Scout Reports

Scout Report – Gary Hooper

Norwich boss Chris Hughton made his seventh signing of the summer transfer window earlier today by acquiring long-term target Gary Hooper from Glasgow Celtic. The 25-year-old arrives at Carrow Road on a three-year deal – though the club have the option of another year – for a reported fee of around £5m and follows the likes of Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, Nathan Redmond, Leroy Fer and Martin Olsson to the club as Hughton looks to push on from last season’s eleventh place finish.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Hooper revealed his determination to prove himself in England’s top-flight after a highly successful stint at Parkhead under Neil Lennon:

“There’s been a lot of speculation going back to January and I’m pleased to have finally put pen to paper and joined Norwich. I can’t wait to get down to work, to get training with the lads and working with the coaching staff. I knew Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood from my youth days at Spurs so it will be great to be back working with them in the Premier League. I have scored goals at every level I have played at and the challenge of playing in the Premier League is really exciting to me.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Hooper was released by the north London club at the age of 14 back in 2002. His career got underway at Conference club Grays Athletic but, after scoring 20 times in 69 appearances, he was released again in the summer of 2006. Picked up by Southend United, he scored just twice in 32 appearances over two years and was farmed out on loan to Leyton Orient (four games, two goals) and Hereford United (19 matches, 11 goals) before Scunthorpe paid £175,000 for his services in July 2008.

Hooper’s eye for goal was instantly in evidence for Scunthorpe. A total of 24 goals in 45 league appearances in 2008/09 saw him voted Player of the Year and helped earn the club promotion to the Championship. The goals flowed once again the following season, with 19 strikes and six assists in 35 matches persuading Celtic to shell out over £2m in the summer of 2010.

Hooper wreaked havoc in his new surrounds and was the Hoops’ top scorer in each of his three seasons at Parkhead. In just 95 league appearances, he registered an eye-catching 63 goals and 24 assists, helping the club to a couple of league titles, with two Scottish Cups also accrued.

The Prospects

Having watched his side suffer back-to-back 1-0 pre-season friendly losses, Hughton has moved quickly to address a lack of attacking edge. While Norwich were decent defensively from a Fantasy perspective last term, chalking up 10 clean sheets, a 4-4-1-1 formation failed to harvest many goals – the Canaries found the net on just 41 occasions, a tally better than only Stoke (34) and relegated QPR (30).

The earlier arrival of Van Wolfswinkel had suggested Hughton would continue with his somewhat cautious approach and roll out a lone striker system once again but Norwich’s pre-season failings have perhaps led to a change of heart. Certainly, with over £13m spent on the pair, it’s fair to assume Hooper will now be expected to line up alongside the Dutchman in a 4-4-2, potentially handing Fantasy managers greater options amongst the Carrow Road squad.

Although the former Celtic star is a little more diminutive than Van Wolfswinkel (five foot nine to six foot one), Hughton’s new forwards have relatively similar attributes – both possess good movement in the box and a penchant for playing on the shoulder of the last defender – though Hooper’s renowned work ethic and link-up play may see him drop deep more often, with his unselfishness highlighted by that average of eight assists per season at Celtic.

Yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, a price of around 6.5 or 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems on the cards, bearing in mind that Van Wolfswinkel will set you back 7.0, whilst key creative force, Robert Snodgrass, is available for 6.5.

Hooper’s addition to the Canaries ranks now gives Fantasy managers something of a dilemma. While Snodgrass dominated the scene last term, there are now further options as we consider a kind batch of opening fixtures which has Hughton’s side play host to Everton, Southampton and Villa in the opening five Gameweeks, in addition to a trip to Hull. Given his eye for goal, Hooper looks a more than viable target as we assemble our squads ahead of the season kick-off, with his arrival sure to bolster the Canaries chances of improving upon last term’s dire scoring record.

I'm a Hereford United supporter. We had Hoops on loan in the second half of 2007-08 season and he made a massive impression. I was amazed when Southend released him and hugely disappointed when we weren't able to bag him permanently.

I don't blame him for spurning QPR to give it a shot in the Prem, even if it is "only" Norwich. I've always felt he could do a job there and I'm confident he will. In fact, I strongly fancy him to be this season's Marcus Stewart or Rickie Lambert, two other players whose careers I followed closely from the lower leagues upwards.

In other words, I'll be getting him in 🙂

Hi guys - anyone considering Weimann as their Villa coverage instead of starting off with JRod?

Makes it much easier to fit RVP back in afterwards...

    Mig / Lewis

    Mert / Ivanovic / Murner / Clyne / Burner

    Bale / Haz / Snod / Mirallas / Thomas

    Lukaku / Giroud / Weimann

    3.0m in bank...

