Watchlist

The Watchlist – Jobi McAnuff

In the search for attacking points at a bargain basement price, savvy Fantasy managers need to look for the unlikeliest of players in the most improbable of places. At first glance, perhaps, Reading’s Jobi McAnuff, the 31-year journeyman midfielder with just one international cap to his name for Jamaica, represents a ludicrous route to Fantasy football glory.

Dig deeper, however, and he emerges as not only a solid Fantasy prospect but a possible contender for bargain of the season. Those eagle-eyed Fantasy managers who have already taken a close look at the assists table will have seen that McAnuff nestles in joint third place with Juan Mata on five, just behind Eden Hazard and Carlos Tevez – despite playing for one of the Premier League’s least attacking sides.

This ability to lay on chances for others has been a hallmark of his career, spent largely in the second tier of English football. In Reading’s successful promotion season of 2011/12 he registered 12 assists as well as five goals and, over the previous six seasons, where he also played for Championship stalwarts Watford and Crystal Palace, McAnuff amassed a total of 48 assists.

Aside from his clear attacking potential, a favourable run of fixtures over the next five Gameweeks (qpr, NOR, EVE, wig, avl) have propelled the Royals winger onto our newly-updated Watchlist rankings. Price is another factor. In the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, McAnuff started at 5.5 but is now available at just 5.1, with an ownership of 1% making him a standout selection among the game’s differentials. In the Sky Sports game he is priced similarly (5.0) but only 0.3% of managers have noticed that he has now amassed 38 points, four more than Steven Pienaar and five more than Hatem Ben Arfa, who is owned by a quarter of Sky players.

With 31 points in the FPL game he is Reading’s most impressive Fantasy performer so far and has accrued the same number of points as the similarly priced Raheem Sterling, for example, though investing in McAnuff comes with a slight health warning. As shown by Tuesday’s Capital One Cup clash with Arsenal, clean sheet points are certainly unlikely for McAnuff, as Reading have conceded in every game so far this campaign. In addition, McDermott’s men have only mustered 11 goals so far, notching four on the road, meaning McAnuff’s team mates will need to step up their game if the wide man’s creative endeavours are to be further realised.

While the 7-5 home cup defeat by Arsenal last Tuesday may have felt like “a funeral” according to the Reading manager, the signs are positive that the team will improve and gather more attacking returns over their forthcoming kind run of fixtures, though. McDermott has moved away from a more cautious 4-4-1-1 in recent games, with a shift in formation to 4-4-2 in three of the last four Gameweeks producing seven goals. If Reading can pick their chins off the floor after the midweek Madejski defeat, the short-term at least looks potentially prosperous for McAnuff’s possible suitors.

The way Man U are playing I don't think they will be fine for too long. He could easily get 30+ goals in that team this season if he doesn't suffer from heavy rotation like Aguero. I've been looking for a way to get him but I'm a few 100k short so Rooney might get a run in my team.

Having seen your team we have a similar setup but you have more defence and Tevez whereas I have less defence and RVP. I really want Tevez but there is no easy way to get him in. I think many off the good players are aware then need to get RVP in ASAP

The lack off RVP means you should have a more balanced team which would provide steady points and allow us to gain ground when RVP fails to deliever. Well that was the theory but I'm not sure it'll work out too great with Man u trying to score 4 goals every game.

Only way in is Van Persie.

You have to stump up or forget it imo .

Honestly I feel RVP is as close to essential as it gets right now. Dude is leading the line of of the most potent attack in the league and can easily score 30 league goals this season. But at what cost would you bring him in? -8, -12? I would have to put my defence in hell and take a massive hit to bring him in this week and I doubt he could overturn the cost of the hit.

Thanks. Tevez out is a non - starter for me. I guess my main problem is I don't wanna cut any of my heavy hitters for him so the money will have to come from Berba and my defence(- Baines) which means the hit will be very large.

Yeah, I wouldn't really want to lose Tevez either if I had him, but if it came down to Tevez or RVP, then it's not even a contest for me.

Likely that MCY will go out of the CL pretty soon too, so I expect a bit of rotation in the league, plus MCY's fixtures get tough in a few weeks.

Anything below 5.5 is prob gonna be decent value for a 5th MF with his potential upside. The fact that he wasn't subbed off at half time when he looked like he was primed for a RC shows how much liverpool need him right now.

He is still worth it imo. I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes good enough to possibly be a 4th mid option. He is certainly a good rotation prospect and may be a bit more than just bench fodder that most of us thought when we bought him for 4.5m.

I know exactly what you mean Jinswick - he's been on my watchlist for weeks now but there's always been more important issues to deal with. Baring injuries / suspensions I'm hoping to bring him in for the WIG game in a couple of weeks. I agree with Ryan I think he's a legitimate starting option in any particular gameweek - so even as a 5th midfielder I'm happy to pay 5.3 or 5.4.

