Scout Report – Lewis Holtby

Tottenham made their first acquisition of the winter transfer window by snapping up Lewis Holtby from Schalke earlier today. The 22-year-old midfielder had previously agreed to join the north London outfit on a free transfer next July but the deal has been pushed through by Daniel Levy earlier than anticipated, for a fee reportedly in the region of £2m.

Only a week ago, Andre Villas-Boas was somewhat sceptical of acquiring Holtby this month but the Spurs boss was nevertheless quick to sing the player’s praises:

“Lewis is a player of tremendous potential, one that we are extremely happy to have here. (He is) a very, very creative player and can play in different positions – he’s been tremendously educated in his football and has lots of experience for such a young player. We have high expectations for him.”

The Statistics

Released by Borussia MGladbach as a youngster, Holtby moved to second-tier German outfit Alemannia Aachen and, after working his way up their youth system, made his debut in the 2007-08 campaign. The midfielder mustered just two first-team appearances in his first season but the following year, a return of eight goals and 10 assists over 31 games persuaded Schalke to shell out for his services prior to 2009-10.

After producing a pair of assists in nine games, Holtby was farmed out on loan to VFL Bochum in the second half of his debut campaign, returning a couple of goals and two assists in 14 appearances. The following season he was loaned out again and made his mark at FSV Mainz 05 with four goals and 10 assists from 30 matches. Having justified his worth in German’s top division, Holtby was installed as a first-team regular by his parent club the following campaign – six goals and a pair of assists last term was followed by four goals and seven assists in 19 appearances this year; a clear sign of both his eye for goal and creativity.

On the international front, Holtby has represented Germany from Under 19 to Under 21 level, scoring 18 goals from 38 appearances, and has also turned out at senior level on three occasions.

The Prospects

Holtby’s versatility makes it difficult to ascertain his likely starting position under Villas-Boas. One theory is that the transfer has been brought forward due to Sandro’s season-ending knee injury sustained earlier at QPR this month, with the German set to tuck in alongside Mousa Dembele in the double-pivot – a fair assumption, given that the likes of Tom Huddlestone has failed to make an impact, while Scott Parker has only just returned from a long-term Achilles problem. Certainly, while Holtby has impressed as a playmaker, he’s also more than capable of grafting in the middle of the park and affords Villas-Boas a definite option from a deeper berth.

Alternatively, 22 of Holtby’s 24 starts in all competitions for Schalke this season have been in the role in “the hole”. Given that the German side also utilise a 4-2-3-1 formation, the new boy would fit seamlessly behind a lone forward and lend his creative weight to a berth that has seen Gylfi Sigurdsson and Emmanuel Adebayor fail to flourish. Although Clint Dempsey is starting to return to form, the US international will be worried by Holtby’s arrival. Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon are pretty much nailed-on out wide, leaving one position up for grabs in the attacking midfield three and with Adebayor also in the mix as a more withdrawn forward behind Defoe, Dempsey could be edged back onto the bench, despite some recent impressive displays.

In Fantasy terms, then, much is dependent on how each game views him. If Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks upon Holtby as a central midfielder, a price of around 6.0 could be on the cards, while a cost of around 7.5 to 8.0 is likelier if they expect him to be utilised as an advanced playmaker. Ideally, then, the best scenario would be for Fantasy games to price him in accordance with deep-lying midfielders, only for Villas-Boas to field up further up the pitch – giving us a budget-friendly route into Tottenham’s midfield as the north London outfit step up their pursuit of a Champions League spot over the remainder of the season.

Hmmm, if I did Davies > Clyne/Shaw/Demel I could have an extra 0.3m in order to do Distin > Nastasic/Clichy somewhere down the line. Tempted...even though none of those mentioned really have great fixtures...I do like Soton's full backs and how they attack however.

    Thoughts on this?

Not a bad thought, seeing that once you are stuck with Distin, in his price range, the only way out would really be Newcastle defenders.

