The Sun Dream Team Returns To The Scout

The Sun Dream Team became the latest Fantasy game to stretch its legs at the tail-end of last week, allowing managers to dabble in team selection ahead of an August 1 registration date.

Dream Team is long established as one of the biggest players in the market, attracting a huge audience wowed by the most substantial prizes on offer in UK Fantasy Football. That’s very much the case again this season, with a huge £500,000 prize pool to be divided up.

Aside from the lure of the prize pot, Dream Team is also a very different Fantasy experience. A more casual, “hands off” game, firm emphasis is placed on your initial starting XI – after this, Fantasy managers are pressed into action during four transfer windows, placed at key points throughout the season. With the domestic cups and European competitions included in the scoring system, however, your team will be serving up points at a higher frequency, holding your interest when games like the Fantasy Premier League and Sky Sports take a break.

We first supported the game back in the 2011/12 season when The Sun rolled out a free version and we’re pleased to see that this is still an option.

You can pick a team for free and compete for reduced prize money, but if you back your knowledge/luck by opting for a Premium Package (two teams for £10 or six teams for £25), you’ll be able to enter more teams and be in the mix to win the full £500,000, whilst also earning the right to compete for the monthly game prizes, which make up £80,000 of the overall prize pot.

You can also register teams once the season gets underway – allowing you to compete for the monthly prizes – a good option if your other Fantasy game lineups have long fallen by the wayside.

The Ruleset

While there are various entry options and more competitions to consider when playing, the basic ruleset remains straightforward.

Each team must include 11 players with a budget of £50 million to spend. The teams can be laid out in one of three formations – a 4-4-2, 4-3-3 or 4-5-1.

Players accumulate points from matches in the Carling and FA Cups and also in Europe, with Champions League and Europa League matches contributing. Straight away, then, it’s clear that avoiding rotation and finding regular starters is a major consideration when it comes to selection.

With Europe and cup progress included as factors, the points scoring can be heavily skewed towards the top clubs. This is compounded by the fact that goals and clean sheets are the major point contributors – notably, players earn nothing for assists.

To balance the lack of assists in the game and to reward performances that don’t qualify for points, Dream Team has its own arbitrary “Bonus Point” scoring system in the shape of the “Star Man” award, which is basically man of the match and earns 5 extra points, while all players who earn 7 or more in The Sun player ratings in a match fetch another 3 points.

We’ll be offering guidance on how this can pan out and we have access to exclusive stats on offer to help underline how much of a factor these scoring methods can be.

The Transfer Windows

Managing your team around the four transfer windows is going to be crucial to your success. You can make up to three transfers per window and it’s a “use them or lose them” policy.

Significantly, the first window arrives on September 4, so with only three league matches down, you can make three changes to your squad. Subsequently, you may look to allow for this in your early strategy, selecting players with a strong opening three fixtures, knowing that you can apply three changes prior to Gameweek 4.

The following window arrives on November 12 – that’s prior to Gameweek 12. The third arrives on January 21, ahead of Gameweek 23, with the final opportunity to make transfers landing on our laps on March 18, just before Gameweek 31.

Planning your team changes, putting our season ticker to use and considering the dates of cup rounds, is therefore an important factor.

Joining Leagues

You can join up to ten leagues with any of your teams and set up your own leagues as you wish. For those thinking of starting up their own league, the Dream Team game offers real incentive to do so – there’s a new Chairman’s prize pool of £10,000 available for those who establish a league with ten or more players. Leagues can be set up from August 1 onwards.

The Scout League

We ran a Dream Team league back in the 2011/12 season and we’ll be doing so again this term. We will bring you details of our league code once its set up.

We’ll also be running some pre-season articles, focusing on the player list and selection strategies and, during the season, we’ll bring you articles to guide selection in the monthly game and the transfer windows. Look out for our first Dream Team article later this week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

i wouldnt say that necessarily, if rvp was 11 then everyone would have him no questions asked. if aguero was 14 no one would have him...but i'm sure plenty will pay 14 for rvp and there are plenty that will pay 11 for aguero.

Might do Aspas instead of Sturridge if he isnt fully fit to start. Leaving me £2.0m in the bank just in case. You never know Aspas might take of and rise like a few last year.

        Suarez will be of.

Its a balanced draft. There is room for little improvements.

Some of the teams I've seen with Bale and van Persie have had another 1 or 2 "big hitters"....the rest of the side is full of promoted team players.

I'd rather have as little money as possible on my bench.
I agree with you that balance is key but I'd rather have the two best and potentially highest scoring players for the season in my team from the off.
For me the balance will be struck in the bargains that pop up around these two players over the course of the season.
I do understand where you're coming from though mate.

