The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Everybody Hurts

It didn’t take long. As the template squad took shape over the international break, it has taken just one day of Gameweek 4 for it to show cracks.

The script seemed very unlikely. Robin Van Persie rested. Carlos Tevez withdrawn on the hour mark. Eden Hazard and Michu traveling home empty-handed. Santi Cazorla delivering just a single assist amongst an Emirates goal glut. Form was on their side but today’s failure of fancied “big guns” offered a rapid reminder just how fickle Fantasy fortunes can be.

To compound matters, some notable differentials stepped up. Dimitar Berbatov delivered on his full debut. Steven Fletcher scored his third goal in two games. Gervinho tempted us with a brace as the Gunners ran riot and, in the same match, Lukas Podolski notched his second in consecutive matches. We just need the likes of Gareth Bale and Nikaca Jelavic to break the shackles and we’ll have real movement; real discontent amongst the pack who threw Wildcards at the two-week break only to find the humblest of returns at the end of the rainbow.

It was inevitable that the cast would be extended, that we’d have new names to add to our watchlists and edge their way into our thinking. The failure for the early season form players will doubtless spark reaction – the pace of Berbatov’s bandwagon will be interesting and likely to be fuelled by those looking for an immediate fix to a hugely disappointing day.

Of course there should be faith that class will win through, that today’s events will be a rarity, but the timing is poor. Having procrastinated and tinkered over the break, the expectations were high and that will doubtless find knees jerking and cats kicked. For the majority, it’s been a day to forget but then perhaps we got what we deserved.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Was at the game today and it was clear Fletcher was knackered towards the end - but didn't seem to be any injury concerns. He had no pre season so no surprise to see him getting the odd few mins of rest.

Even if Saha was to be worked into the team, it wouldn't be at Fletchers expense.

I know Ba hasn't playing yet his week, but your thought appreiciated.

    A) Petric + Ba > Berb + Fletcher/Lambert
    B) Petric + Williams > Berb + cheap def under 4.7

    No hits.

Basically I need to decided who to ship out along with Petric to faciliate Berb into the team. I was thinking to do this trade for this gameweek with a 4pt hit, but I held on for another week so here I am.

Looking like the best front 3 town is Berbatov/Fletcher + RVP Tevez

The problem is, it looks like Fergie might bench RVP before a few Champions League games, IF, they face a tough game directly after it... which means he's likely to do the same in GW8 as they play in Europe and then face Chelsea away.

Sounds best. Neatly sidesteps the problem of Fulham's poor away record too, since you'll no doubt want to rest Feds on the bench more often than not. I'd say you could play Al-habsi more often than Schwarzer.

Interesting point for those considering Berbatov or Fletcher

Sunderland are not creating many chances at the minute. Fletcher has scored 3 goals but he has also had 3 shots so he has a 100% record. How long can he keep on scoring from every chance he gets? Well it's highly unlikely.

Berbatov on the other hand looks to be more influential in Fulham's play. He looked v dangerous in his 45 min appearance v W ham and should have had an assist. Again this weekend he got 2 goals but was also involved in many other chances.

My only worry with Berbatov is his ability to keep this going. New club and he wants to impress, after a couple of weeks will he go back to being lazy and go missing in games. He is the key member of the team now so maybe it might help but I worry for Berbatov especially in away games where Fulham themselves are mediocre.

Based on performances I would opt for Berbatov.

You're right about Sunderland being very miserly with chances so far. They have played very conservatively against all opposition. MON knows the limitations of the side and it's very built towards not losing. Fletcher will get a monopoly of the goalscoring chances, which is a good sign for owners. But Sunderland will struggle to score highly in games if they continue with the same style.

Berbatov looked great today but it doesn't change the fact that Fulham are a far better/more comfortable at home. Their next home game is against City too. which is a strong negative.

I'd be wary of both but they're strong candidates for the 3rd striker option for sure.

He could really thrive at Fulham, being central to everything they do, and is sure to enjoy his status there as 'the main man'. Only Fulham's dodgy away record is a concern for me; could Berbatov be just the man to lift the curse?

Whom would you get rid of first? I am open to hits.

    a) Zab - Clear rotation risk now
    b) Cuellar - Hamstring
    c) Rafael - United unlikely to get clean sheets in next few gw's
    d) Kagawa - Rotation risk
    e) Petric - Thank you Berbatov
    f) Noble - He has a fixation with scoring 3 or less.

    Petric -> Berbatov/Lambert/Fletcher
    Zabaleta -> S.Taylor/Ridgewell
    Kagawa -> McClean/B.Arfa

I am waiting on the confirmation of the extent of Cuellar's injury before I proceed...Hoping against all odds that he will be back next week.

Petric as thats the position likely to net you the most points from so you need a reliable point scorer there.

I have Cuellar but not panicking about him yet as I have 3 defs I can play next weekend (have Zab too so assume he won't play next week and will start dropping in value).

Keep Rafael. Kagawa will play next week and would probably have played today if not injured and on international duty. However, I sold him last night, but he is not your pressing concern this gw.

Noble looks like a waste of FPL space but, again, he can be benched most weeks if needs be so he is not urgent priority. But you need 3 strikers in this game that you can rely on most every week.

      A) Surely, I'd ship him out, knew he'd give problems, never had him in the first place
      B) I'd wait, even if he's out for a couple of weeks, I'll be fine.
      C) Keep.
      D) Not too sure about Kagawa, stay away I guess.
      E) You know it.
      F) Transfer him out when you don't really need to tweak any other players in the squad.

          A) Petric to Berb.
          B) Depends on the rotation of your squad
          C) Kagawa to Morrison/Pienaar/Nolan.

set up your team for next week and decide who you'd bench...as a general rule if these players are cheap don't touch them...then concentrate your transfer(s) on your expensive guys, especially expensive guys who are injured

I have 5 players I don't like but thinking it through carefully like this helped me decide what to do

Sunderland have a long run of good fixtures so I'd not touch Cuellar unless I had to or until I got news on his injury at least

Zab & Kagawa were never rotation risks...they were always and still are rotation certainties...so you're really being soft with those comments...if you replace these players you need to replace them with players who'll play more often or you'll just give yourself the same problem again

Rafael is the least of your problems...leave him in

that sounds sensible thinking to me

I'm not going for Cazorla myself until the fixtures are better...he looks a teriffic player and surely full of assists and bonus but he's a 1 goal per 5 games man and I'm not feeling that I have to have him through the tough matches

one further thought...Cazorla looks central to Arsenals plans but are they really going to play him any more games than Kagawa gets?...Kaga played in Japan last week and Man Utd have their CL fixture in midweek

if I was going to bet I'd back Cazorla to play a bit more because there's less genuine competition for his place but Kaga has the goalscoring track record in Germany to justify you picking him in the first place

you need to think who you REALLY need to transfer out and whether or not you're just knee-jerking...it can be difficult to decide

Was a heart attack of a game! When they said there was an EIGHTH goal i felt sure it had to be 4-4 but thank gawd we'd got a fifth. Plenty of goals in our team (obviously) but we seem to go out every week with zero game plan. It's pretty much exactly the opposite to the Allardyce approach!