Not worth it for me already.

I checked earlier in the season, I only needed to call on my 5th midfielder once in the first 7 weeks.

Noble does just fine for me. Solid points scorer, on all set pieces so could get something any given week.

Sterling is the sort of player you'll want to play every week, but I don't think he compares too favorably amongst the mid pricers like Pienaar, Michu, Nolan or Lallana.

I missed the boat on him, and am prepared to let it sail.

I have him but dont like him.
Im seeing lots of people say van persie too expensive , but i reckon its baines that is

It gives me a defender I play week in, week out. I'd argue almost no other defender has that quality. Allows me to have 4 good rotating cheapies.

Always spraying crosses at big targets. On corners, free kicks, and penalties. They will also start getting clean sheets soon. I love him.

He plays for everton, so i dont like him. But he's on pens, free kicks, corners, and is a constant attacking thret. Better options for clean sheets but will consistently get goals and assist just from his set peices, let alone open play. Not getting rid anytime soon

I think 13million plus is more expensive than baines at atound 7.5 million. 🙂

Verm & Kompany are not worth as much as baines and in the same price band.

Look at Baines as a Midfielder, he's better than HBA, Gerrard etc.

In my book it's money well spent.

This is just some quick and dirty math. Based of last seasons numbers this statement is way off the mark.
For every mil you spent on baines = 21.95 points returned.
For every mil you spent on RVP =20.37 points returned

These value alone prove that Baines provided more bang for your buck.

I showed last season as it was a bigger sample but I'll add this seasons numbers also.
Per mil spent on Baines = 6.70 points returned
Pre mil spent on RVP = 4.77 points returned

I mean its not even close if you are talking in terms of pure value.

    Who to bench

    Pienaar Carzola Sterling Michu

(Last time i had this choice two weeks ago everyone told me to bench sterling. He scored 11 while pienaar was sent off)
I expect better advice this week !!

Im scarred still from last time i benched him.

Carzola , dosent seem right to bench him , Arsenal play better against good teams

Michu - Quite capable of scoring a goal in this one - was hoping he would get yellow today , so would miss it

Sterling - could quite easily be in the points again this week

Pienaar- Again quite capable of getting points

Life would be a lot easier if Berbatov dosent play , then they will all start

Alright, so plan is to get in RVP for a hit this week:

Berba+Santi+Foster --> RVP+ 5.3 mid + Tremmel (Play Bego every week till Jan WC)

Who do you fancy in midfield to rotate with Sterling??

    A) Maloney
    B) McAnuff

A I guess. Not really a fan of this plan if Berba is fit this week. I don't have a better one but it just looks/feels wrong to get rid of so many good players for 1 guy.

Berba's fixtures take a turn for the worse, and RVP looks set to tear it up with his run of fixtures. I dont mind ditching Berba+Foster, as Stoke look solid and can play Bego every week.

The only one that concerns me is Santi.

Yeah Berba I can get behind but Santi just has such good underline stats its super risky to cut him just as Arsenal's fixtures ease up. But at the end of the day if you reallllllllly need RVP and this is the way that doesn't the least damage to the balance of your team then go for it.

I cant understand why they played such a strong team today.

Only logical explanation is that Manager had already planned to rest Mata for the Swansea game , in favour of the champions league.
Seems unlikely though , especially as the chasers catching them up

Has totally screwed my plans tbh.........still need to get him in (whilst at a decent price), but for him then not to play, as Camzy says below, should have just done it at the start of the week to save 0.2/3

Agreed Camzy, but was waiting for last nights game before making the final call. Now I've missed the price rises and he might well sit on the bench at the weekend. Can't really afford that with issues elsewhere.....need my players to start...

Yeah sorry, not got around to linking

            Begovic - Foster
            Baines - Ivanovic - Cuellar - Demel - Jenkinson
            Bale - Michu - Pienaar - Nolan - Sterling
            RVP - Tevez - Berbatov

            Was gonna do:

            Ivanovic to Gorkss
            Nolan to Mata

But now think I might concentrate on getting rid of Jenkinson. But means Mata will be much more diffiuclt to get next week after another 0.3 rise, unless he doen't play and loads of fickle people ship him......

              Yeah ship Jenkinson.

Get someone cheap or a straight swap to Sagna.

Nolan is a solid scorer, you'd do well to hold onto him.

Yeah I agree, and he's at home to a leaky City. Just think that Mata, as you say is vital. Oh well probably just have to suck up the extra 0.3.

Jenkinson to Sagna is the obvious move but reckon no CS chance at the weekend and save no cash. Probably get someone cheap in like Cameron (or even stick with Gorkss at 3.9)?
