Moving Target

Moving Target – Dimitar Berbatov

While many of the more established clubs failed to appease their fans on transfer deadline day, Martin Jol handed Fulham’s supporters plenty to cheer about with the capture of Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United. The Bulgarian moves to Craven Cottage on a two-year deal reportedly worth £5m and reunites with Jol, having previously worked under the Dutchman at Tottenham:

Having been frozen out at United, the move gives Berbatov the chance to reignite his Premier League career after a difficult previous season harvested a mere five starts for the Old Trafford club. Knocking back a possible move to Serie A, with both Fiorentina and Juventus keen, the 31-year-old revealed his relief following completion of the transfer:

As soon as I was aware of Fulham’s interest my decision to join was an easy one to make. I’m impressed with the set up here and the people have made me feel welcome. There is a close and personal feel around the club and I can’t wait to get started.

The Statistics

Berbatov’s career began in his native country where, after scoring 77 goals in 92 games for the Pirin Blagoevgrad reserves as a youth, he was snapped up by CSKA Sofia. Making his debut as an 18-year-old, his step up to top level football was seamless, with 26 goals in 49 league games over two-and-a-half seasons at the club before Bayer Leverkusen came calling midway during the 2000-01 campaign.

Berbatov spent six years with the Bundesliga outfit and, while the first half of his tenure was relatively successful with 11 goals and nine assists from 54 appearances, the latter part was outstanding – his final 100 games in Germany harvested 57 goals and 24 assists before Tottenham came calling in May 2006. The Bulgarian’s time at White Hart Lane lasted just a couple of seasons, though; striking up a partnership with Robbie Keane, he flourished under Jol first time round with 27 goals and 15 assists in 69 league games and was snapped up by United on transfer deadline day in a sensational £30m swoop.

Of his four seasons at Old Trafford, only one – the 2010-11 campaign – can be classified as a real success from a personal perspective. With 20 goals that term, Berbatov was the joint-top scorer in the top-flight, with the particular Fantasy highlight being a five-goal haul against Steve Kean’s Blackburn in November 2010. Edged towards the periphery last term, with Danny Welbeck preferred as Wayne Rooney’s regular partner, Berbatov’s fate was finally sealed this summer after the arrival of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal. His record at United stands at 48 goals and 20 assists from 108 league appearances and, with seven goals in 12 games last term, it’s clear he’s far from a finished Fantasy force.

The Prospects

Judging by Fulham’s form under Jol last term, it could well be that Berbatov’s potential is mainly restricted to home games. While the Cottagers racked up 36 goals at home in 2011-12 – only three less than Spurs and Arsenal – they were dire on their travels, scoring 12 times away from home all season. It was a situation that, to a certain extent, made Clint Dempsey a frustrating purchase, though the US international more than made up for his away blanks with goals aplenty at home.

At present, it’s too early to judge what role Berbatov will be handed for his new club. His creativity could make him the ideal foil for Mladen Petric, with the Bulgarian positioned in “the hole” behind but, with Hugo Rodallega also coming into the equation, Jol’s intentions are still unclear. The former Wigan man was handed the full 90 minutes at West Ham last weekend, while Berbatov replaced Petric at the break; the latter, of course, has already produced in his only home game this season and is far and away the most popular of the three across the Fantasy games.

Penalty duties look up for grabs, with Berbatov perhaps first in line to prosper. Last season’s number one and two, Danny Murphy and Dempsey, have now moved on and the Bulgarian’s nonchalance from the spot would certainly boost his appeal. Reasonable prices of 6.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game are also likely to tempt further – particularly at home, Jol will be relying on Berbatov to bring a spark of real quality to his attack as the Cottagers readjust to life without Dempsey and Moussa Dembele.

With five goals in their opening home fixture compared to two in two matches on the road, the Cottagers seem to have quickly settled into a repeat pattern of last season. The chance for points looks good, then, ahead of home clashes against West Brom and Villa in the next six, while away trips to (wig, sot, rdg) are as kind a run as Jol could wish for. Certainly, with Berbatov on board, it’s a schedule that Fulham won’t be approaching with any lack of confidence.

Unfortunately, the laptop I used last year with all my fancy photo editing software has broken down... I had it for 7 years so it lasted well...

I now only have this piece of shit laptop to make do until I can buy a new one... and it certainly doesn't have the RAM capacity to run those kind of programmes...

Apologies for that... I am definitely planning to buy a new one next month when I have enough money, but I'm pretty sure that will be too late for you...

Am I insane for considering Sigurdsson on my WC?

Aside from Dembele, who looks likely to be used deep, he's the only real creative attacking mid Spurs have got. Should have a Corner/Freekick monopoly too, when he went off on the weekend Bale was taking them and frankly they were pretty poor. He's one of the best headers in the team too, so ideally he'd be in the box.

IMO, until Spurs show any sort of scoring form, all of their attacking players should be overlooked...

But if he's getting 90 mins consistently then he'd be in with a better chance...

He's not the creative player behind the striker that a 4-2-3-1 really needs.

Far more likely to be used out wide/up front, or a second striker.

This could all be changed of course if AVB makes a permanent switch to 4-4-2

Worth a punt in Sky Sports as he's reasonably priced, but too expensive in Main game until he's guaranteed 90 mins and shows some form. Remember Dempsey has to fit in somewhere too.

didn't dempsey have some/most set pieces at fulham? think it'll be between him and siggy to take them with siggy maybe getting more corners and dempsey more fk's and pens, don't you think?

I thought we were talking performance here.

