Pre-Season

Sleeper – Charlie Adam

His debut season in the Premier League will forever live in Fantasy football folklore but ever since that 2010/11 campaign with Blackpool, it’s been all downhill for Charlie Adam. Back then, as the creative hub of Ian Holloway’s promoted side, Adam proved a cut-price phenomenon – with spot-kick and set-piece duties boosting his appeal, the Scot racked up 12 goals, nine assists and 45 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points for a total of 192 points:

Signed by Liverpool after the Tangerines suffered the ignominy of relegation, Adam was then snapped up by Stoke last summer after failing to settle at Anfield. Hopes were relatively high for the Scot’s Fantasy prospects, with his delivery from free-kicks and corners seeming the ideal aerial fodder for the likes of Robert Huth, Ryan Shawcross and Peter Crouch. It’s fair to say it hasn’t quite turned out that way, though – Tony Pulis’ tactics afforded him little license to prosper as a Fantasy force – indeed, towards the end of last term, Adam was fielded as a right winger for the Potters.

Starting only 22 league matches in 2012/13 – with five appearances also off the bench – Adam failed to establish himself as a regular and managed 90 minutes on just five occasions; all too often, he was the victim of his former manager’s tactical tweaks midway through the second-half of matches. Despite producing attacking returns in each of his last three appearances, then, Adam registered just three goals, six assists and five bonus points for a total of 85 points in Pulis’ last term in charge at the Britannia.

The Prospects

With Mark Hughes now installed as the new man in charge at the Britannia, Adam’s prospects suddenly look a little more enticing for the campaign ahead. The Welshman is desperate to address the dire attacking record which saw the Potters score just 34 times last season – the second worst record in the Premier League – and, in addition to restructuring his backroom team, has released seven players as part of a summer clear-out.

The decision to let go long-throw specialist Rory Delap seems somewhat symbolic as Hughes looks to freshen up his options and bring about a more expansive style of play. Crucially, as far as Fantasy managers are concerned, however, the Welshman has talked up Adam as a key component of his side for 2013/14.

“I’m looking forward to working with Charlie day in day out and it will be an exciting time. We’ll get to know each other on a number of levels. I know his quality and he can affect a game in all manner of ways by the strength of his ability. It’s about getting the best out of him and finding the best position for him to be most effective.”

Certainly, for all their work-rate and physical endeavour under Pulis, Stoke severely lacked in creativity. Adam’s six assists was joint-top for the club last term despite the fact he played just 1,758 minutes – having provided a total of 20 assists in his first two seasons in the top-flight, though, his potential for teeing up team mates is obvious. Likely to be installed in the centre of the Potters midfield, Adam’s eye for a killer pass and dead-ball ability may see him once again arrive on our radars – corners and free-kicks look likely, while Fantasy managers will be hoping that Jon Walters’ patchy spot-kick record may persuade Hughes to hand the Scot penalties, too.

Price-wise, Adam looks set to drop across the Fantasy games after the previous term’s disappointment. Initially costing 7.0 in FPL last summer, a slip to 6.5 or even 6.0 will be anticipated – granted, that’s a little too expensive for our cheap fifth midfielder spot but if Hughes can revitalise Adam’s playmaking potential after his recent toils under Pulis, it’s a cost kind enough to consider the Scot as a mid-price option.

Yeah destro > morata. Even if morata doesn't start he'll almost certainly come on and has scored 3 out of 4 of his goals that way so far.

Surely go big or go home means going all out with one team. Your effectivley cancelling out one half of your squad with that selection.

I think it happens when the < is immediately followed by text (i.e. there isn't a space between it and the text that follows). If you insert a space all is fine. The function used to strip HTML trips on that particular case.

    - stays at Liverpool
    - priced 9.5 in FPL
    - 125,000 FPL teams have him GW1
    - 100,000 FPL teams transfer him out GW2 when they realize he's suspended
    - Price drops to 9.2
    - GW6 & GW7 300,000 transfers in
    - Price goes up to 10.0
    - GW7 scores a hatrick, takes his pants off, wears them on his head to celebrate
    - GW7 given 6 week ban

    Sounds about right....

    ROUND 3

Lets try this again - I recently left my old position after 18 months of employment. During these 18 months I contributed to the companies pension scheme. As my time in the company was LESS THAN 3 years i stand to lose my contributions if it is not transferred in three 3months. I have looked into this and the best option is a SIPP. IS that right? Im clueless about this sort of thing. Any help would be appreciated.

always thought you had more control with your money with a SAP as you can invest it multiple things such as property and not just in stocks and shares

For example, buy a property with your pension and rent it out with the funds going directly back into your pension. You get the rent income and still have the resale value of the property in your pension

There are tax benefits with any pension scheme. But a SIPP is generally for experienced investors who know which asset classes they want to invest in, and as a result is likely to be a bit more expensive.

Sounds to me like a stakeholder pension would be best, as a holding position until you can transfer it into your new employer's pension scheme.

Yes, stakeholder pension plan. What pension company does your old company use, surely you can keep it within and carry on contributing or just leave it. It doesn't seem lawful that it has an expiration time.
What are the fees to transfer it over?

How long is your probation? If it's only a few months, could it leave it with your old employer until you are eligible to join the new scheme?

Sounds like a stakeholder pension is best for you, then.

Just be sure not to get a refund from your old employer and then pay it yourself into the stakeholder, because you'll lose the tax benefits. Instead, you should open the stakeholder and then get them to request a transfer of funds from your old employer.

I don't think you can lose your contributions. They may repay your contributions back to you, less any tax relief. And they won't pay you back any matching employer contributions they made.

So it's either get a refund of what you paid, or have it transferred to a new pension, which can be either with your new employer (if you have one), or a SIPP or a stakeholder pension. Probably a stakeholder is better if you're not clued up about pensions or investing.

Are you still employed? Your new employer should offer you a pension scheme (even if it's non-contributory) so you should be able to transfer your contributions to that. Your alternative would be a personal scheme of the nature you mention.

That's true. You would be balls deep in gorgeous shallow women and driving around in sports cars.

One comment about the U21 final, you can't even afford field nine likely playing (and worthwhile) Spanish players. And on a semi-related sidenote, I'm toast if Italy wins that one...

I think if you're as far up the table as you are you've got to back Spain. If it was the other way round you'd go with Morata. I would anyway

Seems we're in line to sign Jerome Thomas, personally don't see how he can keep us in the prem

    (sky sports)
Crystal Palace are in talks with Jerome Thomas about a proposed move to Selhurst Park, Sky Sports can confirm.

The 30-year-old winger is a free agent after parting company with West Bromwich Albion.

After four years at the Hawthorns, the former Charlton winger now looks as if he is on his way back to the capital.

Palace boss Ian Holloway is looking to bolster his squad with Premier League quality ahead of the new season and Thomas fits the bill.

Thomas's agent Tony Finnigan, himself a former Palace player, confirmed to Sky Sports that talks have begun.

"We have held talks with Palace and with co-chairman Steve Parish," Finnigan confirmed.

"They went well and we will be holding another round of talks, at which point we hope a deal can be finalised."

Somebody put up a list of players that were eligible to play in U21s.
Seems he was given the short stick by Hogdson.
Not that he would have whipped up on Spain but its like playing cards and they take away your aces and face cards.

Don't see why the likes of Oxlade-Chamberlain couldn't have played in Brazil as well as for the U21s. It's not like he was overworked during the season.