Please let me know what you think:

    McGregor and Speroni
    Turner, Hudson, Shaw, Parr, Rat
    Morrison, Bale, Lucas, Mirallas, Hazard
    Sturridge, RVP, Rodriquez

Lucas is back to being fit and Rodgers loves him. Liverpool is looking to play a high line defense, and at 4.5 offers a great increase to his value (just like sterling last year)

I am also looking to make a profit with my goalies., Rodriguez, and Defense. The more money I have the better options I have when I use the wildcard. Thoughts please?

All plans go out the window in the first 2-3 weeks when certain players become essential. most of last seasons top 100 finishers played their wildcard in the first few week. Regardless of how much they cost, if Bale and RVP hit the ground running you will need to get both and fast...planning for quick changes in your team early on is key if you want to retain that wildcard.

Its actually lends argument to the idea of starting with bale and rvp in a way cos....if they work you got them already..if they don't and a few other become "essential" then you can make the changes easily as opposed to have to make a lot of switches...might be a tactic with few to saving the early wildcard in mind...

Unless you hit The top 10k or so arter The first few , wildcard is a good option. You need to catch The risers. If they already Are in Your team -Great - you Are probably High up on The rankings also. The rest 99 - 98 % should WC early imo, to catch up and get those early risers. I Think planning for a WC sonewhere between GW 2 and 4 is a sound strategy. Dont get Players now in Your initial Squad just because they have a decent run from GW 5 to 10..
Thumbs up for early and planned WC from Me.

    Pellegrini: A love of playmakers

The Chilean has constantly put great emphasis on classic playmakers. The Argentinian No10 Andrés D'Alessandro was briefly the hottest property in South American when he thrived under Pellegrini at River Plate, and one of the Chilean's most significant acts at Villarreal was to embrace Riquelme despite his apparent unsuitability for European football, and his lack of impact at Barcelona.

Pellegrini's experience at Real Madrid in 2009-10 was problematic – the £56m signing Kaká was underwhelming and he would probably have preferred the club to keep hold of Wesley Sneijder, who became Europe's most consistently creative midfielder that season. Getting the best from Cristiano Ronaldo became Pellegrini's priority, amongst bitter political squabbles.

His experience at Málaga has been more familiar – Santi Cazorla, who also played under Pellegrini at Villarreal, was his standout performer last season, while Isco has replaced Cazorla superbly. The faith he has placed in Joaquín and Javier Saviola, not playmakers but technical talents previously assumed to be finished at the highest level, shows his love of technical players. David Silva might become an even more pivotal player.

P.S. I have been saying I prefer Silva more than Aguero under Pellegrini and couldn't remember where I had read this. This is an excerpt of the article i read !!!

Nice one Neil, thanks. City's early fixtures couldn't be a better way for Silva to live up to his new gaffer's expectations.

I've just torn my draft team apart to squeeze him in:

      Mignolet • Boruc
      Azpilicueta • Shaw • Coleman • Collins • Faye
      Hazard • Silva • Thomas • Bale • Kagawa
      Giroud • Sturridge • Cornelius

Might find a way to change Giroud into Benteke if he signs for Spurs

He scores goals, bit more pace than Dzeko.

I think Navas might be a good shout for a load of assists but not at the same price as Silva. He didn't score a goal the whole of the last season.

So, with Negredo signed and Jovetic on the way, the question has to be asked? Is owning a City attacker to much of a risk? Is Silva the only safe option

    Currently on

Silva, Theo, Bale (2 x cheapies)
    Lukaku, RvP, J/Rod

But given Lukaku not likely to continue, swapping him for Aspas allows Hazard to join the midfield. City's fixtures look nice, but predicting who will actually start is a problem

the way i look at it is this

would a club as rich as man city spend £25mil on a starting striker? or more to the point would man city go out and buy negredo to improve their team? i think the answers are no and no, just improve their squad. not since villareal and the odd game with real madrid has pelligrini bothered with 2 strikers and for all his failings last season i can't see negredo being the man to push aguero either wide, deeper or to the bench.

as for aguero anywhere else but the number 9, silva is superior to aguero deep, silva is superior to aguero wide left, jovetic would be superior to aguero deep, jovetic would be superior to aguero wide left. all things point to, aguero starter at CF, jovetic starter at LW or in the hole if he joins, negredo cover who may gets starts against the likes of palace, hull and cardiff and dzeko being sold by september 1st

5/6 your balance between mid and forwards is weird IMO. You've got expensive forwards, but I don't think theyre great choices. This means that your midfield is cheap, and again a bit unusual. At this stage I'd go for nailed on players ( not schurrle McLean) and try to get one expensive one cheap mid, rather than two average price ones. Just my two cents
