Pre-Season

Results Round-Up – Sunday

Robin Van Persie is at the double as United clinch the Community Shield with a comfortable win over Wigan. Kevin Mirallas and Nikica Jelavic notch their fourth goals of pre-season as Everton get the better of Real Betis, Luke Shaw pulls out of England Under 21 duty with a knee problem, Cesar Azpilicueta admits he’s not yet fully match-fit as Chelsea’s double Gameweek fast approaches and reports in the local press suggest Philppe Coutinho may be moved into a central position this season for Liverpool:

Man United 2 Wigan 0
Robin Van Persie served a reminder of his capabilities ahead of next week’s season opener at Swansea by grabbing both United’s goals at Wembley yesterday. The Dutchman needed less than quarter of an hour to open his account for the campaign, heading home a Patrice Evra cross, before adding a second just before 60 minutes after being teed up by Danny Welbeck – the latter was preferred in the support role to Shinji Kagawa, who managed just seven minutes off the bench.

Phil Jones started alongside Nemanja Vidic at centre-half, while Wilfried Zaha was again given the nod on the right wing by Moyes – Zaha’s chances of starting next week at Swansea were bolstered by the news that both Nani and Ashley Young were omitted from yesterday’s squad after picking up injuries. David Moyes was dealt a blow after Rafael limped off after just 16 minutes with a suspected hamstring injury – the Brazilian is, of course, suspended for the Swansea clash but, post-match, the United boss didn’t seem too concerned – a suggestion, perhaps, that his withdrawal was no more than a precautionary matter,

“Rafa said that he felt his hamstring and in a game like this when you have an opportunity to make substitutes, it was fine. He is suspended for the first game of the season anyway, so in a way, I wouldn’t say it doesn’t matter but it won’t have an effect on what we do next weekend.”

While Moyes was giving little away, reports in the local media have suggested Rafael may be out for “four to five weeks” with the problem – if such a scenario transpires, Jones looks the likeliest beneficiary, as he shifted to right-back upon the Brazilian’s departure, allowing Chris Smalling to slot in beside Vidic in the centre.

Everton 2 Real Betis 1
Roberto Martinez rolled out a 4-3-3 formation in the Toffees final match of the summer. With Marouane Fellaini missing out due to a minor injury, Ross Barkley started alongside Darron Gibson and Leon Osman in central midfield, while the in-form Nikica Jelavic got the nod ahead of Arouna Kone as the lone forward, with Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar handed the flank roles up top. Once again, Mirallas and Jelavic continued their impressive pre-season form under the new manager – the Belgian teed up the former Glasgow Rangers man for the opener before notching the hosts’ second; ahead of next weekend’s trip to Norwich, the pair have each scored four of Everton’s 12 goals over the summer.

After the game, the Everton boss issued an injury update on Fellaini and Gibson, who was subbed off at half-time with a knee problem. While the Belgian is expected back imminently, Gibson’s potential absence could perhaps hand Barkley a chance to stake a claim for regular game time under the Spaniard:

“Marouane would have been available if it was a competitive game. He picked up a cut on the US tour. Bearing in mind he has to join the Belgium squad now – and in two days the infection will clear – I didn’t want to risk hurting him. Darron is the only negative. We have been quite fortunate throughout pre-season not to pick up knocks and bruises, but in the warm-up he opened his knee slightly, so he’s got a grade one ligament problem. We’ll have a clearer idea of it in the next 48 hours.”

In Other News
Brendan Rodgers has spoken of his intentions for Daniel Sturridge over the season ahead after he returned from a summer-long ankle injury last weekend. The Liverpool boss has arranged a behind-closed-doors friendly this week in order to boost the forward’s chances of making Saturday’s home game against Stoke and, although Iago Aspas and Luis Suarez (once his suspension ends) offer possibilities as the lone forward, Rodgers made it pretty clear it is Sturridge who will take up the most advanced role:

“He has wanted to be in this position – leading the attack for a big club with everything that brings. He was in really good form at the end of last season which got him called up for England and it was unfortunate he got a bad injury. But I can have no complaints how he has worked. I’m sure this season he can demonstrate he is a top striker.”

