The Stock Check – Monday

Sunderland show spirit to battle back with ten men and earn a precious point courtesy of a John O’Shea goal, after Jon Walters had struck from close range for visiting Stoke. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday night’s relegation scrap.

On the Up

Jon Walters
When the Potters required vital goals, it’s been Walters who has been on hand to provide them. Three strikes in eight matches doesn’t sound that impressive but, when you consider that Stoke have notched just six goals in that spell, the scale of Walters’ contribution is clear. Quietly, he’s moved to eight goals for the season, surpassing last season’s tally with two games to spare. Walters is an unfashionable option but, if he remains classified in midfield next term and on Stoke spot-kicks, it’s clear he is a player that can be relied upon over the course of the season.

John O’Shea
Another hugely unfashionable Fantasy signing, O’Shea has been Sunderland only real secure defensive asset. aside from Simon Mignolet in goal, but has attracted under 3% ownership. Those Fantasy managers will have been delighted with a second goal of the season tonight and, with four assists to his name, O’Shea has enjoyed a steady campaign, having also gained nine clean sheets.

Going Down

Craig Gardner
A reckless “over the top” challenge on Stoke’s Charlie Adam saw Gardner receive a straight red after just 34 minutes, with Sunderland already a goal down. The Black Cats rallied without him but, with Steven Fletcher injured and Stephane Sessegnon suspended, Paolo Di Canio is now without his three leading scorers for the remaining two fixtures, although he it should be noted that he elected to start Gardner at right-back this evening.

Marc Wilson
The Stoke left-back was again introduced back into the starting lineup following recent hamstring problems and, for the second match running, was forced off as the injury plagued him once again. Wilson has not completed 90 minutes since Gameweek 31 and will again be a concern for Stoke’s remaining fixtures.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who will play in Gerrard's position if he is indeed out for the next two games? Henderson? I guess that's his more natural position anyway. Overall, it's making Coutinho and Sturridge a bit less attractive, I must admit, given how influential Gerrard has been to Liverpool's overall performances.

Totally agree. I've got a solid squad, but with Michu hurt & Berbatov (sucking) am looking to replace one ... with cost not much of an issue. I was leaning towards Sturridge (and thinking about Coutinho), but this does make them slightly less attractive to me as Gerrard is huge influence on the squad. But there isn't another obvious transfer. I could go Cazorla, but the 2s and 3s are way more likely than the 15s with him.

    If you were clearly going to be a world class footballer from a young age, as in Messi level, but you were from somewhere like say, Madagascar and knew you would never see a world cup, would you;

    a) play for madagascar with pride
    b) refuse caps, play for a club in spain or somewhere like that until you get citizenship, then have a proper crack at a world cup.

Which one would you bench out of this lot?

Walcott (WIG) Bale (stk) Lampard (avl) Mata (avl) Fellaini (WHU)

Defoe (stk) Tevez (rdg) Lukaku (nor)

Currently on Fellaini, though I think Mata has every chance of getting benched if we win the game against Spurs.

Wait & see what happens against Spurs, I guess. I'd still bench Fellaini, though he has had 2 horrific misses in the last two games, he is either about to score or have another horrific miss 🙂

Well yeah, but it's a no brainer right? If we win against Spurs, that would mean qualification for the CL, and with EL final just 4 days later, he'll surely be rested?

Has anyone considered Lampard or Oscar as a replacement for Michu?

Chelsea have plenty to play for and have 2 decent fixtures left,

Lampard probably the best pick eh? Looking at Berbs -> Studge in 38 so probably don't want to double with Coutinho....

Hey Jins. I don't really want to double up Chelsea (already have Mata) and both Lampard and Oscar could easily miss some playtime over the next two...I'd like to get someone who is nailed on...

        Hey Pepin, long time!

I have no CHE at the moment so a little different for me. Could be Lampard's swansong if he leaves in the summer so I kinda expect him to play both. Also as CHE probably need 2 wins I think they'll rest very few of their big guns. Coutinho is the only other option IMO, but they have nothing to play for and I'll probably be getting Studge (way more of a goal threat) in 38 so would like to cover some CHE. If pushed, do you prefer Lamps or Oscar?

Wait and see what happens against Spurs. Some Chelsea fans may also be able to tell you if Lampard is likely to play in the EL final. Their games aren't easy, though, so it's anyone's guess. I am going for Coutinho myself.

I have Lamps, who's hungry for those 2 goals. Always nice to have players who want to score. Just hope we get the CL spot against Spurs.

I'm swaying towards Lamps myself for this week's transfer.

I really don't want Spurs to get into the CL, Bale will leave next season and I don't think their squad without him are capable enough.

If Chelsea beat Spurs, I'm in on Lampard. And that's even though I don't have Walcott, I want no part of teams playing Wigan at this time of the year.

Got to look on the bright side tonight, that draw could be absolutely crucial if we can go on and get something from the Soton game. Win and I think we will stay up, draw and it's down to how the other teams do. Either way, proud of the fight we showed after going down to 10 men.

    Ha'way the lads

Who do ye think was the most misplaced bandwagon of the session?

For me it is Sissoko but the Tevez bandwagon at the that built up for the dgw would give him a run for his money.
