Friendlies Round-Up – Monday

United end their tour of Asia with a comprehensive win as Jesse Lingard gets amongst the goals once again. Markus Rosenberg and Nicolas Anelka maintain their recent scoring form as West Brom pick up another victory, while Hull edge past Peterborough thanks to a long-range effort from Maynor Figueroa. Elsewhere, Steven Fletcher may miss the start of the season for Sunderland and Roberto Martinez talks up the prospects of Nikica Jelavic for the campaign ahead after the Croatian bagged a brace in a weekend win at Blackburn:

Kitchee 2 Man United 5
David Moyes rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for United’s final match in Asia yesterday afternoon. With Jonny Evans missing out due to an ankle injury, the likes of Chris Smalling, Michael Keane and Fabio were handed a starting berth in an experimental line-up at the back, while further up the field, Wilfried Zaha and Ashley Young took the flank roles on either side of Danny Welbeck. The latter opened the scoring with his third pre-season strike before Smalling and Fabio added a goal apiece before the break. Moyes made six changes over the course of the second period and saw two of his subs combine for the fourth after Alexander Buttner teed up Adnan Januzaj before Jesse Lingard grabbed the visitors’ final goal, taking his tally for the summer to four – more than any other United player.

Speaking to United TV after the match, Smalling revealed he was determined to nail down a regular role under the new manager after starting just 10 times in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year in charge:

“Last season was a very frustrating one so it is nice to be involved with pre-season because I didn’t get that last time and I am feeling good. The more games, the better. It was nice to pop up with a goal too. But to be fair, I probably should have got a hat-trick. Hopefully, I will get more chances like that. I was waiting for it (the goal), I have been due one because I didn’t get too many last season. Hopefully, I will be able to get a few more this season and chip in a little more.”

Elsewhere, Moyes was given an injury boost after Nemanja Vidic, Nani and Antonio Valencia returned to action for a United XI against Crewe last night. The trio had failed to take part in the pre-season tour but are now stepping up their respective recoveries – Valencia played the full 90 minutes, while Vidic and Nani were afforded just over an hour apiece, with the latter notching both goals in a 2-0 win.

Peterborough 0 Hull 1
Steve Bruce’s side registered their first win in four attempts yesterday evening. The Tigers boss continued with a 3-5-2 and shifted Maynor Figueroa to the left of midfield, whilst drafting in his son, Alex, to join James Chester and Curtis Davies in the back-three – the former Wigan man vindicated his manager’s decision to move him to a more advanced berth by notching the only goal of the game with a spectacular 25-yeard strike. Danny Graham was partnered by Sone Aluko up top but failed to notch before making way in one of seven second-half changes by the visitors. From an offensive point of view, the Tigers are still struggling and have scored just twice in the last four games (with one coming from the spot), though Bruce’s side have registered three clean sheets across that quartet of fixtures.

West Brom 3 Atromitos 1
Steve Clarke made eight changes from the side that saw off Derby at the weekend. Yet again, the Baggies boss altered his starting formation and moved from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3, with Saido Berahino, Markus Rosenberg and Shane Long leading the line as Nicolas Anelka dropped to the bench. With his side a goal down at the break, the Baggies boss made just two alterations, sending on James Morrison and Anelka, and the latter needed just 10 minutes to bring the hosts level with his third goal in as many matches. Rosenberg continued his strong summer form by teeing up Berahino to fire the Baggies in front before scoring his side’s third, taking his tally to four over five pre-season friendlies, the highest scoring West Brom player of the summer so far.

While Clarke has been linked with moves for Scott Sinclair, Salomon Kalou and Matej Vydra as he looks to bolster his frontline, Rosenberg is certainly staking a claim for consideration and prior to the match, the Swede spoke of his determination to atone for a debut season which saw him fail to find the net once in the Premier League:

“I didn’t score too many times last season so I have to score a lot in this campaign. I had a tough time last year so it’s good to have a start like this and to start to score goals. I always knew I could score because I scored in every other country, but it’s still nice to bag a goal and to have a pre-season. I missed the pre-season last year and I think it will be good for me in the campaign to come. It is always the same, it doesn’t matter how much experience you get. In the back of your head you know you can score but you have to prove it to the fans and to the people here.”