(Swop Ivanovic for Chester and Weimann to RVP for 4point hit after GW 1)

That's what I had originally - but if RVP goes nuts vs Swansea and everyone tries getting him it will take an 8 point hit to get him in rather than 4... Do you think that's worth it just to have Benteke in?

but even with the 3.0 in the bank it makes no odds. Ivan to Chester = 2.5, plus the 3 million you already have = 5.5

Weimann to RvP requires 8 million

Sorry - made a mistake on here... It would have to be Ivanovic to Chester and Giroud to RVP. Frontline for GW2 would then be RVP / Lukaku (who I think could get something ManU if he plays) and Weimann. Weimann would eventually become JRod (after GW3 probably so no hits involved) and Hazard ---> Theo in time for GW3...

I'd consider ditching but would wait for closer to kick off for indications of the expected lineup and which striker was ahead in the pecking order.

          GW4 I think

I'm loathe to go without him but having 3x Chelsea for the DGW makes it nigh on impossible

So it's RvP for 90 v Swans or Lukaku for 120+

Yeah no RVP to start with, not now the DGW happened.

          Boruc Mannone
          Luiz Turner Clyne Chester Parr
          Bale Silva Walcott Hazard Thomas
          Sturridge Lukaku JRod

Then GW2 remove Luiz for Mert/Kos/Nasty and maybe -4 Lukaku -> Berbatov

If I stick to my GW2 changes, that would free up 1-1.5m.

Then RVP can replace Studge by downgrading a 9+ MF to a 5/5.5m MF who stands out.

Also, I'm usually a GW3 WC-er, so I have that in my back pocket if need be. 😉

I think with their fixtures it's easier to swallow. Finding that right balance at the start is difficult, with no form to go on.

I'd find your best mix, believe in it, knowing we're all starting in the same boat. Then the hard work begins!

VILLA (4-3-3): Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Luna; Bacuna, El Ahmadi, Westwood; Agbonlahor, Benteke, Weimann

VILLA (After 60 mins): Steer, Herd, Donacien, Baker, Bacuna, Helenius, Delph, Sylla, Robinson, Gardner, Carruthers.

    Almost full-strength for Villa.

    A few notes:

    1) Vlaar + Clark again - no Baker with Vlaar. Clark ahead of Baker?

I am thinking of going for Berbatov instead of Lambert.

Here is how they both performed last season:

Lambert: 15 goals, 8 assists, 32 bonus points and 3126 minutes played. 187 pts total

Berbatov: 15 goals, 4 assists, 28 bonus points and 2844 minutes played. 163 pts total

Berbatov has more points per minute than Lambert.

Also, Rodriguez is such a good option at 6m.

    What do you guys think?

On Robert Snodgrass (and other uninspiring prospects)

From what I saw of his scoring last season, Snodgrass is a player who gets a goal or assist every now and again, but nothing spectacular. Whilst scoring regular points is nice over the season, its really not that much use in this game as you can almost always find someone who's on better form in the short term.

So if you take such a player from the start, what are you going to get? A goal and assist and a few boni over the first 5 gws. Gives you say 4 ppg, which is OK, but would you really care if you hadn't bought him? All that will happen is that you'll either sell him after a couple of weeks for the latest budget bandwagon, or you'll sit on him for those regular 4 ppg whilst his price drops as other people sell him.

So rather than buying a nice safe option, it seems much better to me to go for a more risky explosive option. If it works out; great. If not, you'll be making a transfer whatever and you've missed out on nothing more than a few steady points.

The thing with Snodgrass is though, think about who Norwich had up front last season. Now look at who they up front this season

If you look at the top midfielders from last season Sndgrass is about 2m cheaper than all the midfielders that got similar points though.

He played a lot of games though. Only comes out at 4.2 ppg, which is pretty meh.

He's presently my cheapest mid so I'd take that.

Very interesting point. For me, I like to have some steady earners in the team so I don't have to follow form on everyone. Call it the Sean Maloney syndrome. But equally you have to ask why you play the game: to win, obviously, but also to have fun, and there's nothing better when your explosive punt pays off...

Completely agree. This is a great example of where a safe but average player is heralded rather than taking a punt.

Jarvis, Bellamy, Wanyama, Adam. Even as I am listing these they are not exciting me... Maybe the real issue is that there are no standouts for that price? I woul rather invest in 3 heavy mids and rotate 2 cheapies I think.

this qualifies as a decent team?
    2nd RMT of the season
    Mignolet
    Terry / Collins / Zabaleta
    Silva / Hazard / Jarvis / Bale
    Aguero (vc) / Rodriguez / Lukaku (c)

    Harper / Turner / Thomas / Chester

or i need to spread a little bit?

Another thing. I reckon that Fletcher could be a decent option once he is fully fit, if he is lone striker in a much more attacking looking Sunderland team. Altidore missed 3 or 4 chances against Spurs that Stevie would have put away all day long.

Wasn't that the game Altidore played after finding out his biggest mentor died? Not a hugeee factor in why he probably didn't play well, but its something to consider.

Yeah but you seem to be forgetting that a transfer is a valuable commodity in the game. Having a player that is consistently getting you points even though it's not flashy is invaluable since you can just have him sitting in your team and not waste transfers.
