The Burning Question – Is Dzeko’s Bandwagon More Boselli than Michu?

Pre-season friendlies can be a double-edged sword for Fantasy managers. A couple of good performances over the summer can lend their way to the most unlikely bandwagons as we seek out the in-form protagonists ahead of the campaign’s kick-off.

We’ve been here before. Even experienced Fantasy managers were fooled by former Wigan man Mauro Boselli – the Argentine produced the goods in back-to-back pre-seasons only to fall flat on his face when the real action ensued. On the other side of the coin, there’s someone like Michu, who racked up the goals for Swansea last summer and hit the ground running from Gameweek 1.

As we cast an eye over City’s summer results, Edin Dzeko’s four-goal exploits have turned a few heads. With home games against Newcastle and Hull, allied with a trip to Cardiff in the first three fixtures, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have an enticing opening schedule before the first international break comes along. Kindly priced across the Fantasy games, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko has been pencilled into many a squad as we brace ourselves for Saturday’s big kick-off. As the Bosnian’s bandwagon edges towards 12% ownership (more than any City midfielder or attacker) we turn to our contributors for some opinions.

Mark says…
Let’s look at the facts. Dzeko has started six of City’s seven pre-season matches, including last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal. Over that spell, he’s repaid the faith shown by Pellegrini by notching four goals. Unlike Roberto Mancini, the Chilean has rewarded Dzeko for his scoring rate with regular starts and has taken time to single the Bosnian out for praise. So, despite a wealth of attacking options, including a new £48m strike duo of Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, we can surely expect Dzeko to get the nod when Newcastle visit the Etihad next weekend.

Now consider this. Dzeko was given just 16 league starts by Mancini. Despite this, he notched 14 goals and, significantly, whilst on the pitch, either scored or assisted 40% of City’s goals. In contrast, David Silva was involved in just 24%.

Hands up – I’m a Dzeko fan – while I acknowledge his sometimes awkward style, his propensity to switch off and go missing for lengthy spells, I’ve always been willing to back his instinct to find the net. Give Dzeko minutes and he’ll score goals. He proved it last season. He’s proved over the summer. He’ll likely remain a rotation risk all season long but if Pellegrini gives him starts in the first three Gameweeks, I think Dzeko could be a huge bandwagon going into the international break with the wildcards fluttering.

Disclaimer: I backed Boselli.

Applebonkers says…
Dzeko seems quite a simple formula. Dzeko + minutes = points. He’s never been pretty but he gets the job done with goals and, to a lesser extent, assists, which essentially is all that matters for us, if not fully for real life managers. With Aguero having fallen behind fitness and match sharpness and Silva being used more on the left than in the hole in pre-season it seems like just Dzeko, Negredo and Jovetic for two spots, in which case I think one spot is Dzeko’s to lose early doors.

Reverting back to the formula, 7.5 therefore looks like a tantalising price, especially given the costs of his attacking team-mates. Once Aguero is up to full speed it surely complicates matters more as I also believe Jovetic is the perfect flexible striker for Pellegrini.

I like Dzeko as an individual punt. I don’t, however, if one of several risks being taken. The Gameweek 3 absence of Chelsea and Villa assets means our squads will already be stretched, narrowing the margin for error. In a week where we’ll need our starters to be reliable and bench options to step up, Dzeko’s uncertainty of game time may well spell trouble.

Andy says…
I’ll be honest – all of the Edin Dzeko talk really confuses me. It’s not to say that I think he’ll be comparable to Mauro Boselli – I’d like it on record that I do think he’s a decent, competent striker – but it’s more that I’m somewhat agog that he seems to have been elevated to a status I don’t think he deserves.

I just don’t quite believe that he will be utilised as frequently as is mooted, and either the manager is simply trying to boost the morale one of his squad members or has got his words in a mix. When you’ve got Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic in direct competition for places, I just don’t see Dzeko standing up to the challenge.

If I’m wrong and Manuel Pellegrini really is going to rely on the Bosnian to lead his attack then the 7.5 striker jumps out as a Fantasy option to be reckoned with. This Fantasy manager, however, is going to need to see the proof before he’s willing to sample the goal pudding.

Jonty says…
With 30 goals in 76 appearances for City and 66 in 111 appearances at his previous side VfL Wolfsburg, Dzeko is certainly more Michu than Boselli on paper. With Aguero and new boys Jovetic and Negredo vying for game time, plus an abundance of attacking talent in midfield, Dzeko looks set for another season of rotation.

Manuel Pellegrini has come out publicly in declaring Dzeko as his “main striker” but this statement may have been lost in translation. Did he really mean that Dzeko was his number one choice, or just praising his talents as centre forward to keep him on side? Those words are far more likely to keep Dzeko warm and happy when he sits on the bench than if Pellegrini had said the truth, ‘he’s a pretty good striker, but they are ten a penny at our club.’