In Other News
Reports yesterday suggest Steven Fletcher is losing the race to be ready in time for the start of the season. The Sunderland striker is still struggling from the ankle injury that forced him out towards the end of the previous campaign and may be sidelined until September – meaning he would miss a potentially prosperous opening run of three games against Fulham, Southampton and Palace. Fletcher’s absence would mean Paolo Di Canio is likely to retain a 4-4-1-1 formation for the kick-off, with Stephane Sessegnon tucked in behind Jozy Altidore, though the former Wolves man may struggle to pick up many investors upon his return, with the Black Cats’ schedule stiffening significantly from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Roberto Martinez has been singing the praises of Nikica Jelavic after the Croatian bagged a brace in Everton’s weekend win at Blackburn. Jelavic was named as a sub at Ewood Park as Martinez handed Arouna Kone the lone forward role in a 4-3-3 but he staked a claim for first-team inclusion after replacing the Ivorian at the break. Having notched just seven times in the season gone by, Jelavic appears to have slipped down the pecking order following Kone’s arrival but he may still have a significant role to play this term, judging by his manager’s comments:

“In modern football it’s a bit unfair to rely on a player to score you 20-25 goals if you don’t do the things well as a team, you’ll never get the striker in good positions. That’s what we’re starting to develop now; a team that can be strong enough off the ball and that can create enough chances for our strikers to take, but it’s not the moment to assess the players as yet. It’s the time to assess them in each individual exercise and see what sort of relationship we can put on the pitch. What we saw [on Saturday] was a Nikica Jelavic that has come back with a real intention of having a very strong season.”

Having reunited with Martinez following their time together at Wigan, Kone had initially appeared nailed-on for a starting berth for the Toffees. With 13% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Ivorian is the seventh most popular striker in the game at the moment but Jelavic’s form is certainly affording his new manager further options for the central forward role, suggesting wide men Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar may be a little more secure as FPL out of position prospects in Martinez’s front three.

GK - same as myself, good cheap way into Liv def with save pts

DEF - More certainty over Luiz gametime imo, Luiz is the no 1 CB, while Ivanovic is neither the no 1 RB or CB. But a good differential if he looks likely to play both closer to the date. Rest of def looks fine.

MID - a lot invested here compared to upfront, but all 4 are solid picks, can't find a flaw with them. Cabral more nailed on for 4.5

FWD - cheap until RvP comes in. Think Anelka will be rotated with Long, Rosengerg and a new striker. I like J Rod pick, and Lukaku is my weapon of choice for DGW too.

Overall one of the better teams I've seen to be fair

        Hey man
Thanks very much for the advice.
I know Anelka will be rotated to be fair, even Lukaku was. But I can see him being great value for money. Ivanovic is basically just a CHE defender i will swap who ever is most likely nailed on nearer the time.
Shame Koren isn't 4.5 as I had to ship him out for Thomas. Will consider Cabral too, cheers!
I could probably get a better team if I decided to WC but I need to try to save them.

Anyone interested in rating this team?

    Mignolet (Harper)
Kaboul - Touré - Ivanovic (Clyne - Coleman)
Silva - Walcott - Hazard - Mirallas (Thomas)
    Lambert - Benteke - Lukaku

Can't find anyone worth investing in for Man Utd coverage, and I'm not spending 14m on RvP.

Stephane Sessegnon is a name I have not heard in a very long time. Doing okay in pre-season and 7m.

Fixtures are dodgy, but if he can replicate his 2011/2012 form, he is a very good price. Last season, he scored 141pts, not great, but not awful.

Johnson in the same bracket, though not as proven I feel.

Yeah if anything it increases his appeal as no chance of us going with two out and out strikers up top. Sess will be in the hole and has looked lively pre-season. Giaccherini/johnson worth consideration too.

Finished last season very strongly under PDC, when on form he is a very dangerous player.

Captained him for their DGW last season, 180th minute goal, I will be forever a fan after that. Made a mundane wednesday a great one.

Was their interest from some French clubs though at the start of the summer

                      Interesting.

Wenger thinks playing younger players on the wing is the best way to prepare players for forward roles.

Bale's turned out ok, hasn't he? First time I saw him was the Wales Trinidad game and he set up a goal, always felt he had a future as an attacker and had that liability factor at leftback. I suppose you could say he learnt the Dutch way, discovering how to think as a defender so he could learn the weapons to expose them.

