Scout Report – Alvaro Negredo

City boss Manuel Pellegrini continued his summer of big-money buys yesterday by acquiring Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla. The 27-year-old arrives at the Etihad on a four-year contract for a fee initially believed to be in the region of £16m, with an extra £4m in add-ons. City’s third new signing of the close-season, following the purchase of Fernandinho and former Sevilla team mate Jesus Navas, the Negredo deal preceded the arrival of Stevan Jovetic as Pellegrini sets about restructuring his options up front

The History

A product of the Rayo Vallecano youth academy, Negredo racked up 14 goals in 15 appearances for the club’s B team in 2004/05 and, subsequently promoted to the senior side, notched once in 12 matches in the same season. Snapped up by Real Madrid in the summer of 2005, the forward spent two years at the Bernabeu but failed to make a single La Liga appearance – demoted to the B team, he notched 22 times in 65 matches before Almeria came calling in July 2007.

Installed as a first-team regular, Negredo immediately displayed his clinical eye for goal, with 12 strikes and four assists in 36 appearances over his first year with his new club. Stepping up another level the following term, he notched 19 goals and five assists in just 34 matches before Madrid exercised a buy-back clause in the summer of 2009. Rather than hand him a chance to nail down a starting berth, Madrid simply sold the forward to Sevilla for a healthy profit.

Over three seasons at Sevilla, Negredo established himself as one of the most lethal frontmen in Spanish football. His first two seasons harvested 34 goals and 11 assists in just 68 appearances before he notched an impressive 25 goals and four assists from 36 matches in 2012/13 – the fourth highest strike rate in La Liga last term, behind Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao. Negredo ended his Sevilla career with a bang, firing all his side’s goals in a 4-3 win over Valencia. On the international stage, he has struggled to nail down a regular role – from 14 appearances, he has managed to find the net six times.

The Prospects

While the arrival of Fernandinho and Navas will inject pace and dynamism to the City first-team, Negredo’s role will be that of penalty box predator under Pellegrini. His scoring record stands testament to the Spaniard’s ability to turn half-chances into goals and, standing six foot one, his aerial threat could thrive as City seek to utilise the flanks more often this season after a somewhat one-dimensional approach in Roberto Mancini’s last term at the helm.

Fielded as the main forward in a 4-2-3-1 system by Sevilla, Negredo is clearly capable of leading the line alone. Compared with Sergio Aguero and Jovetic, he’s more of a traditional type of centre-forward and seems best-suited to be utilised in the advanced role if Pellegrini is looking for a more powerful option up top. As mentioned in the Moving Target piece on Pellegrini, though, he has a tendency to pick his side in accordance with opponent – indeed, it may transpire that the versatile Aguero’s ability to tuck in behind a lone forward or lead the line effectively may still make him the best bet for regular game time.

Certainly, the new boy’s arrival doesn’t bode well for Edin Dzeko – the Bosnian appeared to have moved up the pecking order after Carlos Tevez left for Juventus but is a little too similar in stature to be fielded alongside Negredo, with the latter’s strong work-rate, superior mobility and intelligent movement inside the box also in his favour. The Spaniard is also likely to challenge to the position of number one spot-kick taker; a factor that would certainly boost his appeal from a Fantasy perspective.

Having managed just 66 goals in Mancini’s last season, City’s main attacking assets have suffered a drop in price across the Fantasy games. The likes of Aguero comes in at 11.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but is expected to benefit from Pellegrini’s more offensive style of play after notching just 12 times in 2012/13. While Negredo won’t be priced as low as Dzeko’s 7.5, an initial cost of around 9.5 could be on the cards and with home games against Newcastle and Hull, in addition to a trip to Cardiff in the opening three Gameweeks, City look primed for early-season investment.

Undoubtedly, a regular role at the head of his side’s attack would see many clamber aboard the Negredo bandwagon but with the forward options available to Pellegrini increasing significantly, it may well be déjà vu all over again, with many opting for the midfield security offered by Silva instead. Fantasy managers will be keenly assessing the pre-season situation for any indications – with a handful of friendlies still to follow, the picture will hopefully be a little clearer as we edge towards the new campaign’s kick-off.

Yes, Welbeck up front. Score is currently 2 nil to man u, welbeck and Lingard. Zaha is playing well and I think he could be a good prospect for right wing. Evra and jones playing well with quite a lot of goal threat from up the middle and on corners.

Why i wont have Hazard , GW2 at Man u followed by a blank, means he likely to fall in price even if he has attacking points GW1
Foolish to include a player you will be forced to transfer out imo , especially as there willbe bandwagons elsewhere that need jumping on

    Boruc, Speroni
    Mertesacker, Coleman, Rat, Turner, Clyne
    Bale, Hazard, Coutinho, Wanyama, Thomas
    RVP, RVW, Cornelius

The keepers rotate, the latter 3 defender rotate, Wanyama and Thomas are two rotating mids for 9.5, happy days 🙂 Should never really require a bench with anyone more then 5m on it 🙂

For those wondering what will happen in Chelsea's defence this season...

Jose: ‘For me, Luiz is a central defender. He can help the team playing in another position but he’s a central defender, no doubt about it. I know Ivanovic is very comfortable in the center but I see him and Cesar Azpilicueta as our two right backs. Our defensive group will be good.’

Cahill for 6m anyone? No. Fair enough.

Jose on Terry: ‘He’s not safe and he knows he’s not safe. The only thing he knows is safe is our friendship, our relationship. Professionally, nobody is safe. Friends are friends but this is a business. I know he’s a very good player, but he has to prove himself like everybody else.’

