Scout Report – Nacer Chadli

Tottenham confirmed their second deal of the summer transfer window on Sunday, with the acquisition of Nacer Chadli from Dutch club FC Twente. The versatile 23-year-old Belgian joins up at White Hart Lane on a five-year contract for a fee in the region of £7m and follows Paulinho to the club, as Andre Villas-Boas bolsters his midfield options for the season ahead.

The Spurs boss was clearly delighted to announce the deal yesterday, with the new boy already joining his team mates for training ahead of tomorrow’s Barclays Asia Trophy match against Sunderland in Hong Kong:

“Nacer Chadli is a player that we have been following for quite some time and we managed to strike the deal in these last days. So we’re pretty happy. As a player he is extremely versatile, playing different positions up front. He has played with tremendous success on the left for Twente as a winger and as an attacker for Belgium.”

The History

Chadli’s youth career spanned across three Belgian clubs, including Standard Liege, but his big break arrived in 2007 courtesy of Dutch second division outfit AGOVV Apeldoorn. He spent a total of three seasons at the club and, having produced 11 goals and nine assists over 52 appearances in his first couple of years, stepped up a level with 17 goals and 11 assists from 37 games in 2009/10.

Snapped up by FC Twente in the summer of 2010, Chadli immediately became a key member of the first-team. His first two years at the club harvested 13 goals and 11 assists from 56 Eredivisie matches before he once again improved during his third season, with 12 goals and five assists from 26 games (including play-off matches). The Belgian also chipped in with six goals and six assists in 10 Europa League matches in 2012/13, a sign of his flourishing eye for goal. On the international stage, Chadli has turned out for his country on 14 occasions and has found the net twice.

The Prospects

Predominantly right-footed, Chadli’s adaptability means he can be fielded anywhere across the forward line, though his preferred position is on the left as an inverted winger, cutting inside onto his stronger foot. Standing six foot two, his strength, pace and trickery down the flank, allied with a penchant for a long shot, could well see the Belgian quickly nail down a starting role in Villas-Boas’ first-team.

Far more significantly, his acquisition could be key to how we assess Gareth Bale’s likely position in the season ahead. The signing of Paulinho earlier this summer had suggested Villas-Boas was primed to move to a 4-3-3 with the Welshman on the flank but it now seems more likely that Chadli’s arrival will ensure Bale remains in the central slot behind a lone forward in a 4-2-3-1. Villas-Boas has utilised the likes of Clint Dempsey, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lewis Holtby on the left last term in order to play Bale in “the hole” but none of the trio offered the speed of Bale or, indeed, Aaron Lennon on the opposite flank – a problem for Villas-Boas, given how crucial the idea of quick transitions are to his tactical approach.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, it’s likely that Chadli will come in around the 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – putting him on a par with Lennon and Dempsey, and just slightly more than Sigurdsson and Paulinho at 7.0 apiece. Providing Bale keeps the central role, the Welshman looks almost essential after racking up 14 sets of double figures last time out but a hugely enticing run of fixtures could also bring the Belgian into contention from the off. With Palace, Swansea, Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa and Hull in seven of the first nine Gameweeks, doubling up on the pair could be a viable tactic for those who feel the idea of “coverage” is somewhat over-rated.

Chadli's a very good player - it would be interesting to see what would happen to Bale if he plays in his preferred position on the left flank.

I think they will play him permanently in the 'VDV' role. More attacking responsibility, less running around/ shooting crosses into the box.

Robert Snodgrass has been selected by 15% of FF Managers so far, and at £6.5m, justifiably so. However, anybody scratching around for more money to invest in the rest of their squad might do well to consider Anthony Pilkington.

Costing £5.5m, and so far attracting the attention of just 1.6%, Pilkington lost the best part of two months last season due to hamstring injuries. If he can keep clear of them this season, then he might prove great value.

