Moving Target

Moving Target – Dimitar Berbatov

While many of the more established clubs failed to appease their fans on transfer deadline day, Martin Jol handed Fulham’s supporters plenty to cheer about with the capture of Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United. The Bulgarian moves to Craven Cottage on a two-year deal reportedly worth £5m and reunites with Jol, having previously worked under the Dutchman at Tottenham:

Having been frozen out at United, the move gives Berbatov the chance to reignite his Premier League career after a difficult previous season harvested a mere five starts for the Old Trafford club. Knocking back a possible move to Serie A, with both Fiorentina and Juventus keen, the 31-year-old revealed his relief following completion of the transfer:

As soon as I was aware of Fulham’s interest my decision to join was an easy one to make. I’m impressed with the set up here and the people have made me feel welcome. There is a close and personal feel around the club and I can’t wait to get started.

The Statistics

Berbatov’s career began in his native country where, after scoring 77 goals in 92 games for the Pirin Blagoevgrad reserves as a youth, he was snapped up by CSKA Sofia. Making his debut as an 18-year-old, his step up to top level football was seamless, with 26 goals in 49 league games over two-and-a-half seasons at the club before Bayer Leverkusen came calling midway during the 2000-01 campaign.

Berbatov spent six years with the Bundesliga outfit and, while the first half of his tenure was relatively successful with 11 goals and nine assists from 54 appearances, the latter part was outstanding – his final 100 games in Germany harvested 57 goals and 24 assists before Tottenham came calling in May 2006. The Bulgarian’s time at White Hart Lane lasted just a couple of seasons, though; striking up a partnership with Robbie Keane, he flourished under Jol first time round with 27 goals and 15 assists in 69 league games and was snapped up by United on transfer deadline day in a sensational £30m swoop.

Of his four seasons at Old Trafford, only one – the 2010-11 campaign – can be classified as a real success from a personal perspective. With 20 goals that term, Berbatov was the joint-top scorer in the top-flight, with the particular Fantasy highlight being a five-goal haul against Steve Kean’s Blackburn in November 2010. Edged towards the periphery last term, with Danny Welbeck preferred as Wayne Rooney’s regular partner, Berbatov’s fate was finally sealed this summer after the arrival of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal. His record at United stands at 48 goals and 20 assists from 108 league appearances and, with seven goals in 12 games last term, it’s clear he’s far from a finished Fantasy force.

The Prospects

Judging by Fulham’s form under Jol last term, it could well be that Berbatov’s potential is mainly restricted to home games. While the Cottagers racked up 36 goals at home in 2011-12 – only three less than Spurs and Arsenal – they were dire on their travels, scoring 12 times away from home all season. It was a situation that, to a certain extent, made Clint Dempsey a frustrating purchase, though the US international more than made up for his away blanks with goals aplenty at home.

At present, it’s too early to judge what role Berbatov will be handed for his new club. His creativity could make him the ideal foil for Mladen Petric, with the Bulgarian positioned in “the hole” behind but, with Hugo Rodallega also coming into the equation, Jol’s intentions are still unclear. The former Wigan man was handed the full 90 minutes at West Ham last weekend, while Berbatov replaced Petric at the break; the latter, of course, has already produced in his only home game this season and is far and away the most popular of the three across the Fantasy games.

Penalty duties look up for grabs, with Berbatov perhaps first in line to prosper. Last season’s number one and two, Danny Murphy and Dempsey, have now moved on and the Bulgarian’s nonchalance from the spot would certainly boost his appeal. Reasonable prices of 6.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game are also likely to tempt further – particularly at home, Jol will be relying on Berbatov to bring a spark of real quality to his attack as the Cottagers readjust to life without Dempsey and Moussa Dembele.

With five goals in their opening home fixture compared to two in two matches on the road, the Cottagers seem to have quickly settled into a repeat pattern of last season. The chance for points looks good, then, ahead of home clashes against West Brom and Villa in the next six, while away trips to (wig, sot, rdg) are as kind a run as Jol could wish for. Certainly, with Berbatov on board, it’s a schedule that Fulham won’t be approaching with any lack of confidence.

don't see why everyone rates yaya so much. yes he's a great player and yes he's been scoring recently but in all honesty he's a defensive mf and his goals will dry up soon. think hba and pienaar are both better options as they're more attacking and have better fixtures

*Box to Box midfielder. His goals so far have been very lucky. He only ever really gets forward for corners or when they are chasing games(which won't be very often).

Absolutely. I'm not sure if Yaya has ever scored twice in successive games before. Once Silva is running the show again he'll just sit back.

thank you. glad i'm not the only one seeing things this way

btw is there any chance of a scout article on dempsey and his predicted role/position and effect on the rest of the spurs team. and if he'll be on set pieces? would love to see something like that!

Would be so quick to assume that...especially if they play three in the back. He could easily be deployed pressuring the ball high up the pitch. If Nasri sits, your prediction may crumble.

