The Watchlist – Christian Benteke

He may have arrived on these shores as a relative unknown last summer but Premier League defences are now more than familiar with Christian Benteke. Standing six foot three, the young Belgian has battered and bullied many a backline into submission with a series of physical performances highlighting his suitability to England’s top-flight – on his broad shoulders, Villa’s chances of survival may well just depend.

It took him less than 20 minutes to announce himself to Fantasy managers. Sent on as a 71st minute sub in the Gameweek 4 home clash against Swansea, Benteke grabbed a goal in a 2-0 win, helping Paul Lambert’s side to their first win of the season. Since then, the former Genk player has started every league match for the midlanders and has played a part in 15 of the 22 goals Villa have scored since his debut – an incredible contribution, which has seen him rack up 11 goals and four assists thus far.

With spot-kick duties also in the bag, Benteke has made a mockery of his initial 6.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and, with 16 bonus points also accrued, has returned 115 points over his 24 appearances – an average of 4.6 points per game. As the season reaches a critical stage for Lambert’s struggling side, Benteke’s displays alone can be immune from criticism; he has scored in two of his last three at home and notched in three of the last four on the road.

Luckily for the Villa faithful, the upcoming schedule smiles kindly on their side. Having slipped back into the drop zone in recent weeks, Lambert’s troops now face the bottom two in back-to-back Gameweeks, with a trip to Reading this weekend followed by a home clash with QPR. Following that, Benteke welcomes Liverpool to Villa Park – a side he registered two goals and an assist against back in mid-December – and with games against Stoke and Fulham also on his agenda in the next five, the potential for points is obvious.

Now up to 7.0 in FPL, and priced at 7.5 Sky Sports game, Benteke has been snapped up by over 25,000 FPL managers this week ahead of a Gameweek that has just six fixtures for us to consider. While Charles N’Zogbia has hinted at a return to his Wigan form in recent fixtures, the Frenchman’s lack of overall consistency has failed to persuade many to snap up his services – instead, it’s Benteke who looks the man most likely. Granted, he may be vying for our attentions with a series of similarly priced strikers such as Romelu Lukaku, Rickie Lambert, Steven Fletcher and Arouna Kone but, as he’s illustrated already, Benteke is more than ready for the battle.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Good point. Still, it makes the Newcastle back four even less appealing now.

I guess I mean depending on who you have.

Obviously if you can already field 3 defenders with decent fixtures in future weeks when the player you're bringing in has good fixtures, it's not the best fit.

Martin works in my case becuase I need a defender for this week, GW 31 and GW32. He has good fixtures for all 3.

    Bego
    Wilson, Cameron, Shaw, Davies
    Sissy, Michu, Bale
    Suarez, Lambert

    (Mata, Walcott, Aguero, Rafael)
    1FT

Due to a schoolboy error, have three Stokies. Ugh. Would you do:

    A. Lukaku (or similar) for Aguero
    B. Debucy/Santon for Rafael
    C. Get rid of Cameron
    D. Get rid of Cameron AND take a hit to field 11
    E. Do nothing and have 2FTs next GW?

Hopefully by relegating Giroud to the bench and playing Wally up front.

I think the crisis narrative with Arsenal is a bit overdone. They're still the 3rd best team in the form table (last 6 games), and have conceded the 4th fewest goals overall. Which is probably where you would expect a team playing for 4th place to be.

    -
    GJ Davies Pearce
    Michu Bale Puncheon
    Benteke Lukaku

I have plenty of dosh (for this week anyway) and 1 FT. Who do you look to add to that rabble? I really can only see the boringness of getting Suarez and playing with 9. Sissoko, Snodgrass, N'Zogbia, Sessegnon, none of them are doing it for me tbh. Alternatively take a hit for a defender but then who? The two premium defences are facing each other and have the two most on form attacking players in the league. Or take a hit for a keeper which ok would only be a 2 point hit but I can't see a keeper who I trust to pay me back 4 points by the end of the week.

You've got most of the main threats this week, I can see you outscoring plenty of teams with XI even without a change. Suarez is the obvious one to bring in but for good reason.

Yeah the only real dangers with this team at the moment are Suarez and Sissoko, but it looks strong enough to survive decent performances from them. I think Lukaku could have a bit of a stormer.

I'd consider using your FT to swap Aguero, Clichy or Rafael for someone with a fixture this week.

They might not have a DGW for another 6 weeks so that's plenty of time to get them back in.

Aguero > Suarez is a solid move. I know it's hardly original but the game is about getting points.

Since you have 3 expensive defender, you could also consider downgrading Rafael or Clichy with your FT as I mentioned, probably for a Turner/Martin, Hill/Samba or Wilson

One of the latter moves would obviously give you more cash and more flexibility for the DGWs as well as an extra 2-6 points this week

Cheers TM. I quite like having 3 expensive defenders - they have been quite good to me over the season.

I do think the boring Aguero > Suarez will be done tomorrow. If Liverpool or Spurs were playing any of the other teams I'd probably take a hit for a defender or keeper but they aren't so I won't.

            Sounds good.

3 defenders from Arsenal, City, United and Chelsea certainly isn't a bad strategy now with the DGWs coming up.

            Aguero > Suarez beckons!

Other striker is RVP and Sturridge. Any suggestions would be great thanks.

Thanks. Maybe I should just do Aguero > Benteke and Baines > GJ.
I don't have enough cash to do Aguero > Suarez without switching the MF. Do you think Nani would be useful till the end of season now that Utd is out of CL?

could be, but too expensive for my tastes. however if you already own him, depending on the look of your squad this week, would be a nice play v reading. cant really say anyone on utd is "useful" until the end of the season besides RVP. anyone else seemingly nailed on could be dropped any given GW without warning.

then dont do it. michu will play every game, usually OOP, his points per game average over the final 10 gws may not match his points per game this season to date, but doesnt have to be to justify keeping him. still its fun to roll the dice a bit and go off template. like i said if theres ever a time to do it its against reading. just be prepared to want to transfer kagawa out before seasons end. likely will miss a start or two.

No you can now confirm they won't be going ahead.

They don't have to formally announce that but by the fact they haven't there now isn't enough time to arrange it in accordance with the police.

nothing yet so probably past date to organise it. Maybe wrong but would say it was hard to get a game arranged in space of 5/6 days.

                      This may help captain choices

Some info gathered from the last four weeks on teams playing this week.

Most attacking: LIV, TOT, SUN, SOT
Worst attack: REA, STOKE, NOR, WBA

Best defence: LIV, SOU, TOT, NOR
Worst defence: AVL, WBA, REA, SWA

So looking at that what we ideally want to see is the best attack against the worst defence..instead three of the most attacking teams are actually against three of the best defences.

I know I was really hoping it would point to Lambert or Benteke...but sadly they all seem to cancel each other out. All the main protagonists have a pretty even chance. Makes Suarez or Bale probably the best of the bunch.

If anyone has any stats on spurs performance after UEFA matches that would be handy. I think it has to be between Suarez and Bale for the armband...but Suarez might win it if Spurs can be proven to be worse after their euro tussles.

That might indicate Michu could do well.

I think the member's cup is a fantastic idea and I'm gutted that I lost out this week.

Fair play to the guy who knocked me out with Suarez (c).

However, I think that with the new comments system coming in next year, there should be an extra condition for those wanting to enter: a minimum amount of comments. No lurkers! 😉

Arsenal have decent fixtures and a very enticing dgw but only Walcott and maybe Santi are particularly tempting. Assuming most people will try and get a third in, but who?

Monreal or Sagna? Gibbs needs to be monitored though.

Maybe the keeper too I guess but not overly excited by any of them.
