Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 22

The line can finally be drawn under double Gameweek 22 after last night’s events at the Bridge. Chelsea and Southampton both occupy our thoughts here, as we look at the Saints’ main man up top in addition to the value offered throughout their side, while the uncertainty over Chelsea’s lone striker situation continues to plague us.

The Player

A double Gameweek 22 was an obvious selling point prior to last Saturday’s deadline but Rickie Lambert’s displays across the course of the campaign have more than merited our consideration before now. Goals in each of the Saints’ pair of fixtures merely cemented his position as the top value outfield player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game this season and propelled Lambert into fifth position in the forward standings on 109 points. What’s remarkable is that in spite of his 10 goals, four assists and 16 bonus points, Lambert has never really been afforded a bandwagon of his own – starting at a lowly 6.0, he’s risen just 0.4 in price so far.

As Adkins’ side go from strength to strength, their reliance on Lambert is becoming more obvious as the Gameweeks go by – he has played a part in seven of their 10 strikes from Gameweek 14 onwards, courtesy of five goals and a pair of assists. Although he dropped to the bench for only the third time last night, Adkins revealed this was part of a pre-match plan as he looked to bring Lambert on later in the game – his tactics proven spot on as the hitman notched within three minutes of his introduction. Indeed, Lambert has now scored in two of his three sub appearances, demonstrating his ability to produce within a limited time frame.

Last night’s goal at the Bridge means Lambert has now registered goals against each of the top three this term; highlighting his fixture-proof appeal as Adkins’ side prepare to face both Manchester clubs in the next four Gameweeks. With a home game against Everton and a trip to Wigan also on his short-term agenda, Lambert’s scoring form – aided by spot-kick duties and a share of set-pieces – is making a persuasive case for his inclusion in our squads. While many Fantasy managers are looking at five man midfields comprising the likes of Michu and Marouane Fellaini, Lambert’s stats may sway many back to a 3-4-3; not only has be outscored Fellaini over the season by three points, he has now registered six points more than the Swansea star from Gameweek 3 onwards. Food for thought, perhaps, for those looking for ways to save budget with their winter wildcards.

The Team

With 28 goals conceded in their opening 10 league fixtures, Southampton’s return to the top-flight earned them the tag of early-season whipping boys as Nigel Adkins’ side struggled to acclimatise to the lofty heights of the Premier League. Since Jack Cork’s midfield return from injury in Gameweek 11, the defensive turnaround has been remarkable, however, with just 12 goals conceded in the subsequent 12 fixtures highlighting their increased resolve.

Many Fantasy managers have perhaps been deterred from investing in Adkins’ backline due to those first few results but, with their 4-2-3-1 system finally clicking, the full-backs have been afforded plenty opportunity to bomb forward and lend weight to the attacks. Nathaniel Clyne’s assist last night was his third in 10 appearances and with three clean sheets also thrown in for good measure over that period, his 4.0 price tag looks strong value, given his propensity to pick up points at both ends of the pitch.

The extra resilience hasn’t been detrimental to their attacking endeavours, either – 14 goals in the first 10 have been followed by 16 in the next 12. While Lambert has benefitted more than most, Jason Puncheon’s cut-price appeal came to the fore once again last night as the winger continues to prove just why he’s a popular cheap midfielder around these parts. Having started all but one game since Gameweek 7, his consistency of game time has proven crucial to his appeal and with attacking returns produced against the likes of United, Arsenal and Chelsea so far this term, he’s demonstrated his fixture-proof appeal within Adkins’ improving side.

Despite the loss of influential skipper Adam Lallana to a knee injury in Gameweek 16, the Saints have regrouped and have lost just once in the subsequent six, with Gaston Ramirez and Jay Rodrigues also chipping in with key contributions. Clyne, Puncheon and Lambert remain the most likely protagonists, however, and while the clashes with City and United are less than enticing, those Fantasy managers who loaded up on Saints coverage for the double may now think twice over offloading any of the trio given their flourishing form.

The Talking Point

Demba Ba’s owners sighed with relief last night when the line-ups arrived from Stamford Bridge. Rafa Benitez’s obsession with rotation had many anticipating a drop to the bench for the former Newcastle man but his inclusion in the starting XI afforded Ba the chance to notch once again – it’s three goals in four appearances in all competitions now since he arrived from St James’ Park earlier this month.

