From The Physio

From the Physio – Daniel Sturridge

The sight of Daniel Sturridge clutching an ice pack to his thigh after 90 minutes against City offered some concern for those Fantasy managers banking on the new Anfield arrival for this week’s double fixture. Sturridge has been a hugely popular transfer target this week, despite the concern surrounding his chances of making Liverpool’s opening fixture against West Brom on Monday. Reason enough for me to make a return to the fold and examine the evidence on show surrounding the injury.

The initial concern stems from the striker limping slightly towards the end of the first half, after he’d scored the equalising goal, but having observed the match footage, Sturridge was not involved in any significant contacts nor were any excessive joint ranges evident.

The one point of note came immediately after he scored: as he strikes the ball with his left foot his body rotates excessively during the follow through and with the studs of his right foot planted firmly in the turf subsequently not allowing him to “spin on the balls of his foot” to accept the momentum, the rotary action of the force transfers to the knee and then to the hip joint.

For the next ten minutes Sturridge can be observed limping and periodically holding his upper thigh in the region of the Vastus Lateralis. (the quadriceps muscle on the outside of the thigh). However, during this period and indeed throughout the rest of the match this did not appear to affect his mobility or his agility as Sturridge can be witnessed twisting and turning, accelerating and decelerating and dribbling with pace. Movements that would highlight any significant injuries.

It is also worth noting that Sturridge is only just approaching full match fitness and as such his muscles are still adapting to the overload and some tightness in the quadriceps area, which is the biggest muscle of the leg and the prime moving agonist during the kicking motion, should be expected.

He would also have been assessed at half-time and cleared to play without an unreasonable risk of further injury, a further indication that the injury was mild and stable. The evidence leads me to believe that Sturridge suffered a mild grade 1 Quadriceps strain that, with treatment, should see the double Gameweek favourite back for Monday’s encounter.

Hmm, I just looked at Evertons fixtures - they aren't that hard...Norwich, Reading, Stoke, Arsenal (who won't be able to contain The Fell)

Man City and Man Utd only hard games and they couldnt contain The Fell either!

There are about 20 midfielders that I would like. I'd love to be able to play 3-6-1.

yeah, I would be sneaking in Silva if I could do that...

Imagine if at the start of the FPL season you were allowed a one time decison for the rest of the season...

Just missing the goals, as much as Jelavic has been off top form I kinda feel like they don't create that many clear cut opportunities - plenty of headers and half chances but they don't slice teams open completely that often

What Corrigan said below...I'm keeping an eye on future moves if I go JE. I can rest easy and know I have enough to do Michu > Fellaini. Plus I can also do Suarez > Aguero this way and not need a hit if I decided to do that move. Make sense?

Yeah, in that case I'd say JE, being able to get 11 out without a hit in GW27 could be just as crucial as this week IMO. The selling gap from Michu to fellaini is around 0.3-0.4 I think no? Got no idea as I have both

Not being smug, my team is Baleless

Suarez now on 93% for a rise, finally some movement that may force a rise before deadline. Need that rise, else my decision to let that first rise go will be very stupid indeed.

It's hard to predict. But I am getting Man United defensive coverage in myself soon, if that means anything.

We have a few nice homes games coming up, we need to bounce back soon! It's in May when we need to be on top form, I'm keeping - or at least clinging onto - the faith.

Not that much IMO, with Jones injured his only real competition is Smalling atm.

For me United defenders in order of nailed-onness

          Evra
          Rafa
          Evans

Vidic and Rio likely to rotate around Evans with Smalling filling in when Rafa needs a rest.

Maloney has pens. But both could be good picks.

I would warn you about Kebe, but I have a history of owning players at the wrong time. He seems to be hitting some form. I'm likely to use the money saved from swapping Rafa to Evans to get Kebe in for Guthrie

If you look at the article it says:

"For the next ten minutes Sturridge can be observed limping and periodically holding his upper thigh in the region of the Vastus Lateralis."

The pictures i saw confirm this, this gives us an initial indication of the *region of injury, not the localised site or the specific diagnosis (the fingers of his hand cover proximal Vast Lat and his palm the proximal aspect of Rec Fem)...if we were to delve deeper and assess the extensive levered rotation, we observe a slightly abnormal mechanical synergy...due to the implanted studs of WB leg, the bodys natural movement for this action is constrained and the rotatory force has nowhere else to go but through the knee to the hip (with some thoracic rotation thrown in too) and as it has been reported that he has a thigh injury, if it was indeed caused by this incident then the first one of the four quadriceps to check would be Rec Fem... because Rec Fem spans two joints, it is a hip flexor and a leg extensor (the other quads are leg extensors and only cross one joint) and as it covers two joints it would be the first put under pressure in this instance...it is due to the effects of active and passive insufficiency, so I wouldn't be too suprised if a grade 1 strain to the muscle belly of Rectus Femoris was indeed the diagnosis

In the articles I try to simpify concepts without making them simplistic, otherwise it'd be as boring as this reply

I'm mulling those two options. I think it basically comes down to, How many points will the 4th double gameweeker gain you over the player you bin (For me, Suarez vs. Aguero). Also, will you be happy with your team next week if one of your transfers has to be to moving a double gameweeker to get a full team? If Demel has been dropped, I'll only have 10 unless I take ANOTHER hit. I'm leaning towards taking the hit. Not having Suarez scares me too much.

True, true. I'm basically hoping that Suarez is 8 points better than Aguero this week. If everything goes perfectly (no injuries, Demel starts playing again) it turns out I'm only spending 4 points. I think 20+ points from Suarez this week is very possible.

      Yep..play with 3 dgwers and you get 11 + 3 + 11 starts = 25 starts
      play with 4 and you get 11 + 4 + 10 + 1ft = 26 starts
      play with 5 and you get 11 + 5 + 9 + 1ft = 26 starts (same)

All three scenarios require you play with the rubbish on you bench for the second week or take hits

If you play with two then you get 11 + 2 + 11 = 24 starts and with the use of you ft maintain a full working team for second g/w....