In terms of minutes he is certainly likely to be more Boselli than the Swansea man: Michu is as “nailed on” as they come. But does the uncertainty of Dzeko’s starts matter all that much? He has already proved that as a sub he can still damage opposition defences. He started just 16 Premier League matches last season yet still managed a respectable 14 goals. It took Southampton’s Rickie Lambert 35 starts to get just one more than Dzeko last season. It’s worth noting that both are priced at 7.5 this time around.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

My initial team was as follows before walcott got injured.
      Migs (Lewis)
      Yanga-Mbiwa Mertesacker Cuellar (Brayford Ward)
      Hazard Coutinho Walcott Hazard (Lucas)
      Benteke Soldado Lukaku.
If Walcott is match fit for week one vs villa I will play him and use the 11 above but if he is not...

Which team would you choose and why?
      A) The Non-RVP team
      Migs (Lewis)
      Yanga-Mbiwa Mertesacker Brayford (Turner Ward)
      Hazard Coutinho Silva Cazorla (Lucas)
      Lukaku Benteke Soldado

      B) The RVP team, I am only considering this because Walcott could be injured.
      Boruc (Davis)
Yanga Mbiwa Mertesacker Brayford (Turner Ward)
      Hazard Coutinho Silva Ramires (Lucas)
      Lukaku Benteke RVP

Lukaku is looking more and more of a risk especially since Torres has not been selected for Spain. Lukaku also proved that he can score goals coming off the bench so it could also really pay off for you.

With Dzeko being prices at 7.5, which is a bargain for a Man City forward, do you guys think he will do well in the opening 3 gameweeks? My plan as of now is to select him for my team, then ship him out after the opening 3 gameweeks considering by then the striker-rotation will be in full affect.

It's only a bargain if he gets the game time. He will definitely do well if he gets that game time, but it's far from secure.

Lots of Premier League teams are playing nobodies and conceding goals. Swansea have also scored bucketloads.

I thought Swansea dominated against Malmo despite the 0-0 scoreline? I know the players are professionals and all, but they won't be motivated for a dead rubber vs Malmo compared to Utd at home.

Playing Sky FF myself but its a tad complicated this year and seems high maintenance now that I've got the hang of the rules. Depends how much time you have.

Btw I've been trying to bring back the coziness and the energy from the FFS CL through this game called the Transfer Window Simulation (TWS - see my link). Ran a pilot over the summer along with Isacki, ends in Aug and its been a lot of fun. Plan to run a proper version of it over the season, hope you can get involved buddy....

Sky is not for me, I need low maintenance.

I saw the TWS, actually. Looked fun, but I didn't have the time. Maybe I will during the year. How would the proper version differ?

Not much Newman except hoping for more quality (from us and participants like YOU). Learning from lessons in the pilot to make it even more fun

Just a preview. It's a team game, so imagine the fun having stimulating discussions with the people you like talking to. Also it has a component where you can interact with people outside your teams. So you can imagine where the coziness comes in...which is what I really miss 🙂

With the Liverpool rumours breaking in the last few hours of maybe bidding for Willian, and Suarez to stay, that could actually make them a legitimately formidable force this season.

But I should remember that nothing works out how my 'optimistic fan' outlook hopes, but just think of this front 4:

    Sturridge
    Willian, Coutinho, Suarez

That is ridiculously good, definitely top 4 quality, would only describe Chelsea and City as having a better front 4 than that.

Something will happen to spoil my hopes i'm sure, but after thinking Suarez would leave with no replacement this has given me a shot of optimism that we might actually challenge for the top 4, rather than just limp into 6th/7th.

    Thoughts?

As much as I have slated Liverpools chances of challenging for anything over the past few seasons, that would be a formidable front 4. If it happens though, and that's a big If.

I think he will, he'll apologise, he's just come out saying 'the support of the fans convinced me'
        By which he means:
'Oh shit, i'm not going to be allowed to move, am I? Well I don't really want to get booed every week, so better say something placatory'

We'll play him, and sell him next summer if we don't get CL so the saga is over.
Or we do get CL, he stays for another season, and we try to forget about everything he said. Then he moves abroad after another year anyway. (a la Tevez at City)

hate to say it but i agree that's a pretty mean looking front 4. at the same time, i'm not exactly convinced by sturridge and coutinho on the strength of such a short period, suarez remains a liability with a ban in progress, and willian isn't "prem proven" if that means anything.

i think you'll improve on last year, but top 4 may be too large of a leap.

With no changes to the current squad? 6th

With a decent CB, new LB, and an left sided attacking mid (not necessarily WIllian) then at least a challenge for 4th, even if we ultimately (probably) fall short

Top 7 for sure, maybe fighting for 4th but finishing 5th.

There's an awful lot that can happen over 38 games. Suarez might just be back with his best form for Liverpool. Coutinho and Sturridge could bring their last seasons form with them.

Sterling could be awesome (only if he stays out of jail), Toure could turn out to be one of the best buys of the season.

Or Suarez is sold in January, Agger moves to Barca, Sturridge gets one of his injuries that keeps him out for a while, Aspas turns into the next Suarez.