Indeed, Ba has now been omitted only once from the first XI over that quartet of fixtures – problems with his hamstring and knee forced him out of the Capital One Cup clash with Swansea, as Fernando Torres lead the line despite suffering from a stomach bug. Handed just 32 minutes over the double Gameweek, Torres seems to have dropped down the pecking order as Benitez looks to the in-form Ba to grab the goals but Rafa’s admission earlier in the week that he will “manage” Ba’s long-term knee condition remains an issue for the Senegal striker’s Fantasy owners.

There’s two ways to look at Ba’s likely chance of a start at home to Arsenal on Sunday. The first suggests that his form, allied with the fact that the clash is not until Sunday, should give Benitez plenty time to rest him for the Gunners game – the other school of thought suggests that the interim-manager may reckon Torres is far fresher, given their recent respective game times.

The very fact that this quandary exists, however, highlights our Fantasy frustration. Ba, clearly, is the form player and has been one of the most consistent Fantasy assets this season – up to third in the FPL forward standings, he’s more than capable of producing the goods in any given Gameweek but it seems there will always be a risk with Benitez at the helm.

With Roberto Mancini’s tinkering up front also an issue over at City, many may decide it’s just not worth the hassle or risk investing in Chelsea’s attack; with alternatives such as Robin Van Persie and Luis Suarez nailed-on options by comparison, leaving ourselves at the mercy of Benitez’s rotational whims is a risky business. Granted, the pay-off could be substantial if Ba continues to stave off Torres’ threat but that weekly wait for the teamsheets can only lead to nervous dispositions – hardly conducive to our Fantasy planning as the season starts to heat up.

Suarez admitted to diving against Stoke, Rodgers is seething.

And no, he shouldn't be benched. Rodgers would be a petty fool to bench his best player because of this. He may well get fined or punished in another way, but Liverpool need the points so they will not bench their top goal scorer as punishment.

I've been chopping and changing a lot on my WC. Twice I've posted a revised team on here, and twice both sets of replies have contradicted themselves 😀 . One said, good team, but Pogrebnyak is a waste of time. And the other said my defence was to pricey, (this came after being told to upgrade it a bit and bring Sagna in) Before the WC my defence was low price, so I can go top heavy.

So after MORE chopping and changing:

    Boruc - Cesar
    Clyne - Davies - Demel - Wilson - Zabaleta
    Michu - Walcott - Mata - Bale - Fellaini
van Persie - Podolski - Sturridge

    £0.4 in the bank.

After the DGW, depending on how Walcott and Podolski both do, I'm looking at downgrading Walcott (I'm looking at Lampard or Taarabt) and then upgrading Podolski (I want Tevez). So ignore the "power 5".

    Any more advice?

Do not like your goalkeepers at all.

Wilson is apparently a fair bit away from a return - he stated he is aiming for a return for an international match on March 22, so the chatter that he is only weeks away sounds like it is untrue. I would be wary of getting him in now.

      Clyne > Shaw (new Bale!).

Not sure why you would want Tevez. Aguero is the favoured striker, and Tevez will compete for game time with the in form Dzeko. I would much prefer Aguero > Ba > Tevez personally. Podolski isn't really a top shout for me, due to his lack of gametime (he regularly gets 60 minutes or less). RVP - Aguero - Sturridge would be the preferable front three for me, if you could downgrade elsewhere to afford it (I would seriously consider getting Begovic or Mignolet and a 3.9m keeper and play one every week).

      Hope my musings proved helpful!

Note if I went RVP - Aguero - Sturridge I would downgrade Walcott (Arsenal are so inconsistent) to someone else, perhaps Puncheon. Then you could perhaps afford to upgrade Sturridge to Suarez? Not sure.

I took Begovic out for Cesar. I won't be getting him back as I like the look of QPR at the back in the last few games, and at 4.9 even if QPR do concede, he does make A LOT of saves. My other goalkeeper before the wildcard was McCarthy, who had been out injured for ages. Boruc and Cesar rotate well, but one thing I am wary of is that Southampton rotate their keepers a lot, but he has kept the goal for the last 3 games and looked alright, Southamptons defence has improved. The only other keeper I'll bring in for Boruc is Foster, but that means £0.6 to do that. Foster is £5.0.

Boruc is a truly terrible keeper as well, certain he has the lowest shots to save ratio in the league currently. Add to that he is a rotation risk. If you are that set with Cesar, I would be tempted just to bung a 3.9m in there. Would you ever play Boruc?

