Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

China Mag thought that they'd try to get two of Remy/Gomis/Bent. and Remy is only on loan right? I wouldn't be surprised if they try to sign another striker on a permanent deal

Going just before deadline day (after GW1) is the most interesting FPL scenario.

If he's still at Tottenham at the start, those people with him in their team will have some surgery to do.

It's definitely less risky not to have him.

I think 4.5 will do, just not too sure of the pecking order over there. Thinking mostly about GW3 when it'll either be a points hit, or playing a team that barely squeaks to 11 players.

          Thanks for the insight

Even if he's still at Spurs come GW1, having him is risky. It would be fine if he were going to another BPL team, but going to Spain means you might need to take hits to correct your team when he eventually goes, perhaps even need to wildcard.

Chadli and Soldado are to Bale what Podolski and Giroud were to Van Persie. The writing is on the wall.

It's easy enough to downgrade a 12m milf and spent the money elsewhere.

No biggy, but I agree it will be a painful to watch a 12m player score 0 and having a 4.5m milf coming from the bench scoring 1 probably.

You seem to have milfs on the brain. 🙂

There is an opportunity cost though. If you have Bale at 12m and Snodgrass at 6.5, you could have had two 9m cougars instead. Like Walcott, Hazard, Coutinho, Silva.

You'll have at least about 2m in the bank after transferring him out. That's 2m that you could have invested in your team.

        I'm tempted by both. Stoke/Southampton (H) and Villa (A) in the first 5. And he's just 5.0?

I think I'll avoid it though, as Man U visits in GW3, definitely looking like a trouble GW for those of us buying Hazard/Lukaku/Benteke.

Does anyone think Real Madrid are stalling over Bale because they are wanting Ronaldo to sign a new contract. Once its signed i wouldnt be suprised if they lose interest in Bale , leaving him in limbo

yeah I saw something about that suggesting perhaps the bale bid was mainly to help progress Ronaldo signing a new contract and/or to provide them with a replacement if talks with ronaldo fell through and he didn't sign and they were forced into a quick sell

    Triggerlip's post got me thinking...

I do agree with his template idea when it comes to the raw numbers. It is actually one of the most crucial things in FPL to have that balance. I even wrote out a template for myself before FPL released prices and it's interesting that I have largely stuck to it...though it does require discipline.

For me it was something like

    4.5 + 4.5
    6 + 4.5 + 4.5 + 4 + 4
    12 + 10 + 10 + 6 + 5
    10 + 9 + 6

This is why I've completely ignored RVP as an option. He completely warps this kind of template. But what's interesting now too is that Bale might leave. So that 12m spot which I had planned for Bale is now a 9.5m spot for Hazard/Walcott. So everything has turned out a good few million cheaper.

I have really enjoyed this because it allows you to really stretch your budget to accommodate some interesting players you might not have been able to own otherwise.

I've normally been pretty vocal about my love for cheap rotating keepers but this season I can't help but see some worth in the likes of Hart to start with. Keepers like Mignolet and De Gea also offer real value if you wanted to play them week in week out instead of a complicated rotation.

But most of all, I believe City's fixtures are incredibly kind to start off. And Hart might be a luxury but I just see them keeping plenty of CS in their first 10. Yes, the top teams took a while to get going defensively last season but I don't think that is something that has ALWAYS been the case. Far from it, I think the elite teams are solid and will dominate teams enough to restrict their chances at the other end.

I am so much in love with City's fixtures that I think I am going to double up with Hart + Zabaleta for the first 5/6 games at least. I might be wrong about this but it just feels right this year (if you can like me avoid the likes of RVP who will suffocate your options)

      Re: Template
Just don't see the point in setting yourself a price template like the one above. Why restrict your options like that?

      Re: Hart
The whole point of cheap keepers is that save points level out the points that keepers get in a way that doesn't happen for defenders. If you don't want RVP I would suggest getting some pricey defenders such as Baines or Kompany.

      1. Sangfroid

It's not restricting your options imo. It's more just a realistic body for your team. Most of the time you have to make sacrifices. So being disciplined and saying I must get two 4.5 and two 4m defenders instead of splashing out can be hard when you see all the options!

I think there are certain templates that just make sense with FPL because the prices are all rounded up...it's a bit like tetris. I think if you don't pay attention to that underlying structure then you can get yourself in trouble trying to fit squares into round holes etc.

Why bother getting Kompany when you can get Zabaleta? And why get Baines when you can get Coleman? There is value everywhere imo. Yes I get you about the cheap keepers, I am a huge fan of cheap rotating keepers, it's a beautiful art. But I'm just thinking right now for those fixtures...City are actually worth a double up!

I didn't mean get Kompany instead of Zabaleta - I meant get both to double up on City rather than getting Hart. I'm not really saying get Baines per se, just that money is better spent on expensive defenders rather than goalkeepers given the choice.

      a) when I figured out that I wouldn't captain RvP in any of the first three gameweeks, I could rest more easy about not having him.

      b) Bale's in my team untill he's offically sold. My most likely captain in GW2, unless one City-player emerges as must-have-heavy-hitter.
