Scout Report – Diego Lugano

West Brom boss Steve Clarke made his third move of the summer transfer market late last week with the acquisition of Diego Lugano from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. The 32-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a two-year contract and is the third signing of the close-season, after Nicolas Anelka penned a permanent deal and Goran Popov returned on another year-long loan.

Speaking to the club’s official website at the weekend, the Baggies Sporting and Technical director Richard Garlick admitted the Uruguayan has been on West Brom’s radar for quite some time:

“We identified central defence as one of the areas within the squad in which we wanted to increase competition this summer. Diego is a player we have been aware of for the past couple of years and when we discovered he wouldn’t be re-joining Malaga, we made our move. We have very much done our homework on Diego. His CV speaks for itself and we’ve also received glowing reports about him as a person. He had other attractive offers but we’re delighted he has agreed to join us. His game is very much suited for the Premier League.”

The History

Lugano’s career started back in 1998 with hometown club Atlético Libertad before he was snapped up by Uruguayan giants Nacional the following year. The centre-half failed to make an impact in his new surrounds and, with just 13 league appearances over the course of three campaigns, was farmed out on loan to Plaza Colonia – installed as skipper, he notched four times in 46 games.

Brazilian side Sao Paulo came calling in 2003 and Lugano soon established himself as a key figure at the back. Scoring eight times in 96 league games over three seasons, the Uruguayan’s most successful campaign was back in 2005, where he helped his side to a league title, a Copa Libertadores and the FIFA Club World Cup. A Brazilian title followed once again the following year, with Lugano voted the best defender in the division for two years in a row.

In the summer of 2006 Lugano was on the move again, with Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe shelling out €7.5m for his services. During his five-year tenure, he won the Turkish league twice and also picked up the domestic cup on a couple of occasions, while his attacking potential came to the fore again, with 22 goals and five assists from 125 league matches. He also proved to be something of a card magnet, though, and picked up 38 yellows and three reds over his time in Turkey.

A move to PSG in August 2011 proved to be somewhat disastrous for his career, though. Lugano made just 12 appearances (with seven bookings accrued) in his first season as a result of injuries and poor form and was farmed out on loan to Spanish side Malaga midway through last term, playing 10 times in La Liga before returning to his parent club at the end of the campaign.

On the international stage, Lugano has turned out for his country 85 times and found the net on nine occasions, with his most recent strike arriving in this summer’s Confederations Cup against Nigeria.

The Prospects

While the move has been hailed as a coup by some, Steve Clarke wasted little time in warning the new boy he faces a challenge to break into the Baggies first-team for the season ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Diego to the club. He’s an experienced centre-half who will increase competition in that area of the team. This is a tough league. You need as many good players in your squad as you can get – and Diego is undoubtedly one of those. Like some of the others we have here, Diego is another player who captains his country and is a leader. He has a real hunger and ambition to play and succeed in the Barclays Premier League and he will hopefully get a platform here to show everyone what he can do. However, Diego knows he’s got a fight on his hands to get into the team.”

Given that the World Cup is just a year away, Lugano clearly requires a consistency of game time after a miserable last couple of years. While Clarke had a tendency to rotate his attacking midfield and forward options, centre-half was the most secure of any position – both Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley were afforded 36 starts apiece in the new manager’s first year at the Hawthorns’ helm.

Further analysis of the Baggies defensive displays may afford Lugano hope, though. Having picked up four clean sheets in the first 10 Gameweeks of 2012/13, the midlands outfit registered only four more over the remainder of the campaign and managed to keep out their opponents once in 15 matches between Gameweeks 11-28.

Lugano’s arrival is likely to be a blow for Craig Dawson’s hopes of breaking into the Baggies’ first-team, with the 23-year-old already linked with a move to Bolton, having spent time on loan at the Reebok last term. Priced today at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the ideal scenario would be for Lugano to oust McAuley in the pecking order, given that the latter will set you back 5.5 to Olsson’s 5.0. Lugano has also been added to the Sky Sports game at 5.2 – cheaper than both McAuley and Olsson.

At the moment, though, his arrival merely poses questions for Fantasy managers and is likely to increase the appeal of Ben Foster as a Baggies backline option. The stopper looks assured of starts under Clarke and his rotation with Southampton’s Artur Boruc is already a popular option on the site, with a run of 11 strong home fixtures in the opening 12 Gameweeks (SOT, SUN, SWA, WHM, SUN, CPL, SWA, sto, FUL, CPL, HUL, AVL). Clarke’s selection policy will be one to watch, then, and if Lugano can cement a place in the first XI his attacking threat certainly looks prosperous, though his disciplinary record may persuade many to steer clear regardless.

    With the almighty one:

    Kim / Hazard / Walcott / Thomas / Mirallas

    RVP / Benteke / Soldado

    Without the almighty one:

    Thomas -> Coutinho
    RVP -> Lukaku

    Which do I pick?