‘I have spoken to John. John has to work hard, give everything and the club will arrive at a conclusion. He loves the club. But he has to play completely free of that. I’m sure he’s able to do that, like Frank Lampard did.’

Sounds like he needs to work for it!

Trying to fit Walcott, Hazard and Bale into a team seems to be a common concern. I am currently rethinking getting Hazard from the start. While he is undervalued his presence in my team is affecting its overall quality. His fixtures post Hull are shocking + blank and if there is no double is it worth ignoring him for a while ? I am stuck with Morrison and Jrod who could be very difficult to get rid of when their fixtures turn as there are no alternatives at 6m. It has knock on effects too I can get Krul instead of the budget pairing Mannone and Boruc I can get Brady instead of Thomas etc.

    1st half analysis.

Zaha looks a real threat good few balls in to the box, linking up well with Rafael.
Lingard playing well, composed finish after a Danny Welbeck dummy.
Jones looking sharp with good last ditch defending.
Welbeck, Lingard and Giggs linking well for the 2nd.
Lindegaard with nothing major to deal with.
Evra had 3 chances from corners in the first 15 minutes, Giggs taking all 3.

If Bale moves to Man Utd does that mean that it makes them more necessary because they're more of an attacking threat or less necessary because they'll be sharing the points? I'm guessing less because at their prices you'd want them selfishly gobbling up the points?

Chelsea's potential DGW fixture is 4 weeks away now.

What is the minimum amount of notice the EPL must give before announcing a fixture?

Surely they are required at least 2 weeks for ticket sales, H&S precautions, travel...

No matter what I do, having Aguero instead of Silva messes up the balance of my team. Having Aguero means I'll have to start JRod away to West Brom in gw1 which would be pure meh. But having Silva means I can start 7 forwards/mids that I'm very happy with and bench JRod.

    Anyone else having this problem?

GW1 is so far away, I'ld rather focus on preseason training. I don't want to wear my players before GW1 even starts. I've done a little preparation for GW1: will put Gerrard out on the pitch but rest him on the bench for GW2 against Aston Villa so his old man calves don't give up on him against Manchester United GW3. It's the little things like these that separate a good fantasy football manager from a bad fantasy football manager.

    1. Lukaku is in providing Chelsea fail to sign another striker.
    2. Gayle is simply a gamble. Nobody else in my leagues will pick him! (Think Andy Johnson in 04/05)
    3. I have 3.5 in the bank - Lukaku can easily be upgraded to anyone other than RVP

    Boruc / Sczeszny
    Connolly / Turner / Coleman / Parr / Chester
    Bale / Walcott / Hazard / Kackaniclic / Brady
    RVP / Bony / Gayle

Don't know much about the promoted teams and I have a bunch of them, not sure about the budget defence, and I really wanted Benteke instead of Gayle but it was impossible to save enough cash elsewhere for it. Think the defence is far too cheap?

    pros:

    good age
    very much a number 9
    penalty taker
presumably the easier the fixture the better chance he has of playing
flat-track bully (can be good for FPL, predictability of returns etc)

    cons:

    doesn't assist.
sevilla's penalty taker so goal threat looks bigger than it actually is (unless of course he goes on to take pens for man city).
no one missed more clear cut chances in europe's top 5 leagues last season.
that valencia final day blitz was very much the exception, he mops up against lower ranked teams.
torres is preferred to him for spain, torres, fernando torres.
no positional flexiblity (cuts down other avenues into the starting lineup

That stat about the most clear cut opportunities really needs to be stopped. He is a poacher, so he's more likely to get more clear cut chances, so therefore more likely to miss more clear cut chances. Hernandez, given the same amount of starts would have similar stats I'm sure.

still dont get why so manny people have Kone in their drafts

Jelavic is way better striker than him

i know that he had terrible season last year but if he gain some confidence he could go on big streak and score around 20 goals in season

aslo Cro media says that if he wont be sure starter that he will leave Everton cause he dont have inttention to warm bench

He also said that he is very confident in his own abilities and that he is not afarid of Kone and that he will trying as hard as ever cause he wanna be in good form for upcoming WC next year and he wanna be Mandzukic partner in our national squad

if he leaves that means that Kone is brilliant pick , i rate both as great players and would like to start season with guy who will be asured of starts

          Last seasons conversion rate,
          Benteke, 26%
          RVP 22%
          Bale 16%
          Suarez 16%
On this you are way off the mark, a player who will get even better. The only way you score 19 goals in the PL in a terrible team is because of a high level of ability.

Read it and take your point, however teams of the status of Utd should by a true winger rather than convert a striker to that position because of negative reasons. On a list of top wingers where would Welbeck sit?

Teams have sussed Jelavic. Has nothing else to his game other than score goals which he completely lost last season, he's a very limited player so I don't know how you can say, without seeing it through Croatian tinted goggles, he is way better than Kone.

People think Kone will be the starter considering the manager has signed him twice now. So surely you can see why people have picked him as you say at the end he will be a brilliant pick if he starts, so obviously the people picking him will think he'll start.

I said after the first pre-season game, against the tide of criticism, that Welbeck would have a good season this year. He is the type of hard working forward that Moyes loves and he has already singled him out for praise.

I am taking this goal in a meaningless friendly against a bunch of nobodies as proof I am probably right.

    Terry/Azpi - Koscielny - Collins - Clyne - Chester

Walcott - Mirallas - Nolan - Hazard - Ben Arfa

    Aguero - Sturridge - Anelka.