An article in the local press also suggests Philippe Coutinho is being earmarked for a role in “the hole” behind the former Chelsea man – a suggestion Rodgers is set to move to a 4-2-3-1 formation. Allegedly, Suarez had initially been pencilled in with a move to the flank as Rodgers is keen for the Brazilian to operate more centrally this season and the Reds manager admitted at the weekend he was “looking for someone on the left with pace and who can score goals”, with the Suarez situation forcing him to reassess his plans before the transfer window closes.

Southampton’s Luke Shaw has withdrawn from the England Under 21 squad to face Scotland tomorrow evening. The left-back is awaiting scans on the knee problem that forced him off in Saturday’s friendly win over Real Sociedad amid fears he may have sustained ligament damage. Any potential lay-off brings Danny Fox into contention for a regular role and adds to Mauricio Pochettino’s worries at the back – Nathaniel Clyne has yet to feature over the summer but his manager remains optimistic he could return to training this week, with Callum Chambers on standby to deputise if he fails to recover in time.

Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta has admitted he’s still building up his match fitness after an extended break over the pre-season. The right-back’s international duties for Spain in the recent Confederations Cup meant he has not long returned to domestic action and speaking to the Blues website after the weekend win over Roma, he revealed:

“I feel good after an hour. Sometimes you need to increase your minutes little by little and it was good to play 60, it’s the correct way to approach the season. Sometimes in training I have felt tired but it is normal and you need to work and we have one more week to be fit for the first game. I came back later because of the national team, so we had more days out and now we have an international friendly game to prepare. It’s another game to be able to play to build fitness. We play on Wednesday and then travel back to London, so I hope I will be ready for the league.”

While Juan Mata and Fernando Torres have both been omitted from the Spain squad to face Ecuador on Wednesday evening, Azpilicueta faces a lengthy period of travel before returning to Stamford Bridge on Thursday. With a home game against Hull on Sunday afternoon, it may well be that Jose Mourinho decides to ease him back into the fold, with Branislav Ivanovic looking the favourite to start against Steve Bruce’s side. Bearing in mind they face a trip to Old Trafford the following weekend, Azpilicueta could be handed a starting berth for Tuesday evening’s match at home to Villa if Mourinho decides to utilise the depth of his squad; a potentially frustrating scenario for Fantasy managers looking for a secure route into Chelsea’s defence for double Gameweek 1.

    For & Against RVP

    For:

    1) Guaranteed 20+ goal a season if he stays fit.

    2) Guaranteed to get game time.

    3) Easy Captain pick against any team.

    4) Some would argue that it is easier to transfer him out than try to get him in.

    5) If he does start scoring big the shear high percentage of other people that have him ,and will captain him, will see you fall well behind.

    Against:

    1) He costs 14m

    2) Including him has a big impact on the rest of your squad.

    3) Has been injury prone in the past (not a strong argument against admitidly)

    4) Can make you lazy with captains picks resulting on missing out on big points from players that have a potential big scoring game.

    ***********************************************

Now I have an issue with point 4 of the "For" argument. You often hear people say it's harder to transfer in RVP if you don't have him than to get rid if he doesn't preform. Pointing out that if you have all your money tied up it will probably take 2 transfers to get him in rather than the 1 it will take to get rid.

But have people thought of the risk of having a rotating 2 pair of say 5.0m Gayle and 5.0m Kim alongside RVP rather than 2 x 8.0m Strikers and a 8.0m Midfielder (both costing 24m)?

Say one of Gayle or Kim get injured or banned? What other options are there in the 5.0m price bracket that will interest you? Where as if one of the 8.0m options get injured there will be a raft of players to pick from.

I could easily see the RVP + 5.0m + 5.0m option end up costing you 2 transfers to fix as easy as trying to get RVP in could!