He seems to feel that Liverpud haven't honoured an agreement that was agreed upon in the past. It two sides to the story. If I was Suaz, I'd show a little more loyalty and give it another season.

he's given them enough time. I'm sure they sold great stories about where they would be in 3 years time etc.. Last season 7th, not acceptable. Anyway when Liverpool bought him they knew about his ambitious character, he did the same thing at FC Groningen. They only have themselves to blame

We're all ambitious, why are the rules so different for football players?

Liverpool aren't gonna finish in the top 4 even this season, so he is doing what he feels best for his career.

Everyone's just blowing it out of proportion because Suarez is saying it. He basically said that him and Liverpool agreed he could leave if they didn't qualify for the Champions League. Not sure how true it is but it's quite fair enough. The man couldn't have done anymore for them to get them there.

Cheeky first RMT of the season for me here:

    Mignolet-(Boruc)
    Luiz-Kompany-Coleman-(Chester-Brayford)
    Hazard-Kagawa-Coutinho-Mirallas-(Thomas)
    Giroud-Lukaku-Sturridge

No RvP, no Bale, but still too standard?

      Gk okay.
Bad K is too much money.
Midpark looks light with Kags, Mirallas, Thomas. Needs beefing up esp as you have no RVP.
Lightweight front 3. Luk probable won't start and Giroud is average fare.

      4/10.

Nothing wrong with your midfield, But Kagawa is very punty.

Front three: Giroud and Sturrridge will play and are good value considering fixtures, Lukaku may not start but its a DGW with two easy fixtures. Nothing wrong with it.

Is Kompany really neccesarily thats a lot of money to put into your defense, you could go cheaper within the same team if your set on having City defensive cover.

decent first (RMT) effort for the season. not as boilerplate as many around these parts.

i agree that kompany is too rich given options like mert/zaba/kosc/toure/enrique for less, with greater attacking potential and roughly equal CS potential.

assume lukes is out after the dgw; for whom? also, i think paulinho/chadli might be better shouts than mirallas for the same price. better fixtures and arguably better potential. realize mirallas is oop but i have the feeling he's going to be one you'd want to rotate, and i would have a touch time benching 7.5m.

My current exit strategy for Oscar is Cazorla. Presumably he's been priced so high because of his added bonus point potential this year.

You're right of course and I know how weak I am in that respect 🙂

But having realised how often I use my 5th mid, I want someone both nailed on and a realistic goal threat. At the moment, I don't see anyone like that for 4.5m Possible candidates:

                - Ross Barkley
                - Ravel Morrison
                - Alex Pozuelo

But it'll be a while before we know what the situation is with any of them. Until them, I quite like Kim, who also lets me keep two Chelsea players through GW3.

Considering the missing GW is GW 3 and chelsea play manu GW 2 we all know we want our chelsea guys out sharpish. Maybe we gotta think about which players got the most potential to play minutes and get points out of 270 minutes(GW 1 and GW 2) when considerin them.. Mata looks set to play atleast a game in the double and surely the 90 at manchester united.. and considerin he has set pieces in his locker is the most likely(apart from hazard) to score points away to manchester. seems a better bet than lukaku, a chelsea defender, oscar over the 270 minutes

No, I believe Oscar is a better bet than Mata right now. Lukaku is central to me. So I am mulling over Oscar and Ivanovic. Currently Ivanovic.

Paul Scharner has turned down a move to Hull "for family reasons". He wants to stay in Hamburg, even though HSV have told him that he's got no future there.

Given the choice of the two cities, you can't really blame him.

Your defence is pretty weak, could do with some money been spent there obivously your midfield is strong try downgrading like Michu to a 7mil player and use the 2.5m on defender upgrades.

Plays either as a striker or off the striker and classed as a mid could be a decent shot at cheap value?

Attacking options are doing my head in this year. There appear to be no standout options this year in the premium catergory that don't carry some level of risk. My observations of the likely lads:

RVP - Hefty price tag plus new manager syndrome plus tricky fixtures to start. All of these concerns worry me, however the uncertainty around most of the other candidates coupled with the likelyhood of Bale going makes the investment worth while in my opinion. Despite the outlay you can still build a strong team around him

Aguero - Coming back from injury and far from nailed on with the plethoro of other City attacking options. Could serve as a useful downgrade option for RVP owners though if he starts well (and RVP doesn't!).

Navas/Negrado - Haven't seen enough of City's new forwards to make a proper judgement call, but Dzeko remains the standout City option for me. For those that are not comfortable with Dzeko I would challenge that Silva arguably offers a safer option if you are looking for City attacking assets. One for the watchlist

Soldado - Brings with him an excellent reputation from La Liga and is without doubt a real prospect. What is putting me off is the Bale transfer saga, how it is affecting the team. They have not looked good in pre-season without him and I do worry that they will carry this negativity in to the new season. Moreover, without Bale who will be Soldado's key supply lines? One for the watch list, with a strategy for Lukaku owners to upgrade GW2/3 if he does hit the ground running

Sturridge - Fancied by many on here but I have my doubts. Like Aguero he is recovering from injury so match fitness from the start is questionable. Moreover Sturidge is injury prone at the best of times. Over valued at 9m and I would preffer to take a punt on Aspas as a Liverpool attacking option

Giroud - Probably the most nailed on of the group (aside from RVP), although Triggerlips stats from his earlier post do expose his poor conversion ratio. Decent pre-season form though and in my opinion a strong candidate at 8.5

Lukaku - Many peoples short term punt for the DGW and a worthy punt in my opnion. However for those of us planning on holding on to our wildcards I would argue that defensive cover (in the mould of Cech, Cole, Ivan and possibly Luiz) is a safer strategy.