This is totally true. Puncheon for one of your midfielders would give you a decent benchable option and give you the cash to get Aguero instead Tevez.

I took Puncheon out for Fellaini.

Your telling me to get players I've already had at a low price, I've sold them and made some money, why would I get back those same players at a higher price?

I took Suarez out for Sturridge. It would make ZERO sense to get Suarez back at 10.5, when I bought him at 9.5.

Why ask for advice and then turn round and say "your advice is terrible, I have made up my mind already". What do you want? Confirmation that you have made excellent decisions? Okay then.

Congratulations! That is the single best team I have ever seen in my life! I predict 150+ points this gameweek! You are possibly the best fantasy manager I have ever seen!

Obviously you dont know my previous team, I understand that. And I appreciate the advice today, as it seems less contradiction. I was advised yesterday to change everything I'd been told to change previously.

Obviously not everyone can be happy and at the end of the day, its your team, I was looking at a keeper for 3.9 and just playing Cesar everyweek. That will open up more £, I did have McCarthy, is he likely to be back from injury soon? He was and still is at 4.0 and he was playing before the injury.

Not true. Just because you sold a player doesn't mean you shouldn't get him back at the higher price if you think he'll continue to score points. That's just stubbornness personified.

      Denial

When learning of a major injury sustained by a player in an "actual" game, owners often pretend that the injury did not happen. They suspect that the media is misleading them or that the injury was sustained by a look-alike or a decoy.

It's really a tough one. I bought Ba very early and cheap and he's done me proud but with this rotation risk it will inevitably lead to unwanted stress every week. But to have got a striker that good who now plays for Chelsea at under 8m seems like such a massive bargain. And I don't see his rate slowing down with that midfield now behind him. It would be ideal to give it a few weeks and monitor it but if he does start to look nailed on and continues scoring, his ownership and the cost to get him back could do you a lot of harm. Hmmm

For me that's the biggest risk. I haven't got doubts about him starting against the big clubs but the games you really want him to start in? Too risky. Mata is enough imo.

I am having a very similar dilemma. In TFF I have 11/30 season transfers remaining. I could afford Ba > Aguero (or any other striker in fact) to have a front line of RVP - Suarez - Aguero. However I feel that Ba can score a shedload, but only if he can play every week. And last night proved Chelsea's current inconsistency. What to do! I also see Aguero (and Manchester City as a whole) going on a great run early this year to try and catch United.

Got to think of it as having one of the only two strikers at an attacking club like Chelsea. Even if he doesn't start, he only needs 10 minutes to score.

Dare I say it - season keeper?

    Two questions for upcoming DGW:

    1. Podolski or Giroud for Berba ?

    2. Stick with Maloney (SUN) or transfer him out to get Noble (QPR, ars) ?

I'm still with Jan WC in my pocket, so I'll be wildcarding just after this GW.

I'm trying to work on my Stoke + Sunderland defense.

I can do Mignolet + Cameron + Nelsen (QPR rotates well with my other defenders) but somehow I prefer having the pricier Begovic (who I got at cheap) + Cameron + O'Shea. Which means I might double up on Stoke defense on some games.

Don't know why since I'm sticking with just 1 keeper, Begovic seems to be more reliable compared to Mignolet despite whatever fixture and form.

    Agree / disagree?

Cameron is of course interchangeable with Wilson when he's fit. Same with O'Shea and Cuellar (and to some extent, Mangane).

Is Nelsen sticking around? I'm personally looking at ditching Begovic for Mignolet on my WC, Sunderland's fixtures are excellent and they've looked more solid than Stoke the last few weeks.

Yeah heard that Toronto doesn't need him until the new season. Or if something comes up I can switch him to Onuoha.

To be fair Stoke was up against Chelsea and City and had 2 main players missing from defense against Southampton.

The main reasoning I 'want' to have Begovic (+O Shea/Kader/Cuellar) instead of Mignolet (+Cameron/Wilson) is that Stoke is a kind of team that you want to have in your defense every game.

But I don't know maybe it's just because of my obsession with Stoke defense. 😀

    Jussi
    O'Brien/Sagna/Clyne
    Bale/Walcott/Silva/Fellaini
    RVP/Ba/Berba

    Subs: Begovic/Puncheon/Wilkinson/Cuellar

    2.2 in the bank.