    ***********************************************

My decision on the matter is that I truly believe any of my current front 3 can get 20+ goals this season. Lukaku, Benteke & Bony. Sturridge will be coming in at some point as well for one of the above who sits in the same category.

RVP will probably be guaranteed to get 20+ but for me the the extra 5/6m cost compared to one of those isn't worth it for me.

I mean that's 1 top quality GK/Defender, a reasonable Midfielder or an upgrade on players across the board. The only time RVP is worth it, in my opinion, is if you are going to captain him every week and stick to that plan.

    ***********************************************

Anyone got anymore for the For & Against RVP argument?

      Against:
      * New manager (Moyes), yes it´s only preseason but United haven´t impressed me at all tbh.
      * Kagawa haven´t played much preseason, don´t look matchfit (or good) yet. I think a Kagawa in form will improve RvP chances of scoring.
      * IF united, and RvP have a slow start.. you will be behind pretty much imo, having tied up so much in one player.
      * Soldado, Negredo, Sturridge, Benteke, Lukaku, Giroud, Bony, Dzeko (possibly) and so on.. all strikers that can score 20+goals this season.. maybe not 25-30 (as RvP), but still

Don't forget that your team is by no means sorted with just one transfer if you do sell RVP. You will have at least €3m sat in the bank after you sell him until you make the next transfer.

It think you hinted at that anyway but I thought it was worth pointing out.

I'm For RVP and I'll moderately manage the rest of the team i.e. 1 big hitter mid + 1 mid hitter striker + decent 2 x 5.0 - 6.0 def.

      My mids atm:

Hazard Mirallas Nolan Snodgrass RMorrison - Think this is pretty decent although at this point in time I tinkered sooo many times I could just end up bottom of the barrel come GW3.

      Strikers:
      RVP Sold Anelka

      Defs:
      Toure Ivan Collins Chester MTurner

      GK:
      Cech Stekelenburg

Early fixtures. It's been discussed a lot before but in general there are two ways of interpreting the rather misleading phrase "this player is fixture proof". One way is that the player is so strong that you will never wish to bench him. The other way is the thinking that his FPL output is not dependent on his fixtures. In my opinion, the second way of looking at the phrase, "fixture proof" is just plain wrong. Everyone's potential FPL output is dependent on their opponent. If Michu is playing Crystal Palace at home, he much more likely to get a huge haul that away to Man City. Therefore, Michu may be in your team every week for the first few weeks but he's not good value for money, whilst Swansea have got such an bad run of fixtures.

        The plan is Terry>Coleman & Lukaku>Sturridge

If Hazard fails to deliver, Ben Arfa will be waiting to replace him 😉

        Thanks for the response 🙂

I have some questions. Parr and Brayford are good picks? Luiz or Ivanovic? Mata or Hazard? I want to keep Nolan, Snodgrass, Kiscielny, Mignolet, Walcott and Lambert fo sure.

    Mignolet (Boruc)

    Baines, Luiz, Koscielny (Parr, Brayford)

    Mata(C), Walcott, Nolan, Snodgrass (Kim)

    Giroud, Lukaku, Lambert

Du you think using a wildcard during the first international break is a good idea?
    Here's the pros IMO:

+ You can get RVP without hits
+ Same with Bale if he stays
+ You may know which Man City players Pellegrini prefers.
+ You can boost your team value with early bandwagons.

Dzeko has had a great pre season so it's likely he will get starts in the first few gameweeks, especially because Aguero isn't matchfit and Negredo travels to Ecuador with Spain. Nasty is out so Lescott is very likely starter too.

    Longish post....

    Boruc foster
    cole chester collins turner brayford
    miralas hazard wally xxx xxx
    lukaku rvp xxx

    have 18.5m to spend..so
    A: mid upto 5 (kim/koren)+mid upto 6 (morrison/lallana/sissoko)+fwd upto 7.5 (dzeko/lambert/berb)
    B: mid upto 5 (kim/koren) + mid upto 7.5 (ben arfa/ anyone else) + fwd upto 6 (jrod/anelka)
    C: 2 mids upto 5 (kim/koren) + fwd upto 8.5 (giroud/bony)

    Currently leaning on A as
    - there arent any good mids between the 6-8m range (problem with B)
    - my mid will be very weak with two super cheapies (problem with C)

Will use dzeko upfront...and upgrade to soldado in future by downgrading cole

    Thoughts?