Dzeko - Excellent pre-season form asupported by encouraging words from Pellegrini make Dzeko a decent punt to start. Long term prospects are far ffrom guaranteed but I believe that Dzeko is a decent punt to start with their favourable run of fixtures.

    Thats my two penneth.....

I haven't seen a good balanced team with RVP in yet, though. Surely if Aguero is back to training, Dzeko's appeal has diminished greatly.
As for Lukaku, I don't believe he is nailed on to start and definitely won't if the Rooney transfer goes through. There will be a lot of teams having massive headaches then as how to get him in.

Agree re Lukaku, he's a DGW punt. As I say, I believe defensive options provide a safer route in for DGW cover, with plenty of exit strategy options available. Noted re Dzeko also, the next 9 days will allow us to better qualify his prospects

Maybe an unproven Soldado for Giroud? I think Bony is a beast and hope that the way Swansea play will fit in but be interesting to see how they juggle him and Michu.

That's what my heart says haha. He's my favorite player. I feel like City will share the goals, but he'll be bossing the midfield. Plenty to pass to. Coutinho put on great displays though. I feel like having Silva will limit my transfers, but I also feel that Coutinho could wreck a Mark Hughes Stoke

Cheers guys. I think both are great options, and I wouldn't regret too much selecting one over the other if someone performed better, but I just don't like going without City cover at the start and I don't like Dzeko because I'll most certainly be transferring him out in the near future.

I feel like City will be free scoring like 2 seasons ago with a new manager to motivate them and Silva being fit and Spanish players to support! Hmmmm

Just a suggestion, why not contribute to the forum before asking for an RMT on your first (and second) post?

I only recently started using FFS, made my first post about 2 weeks ago, with the intention of building up some integrity, and slowly I began learning for the other users.

I still haven't posted an RMT and I no longer feel the need to since they've taught me enough to RMownT.

But looking at that team, it looks like you've read plenty of posts already - the team looks very good, city coverage aside, IMO.

Yep - good point, will do so for sure, sorry. Just finding my way around this site & the forum business now (& the etiquette therein!)

Feel free to send me your team & I will cast my very inexpert eye over it.

Man City I am not so sure, just too much rotation risk aside from the expensive defenders - if Silva or a striker gets a consistent run I will be tempted but other than expensive Hart & maybe Kompany I am not sure who else - I suppose Lescott due to Nastasic injury but that could only be short termish.

Finally, on 3rd post another request for me me me! - any idea how you get a picture up please?

There's every chance Lukaku can play just one game for Chelski and get a 2 point return. He won't have the same high goal involvement at West Brom.. and therea are several options at the Blues who can hog the attacking points.

Hazard-Ivanovic-Cole is a decent prospect, as it seems all of these players will start twice.

Morning! Couple of thoughts to throw out there:

-Has Adrian really given up being first choice keeper in a Europe League side in Spain to sit on a mid-table, bench in East London? At 26?

-If you start with Lukaku, will you really want to sell him come GW2, knowing what happened last time he played United?

      Morning Jonny

(thanks for digging out the Pellegrini video for me the other week, I'd logged off and only discovered it the next day)

      - Doos thinks Adrian may well be first choice, which would be amazing
      - I'll be holding Lukaku until it looks like he isn't first choice, which I cannot imagine happening

        No problem 🙂

Don't really feel that happy with the Migs/non-playing option, so will be keeping eyes very open for any hints that Adrian/Boruc is an option.

And I'm with you on Lukaku too, with the caveat that I'd be worried about his value by the time GW4 comes around.

I'm not worried about his price. A big GW1 score will have the casual horde marching on his door and it's only a relative minority of hardcore players who will know about his blank and plan ahead to remove him.

    Hey Men

What do we think of an incredible midfield, a solid defense and a pathetic strikeforce that relys on one player?

    Migonlet/Boruc
    Cole/Terry/Turner/Collins/4.0
    Mirallas/Hazard/Countino/Michu/Walcott
    JRod/Soldado/Maynard

Maynard to only come on and get 2 points if needed, could always downgrade Terry to Toure and upgrade Maynard to Anelka

Everybody considering Lescott due to Nastasic injury. Don't. I was in that camp, but there are rumors that he had disagreements with the club personal, so he is on a thin edge. Probably will leave before the transfer deadline. They are after Pepe apparently. But I think Richards is above him in the pecking order, meaning Zaba is great choice.