He scored a point at just under every 21 minutes of game time last season, Snodgrass scored a point every 20 minutes. The season before, Pilkington scored a FF point every 17.5 minutes of game time.

Elliot Bennett and Nathan Redmond will be competing for the wide berths, but Pilkington and Snodgrass will likely be at the front of the queue.

There's such a groundswell of popular opinion in favour of Snodgrass round here that I've kind of just gone along with it and he's flirting with the edges of my squad but I must confess he's never captured my imagination. Such a dull pick.

While I don't have him, 152 points last season should have seen him priced around 0.5-1M more than he is. Only midfielder in the top 10 last season below 8m too.

Yeah, and I've heard all the arguments and I can see the logic, it's just depressing seeing him in my team for some reason. A bit like Walters a couple of years ago - got me loads of points but still wanted him out of my team as soon as possible!

Pilkington is more likely 1.6% because he has slipped off the radar - nobody at this stage can really predict the first team line-ups.

There is a good chance that teams will work Snodgrass out this season. He is heavily left-footed, and you will rarely see him try to cross a ball with his right foot, let alone shoot with it.

Pilkington takes a corner with either foot and probably has a better eye for goal than Snodgrass. Hughton would be foolish not to start matches with Pilkington.

    I don't think it's as clear-cut as 4-2-3-1 OR 4-3-3.

I think they'll both be used at different occasions and you'll see players play in a variety of positions. Also expect a lot more rotation this year. Chadli is more suited to a left-wing 4-3-3 role with Bale on t'other side than Lennon is for example.

A very good point was made in this article, is coverage overrated? Do people feel the need to have a United player purely because they are champions, or City because they spent loads of money?

It's probably best in my opinion to pick players on ability first, such as attacking potent, rather than thinking "I dont have a City player yet, better get Silva then".

Just because a team is winning doesn't mean they are going to get a lot of nice FPL points for you. For example United, in the attack it was only RvP people were comfortable with, correct? However, if people had known United would finish 1st beforehand without knowledge of scorers, a lot would've justified Nani/Valencia/Kagawa as being essential.

    Just my 2 cents.

      Coverage is risk diversification.
When there are several equally strong teams with equally good fixures you don't know which one will prosper more than others in any given GW. Coverage ensures that you don't put all your eggs in one basket.
But your point is valid. One needs to get only viable fantasy football options, not just any player from a certain team.

Agreed it can be done to soften the blow of one team doing particularly well, however people justifying having Silva instead of Walcott purely because they have Giroud is nonsense, as most agree that Walcott has greater potential to score big.

I'm not against getting coverage if the fantasy prospects are good, but it won't sway me to get players that are less viable.

I see what your saying, but cover often translates to big points.

Forexample, hypotetically, mufc have palace hull and cardiff at home over 4 weeks. You must assume united will score most goals (and cumulative fpl points) over these games, so cover may be essential in that case.

But, hypothetically, if you were to choose between Walcott and Hazard or Mata and Kagawa, are you going to choose the latter because there's a Man Utd player? Or will you choose the former because there are 2 very good players with high scoring chances, as opposed to 1 definite front line attacking midfielder?

I'd choose who I think will get most points over next 4-6 weeks, and this is based on both fixtures and form.

I wouldn't sell Walcott because I want a man united player for 'coverage', I'd sell him if I thought Kagawa was gonna score more points.

You casn't cover all th bes teams if you want quality, £100m is way too short.

Someone said Silva is more consistent. Totally untrue going by last season. Sulva is cleary a better player than Walcott in real life but in fpl I think Walcott will score more and have more attempts.

And if you don't buy the ticket....

I hate the "Walcott (or Bale) is too inconsistent" argument against him. I wish FPL showed points im each game over the last 2 years because I posted several times that, from an FPL point of view, it is a complete myth. But a few people say it so it catches on.

            Silva is more consistent.

Silva is only more consistent as he's shit. The line appears straighter as the games above 2 are less above 2 than those of Bale and Walcott.

