The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Wednesday

Rafa’s weakened lineup get turned over by Harry’s boys as Shaun Wright-Phillips returns to haunt the Stamford Bridge regulars. There’s no such shock at Anfield as Luis Suarez fills his boots again, whilst Leighton Baines’ wonder strike inspires an Everton win at St James’ Park…

On the Up

Luis Suarez
Seemingly everpresent in this article in over recent Gameweeks, Suarez once again delivered the goods for Liverpool, chipping in with his fourth and fifth goals in the last four league matches, whilst providing the assist for Raheem Sterling’s opener. Scoring back-to-back braces for the first time in his Liverpool career, his stock remain buoyant, his ownership and price on the climb. While Suarez has United and Arsenal in the next three, his form is so strong, that’s unlikely to be a factor that will perturb investors.

Steven Gerrard
The skipper goes on delivering: his pair of assists tonight means that Gerrard has now returned in his last six outings. Slowly but surely, Fantasy managers are waking up to his consistency – Gerrard’s ownership is steadily on the rise and his price has climbed to 9.4. Suarez, for just 0.9 more, remains the stronger option by some margin, however.

Raheem Sterling
The 18-year-old operates in a different price bracket to the Liverpool heavy-hitters and, with his opening goal tonight, he delivered his first strike since Gameweek 8. Before this evening’s game, Sterling had just a single assist in his last nine league appearances – form that was beginning to call his value, even at 5.6, into question. They’ll be no such doubts for a while, despite the arrival of Daniel Sturridge.

The Liverpool Defence
A third clean sheet in four games brought Brendan Rodgers’ defence to the fore and with Andre Wisdom back in the side, Fantasy managers will certainly be taking note. The young full-back would surely only be a short-term option with Jose Enrique sidelined and with United and Arsenal to come, the “wisdom” of such a move seems limited.

Leighton Baines
A stunning thirty-yard free-kick brought Baines’ owners their first major returns since Gameweek 5. Before tonight, the Everton left-back had delivered just two assists in 13 league outings. While the clean sheet was again off the menu, Baines’ strike offered a timely reminder of his qualities ahead of a Gameweek 22 home meeting with Swansea.

Marouane Felliani
There was talk before the game that the Belgian could be dropped back to a deeper role with Darron Gibson sidelined but, with David Moyes drafting in Phil Neville and dropping Victor Anichebe, it’s clear that Fellaini is set for the long-haul in an advanced role. He hardly dazzled but his physical presence played its part, earning the free-kick which was converted by Baines to give Felliani immediate assist returns.

Papiss Cisse
While Demba Ba negotiates his way out of St James’ Park, Cisse is trying to reinstate himself as Newcastle’s hitman. His opening strike tonight was his second in three matches and, with Alan Pardew suggesting prior to the match that Cisse will eventually lead the attack back in a central role, he is gradually coming in from the cold as a Fantasy option.

The QPR Defence
Nobody would have backed the R’s defence for a shutout at Stamford Bridge having witnessed Luis Suarez tear them apart last time out. Rafa’s teamsheet may have played its part in helping Harry Redknapp motivate his side and that factor shouldn’t be underestimated. While Harry will surely bring in plenty of new blood, the likes of Ryan Nelsen may remain a mainstay and could provide strong value if Redknapp can go on inspiring similar performances.

Going Down

Rafa Benitez
It would be harsh to dent the stock of the players involved when it’s Rafa’s rotation policy that is to blame. Tonight’s decision to rest all three of the players who supported Fernando Torres at Goodison came as a shock – it’s the first time Chelsea have started a league game this season without both Eden Hazard or Juan Mata. With Ashley Cole also preserved, it’s become clear that nobody is safe from an occasional rest. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised, but that fails to sweeten the pill and introduces an unwelcome variable when considering Chelsea assets. You have to wonder, however, having suffered a shock defeat, whether Rafa will think again when it comes to underestimating opponents with his team selection.

Fernando Torres
The Spaniard survived Rafa’s rotation cull to lead the attack but drew a blank for the third successive league outing. With Demba Ba in talks and Benitez hinting that a rest for Torres is in his plans, those still clinging to El Nino will surely be fidgeting and considering their options.

Demba Ba
His absence from Newcatle’s lineup came as an immediate blow to his Fantasy owners – his pending move to Chelsea may dent his stock further. Having witnessed Rafa’s rotation policy at work tonight, few will relish the prospects of Ba being part of that, regardless of the prospect of improved service.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It does look good, but will you be able to get away with it when everyone is getting Chelsea, City and United clean sheets every week? This is assuming that they do tighten up of course.

