Pre-Season

Pre Season Section Now Live

With July now upon us, the Pre-Season section of the site is up and running once again as we edge towards the first batch of friendlies. We’ve collated the current summer schedule for all 20 Premier League clubs and also added links to every article referencing the upcoming season, from Moving Targets to Sleepers, Great Expectations to Scout Reports to Fixture Analysis pieces, in addition to a look back at the three promoted sides displays in the previous campaign.

We’ll be updating the Pre-Season section on a daily basis, adding every article upon publication. Each team also has their own “Scout Notes” and “Form Players” sections – we’ll be scouring the friendlies and, as well as rolling out plenty of Scout Scribbles articles to cover the games, will be using this as a handy one-stop-shop for your guide ahead of next month’s kick-off.

Glad to see that SKY FF have pulled up their socks and upgraded the rules of the game as well as the interface. Of the new additions I like:

    - Keeper points for saves

    - Live scoring will actually work, hopefully

    - Transfers (an additional 10 transfers give you a transfer per week with no limitations on when you use them

I'm not so sure about the option to elect two (C)'s in a given week, I think this will be great for the fantasy football nut (I know, we all are for the most part on here) but it will definitely hurt the more casual gamer who likes to do his team on a Friday night/Saturday morning and leave everybody do their thing that GW.

As it's the first game open this year, I see a fair few people have questions on how it works, I finished just inside the top 100 and I took the following approach:

    (1) Even with additional transfers this year I would set your team up for the season - don't pick a team focused on the first 5 fixtures say, pick a team of known starters where possible because you don't have points hits in SKY FF - the extra transfers will be really handy for DGW's, so, build a team that you hope to have until the end of the season for the most part.

    (2) I found 3-5-2 formation the most beneficial, the bonus points are weighted heavily in favour of midfielders because the likes of Aretea/Fellaini/Hazard/Mata can easily complete 60+ passes in a game (+2 points) as well as making +4 successful tackles (+2), so, use the Members Section here to look at pass/tackle stats.

    (3) Because of the bonus points falling the way they do (more in favour of midfielders), I found spending money on defenders a bit of a waste of time - yes, they get clean sheet points and will get tackle bonus, but, in my view, you are better off paying middle-of-the-range amounts on your defenders. Again, it helps to look at the Members Section here to see how many of the LB's/RB's complete lots of passes and tackle as well as pose a goal threat.

Sorry for the overly-long post, just my initial warbled thoughts.

Was the Sky captaincy rule not like this last year?

There's little opportunity to capitalise on the captaincy switch, because you then have to stick with that captain for the following Saturday before you can switch again. Only very rarely will there be a situation where you can optimise this situation.

No, you only get one change per gw. I made that mistake last year. Moved the armband too early then couldn't change the decision.

Ok, so if you have RVP(c) on a Saturday you could change to Aguero if he's playing on Sunday, but then next GW you have to start with Aguero(c) but can still change it to someone who plays later than him in that GW and then keep the chain going the whole season and get two captains every GW.

Not quite, because City will always play on Sunday, and you'll want to captain RVP vs Palace but he's playing on the Saturday.

Ok so if something like that happened you could chose to just have RVP as your only captain.
But yeah if you plan things well with your captains you can get quite a big advantage over others.

From what I read of the rules you can still change your (c) for the start of the next week, just no more times within that GW.

Doesn't that mean you can always have 2 (c)'s of your choosing each week providing they play on different days?

Could be totally wrong though... 🙂

Yes, theoretically, but the way that fixtures and oppostion fall out it rarely seems to work out that way.

Last season they allowed you a third team after the January transfer window. I took them up on that and though I could be fast and loose with the transfers, but ran up against the monthly limit. That could be why they changed it. I think it allows a more tactical approach.

I think it will encourage cheating, people registering more teams during the season under other names, just to play for the monthly prize.

Pretty spot on. Only thing I dislike is the two captains rule. I like to have my team settled on Fridays so I can go about my weekend without logging on again. This rule requires more hands on management over the weekend.

Yeah I think this could be it, with most other games there is a differentiator, whereas to me Sky always just seemed like a worse version of FPL, albeit with far better prizes that I'd never win anyway...

Last year I had Bale (who is essential in any format of Fantasy Football to be fair), Cazorla (who did well from completed passes and tackle bonus (from time to time)), Fellaini (passes/tackles/goal threat), Michu (passes/goal threat) and I'd like to have the likes of Kagawa this year if he gets games.

I remember last season everyone was convinced Sterling would be benched because of bib theory and Walcott was a massive doubt so I sold Walcott and bought Caz for a 4pt hit. Walcott started upfront and did nothing and Caz still got a hatty. Bought Walcott back next week and got a hatty and two assists 🙂

This article is a solid in depth look at Goalkeepers from last season. Whoever takes the number one shirt from Mignolet could be a great prospect for a budget keeper, particularly in the Sky game with the added goalkeeper bonus points. Westwood coming in at 3.7 and Mannone at 4.2

Looks good apart from Cabral and Tonev.

Not as much value in defenders as midfielders so maybe downgrade Coleman and upgrade one of those 2.

Mulumbu/De Guzman/Lucas/Dembele all worth looking at with the scoring system the way it is.

The new members feature looks at key stat per minute averages and allows for a direct comparison e.g.: show me key attacking indicators 2012/13 vs 2011/12 - this allows you to assess a player's improvement/decline in key stats over a given period (Gameweek range or one season vs another).