I never like giving credit to Redknapp but saying he mismanaged Bale's early career is grossly unfair.

Maybe if Bale was played on the wing sooner, he would have reached these heights sooner.

I'm sure no one at Spurs is regretting how things have turned out for Bale. If anything, he is an all-too-rare example of a British player completely fulfilling his potential.

To use your 'maybe' argument is to be very ignorant of the many factors involved in getting the best out of a player. It can in no way be simplified like that.

We seem to have almost returned to the era of total football again where all players are expected to be able to attack, defend and be good on the ball. It's probably not a bad idea to expose younger players to other positions to improve their all round game, before letting them specialise. Especially as wing roles require slightly less sole responsibility and you are subject to less scrutiny and pressure than when played as a forward.

If you want a 3-5-2 then your 3rd striker needs to be cheaper. Hull's Aluko saves you 0.5 that you could use to upgrade Baker to Collins/Clyne/Shaw/NorwichTurner/Garrido

Or you could go for Palace's Stephen Dobbie at £4.5m and get two of the above.

Eriksen was an incredible prospect two years ago and didn't move anywhere. He had a great season at Ajax last year, I'm baffled as to how in some quarters people feel he hasn't improved as much as he could have, considering he scored more and proceeded to dictate play even further. Probably a reflection on the pressure he was put under around 2010/11 and the staggering expectations rather than anything else.

He will be a great signing for liverpool, I'd assume he'd be a the candidate for the advanced midfield role.

Last season was definitely poorer than the preceding one. He didn't start off too well. He didn't really impose himself on games enough. He did improve later on in the season, but some fans would still be happy to get 15m Euros for him. Personally I would rather keep him.

By the way those odds are very mean, for most players. No way should Eriksen be odds on to go to Liverpool. I would be shocked if he went there, it is a step down in every sense apart from money.

What did you find was underwhelming about him? I must admit I don't support Ajax and I live in England, but do watch a lot of Eredivisie and found him to be great. It seems like everyone was expecting Zidane when the lad was barely out of his teens.

I've seen a lot of him as I've got a season ticket. In home matches especially you would expect him to impose himself on a game more. In the first half of the season we struggled in some home games and it was almost as if he went missing a bit. This is by his high standards by the way. Players mature quickly at Ajax because by 19 they could've been in the academy for a long time and playing lots of next gen matches.

Unfortunately he won't learn anything at Liverpool

Very interesting, thanks Pompeyfan. Good to hear Ajax academy is still held in high regard - are players expected to be the finished product by their early twenties then? In the games I saw it felt like he was making more of an effort to be direct and have an 'economy of effort' so to speak, and I put this down to increased maturity and experience.

I still feel he could learn something at Liverpool considering the style of football they play and Rodgers' faith in youth.

It's good to speak to another Eredivisie fan by the way. Who from your neck of the woods do you expect to be a success this year in the Premier League?

I expect Bony to do very well this season, Chadli should do well. RvW not so well.

The model at Ajax is still to develop players and then dependent on how fast they develop to sell them on. With players like Eriksen maybe it is at 21/22, or like Vertonghen, Alderweireld or de Jong, maybe 24/25/26

I'm not sure Ajax to Liverpool is a step down. The EPL is of higher standard and one of the most competitive leagues in the world. Liverpool have one of the largest fan bases in world football as well as one of the biggest turnovers. As for wages, I would have to completely disagree. I can't see Liverpool offering him a bumper pay package. From what I hear he's on a very decent wage in Holland.

Fan base doesn't come into it, more people watch Ajax than Liverpool. Turnover isn't an attraction for a player unless he is moving for the money.
I can't see him moving to a club not in Europe with technically inferior players.
He is not on that much money, I would be surprised if he earned more than 20k Euros per week.

Fan base definitely comes into it. You want to play to packed out stadiums. Liverpool just played in front of 94,000 in preseason. Turnover is also a huge attraction. Turnover, and in turn profit, proves that you may have the resources to improve your squad. If Eriksen is playing for a team who are labelled as a selling club then why would he want to stay? I think 20k is realistic. And I think Liverpool will offer him somewhere around double that. But having already declined a new deal I would assume money is not his driving motive.

I would have to disagree that more people watch Ajax than Liverpool. Brace yourself for some tedious stats....