Who knows? I for one am ready for the bumpy yet amazing ride.

You can like players who play for your rivals.

I mean I respect Giggs and Scholes, and still quite like RVP despite the shirt he wears, you can't be completely biased, Willian will be a good player whether he goes to Liverpool or not

Too much oomph though, needs a direct player.

Why would Liverpool want Nani though? He had one great season a couple of years ago, but right now he's crap, not really top quality.

By direct, do you mean physical?
In that case, yes, our midfield could probably do with a bit more physicality, can be a bit lightweight

Nani isn't done Archie. He had two tough season, fitness-wise. When fully fit, he's a beast and he showed that in the Euros.

Indeed, more physical and more goal-scoring ability. Think you'd agree any one of that front 4 are known for their finishing.

Liverpool definitely have £25m+ to spend and are looking to bring in a marquee attacking player which is irrelevant of Suarez leaving or not. Having missed out on their first two options at least I believe that the Willan links are real and like with the other targets it will come down to whether they can convince the player to sign (the club will sell).

If you then put Gerrard and Lucas behind that front 4 you have to put them up there in the top 4 hunt without a doubt.

i really think the bale questions should wait until after the wales game. if he doesn't get any minutes, or looks unfit/sluggish, i'm gonna be content with leaving him out even if he's staying. if he's charging around like a beast, i'm gonna have to prepare to put him back in, 'cause it's starting to look like he's going nowhere. daniel levy is one tough mofo.

My initial team was as follows before walcott got injured.
    Migs (Lewis)
    Yanga-Mbiwa Mertesacker Cuellar (Brayford Ward)
    Hazard Coutinho Walcott Hazard (Lucas)
    Benteke Soldado Lukaku.
If Walcott is match fit for week one vs villa I will play him and use the 11 above but if he is not...

Which team would you choose and why?
    A) The Non-RVP team
    Migs (Lewis)
    Yanga-Mbiwa Mertesacker Brayford (Turner Ward)
    Hazard Coutinho Silva Cazorla (Lucas)
    Lukaku Benteke Soldado

    B) The RVP team, I am only considering this because Walcott could be injured.
    Boruc (Davis)
Yanga Mbiwa Mertesacker Brayford (Turner Ward)
    Hazard Coutinho Silva Ramires (Lucas)

      B. firstly, it has RVP. secondly, cazorla is at least a slight doubt due to the spain friendly (i think he's in the squad, no?). thirdly, i don't think migs is a good enough upgrade on southampton keepers to spend 1.0 on him.

personally i'd probably try to get ramires upgraded to lamps, and have soldado instead of benteke, but these are minor quibbles 😉

Didn't look at the actual teams but I assume the non-RVP one must be better because he is not worth 14.0m.

He is not Ronaldo at the heights of his FPL glory and he has a dodgy team around him. He was the best striker in the FPL last season though.... so what?

the best striker by 50 points last season, and the best player by 50 points if bale leaves. that's 100 points extra if you're captaining him every time.

the best player in the league, playing for arguably the best team in the league (certainly top 3 still), and nailed on, and on set pieces, and etc

That was last season, things have changed, new players have arrived and managers have swapped.

RVP did me proud last season but he's still not worth anywhere near 14.0m with the talent that has joined the FPL recently.... imho.

he was amazing the previous season too with a comparatively crappy team, let's not forget.

i'm playing devil's advocate to an extent 'cause i'm not starting with him myself, but i think you'd be insane to avoid him throughout the year. when a good string of fixtures come utd's way the people captaining him are just gonna storm away

then again, i personally think there's a serious lack of good value attacking talent in fpl this season (much like last season actually). i guess you disagree?

With Collins place under threat by Tomkins.

I'm looking at the 5.0 range now.

Reid is the safe pick. But what's the view on Rat? Should be more attacking, but is he nailed on?

Sloan Stephens is beating Sharapova at the moment... Missed a 13 team parlay when Germany Under 21s could not score vs France Under 21s - despite being better.

Hi All... Curious what folks think of my team. This is only my second year - so I'm still fairly new at this (be kind)...

    Mignolet (Davis)
Koscielny, Coleman, Ivanovic (Chester and Parr)
    Hazard, Walcott, Coutinho, Mirallas (Kim)
    Benteke, Lukaku, Dzeko

After GW1 drop Ivanovic and pick up a 5.0 defender (e.g. Rat?)
After GW2 drop Lukaku and pick up Bony or Soldado or Sturridge

    Thanks!

I like the team & the plan.. I would change out a striker before you change your defense.. unless you like Lukaku's chances against Man U.. considering how he finished last season.. I might take my chances.. Overall..in my humble opinion.. looking good!

Thanks (and to you too TEXANRED) - much appreciated! My thoughts were to keep Lukaku for the MANU match after what I watched (in horror) last May when he shredded United's Defense! Thoughts on Bony vs. Sturridge vs. Soldado? I like Bony longer term, but his early season fixtures aren't great. Not sure if Soldado will catch fire that quickly. Sturridge always seems to be hurt...
