Pre-Season

Sleeper – Matt Jarvis

Having tasted relegation with Wolves at the end of the 2011/12 campaign, Matt Jarvis was afforded the chance of a quick top-flight return with just a few days left of last summer’s transfer window. Costing West Ham a club record fee in the region of £10m, the winger was soon followed by the loan acquisition of Andy Carroll as Sam Allardyce looked to freshen up his front three in light of the Hammers’ promotion:

Initially, there was a degree of relative optimism that Jarvis – at 6.0 – could potentially rival Kevin Nolan as a genuine mid-price Fantasy contender in the Hammers midfield. Given that his final season at Molineux had harvested eight goals, six assists and 14 bonus points, for a respectable 142 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, Jarvis’ delivery from the left flank looked tailor-made for Carroll’s aerial abilities, with plenty of assists anticipated.

By the time the season had come to an end, however, Jarvis had proved a bitter disappointment for Fantasy managers. Despite a security of starts which saw him make 29 first XI appearances (in addition to three games off the bench), he found the net just twice and also chipped in with just a couple of FPL assists, ending his first term at Upton Park on just 92 points in the FPL game – a full 57 points behind Nolan, and 50 points less than his tally for Wolves the previous year.

The Prospects

In all likelihood, Jarvis’ displays over the course of 2012/13 should see his price drop further across the Fantasy games. Given his minimal impact, there’d be little surprise if the former Wolves man slipped down to 5.5 in FPL but, while last term’s returns are undoubtedly far from persuasive, his home form towards the tail end of last term, which harvested a goal and four bonus points in his final couple of Upton Park appearances, suggests he may be worth monitoring.

Furthermore, the number of chances created last season indicates he was more than a little unlucky not to pick up a far greater number of assists. According to the Opta definition, Jarvis failed to supply a single assist for his Hammers team mates but, over the course of the campaign, made close to 50 “key passes” – a clear indication that he maintained a steady source of creativity from the flank. Indeed, Jarvis supplied 10 more goalscoring opportunities than Theo Walcott over 2012/13, for example, though thanks to his team mates’ superior finishing, the latter picked up 13 FPL assists, or 10 according to Opta.

While Carroll is currently back at parent club Liverpool, Allardyce has already admitted that securing the big forward’s future on a permanent basis is a “big priority”. The Geordie’s impact towards the end of the season also suggests he found his feet after a patchy settling-in period and, if he does indeed arrive, could bolster Jarvis’s potential next time out if he continues in the same vein. Allardyce has also been linked with Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo as he looks to rectify a record that produced a mere 11 goals on the road all season – the worst away haul in the Premier League.

With Nolan set for an increase in cost after finishing the season with a flourish, it may well be that the Hammers skipper is priced out of our options in the mid-price bracket. Given that Mark Noble will remain the club’s spot-kick taker and offer us a budget midfield alternative, Jarvis is likely to stay firmly off Fantasy radars next time round. If he can maintain his creative endeavours, though, the winger will be optimistic of picking up more returns next time round and may be a real under the radar option as Allardyce looks to ensure his side avoid “second season syndrome” and improve upon last term’s tenth placed finish.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Just as a little nudge there is still some brilliant posting being done by The3rdTurd on the goalkeeper rotation hot topic on the last article http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/06/10/homecrowd-is-live/?hc_page=12#hc_comment_4961547

Old habits die hard but keeping track of the hot topics despite there being a new post might reward you with some nice nuggets of information...

Generally speaking, companies technical support and security divisions tend to take a fairly dim view of workers changing the browsers.

Or they keep running old stuff deliberately. I work for a fairly large company and we run a pile of junk like excel 2003 - and we thrash the hell out of excel - but it takes a massive effort with little gain to upgrade.

Is there any intention to allow people to sticky the threads they want to sticky and have them show in a tab like the hot comments, so they can quickly access them when they want. Also then a way to unsticky them.

I was thinking more as an improvement, a way for us to identify threads we want to have easy access to. We flag the thread and it can be found in like the hopt topic ie our own personal hot topics.

This, it is the only reason I dont use the comments section very often because trying to find things you've posted and to find out if there has been a response is painful. I was hoping homecrowd would fix it but guess Ill go back to lurking with the occasional post.

