The Stock Check – Sunday

Charles N’Zogbia inspires Villa to a precious three points, while United put in a frighteningly efficient shift to neutralise the Everton threat and grab the points via Robin Van Persie’s efforts. Here’s the Stock Check on Sunday’s events…

On the Up

Robin Van Persie
With two consecutive blanks, the Van Persie naysayers were rounding on the Dutchman, fueled by Wayne Rooney’s consistent scoring. Amidst concerns that the Dutchman could be rested with Wednesday’s Madrid tie in mind, we’ve seen sales of Van Persie throughout the week which have even led to a price drop in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Today’s goal and assist returns, however, instantly stung those who decided to trade him out and underlined his importance, both to United and our Fantasy lineups.

Rafael
The Brazilian chipped in with a slide rule pass to set Van Persie on his way to United’s second, whilst sealing back-to-back clean sheets at the other end. With Sir Alex Ferguson clearly allowing Everton possession but dropping his side deep to defend with some determination, we could now see Rafael and the United backline begin to find form and start returning a stream of clean sheets. Rested back in Gameweek 24, the Brazilian’s performance today demonstrated just why he has cemented the right-back role this term.

David De Gea
Can we now settle on the Spaniard as an option in goal? De Gea has started the last 11 league matches and, given that he was not rotated ahead of the Champions League clash with Madrid, it appears his position is looking as solid as ever. At 5.5 in the FPL, De Gea offers a cheap route to the United clean sheets which may now start to follow with regularity as they close in on the title. Interestingly, Ben Amos was on the United bench ahead of Anders Lindegaard, and yet the Dane was on the bench for his country in midweek – presumably fit and well: it’s a situation that warrants monitoring.

Charles N’Zogbia
It seems unlikely that a Villa player can find his way into our midfields but there’s little doubt that N’Zogbia is the leading candidate on offer. The former Wigan man returned a goal and assist in the win over West Ham and has now fetched points in three of his last four outings. It’s clear that Villa’s top-flight status rests on his form and Christian Benteke’s goals.

Going Down

Wayne Rooney
With Sir Alex Ferguson keen to ensure that his side conceded little ground to Everton, Rooney’s attacking instincts were shackled by a role out on the left flank for the majority of the match. His potential curbed, Rooney was rarely able to threaten in tandem with Van Persie and his owners will surely have been frustrated by the withdrawn role granted to him and the Dutchman’s timely return to form.

Marouane Fellaini
Sir Alex Ferguson deployed Phil Jones to snuff out the threat from the Belgian and it proved effective. Dropped deeper towards the end of the match by David Moyes, with Gareth Bale now a hot midfield property, Fellaini may be reluctantly sacrificed by some, with competition in the midfield area so fierce. The fixture list and past experience would suggest that patience with Fellaini will be rewarded, although, having earned an eighth booking of the season, another suspension is now a growing concern.

Joey O’Brien
Forced off on 25 minutes, the Hammers full-back was replaced by Guy Demel who returned to the fold after sitting out the home win over Swansea. This report states that O’Brien has suffered a thigh injury that will see him left at home for treatment while the Hammers squad go out to Dubai for a “warm weather break”. With fortnight before the next league action, it remains to be seen if the injury will put him on the sidelines for the Gameweek 27 fixture with Spurs.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

have gone from pretty content with all things FPL to now pretty terrified about tomorrow. if sturridge misses out it's not just a case of sturridge missing out, it makes suarez twice the player, that's twice the player the majority will have captained.
may have to invest in a nappy tomorrow

it's true he didn't train on friday though, that's about the one thing i've seen evidence for. just hope it wont come down to hoping sturridge misses the 2nd dgw game too in order to get michu VC as that will be depressing to hope to get that lucky

Sturridge was the player I was most worried about not having (I have Johnson, Gerrard and Suarez instead) but I couldn't work out an easy way to bring him in, so settled for bringing Gerrard in.

Suarez can be lethal on his day, but having watched plenty of Liverpool games, Sturridge has been threatening big scores playing centrally.

As you say, a lot depends on who starts, but Suarez is capable of a big haul no matter what, the chance is just slightly reduced if he plays wide.

Looking forward to the match though

My transfer plan to field 11 in GW27 was 2 FTs Gerrard and Michu to Bale and Sissoko, which I still intend to do, but should I do it early?

I can afford to let Bale rise a bit as I'm downgrading Michu, it just seems like a waste, still Gerrard could do well and sway me to keep him.

Any thoughts, transfers now, or on the 22nd after Europa and FA Cup?

I think wait on this one, Bale will probably go up 0.3, but can't go up any more, and there's loads of games in which people can get injured.

Yeah that's pretty much my conclusion, best to play it safe, and make sure I can field 11, it just seems a waste to lose 0.3 on Bale like that

Ok, many are in the same boat but I'm still not liking my lack of players this week.

Have 9 playing right now and one (Anichebe) is doubtful, hopefully Eva Carneiro will give him a hand. 8-). So.... looking at 8 playing.

Basically, my plan is to get 2 more in (-4 hit) and cross fingers on Anichebe. The odds of a -8 hit paying off are too slim for my liking, though by no means impossible. I've made it work before with a modest profit. At least there's no downside if the players being sold aren't playing. There would of course be long term implications of knee jerking out perfectly decent players for the next 6 and that tilts me against it.

So the week comes down to a good captaincy choice (Walcott here... probably) and me pulling the mother of all -4 hits out of the bag.

Forward + defender worth 18m. Any suggestions?

Looking at Evans and Rooney right now.

It does worry me a little but there's a quote from fergie that Rooney has to play regularly to stay fit so shouldn't be rested much. And he has been playing virtually every game.

Cisse is great on paper in that attack but have doubts about his form. Owned him gw24-25 as punt and he missed so many chances. Also Sissoko seems to be playing as high as him!

Cheers, I've got a small amount of leeway because I've so much in the bank from... selling RVP. So if need be yes I could cave in and get him back with an ok budget defender. But the reasons I sold him still hold true, I've done it as a punt til gw29 or so. Will be looking at alternatives til then at earliest and be choosing a different captain each week.

I'm going to take a hit too, and I think it's worth it to get a good team out, as long as those players will stay in your team for the foreseeable future.

haha, it has been a pretty tough decision. The other options to get rid of are:

        Mata, Fellaini, Walcott, Maloney

If I get rid of Maloney, I'll have a strong front 8 which will cause me benching headaches every week.

Plus, getting rid of Michu allows me 11 players next GW

Think Rafael is more safe too. Jones has been playing in midfield and CB and looking good there too. Rafael is much better @ RB compared to his competition than Evans is @ CB compared to his. I'd get him if i had the cash now

This was my thinking exactly. Vidic looked good today, and I think that all 3 CBs (as well as Jones or Smalling) could get game time at CB. I'd want Rafael over Smalling/Jones at RB all day long.

Interesting reading posts up above, the Suarez owners scared of Sturridge, and the Sturridge owners scared of Suarez 😀 Make that double scared as in most cases those are the captains, too. I personally wouldn't mind if their scores aren't too dissimilar...wouldn't want to see huge swings in people's seasons over one 50-50 coin flip decision...