If we're talking FPL terms, his best position is up front alone. Did it at Fulham a few times and picked up quite a few goals.

we are talking about performance. or at least that's what i intended the discussion to be about.

well obviously up front as an oop is where he'd do best! 😀

Sitting on the fence for two weeks. Booooorrrrinnnng.

Petric gets one more go in my team this week. Only a 5* performance will make him keep his place in my team. I'm looking at alternatives eg Lambert/Long/Vaz te(now that Carrol injury is more serious then expected)

I also need to keep an eye on Simpson/Demel/Jarvis so I have my hands full at the moment. So the Santi Slay needs to pass me for now.

Yes, plus Lambert can wait this week since his plays the inform Arsenal defence.

Santi, well i am 0.1M short of Pienaar>Santi. Most frustrating thing, ever!
Now, alternatively i have to get rid of Yaya, Michu or Hazard which i ain't gonna. That said, if Yaya rises today (8.1->8.2), i am tempted to bank the 100k, his points and move onto the Santi wagon. Thing is i don't Santi scoring considerabely more points than Yaya over the next 3 weeks. GW7 is the right time for Santi i think. Or maybe a week earlier.
Other option is an 8pt hit for Pienaar+Petric > Santi + Lambert. Again, i don't like taking hits and its not really necessary.

So, i am going to be boring and keep my hands in my pockets. Thoughts?

Hey, you have had a brilliant start to the season and a top 1k is def on the cards if you can keep it up.

I'm trying to stay calm after playing WC and having some bad luck with Jarvis(nolan) and Simpson(Saylor). Add Petric in for Graham and Jussi out into the mix and you know where I'm coming from. Less is often more in FPL, if you know what I mean. You sell a player and that week he hits form. That's why i'm not keen on selling Bale yet. I realised this morning that i'm one on only two in the top 6 in our ML that own Bale.

So, if I was you I would do nothing further this week. Pienaar is your EVE cover for their upcoming fixtures.

Yup. Keep my hands firmly in my pocket. I told you about Saylor, you just questioned me. His goal is coming very, very soon. Jarvis, is just bad luck. The faster you move on without knee-jerking, the better. I guess, the toughest test is your management after a bad GW. It can hurt you, if you make terrible decisions.

Yeah, I still think Jarvis will do well and match Nolan's pts over a season. Jarvis has been doing consistently well over the last couple of seasons, even in a shocking Wolves team last year.

Now that Carrol is out Jarvis(if fit) should slot back in. I only need him in gw 5 anyway. Well, Simpson was just bad luck and who would have expected New to concede vs Villa. I even lost money on a Newc win. I'm doubling up on Foster + ridgewell/mcauley for READ/villa/QPR

    Koscielny and Mertesacker?

I want a sub 5.5 Arsenal defender (reluctantly giving up on Vermaelen) but I can't see either of the two CBs being nailed on.

The consensus here appears that Koscielny will slot in after the international break, but with 3 cleansheets in 3 how can you be sure Wenger is ready to break the Mertesacker-Vermaelen partnership just yet?

Is Gibbs a more secure way in?

    Morning people

I see some (lots?) of people talking about only playing Berbatov at home.. why is that? Is it only because they scored bad away from home last year? To me, they look really good away from home this year.. Yes the game against West Ham was a poor result, but they still created chances.. and to score 2 against City away is not that bad.. is it?
I would be much more worried about Newcastle tbh, Barfa is a great player.. but to me they dont look very good right now...

    G'morning y'aal,

Looks like saving the WC was a good decision from a team price perspective.

All the risers are the ones most people got before the international break (Michu, RVP, Tevez, Hazard) so the only real benefit of using the WC now would be to prevent price falls.

yup, and those are all players you want to keep anyway.. so not much value to gain.. 🙂
ofc there will be some value made with a wc now, I just dont think it justifies playing a wc for only that reason..

True. The second international break looks to be a good alternative.

If RVP, Tevez and Hazard don't have big scores the week before there should be a whole bunch of alternatives topping the transfer lists (eg. Rooney, Aguero, G.Ramirez...)

agree, but I really hope I can save my wc until later, around gw 34 sounds good (for a dgw) 🙂

ok great. may draft him in for gw 5 in place of ddg if i have a spare transfer. thanks

As RVP has already gone up this week, and the maximum that he can go up in a GW is 0.3m, if i go for him, better to wait until after the internationals. Right? He will cost me an extra 0.2m to get in, but I would have to take a hit, and re-align my whole strategy so i'd be a tad upset if i got him in early and he got injured!!

Is Gorks nailed on? Or likely to lose his place to Mariappa?

      I don't understand point no. 6.

If you release a player after buying another, wouldn't that leave the manager that sold the player to you with only 14 men?

so point number 6 is saying that you can't have more than 15 players at a time. so if i go and buy baines then i have to sell a player and if i cant sell a player then i have to release one for free

Then he becomes a free agent right and available for auction later?

I like the idea. However, given the finite number of players, how many managers can you have? Presumably not more than 20?

Maybe if you want more managers you can have multiples of each player. So if there are 50 managers, have 3 of each player?

            exactly!

there would be multiple leagues of probably 10 managers. though maybe 12 or 15 but the less you have per league the better as many people on here found during the euros

and it is more of a test thing as you see until they get their system/servers set up in which case they'd be able to support a lot more managers

              Sounds Interesting.

And if you can view teams in the other leagues, would be interesting to see how that affects valuation of players. Wonder if there would be a lot of variance in player valuations between leagues.