I get it, that works but ideally a widget on the front screen with your last five or ten posts would be ideal rather than going into your profile.

However this doesn't take into account those threads you want to watch but you haven't posted on. I guess its just a case of posting on a thread you are interested in even if you have nothing to say and that way you have it in your list but I'm sure that is not what is wanted.

          Stickies are important things.

Hot topics are like stickies, only hotter.

Remember, we can only fit 10 hot topics in the side widget, so making loads of hot topics kind of defeats the purpose.

I know this is totally off topic, but what do people think about PS4 Vs. Xbox One. Personally I don't feel the urge to spend £80 for the Xbox One just so i can use Kinect to play Just Dance 5.

All depends on the exclusives for me. Most games I play on the PC anyway, so unless there's a decent list of exclusives for either that I really want then, actually, I may just avoid consoles for a while.

I watched the Xbox thing yesterday and wasn't really that impressed, tbh. The non-DRM, 2nd hand games and £80 cheaper put the PS4 ahead, if I do get, though.

Last seasons targeted ways to improve:

    a) Take hit's if it's necessary to jump on a band wagon before the price rises too high

    b) If the wagon has gone, don't chase points.

    c) Take less captain gambles

This seasons targeted ways to improve:

    a) Take less hits by saving free transfers

    b) Don't over focus on fixtures if a player's in form

    c) Do more research into cheap defensive players with good rotation.

Thing about bandwagons is, when do you know whether it's just a flash in the pan (e.g. Sissoko) or if it's an underlying and sustainable trend (e.g. Lambert)?

It's generally only clear in hindsight, by which time it's often too late.

Usually because every man and they're dog is going for that player. The smaller band wagons are often started without much foresight and don't get as big a following but are still attractive propositions.

When somebody is due to shoot up at least 0.2 in a week they're worth going for straight away so long as the player you're taking out is a sensible choice.

My biggest problem is that I always pick terrible 3rd strikers. I haven't been playing this game long but over the couple of years I've had:

Bendtner, Graham, Yakubu, Fletcher, Crouch(lol), Berbatov

I always seem to get them when they cool down and keep them for long periods of time

I try to pick 2 big hitting strikers and a third that's consistent, they don't have to be 'cheap' as such but may be below 10mil. I think that the striker choices are the most important choices in the game and can't understand why anybody has a 3rd striker that rotates in and out.

For me 3 strikers every GW is a must.

B is definitely one for me, especially with attackers. You see a striker from a mid table club is in form but has maybe 2 games in the next 4 against 'big clubs' and don't get him in. Form is definitely more important than fixtures

On your second C) Cheap players all round came to the fore end of last season I think. We were also lucky with a few cheapies from early on. Michu etc.

I think everything will again depend on how well the top ten expensive players do, as to where we will need to fill in with cheap. Or maybe we will get away with a £70 mil squad if we're quick.

Last seasons targeted ways to improve:

      a) Was less stubborn and got in the must have players that I should have gotten much earlier

      b) Saved transfers to allow more flexibility and reduce hits

      c) Didn't fall for the silly bandwagons as easily

This seasons targeted ways to improve

      a) Be more willing to take hits for any must have player

      b) Don't sell players who are on form

      c) Stick with nailed on players only during the xmas period

Just going through my 2011/12 season stats compared to 2012/13

Take advantage of DGW\Blank weeks is essential. Because there were so many DGW this past season, there appears to be a 150 pts difference in rank between a score in 2011/12 to 2013

      i.e.
      2200 Pts in 2011/12 received a rank of 4,800
      2200 Pts in 2012/13 received a rank of 13,000

Am I the only person really underwhelmed by the transfers that have happened so far for the Premier League clubs? And I do feel really perplexed by the transfers that have been made such has £30 million Fernandinho, £23 million Jesus Navas all by Man City, silly money! Only one I like is the free transfer of Jose Canas to Swansea 🙂

From a Fantasy view, Canas is no fpl gold at all, although, if he comes cheap, he might go as 5th def, always nailed on, 2-3 points per game (and maybe 1 bonus sometimes) are guaranteed.