Mulumbu is very interesting in this respect - the arrival of Yacob clearly threw off some shackles and helped him improve his attacking play, with a clear decrease in defence stats/duties. We should be launching the feature next week (with a preview movie soon) - take a look at Mulumbu and the West Brom midfield when it goes live.

I don't really agree... 4 out of their first 5 home fixtures are against Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd and the derby, I don't expect them to pick much up in any of those for clean sheets and you can't really rely on them getting many away cleanies.

@Mark/Scouts, is there any way that the stats in the members area could include a customisable gameweek breakdown for whatever stats we want to add? Currently all we have is a set table showing only the ICT numbers. With the Sky game looking a bit better this year would be nice to be able to split out the passes, tackles and saves by gameweek to see how often certain players would have earned their bonuses.

aha, great shout i hadn't spotted that! However, and understandably of course since it wasn't in the rules, there is no data for keepers.

My question should therefore be, any chance the goalkeepers figures could be updated historically to reflected the save bonuses they would have earned?

Yeah, the sky sports tables enable you to assess bonus points over the season or gameweek range.

Having said that, we've had a request to offer a Gameweek breakdown for player stats and I want to add this to the profile pages. Will probably be a mid-season task though - working on other new toys at the moment and almost there with the first one.

Sure...certainly there has been an increase in lengthy posting - clearly some community members are effectively posting articles. This is kind of what I expected and, had we moved to a full forum, I think we'd have seen even more of this.

While I'm really liking this kind of comment posting - I think we'll see a better mix as the weeks roll by. I'm all for Hot Topics that are short and sharp but start good discussions - it's not all about the content of the original post - it's often more about the replies it generates.

I also think the shift in mix of the types of post is good for the community. It prompts people (for whatever reason and motivation) to provide some great insights, analysis and comment and to provoke some great debate. Hot Topics have added an extra value add dimension and some much needed structure to the debates. Without it we just have pages and pages of 'stuff' but now we have a framework of key issues which you flick through. Love it.

Yep...this was the objective and I think it's worked well. Being able to click that tab when I fancy some in-depth and meaty reading/discussion or just browse the comments when I fancy something lighter for five minutes is a real good option.

Of course, sometimes there is a lot more value in the replies than the original post.

I think the articles you guys produce are great and the analysis which some of the posters produce adds great value to the site. I just think (in the past few weeks) people have been trying far too hard to become a hot topic.

HC gives a platform to justify the time and effort to attempt to construct a post of decent content. For many the content is the point and not the associated rep +/-

A lot of us would talk football to a statue, it's why we spend so much time on a football forum. The accusation of 'Trying too hard grows old'
It's disappointing that football related posts on a football forum annoys some people.

    Quick question for you.....

Which Prem teams are most likely to improve on last seasons finishing position in the table and which are most likely to drop like a stone? Useful insight as we have very little team form to use in our thinking when selecting our teams for FPL.

My vote goes to Saints to improve (slight bias...) due to talented midfield, strong defence and money to spend (5th wealthiest club in EPL).

My vote for the team to perform worse would have to go to WBA. Form at the end of last season coupled with Lukaku going and desperate attempt to bring in aging talent (Anelka) tells me they might be a worry this year.

+1 for the Saints. If they manage to bring in Leandro Damiao along with one of Wanyama, Banega & Nainggolan they'll be comfortable in midtable.

I like your defense, I'd keep it like that.

I don't like Aspas. I know nothing about Aspas him but his stats don't look great and he hasn't played in the Premiership before... Better value elsewhere for me.

Ki is a bit of a meh pick too, never really going to do much but what you'd expect for 4.7 I suppose!

What are your thoughts on Swansea's approach to the Europa?

I know their squad is a bit light but they seem to be making quite a few signings. Do you think Laudrup will play his 1st team in the PL and use the Europa for his other players?

Or will he play his big players (Rangel/Williams/De Guzman/Michu) in both and rotate the rest of the positions?

The new signings mostly from La Liga will probably fair well playing in the Europa but I guess the whole team are suited to playing a European style of football (Alan Tate aside).

People owning Michu should get used to him being subbed at ~60 mins before/after Europa league games I'd say. I would have thought Laudrup will take it quite seriously.

Very good point. Even last season we saw Ki, Routledge, Dyer, Pablo coming in and out the team. Add to that Canas, Pozuelo, Shelvey and there is already Britton and De Guzman and you have a recipe for rotation.

It's more the not taking part in a week or so of the preseason when a player like Gibbs who you're fighting for a place with is. That couple of weeks could be the decider for who goes into the season 1st choice...

Anyone know where I can get stats on managers including goals scored & conceded, clean sheets etc?

We could all predict Pulis would get you clean sheets, or big sam, but i'm not so sure on hughes.

Obviously mourinho likes a defensive side, so no worries there, but again, not sure about pellegrini.

Transfermarkt has some manager stats. Here's the page for Mark Hughes, for example:

      http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/mark-hughes/aufeinenblick/trainer_1646.html

If you click through under the 'matches' column, You get further details on every match which he managed, but you would still need to dump this into a spreadsheet and play around with it to get totals for clean sheets etc.

An absolute class signing for them. I expect him to be an FPL force this year. Giroud had an extraordinary amount of chances in the box last year, and you'd expect Huguain to bury many of his chances.
