The Watchlist – Christian Benteke

He may have arrived on these shores as a relative unknown last summer but Premier League defences are now more than familiar with Christian Benteke. Standing six foot three, the young Belgian has battered and bullied many a backline into submission with a series of physical performances highlighting his suitability to England’s top-flight – on his broad shoulders, Villa’s chances of survival may well just depend.

It took him less than 20 minutes to announce himself to Fantasy managers. Sent on as a 71st minute sub in the Gameweek 4 home clash against Swansea, Benteke grabbed a goal in a 2-0 win, helping Paul Lambert’s side to their first win of the season. Since then, the former Genk player has started every league match for the midlanders and has played a part in 15 of the 22 goals Villa have scored since his debut – an incredible contribution, which has seen him rack up 11 goals and four assists thus far.

With spot-kick duties also in the bag, Benteke has made a mockery of his initial 6.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and, with 16 bonus points also accrued, has returned 115 points over his 24 appearances – an average of 4.6 points per game. As the season reaches a critical stage for Lambert’s struggling side, Benteke’s displays alone can be immune from criticism; he has scored in two of his last three at home and notched in three of the last four on the road.

Luckily for the Villa faithful, the upcoming schedule smiles kindly on their side. Having slipped back into the drop zone in recent weeks, Lambert’s troops now face the bottom two in back-to-back Gameweeks, with a trip to Reading this weekend followed by a home clash with QPR. Following that, Benteke welcomes Liverpool to Villa Park – a side he registered two goals and an assist against back in mid-December – and with games against Stoke and Fulham also on his agenda in the next five, the potential for points is obvious.

Now up to 7.0 in FPL, and priced at 7.5 Sky Sports game, Benteke has been snapped up by over 25,000 FPL managers this week ahead of a Gameweek that has just six fixtures for us to consider. While Charles N’Zogbia has hinted at a return to his Wigan form in recent fixtures, the Frenchman’s lack of overall consistency has failed to persuade many to snap up his services – instead, it’s Benteke who looks the man most likely. Granted, he may be vying for our attentions with a series of similarly priced strikers such as Romelu Lukaku, Rickie Lambert, Steven Fletcher and Arouna Kone but, as he’s illustrated already, Benteke is more than ready for the battle.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    I am thinking.

GW 29: Pog, Aguero, Fellaini >> Lukaku, Benteke, MacAnuff (-8)
    GW 30: Lukaku > RvP

The 8 point hit allows me to bring in at least 6 points from the three players so it doesn't feel too bad. Thoughts?

      Can you just do this?

      Fellaini > MacAnuff
      Pog > Benteke (-4)

      Aguero > RVP (GW30)?

Well arguably it's a 2.66666666666666666666666 point hit... but something tells me McAnuff isn't the main reason he's doing those moves!

It's not an 8 point hit for MacAnuff, though. Also, I am transitioning from 3-5-2 to 3-4-3 so it makes sense for that reason, too.

      Points predictions for this team?

      Bunn (SOU)

Shaw (nor), Enrique (TOT), Davies (wba)

Sissoko (STK), Coutinho (TOT), Bale (liv)

Benteke (rdg) (c), Lambert (nor), Suarez (TOT)

      I reckon... 2, 2, 5, 1, 6, 5, 7, 20, 6, 6 pre-baps. Which would be 60, bit lacklustre but I guess it'll be a low-scoring week generally.

I've currently got 7 starters for this game week.

Don't want to touch my five mids (Mata, Bale, Fella, Walcott and Michu) or RVP.

If i make the one change - I can afford up to 5.2 for a striker, or up to 4.8 for a goalie.

But will likely try Bunn and Bothroyd if I take the hit.

-4 for me. Suarez and Sessegnon are keepers for more than a week, so am happy to take a hit. Plus, have been looking at the great prices on attackers in the 7m-8m range: Yaya, Giroud, Oscar, Lampard, MUN midfielder, Berbatov, Fellaini are all readymade transfer options for the dgws even before more price falls this weekend.

I was lurking when you posted your question about the Aguero replacement. Meant to reply but got involved in work.
I think a one week punt on anyone you fancy is a better option relative to getting Suarez. Tottenham's defence is good, you know that and SOT is not the easiest fixture imo. Also, i fancy United to score more goals vs. Reading than Liverpool vs. any opposition.
Also, it adds to giving more time to monitor the Suarez/Sturridge situation. Talks of Sturridge being value have gone down at the moment, but it could easily be an FPL deception. Suarez hat-trick can be blinding, but i remember thinking long and hard before ditching Suarez after the DGW. I think, take some time before choosing one of the two, Sturridge could still be the better buy.

FWIW, i did Aguero -> Benteke. Intend on getting Rooney or Suarez the week after or maybe a United midfielder. Other strikers are Sturridge and RVP.

Yeah that was my initial thought too. In many ways getting Suarez is a defensive tactic - if he goes mental this week above all others I'm screwed.

I already have Benteke and Lukaku am very tempted by Remy though and then enough money to replace anybody with anyone I want the week after.

but isn't your opinon a little biased considering you already have RVP and Sturridge? Lots of people last week who had Sturridge refused to get Suarez on the basis that it was an overload.

              Might be.

But i am trying to be neutral. I owned Suarez for about 10GW's atleast before the DGW. It was a tough decision for me to lose him, but i really did think long and hard before deciding to lose Suarez. I'll be Stubborn. For some time. I am not going to let that one-hat trick blind my logic. For now.

I'm not surprised by Cabaye, the stats are good and he's better than Sissoko

Cant go simply by RMT - The expected value is fairly skewed with very high variances. It works out pretty nicely over a team of 11 and over a few gameweeks, but on an individual basis, it is another story.

GB, I ran Suarez (home) vs. Bale (away) on a per-match average. It's close. I wish we could do Bale last 4 away games vs. Suarez last 4 home games...I really want to have a data set that only captures Bale's recent playing position.

heres all the data you need....

Bale is unstoppable right now. throw the stats away. suarez just got his trick and will likely get his 9th yellow and 1 point.

Is there really any need to judge Bale's away form/stats vs anyone else? You already know he is a beast away from home and possibly more reliable away than home in general.

Only the likes of RVP, Cazorla and Suarez can compete with Bale for away form this season.

You can use the 'gameweek range' option in the range drop down. Unfortunately this doesn't split out home v away though.

Just having a look at team iv got 9 players and Gutrie is he totally out of favour.

Mite take a 4 hit to get him out as if his replacement plays will be 2 point back right away.

      Best budget option?

      A) McAnuff
      B) Gardner
      C) Brad johnson
      D) Other?

Gardner at least has pens but chances are your just taking a 2 point loss - whats the point? Get Maloney for his double in a few weeks preferably for free.

      Transfers: (-4)

      Anichebe --> Remy
      Van Persie --> Sturridge

      Good moves long-term?

      so thoughts on this idea

Pog ➡ Benteke (c) (-4) to get 10 out this week

Then Fellaini and Benteke ➡ Maloney and Rooney (c) for -4 next week

The Fellaini move is necessary to fund Rooney in, but can I justify a -4 this week for a player I'll keep 1 week?

Other option is to sell Suarez or Sturridge and keep Benteke.

I wouldn't do it, your basically banking on a goal from Benteke (I say that as an assist is very unlikely, he has fewer assists than Azpi)

but you still start at -2 .
So you own Suarez and Sturridge? If so I would do it and remove Sturridge (or just review the situation after the gw)
