Spot the Differential – Gameweek 10

In a frantic Friday packed full of articles, we finally see out the day with our pre-weekend regular. As always, we roll out three overlooked alternatives ahead of tomorrow morning’s deadline for your perusal…

Antonio Valencia

Having racked up four goals and 14 assists over 2,124 minutes in the previous campaign, the United winger had proven to be a constant source of Fantasy points for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. The Red Devils’ summer acquisition of Dortmund’s Shinji Kagawa and Robin Van Persie from Arsenal shifted the spotlight away from the former Wigan man, though, and with Wayne Rooney also in the mix, Valencia has been shifted to the periphery of our Fantasy thinking.

To an extent, it’s understandable. While the likes of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale and Santi Cazorla dominate the heavyweight attention with eye-catching displays aplenty, Valencia’s highest haul has been just five points. In a campaign already hampered by ankle and foot injuries, the winger has returned to form and fitness and is again hinting at the consistency which served his Fantasy owners so well last time round – Valencia has now provided an assist in each of his last four starts and could well be set to torment Arsenal’s stand-in left-back Andre Santos in tomorrow’s lunchtime kick-off.

Priced at 8.6 in FPL and 7.9 in the Sky Sports game, Valencia has an ownership of just 2.7% in the former game and with a strong run of fixtures to follow, looks an enticing differential route into a United side that have already racked up 24 goals, more than any side so far.

Theo Walcott

A hat-trick and a trio of assists in Arsenal’s extraordinary midweek Capital One Cup comeback win at Reading highlighted Walcott’s current form. Having failed to start a single league match since Gameweek 1, he’s been something of an outcast this term but with Gervinho sidelined due to an ankle injury, tomorrow’s encounter at Old Trafford looks likely to hand him a chance to return to the Gunners first XI.

Much has been made over his desire to nail down a central role but Walcott may have to settle for a berth on the right flank, with Aaron Ramsey the man likely to make way now that Jack Wilshere is back to partner Mikel Arteta in the centre. Given the comparative form of Olivier Giroud, though, Wenger may well be tempted to shift Walcott centrally if things aren’t going his side’s way tomorrow and with a home clash against Fulham to follow, he also offers the potential for points next week, too. Priced at 8.7 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, and with an ownership of just 1.2% in FPL, many will be hoping Walcott can return to the form that harvested 169 FPL points in the season gone by.

Wes Hoolahan

There’s no question the season started poorly for the Republic of Ireland international. Paul Lambert’s departure to Villa afforded Chris Hughton the chance to take the Carrow Road reins and with the new boss undecided over his best starting XI, Hoolahan cut a peripheral figure, with a mere 14 minutes game time over Norwich’s first four league fixtures.

Since Gameweek 5, though, the playmaker has started four of the last five and has played every minute from Gameweek 7 onwards. As confidence begins to grow, a 1-0 home win over Arsenal was followed by a draw at Lambert’s new club Villa, with Hoolahan a key figure in last weekend’s match –he provided the assist for Michael Turner’s equaliser and resultantly picking up two bonus points.

Tucked in behind Grant Holt in Hughton’s now-default 4-4-1-1, his creativity is clearly crucial to the Canaries chances as Hughton looks to build on the back of the midweek Capital One Cup win over Spurs. Up against a Stoke side that have managed a single clean sheet in their five away games, and with a trip to Reading to follow next weekend, Hoolahan – coming in at 5.5 in FPL and 6.8 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of 0.3% in both games, offers a real mid-price midfield punt ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Evening gents, could i just get your opinion on my team please for this gameweek?

    Begovic
    Baines, Cameron, Ivanovic
    Pienaar, Hazard (c), Cazorla, Sterling
    Ba, RVP (v), Jelavic

    Subs; Foster: Gorkss, Mikel Demel

Captain choice sound? Torn between RVP & Hazard, had a few horrendous gameweeks recently also.

    Advice much appreciated.

With all my non-starting* doubts, I think I have to use my transfer this week. Due to having 0.0m in the bank though, unfortunately Guthrie has to stay rotting on my bench.

Thoughts on this plan? I expect most will hate it....but he rotates pretty well with Michu over his tough away games, and it also means I can do Guthrie -> Fellaini/Pienaar/HBA next week => a pretty decent bench option each week, rather than a dud Guthrie. I know he's seemed pretty fixture proof so far, but another reason is that Mata doesn't have the best upcoming few fixtures either...