I thought that the Navas and Fernandinho transfers were over priced, especially Navas considering Sevillas financial situation but the simple fact of the matter is that Man City have pushed themselves into a position where they'll always have to pay over the odds for players.

As the transfer windows goes on there will be more big signings to come. There are weeks of negotiations ahead so teams wont want to rush things too much.

Just a general query, not a form of confrontation; how come some posts get removed within minutes of being posted?

They are gone before anyone can read them, never mind vote them up or down.

I thought one of the main reasons for the introduction of HomeCrowd was so the users could decide what they liked or disliked?

It's up to us to assess whether we think a comment requires moderation or removal but, more often or not we will leave it and monitor how it develops. Sometimes though, it's pretty clear it's not going to develop in a positive or useful way for the community. We're still finding our feet in terms of moderation - too much, too little - we'll find a good balance.

I think price will determine if he's 'essential' or not because if he costs so much that he's detriment to the rest of your team he'll not be worth it so long as you have a fool proof captain plan.

What are the the things you have always believed about fpl but never tested? I would like to collect a list of hypotheses for testing.

    For instance;

Jussi/Bego rotation doesnt actually represent major benefit points wise.
Big budget defenders represent better value than big budge keepers in the second half of the season.
Strikers are always the best choice for captaincy.

For keepers there's no formula, you have to go with what seems right.
Defence is always more worthy than keepers, due to the attacking threat. For example, would you rather have Howard or Baines? 😛
I found it was midfield for the second half, as the bigger teams (bar Manchester) had their main threats in midfield.

I would like to know if investing in higher priced midfielders is more worthy than investing in higher priced attackers. Basically is a "Power 5" better than a "Power 3"?

Also I'd like to know where the top strikers are in terms of clubs, because perhaps there's a pattern that could be shown which would help

however defenders are more likely to get yellow cards and goal keepers can get save points. for this reason, bego was often a better pick than his defenders as they often didn't get many attacking points but he did quite well getting save points

I believe statements like "I need Chelsea/Liverpool/whichever team offensive coverage" to be misleading.

"Fixtures are a highly accurate predicter for fpl points"

I think Pepin was working on this last I heard. Its one of the holy grails of fpl.

I think he was working against, but the result is the same.

I did some work in January and there didnt appear to be a major correlation except in the case of Liverpool.

I think this one is something that I suffered from last year. Too much focus on fixtures will turn your head away from players with bad fixtures but great form.

one thing I did test, in the days before FFS I had both Boro keepers for the whole season for 4.0, Turnbull & Jones. I thought I was a genius as 1 of them would always play. Didn't work out so well - they got relegated.

Form over Fixtures. When a player is on form stick with him regardless of how tough the fixtures look. I was punished this year for swapping out players like Bale when fixtures looked grim and moving in City players for great fixtures when good players were performing average.

How many of you nutjobs have already made a draft team? (including any possible new big name players)

How many newly promoted players will you go with?

Nope, and at the moment I cant see myself having any promoted players bar the possible 5th mid.

*coughs nervously* No, that would be mad ... *looks at feet*

IF I were to do it, newly promoted players would be bench filler. Maybe Marshall

Can't tell till the fixtures and prices come out.

If RVP 15.0 & Bale 13.0 do they get in your team?

i didnt make draft team but i already know wich strategy i will use

      -ultracheap defence

-arsenal striker (anyone but a giroud)
      -Chelsa striker
-RVP (untill suarez sitting ban out)
      -3/4 big hitters in midfiled

Do you think it is remotely possible to afford Higu/Jovetic RVP Cavani and 3/4 big hitter mid in same team using 100M budget?

If Arsenal bring in a decent striker he's going in my team (fingers crossed for Higuain). The Dutch keeper for Fulham sounds pretty good and he might be cheap given Fulham's lacklustre defence last year.

Do mods have the ability to remove someone's -/+ on a comment, if they think the person voting is spamming or abusing the privilege?

They can neutralise someone so that their spamming +/- has no effect.

I believe that has happened already today

      Sort of.

The system still allows the offender to vote up or down and the offender still sees this on his screen but in the real world, it isn't shown on the real site.
