Spot the Differential – Gameweek 1

Having rolled out the Scout Picks on Friday evening, we now turn our attentions to the first Differential article of the new campaign. If you’re new to this, the idea is to highlight certain Fantasy assets with low ownership – typically under 5% – ahead of each Gameweek and wax lyrical over their chances for the fixture ahead. This term we’re concentrating on just one player per Gameweek and, to get the ball rolling, we’ve opted for a proven Premier League goalscorer…

Let’s be honest – last season was a bit of a write-off for Darren Bent. The Villa forward arrived on the back of 41 goals over his previous couple of campaigns but the installation of Alex McLeish to the Villa Park hotseat put paid to the forward’s Fantasy potential, as the midlands outfit attempted to grind out results under the former Birmingham boss. As a result, Villa returned a meagre 37 goals over 2011/12, the second lowest tally in the league and only one more than Stoke; starved of service up top, Bent managed just nine goals before his season was ended in early March due to an ankle injury.

With McLeish now nothing more than a bad memory, Villa fans approach the new season with far greater enthusiasm. New boss Paul Lambert has handed his players a license to attack as he looks to replicate the offensive threat of former club Norwich; the Canaries racked up 52 goals upon their top-flight return under the Scot, a goal haul bettered only by the top six last time round. Already, Bent has been singing the praises of the new man in charge, with a change in tactics set to alter how we assess Villa’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead:

“He wants us to be really dangerous and create loads of chances. He wants us to be an attacking outfit. He has a philosophy where he says: ‘If we’re going to lose, we’re going to lose having a go’. He wants us to have a right good go at every single team. That’s how it should be. We have attacking players in the team who can cause real damage and he’s told them to go out and do their stuff. It’s certainly going to be a dream for me playing that way as a striker.”

Villa roll up to West Ham for their Upton Park opener on the back of decent pre-season form. Lambert’s side have racked up eight goals in their final four fixtures and Bent signed off on summer duties with a smartly-taken brace against Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen – aided by the creativity of Charles N’Zogbia, Brett Holman and Stephen Ireland, he could well be set to spoil Big Sam’s party tomorrow afternoon.

Bearing in mind the Hammers managed just seven clean sheets at home in the Championship last season, Lambert’s men will be anticipating goals. With spot-kick duties in his locker, an ownership currently under 3% and a strong set of fixtures to follow, Bent looks the man most likely to produce as the Villains seek to exorcise the ghost of McLeish with a new-found sense of optimism.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Hey guys pretty set on this squad to start the season with.

    Friedel / Green
    Cole / Hangeland / Clark / Demel / Clyne
    Lampard / Mata / Nzogbia / Maloney / Noble
    Rooney / Aguero / Graham

    1.5 in bank.

Mata or Lampard will become Bale or VDV GW 2 then Cole to Lescott GW 3.

    Thanks alot for the response.

I did some tweaks and here should be great for GW1. kicked hazard and kagawa out of my team and surprised that i could come up with this line up

    Federici ( DDG)

    ACole Lescott Harte 4.0 4.0

Noble Cazorla Lamps Toure ( Allen )

    Torres Podolski Tevez

    - Cant find another cheaper MF than Allen to swap with Noble week in week out.
    - Can suggest 2x playing defender at 4mil prices to be rotated with harte? id still play harte to partner cole and Lescott everyweek due to hi peno and setpiece though

Noble at 5.0 could be rotated with Allen,

will be playing 3 4 3 every week and that front 3 couldn have been any better.

    please advice?

      your midfield is:
three guys who will most likely play deep, one of which has awful awful fixtures (allen)
unproven (albeit supremely talented) player with crappy fixtures (cazorla)
player who's dependent pretty much entirely on set pieces and is only 90% nailed on (noble)

      this would worry me!

harte won't play much ahead of shorey.

without arteta off and podolski upfront, cazorla sure could have some advantage up there?

ill think of some1 who can replace him. anyway...

can name 2x nailed on 4.0 starter? if harte isnt nailed on as starter, who are the best 4.5 defender people have in their rmt?

Yes he does have a cannon shot but sits very deep. Better off with Noble who has set pieces until you see how gibson form is like.

yes i know that but seeing as all the in depth info they know and offer u they kind of stich u tge GW player shouts. eg

take cazorla, i know he's a talented player and will have a hand in plenty of arsenals goals over the season and could it away at man city, but he's less likely so why go through all that trouble of telling us the best early fixtures and then give us a 1 of player?

All decent experienced fantasy managers would know this, but this site is for advice and IMO that kind of puts 2 bed all the hard work they've done building up 2 the season?

We'll probably have 2 agree 2 disagree on this one!

Torres for his DGW. Defense is a bit light, but It affords me to go strong in MF.

Any body going with Steven Ireland?

Will he play in the hole or is Holman going to play there?

I think if you have 0.5 available Holman is worth it. Can play out wide and in the hole, so he's as close to nailed on as a Lambert player can get.

I've not been keeping an eye on man city defensive line-up during pre-season so could anyone let me know whether they think clichy will start.. not seeing alot of ppl which him so I'm guessing no?? Zabaleta the better choice?

Clichy and Kol will battle it out for LB, Zab has no competition atm as richards is injured.

Someone please talk me out of going with both Cazorla and Kagawa for GW1. Too much risk, too early I know, but damnit, I just can't help myself.

I swapped Tierney to BennettR. I think they were both nailed until they loaned in another LB which means Tierney may need to make way.. Both 4.0 and I didnt want to spend a transfer on a 4.0 defender just cos they're not starting anymore... If both were nailed id go Tierney tho.