Don't waste it for 3 transfers. IMO you don't need Hughes (after next GW) and Clyne and Defoe. And Harte should be rotated with Shorey, when he gets well.

Alreet lads. Its all doom and gloom on the toon message boards these days. We really are a fickle bunch. I thought we did ok last night and could easily have got at least a draw out of the game. The less said about santon's failure to set dave up for a tap in the better!! We have had a ridiculously difficult run of fixtures, with half of our team missing. We now start on a nice run of fixtures, and should have some of our players (saylor and cabeye) back for the next game, along with a couple of new signings. While we've had the injuries, some of the squad have stepped up and proved decent options (marveaux, anita, obertan). Also, while Ba has scored most of our goals this season, his attitude has had a negative affect on the team, and made us play cisse out of position, upsetting the balance to the team. Now (if) he has gone, hopefully dave can get back to what he does best. I am still looking up towards the uefa spots, while most other toon fans look over their shoulders at relegation. Where do you guys stand?

You've lost 9 games in 11 or something, you're going down if that form continues...and you've just lost your best striker who has kept you afloat so far. I'd be worried.

In those 9 games, we have been missing pretty much our entire first choice midfield, as well as saylor. Saylor and Cabeye should be back for norwich, with barfa not far behind.

We've been rubbish, but there is nothing that worries be about the teams below us or immediately above us

is steven taylor back?last season your defense is immense, one of the most consistent in the league..i believe that great team is build from the back, so at least a new centre back is highly desired

Currently? Next to the refrigerator, wondering what beer to drink next. Seriously, though, I think that the loss of Ba will hurt, no matter how you look at it, but the "half-full" in me says that Dave will flourish when moved into middle and that the rest of the season will have to be better, just because of returns from injury and because of maturation of new players. Chemistry factor always unknown, but probably a bit overrated. Squabbling teams can still win because most players are professionals and want to win. Squabbling teams that are losing point the finger at "chemistry".

Honestly, I think aiming for somewhere in the middle of relegation and Europa places is realistic. You've had an awful last couple of months, as anyone with such injuries to key players would have. You surely must improve with some solidarity in your side now.

Unfortunately, as hard as it might be, this season might just be a write off. But once you get to the end of the season, if you find some form with Cisse scoring, HBA back playing good football and a few clean sheets, no reason not to be optimistic again.

That's the thing, even though Ba is going, you already have his replacement out on the wing.

1st thing, the same team gave us beautiful competition in premiere league, so no question of quality.
Clearly the BA incident was doing crazy within the dressing room. Now that he is gone, i think newcastle will do a lot better.
Secondly your defense has shattered. Totally.
With Debuchy, it will add some flair.
Now that Barfa, and cabaye (the anchor man i must say) and you have found the Gem of a player in Marvaeux, you are in for a business for the 2nd half.
Lastly, untill the current owner leaves, doing all the harms to the club, Newcastle will suffer from time to time.

      Sorry for the spam 🙁

Cheers for the replies. I think that at this stage, i would take a top half finish and a good run in the FA cup, but everton were in a similar position this time last year, and almost ended up qualifying for europa, so its not beyond the realms of possibility.

I hope and pray that ashley realizes that he has gambled and lost. He gambled that we would avoid many major injuries, as our first 11 is a match for anybody, and that our youngsters could step up and fill in to cover when needed. That has proved to be a grave error of judgement. No team should have to cope with mike williamson playing 90% of games!! He must now see that without proper investment in at least a quality centre back and replacement for ba (as well as debuchy), we could be relegated, which would end up costing him millions!

Toon will not be relegated!!! Do not worry CM.

I never understood why they bought Dave in the first place last January. Would have thought they would have opted for a speedy winger and stuck with Ba.

Guys, I have a problem ..... I kinda bought Carlton Cole last week *ashamed face*

I have 4.9 in the bank, so should I keep him and do Sterling > Caz next GW, or upgrade him to perhaps Podolski?

C Cole: has a dgw coming up so you may as well hang on. It's not a great dgw and only Wal+Caz are needed imo.

It is funnier because Carrol might be back for a DGW.
I'm not sure about Poldi, he doesn't get full minutes. I say keep him.

    Torres -> Suarez (free transfer)?

Leaves me without Chelsea coverage against Stoke, but it's the best way to get Suarez in.. He does play against us but I think he will score
