The ScoutCast – Episode Eighty Eight – The Manchurian

Granville may well be exotic but he’s not Manchurian, despite what the spellcheck told me a few weeks back. He’s also a happy man. Winning on all fronts, he’s dishing out “one helluva beating” to yours truly right now.

Reveling in his position of power, the Hungarian Mancunian brings me to task on my jerky knee transfers, with the regular ScoutCast favourites scattered around that particular discussion.

Get your ears around our foreign tongues via this link or stream the nonsense through the player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Was thinking about the suggestions on the last Scoutcast about an extra category for “attacking midfielders” or whatever. I think the thinking behind this was that modern football tactics are no longer as simple as midfielder / striker and this hybrid position has evolved.

However, I have come up with a better solution for FPL (I think):

    3 categories:
    GK – obvious
Defensive players – all current defenders plus defensive / deep lying midfielders
Attacking players – all current forwards plus attacking midfielders (wingers, “in the hole”, etc)

Your squad would contain 2 GKs, 5 defensive players and 8 attacking players

Your team each week would have 1 GK and a minimum of 3 of each of the other 2 categories.

    The scoring would be:
    GK: as is
Defensive: as per defender scoring now
Attacking: as per forward scoring now

    Simple!

    What do you think?

I like it but it's too simple. What about players like Arteta or Wilshire? They seem to be a bit of both attacking & defending.

would just be 8 strikers then. don't like.

do like the def mid / att midfield separation tho, as it reflects the game as it's played, and brings more players into consideration etc.

i think your idea would actually lessen the viable player pool.

Just think about the team you could have picked at the start of this season:

      Begovic
Baines / Fellaini / Yaya Toure
      RVP / Berbatov / Suarez / Ba / Tevez / Defoe / Jelavic

      Not a good idea!

I'm sorry but it's an awful suggestion.

The problem is that there aren't enough categories. You could arguably create these categories:

      Goalkeeper
      Defenders
      Defensive + Central Midfield
Attacking Midfield + Wide Forwards (Walcott, Podolski, Hazard)
      Strikers

That would be the best sort of balance in terms of point scoring.

Both of them have good fixtures this week. I can save transfers this week. But Suarez is fixture proof .he is likely to score against Wigan. Get another prise rise. Thats the problem.

Well it's tricky, I have Tevez, Berbs, Suarez. I think Ba has as good a chance as Berbs this week and I think Tevez could probably do better against Villa than Suarez against Wigan, who aren't really whipping boys any more tbh. I'm looking to get rid of Tevez too, just not this week.

No IMO. I didn't think I'd ever own Tevez. You have owned Suarez

      I think that proves something.

Look at Doos, he will not buy certain players that he doesn't like. Though he does not do poorly, he often misses out on some big points.

I see no ethical problem with picking players you don't like. Picking a player is an endorsement of their suitedness to this arbitrary points system.

Letting emotions into it is your problem.

Cheers for the help lads, the Ibuprofen I took nearly an hour ago has suddenly kicked in. I hope it lasts a few hours. Will ring the dentist tomorrow and see what she says (i.e. is it normal, and if so what can I take?) Hopefully I'm good for now and can manage my shift in the morning.

On another note, Brede has now hit 96%. But by the looks of it he's not going to fall before deadline. He's hitting about -200 NTI a day. he needs about another 2000 transfers out to hit the threshold, so he's dropping about 1% a day. Good news, means I can play him this week, save my FT and the move him on.

oh I am playing him, but he doesn't look as much of threat since he's gone up front, so I'm saying that selling him and getting one of those 2 might be better if it continues.

Having him up top may be better for Swans, but from an FPL perspective it has been a nuisance so far.

    B) Pienaar/Aguero -> Berb/Fellaini (-4)

Listening to this podcast, the big discussion point seems to be when to jump on bandwagons.

Mark bemoaning the fact he didn't jump on the Suarez and Fellaini wagons against Granville's argument to take the plunge and make the transfers.

I'm thinking that with the market this volatile, it's different to seasons past, and it actually is worthwhile to make transfers and even take hits just to get the form players in, caution be damned.

Simply put, I agree with Granville.

Getting Fellaini in last week for example. Guaranteed to go up 0.3m for sure, I stuck with Pienaar, and it's hurt me. I'm now 0.6 away from getting Fellaini, and 13 points down. Even if Fellaini hadn't done anything and gotten booked last week, it would still have been worth it, because as a long term prospect he looks a sight better than Pienaar, and you bank 0.3m regardless. It was the logical choice in this market.

Learning I guess... It might be too late this season, but certainly for next season, jumping on bandwagons early to get form players should be a priority even if it means multiple hits since you'll recoup it on value later in the season at the very least and if you do your homework right, chances are, a great form player to score big points.

Trouble is it always looks good in hindsight, when you know what happened.