After getting rid of Lukaku after GW1:

    1) Soldado - Aguero - JRod
    or
    2) Soldado - Negredo - Berbatov/Lambert

i prefer oscar to lukaku. I think they are even on potential GW1 output but i like oscar going forward more. 3 striker positions are so precious, to use one who may be benched once every 3 games on average is a bad investment IMO. I feel Oscar has a chance to be sat closer to one out of every 5 games.

    Take on Eriksen

No wonder Spurs are climbing all over themselves to get at Christian Eriksen. Already named one of the biggest talents in his age group, the 21-year-old Dane has just finished his fifth season for Dutch giants Ajax. With his contract expiring in the summer of 2014 it’s either leaving or resigning for Eriksen. The former looks most likely.

Christian Dannemann Eriksen, 5 foot 9 inches of Danish magic, was born on Valentine’s Day, 1992. He started playing football at the age of three(!) at Danish club Middelfart Sanderum before joining Odense BK. Eriksen has been raised up in a footballing family. Both his parents played the game and also his little sister enjoys a game of football. From the start Eriksen oozed talent. During his time at Odense BK, Eriksen had trials at both Chelsea and Barcelona. The English side thought the Dane lacked physical strength. Once Ajax came in it was an easy choice for Eriksen. He started for the U17’s but joined the U19’s at the end of his first season and started to train with the first team. He joined the first team in January 2010 and made his debut on January 17 against NAC Breda. The Dane made his debut for his country two months later. Ever since he’s been a regular starter for the Amsterdammers and his star has been rising.

Eriksen has always been compared to Danish legend Michael Laudrup. He sure has similarities with the current Swansea manager. Eriksen is a joy to watch, he has a fluidity and style in his actions combined with superb technical ability. Physically he’s light but he compensates for this with his speed, technique and excellent positioning. The Ajax number 8 has a good right foot, crosses the ball well and can play decisive passes that can open a defence. For someone who’s only 21 years old, he has a remarkable insight and vision of the game. His actions looks simple due to his instinctive natural qualities.

Eriksen possesses a brilliant sense of timing on the ball, and he can bring those around him into the game very well. Moreover, his attacking strengths make him a very potent weapon in the middle of the field—someone is strong and capable of thriving in the English game.

Someone asked him back in 2010 once what his dream is. Christian’s answer: ‘winning the championship with Ajax’. He didn’t mention his dream club, winning the Champions League or winning the World Cup. Despite interest from other clubs, he showed his commitment to the club to lengthen his deal to 2014. He has said that only when he has fully learned his trade and become a top player at Ajax then maybe he will consider moving abroad. The question that raises is: has he?

It’s for sure that Eriksen has improved himself in the five seasons he’s been playing for Ajax but there’s one thing that remains: his lack of scoring goals. Rafael van der Vaart and Wesley Sneijder, to which he has been compared during his days at Ajax, were two players who started banging in goals after being settled in Ajax’s first team. Despite that, he’s been involved in most goals under Frank de Boer: mostly assists.

Another criticism Eriksen has received is that he only steps up in the so called big games against Holland’s top clubs and Champions League sides. Of course it’s easier to motivate yourself for those games but if you want to become a top player you should also be decisive against the ‘smaller’ clubs. Eriksen knows that’s something he has to improve on and since the winter break he’s been doing so.

I feel he could do with another season in the Eredivisie but that seems highly unlikely. He’ll only stay and renew his contract if there won’t be a club interest in him which he’d like to join. Right now, Spurs look favourites to secure the talented Dane’s signature but one thing is for sure: it’s gonna be a hectic summer for Eriksen.