I don't agree with the classification of 'defensive midfielder' he's a lot more attacking than the likes of Tiote, Lucas, etc. Berbilly's 'box to box' midfielder is nearer the mark I feel.

Also, yes, he's overperformed so far but so have Hazard, Michu, Dyer, etc. but that doesn't stop those bandwagons 😉

At least 2 weeks away...and I would probably add another week or so on that. Wenger rolled him out too fast last season and he didn´t really hit the ground solid. If he gets a late appearance versus SOT; then start worrying. But I think Jenkinson will make it harder for him to get a clean transition.

Anyone trying to convince themselves that Sagna won't come back in is clearly a Jenkinson owner. Sagna will come back in as soon as match fit - Koscielny didn't come back in because he wasn't completely match fit but I bet he'll start next game instead of Per Mert.

When Downing came on for Borini at the weekend, how did Liverpool line up? Interesting that Sterling played the full 90...this and the fact that he got 90 mins against City too suggests he's very much in favour with Rodgers. I've been impressed with what I've seen, although admitedly that's not much - anyone been to the games? Looking a decent 4.5 option potentially.

Definitely a good option at £4.5m and in favour with the manager. Most likely bench fodder if you get him but a good squad player to have.

Its more of a reflection of how thin on the ground Liverpool are in terms of quality. Sterling looks a quality prospect, but at his age to play each week is a big ask.

Morning Doos, fully agree with you, he is visibly showing all the signs of a man under pressure, the transfer window was a joke for Liverpool. Liverpool are a club in some difficulty imo, both in terms of finance, and in terms of playing staff. Rodgers would have been wise to to stay at Swansea.

Agree Doos, Wenger gave certain peopl space on the ball to allow thm to attempt hollywood, hoof-like; passes. The players lost the plot, Rodgers was just powerless to stop it. I´m pretty sure he gave them clear instructions to keep the ball on the carpet.

Yeah his age is a worry - you can see him being taken out of the firing line at some point. I almost wonder if he's being used as a kick up the backside for Downing, along with the "left-back" comments.

I'm searching for that perfect budget 5th midfielder. Jamie O'Hara when he was on loan at Pompey is the archetype: on some set pieces, mild to moderate goal threat, 90 minutes every week. Those were the days.

Problem is Downing is not good enough, and is getting worse. What you have is a first team player now coming on as an impact sub, which won't work because he hasn't the ability to have an impact.

Yeah, between him and Guthrie for that cheapie midfield spot. Went with Guthrie as he's more nailed on (assuming Rodgers isn't going to give a 17 year old 90 min every week), takes frees and is 0.1 cheaper.

So currently my Midfield looks like this:
    Hazard, Kagawa, Michu, Pienaar, Maloney
Not used my transfer this week, should I save it? I am considering getting out Kagawa for Yaya, or HBA! It really pissed me off that I got rid of both yaya and Cazorla last week! But granted I got in Michu and Maloney to raise the funds for Hazard. So now I'm stuck, I don't know if Kagawa will produce, and he is my only differential in my league. Yaya I had but so does 50% of people on the game! HBA, looks pretty solid too??

Yeah, after 3 GWs only RVP has shown himself to be the real deal (as if we didn't know that already).
Tevez has been as well, thanks in part to Aguero's injury removing the possibility of not starting/taken off regularly after 60 min.
All the rest could potentially be anomalies including Torres, Hazard, Arsenal CS, Ivan's goals, Fellaini, Michu/Dyer/Routledge/Graham, Santi, etc.

How do others feel about playing midfielders or strikers for that matter who are facing eachother that week? I've got Ben Arfa and Pienaar next week, Pienaar with the home fixture. It feels like you're bound to regret playing one of them, which makes me feel like I should bench one but it feels impossible to do so with both being such threatening attacking points scorers. Yeh used to have the same mental block but a lot of games are high scoring so if your player is gonna score it doesnt make a difference

no reason not to if they are the 2 players in your team most likely to score. its not as if by having them on the bench the other player suddenly has a better chance. you won't top score in the week but at least you'll be better than average. if you don't play your best players you'll probably be worse than average.

Dropping one because he is playing the other is rather daft if you ask me (and you do). Most often this means you will drop the 2nd best choice for the 3rd based choice.

Could HBA score vs. Everton? Yeah sure he could. Likewise with Pienaar vs. Newcastle.

This can of course very much happen. But benching one of them in advance will not affect this in any way. Unless the player in question actually comes onto FFS, sees that everyone is benching him because he's away to City, and subsequently gets his self-confidence crushed.

Well ok, let me clear this up,

My options are McClean (LIV) Barfa(eve) Pienaar(NEW) Hazard (qpr) Kagawa(WIG)

And the striker I could play over one of them is Pogrebnyak (TOT)

I kind of fancy McClean and Pog for some reason because they're home games and it makes playing Pienaar AND Barfa feel less of a good idea in my head right now.
