gervinho and take CF and pod/ger out on the wing.

I think he will play at least an hour in both. Need to get off to a good start and with marin and strurridge injured they dont have too much depth out wide. So mata might go off and Hazard take the hole but would leave a talent deficit in the LW

I would take Noble over Nolan any day.

Also Cazorla is an attacking mid and yaya is a DM (who does get forward i admit) but city have so many attacking options he may have to hang ack a bit more often like in the community shield match.

Mata or Hazard? plus I'm thinking about swapping Silva for Yaya Toure to spend the extra 2.0m elsewhere. worth the punt?

I'd definitely go for yaya over silva for the extra 2mil, and I'd go for Mata (although I'm personally steering clear of chelsea midfielders for now)

cole harte zabaleta ( barnet, damel)

    hazard nasri bale walcott (britton)

    torres(C) tevez pogrbneyak

Kind of like a final question (if there's such a thing) and an intriguing one... given the ease of both their fixtues...

    A.) Michu+Bent
    Or
    B.) Graham + N Zogbia

(assuming I have money for both combinations and B actually saves me some)

I have A but i also like B. bent is more nailed on as lambert has made him captain and tends to apply a rotation policy. on the flipside, graham has been on fire in pre-season (but michu's been good too).

Wow, almost 26% of all teams have got Shawcross in them.
That's a stark warning to totally ignore that feature of the site when trying to pick your team!

the most annoying thing is when that many people inexplicably pick someone like cabaye and then a few weeks later it gets announced that cabaye will be playing further forward for the time being. 😛

He's a very fair price, his team can be relied on at home and the sort of player that would pop up with the odd goal.
I think his ownership just goes to show most managers don't look past 1 or 2 weeks in fixtures when choosing players.

My strategy this season is to start with a fairly cheap side but nailed on players with good fixtures.
Four big hitters and 9M in the bank so I can upgrade as the form players emerge without having to play my wildcard in GW3 or 4 as I usually have to do.

Does that seem sound to you?

Why is 9M in the bank too much if you can put out a decent team in GW1?

You see lots of people who join in GW2 who are near the top because they learn from GW1 and can invest in the top players as soon as they can.

With the rotation risks this season, and the transfer window still open then investing all your budget in GW1 is a one way ticket to planet wildcard.

It does have the risk of everyone else having a jump start on you but your plan does sound like one that may over take them in the long run... It's a good idea esp if you don't want to use your wildcard early but it might be agonising adding one player each week..

Yeah. if you can afford him

If baines was a mid 7.0 would be a steal with set pieces and free kick, But as a defender he has clean sheets as well.

No to mention he dinally has a decent striker to direct his crosses to.

Baines to be highest scoring defender this season.

Which 2 to play out of Noble, N'Zogbia and Graham?

I have Noble and N'Zogbia as I think that will be a high scoring game with 2 poor defenses whereas Swansea are normally bad away and QPR good at home. Should I swap Noble/N'Zogbia for Graham iyo?