But I did exactly this with Bale -> Hazard after gw3. Hazard's price went up and made me money sure, but I lost out on a ton of Bale points in gw4 and 5. So I'm still not happy I did that, even though I did make money on Hazard, and Bale's price actually stayed quite static.

It's trickier than it might seem...

I mostly agree. There have been several punts I've put out here that were disagreed with that, had I done, would have got me big points (Giroud in before last week being one). I think a measured response is best. The season I've gone for caution most of the time but would have scored more if I'd trusted myself. There is a balance but I am yet to find it.

I am keeping Ba instead of getting Suarez in for free at the mo....

I agree, pretty much the same conclusiono I came to as well. Brought in Fellaini this week (before this week's rises) to make sure I had him. I had been waiting patiently for Pienaar to deliver but watching Fellaini be a constant goal threat has made me give in and get him at all costs. Took a hit to do it but Fellaini is going to be a season keeper as long as he's fit.

You have to forget about the money and bring in the players that offer you the most goal threat.
      Everything else is a distraction.
Fellaini for Pienaar is a no brainer, even now Fellaini costs .7 more he's only 7.6m - peanuts for a midfielder playing as well as he is...

My philosophy is simple. I will jump on band wagons if I think the player may well be a good long term option, not for short term gains that I don't really want long term

Ivanovic, Suarez, Drenthe (last year) no.

I'd include Suarez in as a long term option.

He's always offered a big threat up front, and it was just a matter of time before all those shots got converted to goals.

Really liked him last season even though he disappointed, always saw the potential. Odd that it's taken him so long to finally start producing week in, week out.

Service has improved giving him better chances and more goals (despite a galaxy of missed chances), IMO. The interplay in the front three is much better than the somewhat agricultural tactics under Dalglish slinging the ball in. He certainly didn't have Sterling to assist and create space for him last year. I think he has more space than ever and players to supply him, basically. That said his scoring was not actually that bad last year.

It will not happen IMO. They may have shaken hands, but I'm not convinced Evra would want to play with him every week, and Evra is one of the most senior players at the club.

Secondly I'm not sure fergie thinks he needs him, given the way he has spoken about the RvP, Rooney, Chica and Welbeck strikeforce, plus we have Henriquez and Keane coming through.

I may be wrong of course. If he did say it, I want some sort of apology, as it is he continues to make out like he was the victim, and whilst this is the case i can't see it.

    Foster Bego

    Baines Rafael Demel Davies Cuellar

    Mata Bale Taarabt Nolan Michu

    Ba RvP Berba

2 Frees, 0.1 in the bank.

    Thinking of

    Foster ---- Gazzaniga
    &
    Nolan ---- Fellaini

    Sound decent enough?

Do not get Gazziniga, I doubt he will start, now Boruc is available again and after the mistake he made at the weekend. If you want another keeper, can you afford Ruddy?

I was wondering about this. Just wanted a cheap filler really, would need to be 4.0 or nothing. Can't afford Ruddy & Fellaini, no 🙁

Look at the terrible state of the Man United midfielders. Desparately wanna get rid of Hazard, have 2 free transfers, but nobody in Man United worth getting. Valencia would be a major disappointment, so staying away from him.

I really don't get the Valencia love on here atm. It smacks of the idea of 'cover' a mistake I made with Lennon.

I watch United every week pretty much. Right now Valencia is not playing the way he was last season. last season it was all about beating a man and whipping the ball in. This returned solid, if unspectacular returns each week. But atm, he is either cutting inside or he's checking his run and giving the defender a chance to recover (when he's not being double or triple teamed). Until he gets back to doing what he does best he will not deliver the returns we got from him last year

I can't agree more. He's been crap. RVP & Rafa is enough for me at the mo. I would consider Kags when fit.

        I agree.

Valencia if he didn't play for ManUtd wouldn't show up on anyone's radar. They're picking him to get coverage for their nice fixtures.

Too costly for what he offers considering the value of Fellaini and Nolan.

I own Berb and Suarez so obviously they are my preferred pair, but I wouldn't take a hit on that move this week. All four have a good chance of doing well this week

neither... Adam is tha man! Have You seen Stoke's fixtures? Easy money, betting on Adam to score. With that left foot, the setpiecestaker will rock You're world! Fellaini - who are you! He is done! Send him to the moon, and he might not grow so much hair...

The most secure way to ensure points is to cap Adam the next 4 games. Freekics, his passes, his intelligence equals points! Many points!

The only thing missing in this years fantasy is a norwegian dude, now playing in Reading. His name is Engen (in English, translated to Engine) The capasity this dude has, the technique and pace this boy has is unreal. Messi - who are you! OK, his not that good, but he should be a part of reading's squad in this years fantays pl. Believe me - next years star - Engen. Mark my word....