              Thanks GW and Gink

Silva is consistent but that works against him. He is normally a 5-8 pointer when he does well. Walcott/Bale are similar in that they can get 5-8 pointers consistently (Walcott mostly, as Bale was going crazy) but also get a few double figure hauls on the way.

I was wondering why Jay Rod is getting so much hype so I did a bit of research for myself.

After GW23 (when Pochettino took over)

    *******Jay Rodriguez:*******

    6 Assists
    6 Bonus Points

    29 Points off Minutes
    16 Points off Goals
    18 Points off Assists
    6 Bonus Points
    3 Yellow Cards

66 Total Points (GW 23-38) for 4.125 PPG

    *******Rickie Lambert: *******

    88 Minutes per Game

    16 Bonus Points

    32 Points off Minutes

    2 Yellow Cards

78 Total Points (GW 23-38) for 4.875 PPG

Shinji Kagawa surprised a few people last week when he was quoted as saying on Japanese television: „For me personally it wasn't a good season. If Dortmund agrees, I'd like to go back there one day.“

Dortmund's CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke was inevitably asked about this and replied today: "The door is always open for Shinji. But at the moment it's not an issue."

Kagawa's agent was a little more mischievous, however: "As things stand, I presume that Shinji will be staying in Manchester. But nothing is out of the question in football."

    http://bit.ly/164N2lA

I'm sure that Kagawa will be staying in Manchester this season, but Moyes needs to use him effectively, i.e. in a central advanced position.

Before going to United Moyes spoke of his liking of German football and desire to one day manage a Bundesliga team. He surely would have seen Shinji playing for Dortmund during both their title winning campaigns, and been suitably impressed by his clear quality in "the hole".
He knows where to play him to get the best from him.

They played Vietnam and an 'Indonesian Dream Team'. When a team scores 7 goals you kinda expect the striker to bag a few. He won't do it in the prem, hence why Arsenal are looking for a new striker..

Doing it in France / against pre-season pub teams isn't the same as doing it in the Prem. Could be a good choice or he could just turn back into last year's Giroud as soon as the season starts.

Anyone who's looking to play 3-5-2, may I ask what your midfield is?

    Currently on Bale-Hazard-Coutinho-Mirallas-Snodgrass.

Looking at the first 6 or 7 fixtures.

    A) Sturridge & Nolan
    B) Negrado & Cabaye
    C) Start with A then move to B gw2 for a hit

Really can't fit any in. If bale goes to Real it will be a whole lot easier but don't want to sacrifice Bale, Walcott or RVP for Silva or Aguero

      JRod and Berba

There is no 4.5 striker even likely to start

Chadli is a very nice player and only strengthens the Midfield at Spurs, which will then strengthen the Forwards. Which looks to be Bale and Adebayor/New Signing.

But it also tells us that AVB will likely implement a LOT of rotation in the MF and really, no one is all that attractive other than Bale.

We can see how the season progresses, who's in form, etc. But stay far away from Spurs MF, other than Bale, for now!

    Is this crazy talk?

Hazard is owned by 23.2% and has Hull/United/Blank. Can anyone else see a mass selling frenzy after Hull, meaning the clever ones among us could pick him up for 9.0 to 9.2 in GW5 (GW4 transfer is for RVP 🙂 )

Not if he gets double figures against Hull - the masses will bring him in without checking the fixtures inflating his price. If we're lucky they'll still be active in GW3/4 and will drop him after his 1, 0 scores and we can get him at 9.5 🙂

I plan to get him GW4 or 5 for sure, just not worked out how I'm gonna work him in yet. That should become clearer later on.

It he blanks against Hull, perhaps. He wont drop in price if he does anything and it's not as if he os a guaranteed 2 points against Man United either!

Think GW got this one right. He will probably rise in the first GW to fall back to 9.5 after the blank