    GW10: Mata -> Taarabt

    Federici*
    Baines, Hughes, Cuellar*
    Bale, Santi, Michu, Mata*
    RVP, Ba*, Berbatov

    Jaask, Clyne, McCartney, Guthrie*

A few if's in there though....

If Mata does have a hamstring issue, they normally take more than a week to recover from. In all likelihood though, RDM just wants to rest him for CL tie in midweek.

If the 2 you mention don't play (very possible), then I can't field 11 this week without making a transfer. I'm also a bit fed up of having no attacking options on the bench for those weeks when my front 7 don't start. Taarabt is a huge gamble, but if you're going to get him, now is definitely the week (REA & SOT in the next 3 games.) and it gives me a lot of flexibility for next week.

Like yiu said, Fixtures don't matter with mata that's why you brought him in the first place.

Having already being burned by taarabt I would stay clear. That said being in a similar position to you I am contemplating dumping mata for Morrison for a hit.

Southampton concede for fun away from home and I feel it could pay off short term. Risky I know.

Yeah, I could get Morrison instead of Taarabt with my plan and still afford one of the EVE mids next week for their nice trio of fixtures. Morrison's probably the safer pick, but after this week his fixtures are pretty horrible for a while.

ok so basically I have cash burning a hole in my pocket (FPL wise) so I've decided to get Huth in for Wilson. I also plan on dumping Lennon for Ramirez. But since i can essentially play Baines, Rafa and Huth every week, Brede is surplus to requirments and so can be downgraded to Gorkks/Nelsen.

The question is, do I take -4 next week to do Wilson and Lennon ➡ Huth and Ramirez then do Brede the week after, or do I do them over 3 weeks? (assuming I get no other issues of course) Wilson out is top priority

I would leave Michu mate until he actually picks up that 5th yellow, and then worry about it.

I'll put my reply here because of the blasted new page 😀

      Alright mate,

QPR clean sheet > Stoke clean sheet this GW, so would make sense there as well, plus Vorm dropping in price I don’t want to leave him festering.

Am still tempted to leave my team though and do Walker > Rafael next GW, I just feel with the Vorm transfer I will then be leaving my keepers alone for 8 GWs, and the Cesar transfers give me another 0.4 mill, what do you think?

Not getting Michu out, it's Noble who'll face the axe.

Yeah cheers got it mate 😉 I'm still really tempted by it though, and for me it's going to be a really close decision. Don't take it personally if I go against your suggestion this time round for this one haha 😉 But then you can laugh at me when I need that extra transfer I suppose 😉 Will decide at some point in the next few hours haha.

And yes that's what I meant, don't worry about getting rid (of Noble) until Michu picks up that 5th yellow. When he does, he will only miss one game, so then is the time to take out Noble to replace Michu for that GW, and the GW after Michu will be back for you.

But then the thing is, Mata's a doubt, and I'm assuming he'll not feature at all. Got the Champions League in midweek too. So Noble will come in and I'm not happy about it tbh.

I see what you're saying. Noble isn't a bad shout for a 5th midfielder though, on all pens and set pieces. But yeah, I'd do the McAnuff transfer, but not this week, save the FT?

Fulham have been excellent defensively at home this season (3 CS out of 4, only 2 conceded from City) and Newcastle have conceded 7 in 4 away games. Does this mean Sterling (NEW) is a better bet than Pienaar (ful)? Will be hard for Everton right?

I dont like posting my team as the norm, but needs must...

    Forster
    Clark, baines, muthesucker
    Bale, Cazorla, Michu, Nolan
    Rvp, tevez, Ba.

    bench. Sterling, Demel, Gunter.

1 free trade. 0.2m in bank.

Just thinking of losing Demel for a cheapo to help my def cover until I have time to re-asses.

Think I'll stick with Ba, and if no show Sterling to come in.

I may even do ZERO trades, and get 2 next time out...

Think I'm ready to go, not my strongest team for a GW ever but my transfers were made with the longer term in mind:

    Begovic,
    Baines, Cuellar, Nelsen
    Cazorla, Bale, Sterling, Ben Arfa
    Suarez, Berbatov, van Persie

    Jaaskelainen, Hughes, Maloney, Simpson

Who would you bench? Tough one with four players from the same game in there, but I plan on switching up Suarez for Ba and Ben Arfa for Mata next week.