The PL has a bigger TV deal than the Eredivisie.
The PL is the most watched in the world. The Dutch league isn't even in the top 5.
Liverpool have more followers on social media sites by far.
Ajax sell an average of 100,000 replica shirts every season. Liverpool sell 810,000 on average. (based on the past 5 seasons)

Moving to Liverpool would be a step up for Eriksen.

Yeah that one surprised me, can't see him going permanently. Especially after what has happened with Tom Ince.

Perhaps. I can't see why he would want to leave personally, especially as Rodgers obviously likes him a lot. And no way would we sell him. Him and Ibe will be stars in a few years!

                      Mainstream for a reason.

If it helps, I like Cabaye at that price, but in good faith, id not suggest him as the "best" option 🙂

Best option for £6.5m given his opening fixtures. I can't see his output being as high this season though because Norwich have brought some good players in, who will surely get a decent share of assist/goal/bonus points.

Is there much to choose between Mirallas and Pienaar? With set pieces and 0.5 cheaper, I wonder whether Pienaar might be a decent choice.

I'd love to see someone win FPL only to be stripped of their crown when it was discovered they'd entered multiple teams.

This is virtually impossible. There is no way to prove that someone has several teams.

Messi and Neymar for me, not by much, but they're on average younger and still have room to grow. Bale will get better and better though.

Was going to get Silva for DGW1, as i'll be WC'ing. But won't he also be in the Spanish squad most likely?

City play a day latter then Chelsea, so extra rest. Still pushing it close though.

I'm wondering, given the quantity of EPL teams that have abandoned 4-4-2 if there's an argument to be made that the FPL squad structure is outdated? Talk on here is often of a front 8, do we need to draw such a firm line between the 5&3? I'd like the ability to pick 6&2 or 4&4 and it would probably go a long way towards giving more tactical flexibility, and less template teams. I know the pricing would have to be impacted but it would help deal with all the attacking OOP mids that dominate the game at times. Given the trouble finding viable forward options this year I've basically concluded that the issue is with the game, and not my refusal to sign Berbatov.

I agree but it looks like the 433 is starting to come into fashion as well so they can't exactly base it around the 4231.

also the fact that FPL doesnt include defensive mids and give them scores for clean sheets/tackles etc.

Would you like to see a squad where you have a choice of

                  2 goalkeepers
                  5 defenders
                  1/2 defensive mids

Defensive mids would need to earn big points to prevent managers chucking 4.5/5.0s in there to allow them to get the big priced attackers. Even then, it massively increases the chances of OOPs being created.

Would overcomplicate things too much. Baps SHOULD reward def mid players more, that would be an adequate compromise in my view. Baps should be there for the unsung things, not scoring goals.

Agree, it just annoys me that the structures of the game are so restrictive. The simplicity is what makes it accessible but it feels pretty dry compared to the way teams are actually lining up. Anything to freshen it up would be welcomed.

Who will play the middle of the CHE attacking three behind the striker? I thought Haz was a lock for the center role now that Jose has hinted about slotting Mata in on the right. Andre Schürrle on the left?

It maybe Schurrle, Hazard, Mata, yes. But I think Jose will stick Hazard out on the left as that's where he's at his best, imo. So maybe we'll see Hazard, Oscar, Mata.

Even with a double I can't justify getting Benteke at first. And I'm not sure of Anelka.
Giroud is a great bet evevn with Wally, Arsenal often got big scores and spread the points, I understand if you don't want to double up though.

Hello, I cannot login on FPL from the iOS app. It says my login details could not be authorized, please try again,
I have already registered my team for the 13/14 season.
Is the app not ready yet? Anyone with the same problem?

                        Hi Yome,

You have to wait for the new app to be released, and buy and install it. The 12/13 app doesn't work for the new season.

Unlikely, considering it wasn't last year. Its still a tiny amount and a great way of boosting revenue, so it makes a lot of business sense to get people to buy a new one every year.

The one at m.fantasypremierleague.com is though. Not very nice though.

Hi Mathmo, ok thanks for your answer! I will then buy the new one once it is available.
I am going to delete this 12/13 app.
                          Cheers

Your name now links to your profile which includes recent comments and also (if you add one) a link to your team/other website. You can specify what the link is in your profile just as you used to.

                      Hazard's only on 27%

Surely even casuals realise he's the best player have this week, they can see he has a double. I'd be surprised if anyone one this site gets below average in the DGW! 🙂
