Watchlist

The Watchlist – Ian Harte

When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

Don't let people put you off the RVP/ Rooney combo. Stick to your guns. That team is great, I love it.

The only thing it lacks is Everton for their next 2 fixtures.

RSC, posted a team for you on the last page. If you don't want the template, here is an alternative.

Seen your response. Still fairly generic, to be honest 😀 Triple RDG defense to be able to afford a template front 7, you can do better than that 😀

Yeah, I am considering this, but a bit unsure of Dzeko's prospects with Kun back to fitness. Something tells me Tevez and Kun will be the preferred duo as City chase the league.

I think the Baines/ Fellaini combo will be dynamite for the next 2 GWs.
I would save to be honest. Podolski -> Dzeko (if he's confirmed starter before the deadline).
But keeping 2 FTs looks your best bet

I'd stick with Pog. Good form and nailed on. Isn't he also cheaper? Your third striker will never play in a 3-5-2 anyway, so you might as well go with someone that you wouldn't have to transfer out at a later stage.

Just stick with Michu and Davies and that's enough Swansea cover. Routledge and De Guzman will fairly often start off on the bench. The signing of Lamah will only just increase competition for places.

You could generate quite a bit of dosh from changing your defenders. Do Bassong to Harte, Luiz to Zabaleta, Cameron to Davies, Fonte to Clyne and Olsson to a 4ish cheapie and you'll have generated about 3.5M to get in Michu for Sidwell and your defence would actually be better than before as well.

Capoue is fantastic. One of the best defensive midfielders in the world, if not the best right now. It would be a shame to see him go to QPR, but then again, Toulouse's not a giant either.

Belhanda had a great last season, but not so good now. Still may be a future great, maybe not.

Belhanda is a very good attacking midfielder; along with Giroud and Mbiwa, they were the key components of Montpellier's title run last season.

Great at set-pieces and very creative; I consider him a stronger version of Cabaye. Started his career as a DM, now a full-fledged CAM.

In addition, Zidane loves Belhanda. Zizou has stated multiple times in the past that Belhanda is the best player in Ligue 1.

Lost his hype this season because Montpellier have been absolute garbage in the league.

      Who's looking to buy him?

As stated above when CL starts DeGea will be rotated and when Wilson returns in 2 weeks Wilks will be dropped but I suppose u can also just transfer him in and make cash 🙂 but I'd be weary of DDG with CL coming back

Maybe Rooney-> Aguero and Dzeko-> Sturridge to have some spare cash and get Silva for city coverage? Either way the team looks strong. Are you on a wildcard?

I'm considering going without Michu and Fellaini whilst also having both Federici and Harte on my WC team. Can this possibly have a happy ending?

Try to have at least one of them. For peace of mind.

I keep thinking about going without michu and fellaini, as I currently have neither, and they are not so cheap anymore. I think I will probably bottle it when I do my final draft though. 8.4m for the top scoring midfielder is still very good value!

Both Michu and Fellaini look like great value but i currently have Bale, Mata & Walcott with two rotating cheapies

WC on the final week, will face same decisions.Happy with Baines as Everton coverage, so will ignore Fellaini for now. Michu I am going to keep, have him from the beginning, so getting him back would be far too costly.

Horrible part of the season for star players. The likes of Rooney and RVP could find themselves playing alot less minutes in the EPL now ECL heats up.

There was some useful insight into QPR's targets from the french league above. Any chance of something similar on newcastle's new signings? I don't really know too much about debuchy, yanga mbwiwa, sissokho, haidara and goufrann other than the basics that have been in the papers over the last week, and youtube videos! Are they any good?

Debuchy is 1st choice Les Bleus RB. He's good.

Mbiwa is 1st choice Les Bleus CB. He's good. A bit short for a CB (like Koscielny) but very strong.

Sissokho is an energetic box to box mid who has a pretty decent shot on him.

Gouffran is a bit meh for my taste, but Arsene was interested in him 2 years ago. A classic wide forward, although he does like playing up front at times.

      I know nothing about Haidara.

Hope this helps. Great grav btw. 🙂

So should we be considering a Newc defender again? They are all very cheap these days 🙂

I'm considering Mbiwa or Debuchy after the 2 horrible fixtures.

Right, lads, I am off. Going to see Silver Linings.

Should be a fun day tomorrow with plenty of press conferences, injury updates, and other tid bits to ponder on before the deadline on Tuesday.

Also, don't forget, El Classico on Wednesday 😀
