Spot the Differential – Gameweek 1

Having rolled out the Scout Picks on Friday evening, we now turn our attentions to the first Differential article of the new campaign. If you’re new to this, the idea is to highlight certain Fantasy assets with low ownership – typically under 5% – ahead of each Gameweek and wax lyrical over their chances for the fixture ahead. This term we’re concentrating on just one player per Gameweek and, to get the ball rolling, we’ve opted for a proven Premier League goalscorer…

Let’s be honest – last season was a bit of a write-off for Darren Bent. The Villa forward arrived on the back of 41 goals over his previous couple of campaigns but the installation of Alex McLeish to the Villa Park hotseat put paid to the forward’s Fantasy potential, as the midlands outfit attempted to grind out results under the former Birmingham boss. As a result, Villa returned a meagre 37 goals over 2011/12, the second lowest tally in the league and only one more than Stoke; starved of service up top, Bent managed just nine goals before his season was ended in early March due to an ankle injury.

With McLeish now nothing more than a bad memory, Villa fans approach the new season with far greater enthusiasm. New boss Paul Lambert has handed his players a license to attack as he looks to replicate the offensive threat of former club Norwich; the Canaries racked up 52 goals upon their top-flight return under the Scot, a goal haul bettered only by the top six last time round. Already, Bent has been singing the praises of the new man in charge, with a change in tactics set to alter how we assess Villa’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead:

“He wants us to be really dangerous and create loads of chances. He wants us to be an attacking outfit. He has a philosophy where he says: ‘If we’re going to lose, we’re going to lose having a go’. He wants us to have a right good go at every single team. That’s how it should be. We have attacking players in the team who can cause real damage and he’s told them to go out and do their stuff. It’s certainly going to be a dream for me playing that way as a striker.”

Villa roll up to West Ham for their Upton Park opener on the back of decent pre-season form. Lambert’s side have racked up eight goals in their final four fixtures and Bent signed off on summer duties with a smartly-taken brace against Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen – aided by the creativity of Charles N’Zogbia, Brett Holman and Stephen Ireland, he could well be set to spoil Big Sam’s party tomorrow afternoon.

Bearing in mind the Hammers managed just seven clean sheets at home in the Championship last season, Lambert’s men will be anticipating goals. With spot-kick duties in his locker, an ownership currently under 3% and a strong set of fixtures to follow, Bent looks the man most likely to produce as the Villains seek to exorcise the ghost of McLeish with a new-found sense of optimism.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

First time I've asked for feedback (was confident in myself before tonight)

    Friedel Federici
    Terry Zabaleta S.Taylor Cuellar Clyne
    Bale Nasri Larsson Pienaar Noble
    Graham Tevez Torres
    £2.5

Plan is Nasri --> Kagawa GW 2 and then Terry/Torres --> either Vidic/Rooney or Rio/Van Persie. I'll assess that situation. Good luck to all.

No point having Jenkinson if you're not going to play him this week so it has to be Hangeland. Fulham are a b*tch for conceding a solitary second half goal.

There are so many cheaper alternatives at Villa that I don't think its absolutely necessary to have Bent or N'Zogbai. Bannan, Ireland and Holman could all come away with the goods for as little as 5m. I reckon they will be the budget mids we will all be looking at in a months time.

Friedel is #1 for now (though Tottenham are looking to sign another keeper). He's a decent pick even for Newcastle (Newcastle are carrying a lot of injuries/fitness concerns - there's every chance they'll try and hold out for a 1-0 or something against Tottenham).

It's pretty good, if generic (and historically our 'generic' teams have looked like total failures once the season starts - not that it helps you decide anything now!).

And you know you're got triple (not double) Man City attack with Nasri, Aguero and Tevez, right? Should still be fine with their form, but it's a risk you should be aware of!

Sorry SSETEM, I didn't see little Sammy Nasri lurking in there. He does have such a small head, doesn't he.
Three City is gilding the lily. Maybe get an Arsenal midfielder, if you have the money.

FWIW a lot of people are going with Podolski. He seems underpriced at £8.5m now RVP has left and there are doubts about Giroud etc. fitness so he should have the central RVP role and penalties to boot.

With Sunderland and Southampton both at home in the first 4 weeks I'd consider getting some Arsenal in to your team.

See but then you lose your Swansea attack (they've also got good fixtrues to start 😀 )

You could consider Michu instead of Pienaar to keep some coverage of that Swansea attack (they signed him this summer to be 'the new Siggurdson and he scored a lot of goals in the Spanish league last year) but he hasn't played in the Premier League yet and is more expensive than Graham (who has been scoring hat tricks in pre-season).

So, yeah, ultimately you're taking a risk either way and you've just got to come to your own decision on it. All the teams you're posting now are fine really - they'll get good points - we're just talking about specifics you might need to consider.

But the bulk of your team really is fine now - just go with it!

Zabaleta should be pretty safe, Richards is out for 10 weeks apparently and even if Mancini goes 3 at the back, Zab should play on the right of the 3.

Personally, I think Zab's now in with the wood at Eastlands, He seemed to be getting favouritism over Richards towards the end of last season and Richards' subsequent long term(ish) injury leaves him out with the washing imo.

    one more time RMT

    DDG (Jussi)

    Ivanovic Lescott Hangeland Gunter Demel

    Cazorla VDV Yaya Noble Britton

    Torres (c) Aguero Petric

will do Torres->RVP/Rooney and Aguero/Tevez after DGW (depending on what Aguero and RVP do in GW1)

I’m fancying a punt on Myachi insead of Noble. Is this a good idea?