Just look at your defense and try to figure out how much you would play Davies vs. Clyne / Shaw over the next 5-7 GWs.

There is the possible double, too, though to consider.

Change of plans due to the poss DGW, just when I thought I was sorted...
    Anyway..

    Currently:

    Bego, 3.9
    Rafael, Zab, Sagna, Davies, Dawson
    Mata, Bale, Walcott, Michu, Afro,
    RVP, Suarez, Pog

Gonna go Sagna & Daws >> 3.8 & 6.2 to allow for an easy transition to a Poolie defender.

Looking to sign up to a 6.2 3rd defender for the next 2 games

Sooo... Zab Raf + 1? You decide... I cant.. *facepalm*

Heitinga is back cheap at 5mil, he will be back in the middle id imagine and has some goal threat. Should strengthen the CS potential or maybe Jags at fullback has more threat. Either of those a better option than Distin?

Heitinga is not nailed on to play, so I wouldn't go there and Jagielka is not really a threat, though seems to get the odd BAP here and there. I don't think Jagielka and Distin will have much different scores for the next two.

Start by formulating something you might like on the transfers page. It's hard to work out a whole wildcard team in your head.

But fwiw: downgrade defenders. Maybe just 1 starter (Johnson/Gibbs) and 4 cheapos on rotation since you don't have much cash to work with. Sot/QPR to go with the 2 you've got maybe? Mata/Walcott/Bale/Suarez all good. Ba if you like. RVP if at all possible. Federici if you can afford.

    Rafael Hughes Davies (luiz demel)
    Michu fellaini bale Walcott (Nolan)
    Rvp berb podolski

Using my WC in gw25 so have to use my FT. What do u choose?
A: luiz >> huth and start ahead of Davies
    B: podolski >> fletch
    C: luiz + podolski >> Baines + dzeko (if he starts)/fletcher (-4)

Can’t think of any other options but currently leaning on C as I have a good feeling about Baines and its his last chance to show me if I shd include him or not in my WC team:)

It's always worth going back a few pages for some cow jokes... 😀

Afternoon DZ, I'm in the library today cos the power in my area has been out for well over a day now... bloody floods...

Anyways, with news of this potential DGW in 26, I might be tempted to hold off on my Luiz > Baines FT, keep Luiz and risk him not playing for a likely 1-2pts from Harte...

The question I ask you is, do you think a FT is worth more than 4pts in this situation?

If I held it in reserve for GW26, then I could use it to bring in a Liverpool attacker for the DGW, much more points potential a single GW defender... (although I can't say with any confidence that Baines has a points ceiling, but on average I'd say the best I can hope for is 6pts...)

    Thoughts?

      2. I can't tell from your username if you are a Madrid fan or you hate them?
      3. Don't get Bertrand, as he won't play much and you will have to waste a transfer on him anyway. I'd get a City defender regardless.

What's the best midfield punt for this week?
    A) Santi > Silva
    B) Santi > Lampard
    C) Other

Going to use wildcard next week. Current team:
    Bego (Jussi)
    Sagna O'brien Azpi (Cameron Clyne)
    Michu Fellaini Walcott Santi (Punch)
    RVP Lukaku Ba

Can't do obvious Mata or Bale without a 4pt hit.

Damn so Aguero or Suarez in for my WC?

Aguero has been on the plan for 2 weeks now. Got the better fixture. And I got a gut feeling that he will do well in this next two matches. His form before injury is too good.

Suarez got bad 2 fixtures next but Arsenal can't defend and City is badly injured. If anyone's gonna score it's Suarez and it'll save me a FT getting him in for DGW.

      B for Bale

but Distin may not be a bad shout if you gonna get him out for a Liverpool defender on DGW.

City is good but currenly badly injured. Don't know how that back line will hold.
Migno over Bego but only if you can get a Stoke defender for GW 24 & 26 - which you don't have currently.

I like the Bertrand punt with Hazard out.

West Ham defence has looked suspect as of late, but not too many better options at 4.0 other than him or Clyne.
