Season Predictions 2013/14 – The View From The Scouts

We wanted to post this before deadline this morning but, due to our technical issues, we were unable to take that opportunity. Rather than waste the chance to embarrass ourselves, however, we thought we’d stick these up this evening, regardless.

Last season many of us were left red-faced thanks to our terrible predictions for the 2012/13 season.

I was left particularly embarrassed with my now laughable assertion that Charles N’Zogbia would be last season’s best differential. Meanwhile Granville’s predictions that Sam Alladyce would be the first boss to bite the bullet and Shinji Kagawa would be the season’s top assister also failed to materialise.

Credit though went to Anorak for correctly predicting that Michu would be the year’s star budget midfielder. Hard to believe the attacking midfielder was initially priced at just 6.5m at the start of last season. Mark’s prediction that Rickie Lambert would shine in the budget forward category also proved correct.

But enough of last year, here’s our thoughts on the season ahead for you to bookmark and use to embarrass/congratulate us as the season progresses.

Moderator Evs knows all about Top 5s, he was a top 5 player at the end the FPL 2012/13 season and was even in with a shout of winning the competition on the final day. Will his experience reap dividends when it comes to predicting the 2013/14 season?

Does anyone else feel that Wenger (and yes, I am going to pick on him sense he once smugly said he is in complete control of transfer policy, he made his bed and now he gets to lie in it) is like a recovering drug addict in that he will repeatedly make the same self-destructive mistakes (selling a star player or create situations where the player has leverage and won't sign) and only after hitting rock bottom (8-2 Man Utd loss, anyone?) will he change his ways. Signing Podolski, Mertesacker, Cazorla and Monreal in the winter seemed to show a sign of improvement. Hell, we even managed to commit Walcott to a new deal, and silenced Sagna's complaints and didn't lose him either. But then the relapse happened, and surprise surprise, it happened subtly. "we don't need to spend that much on Higuain" "We only need to spend just over 40 million to trigger Suarez clause, lets only pay one more pound! Yes...yes..."

It's unnerving how similar the comparison is.

the only good thing is Baker could be back soon. Before the blank.

Brayford was seriously disappointing. Should of done more research.

And that last minute downing signing just fooked R morrison sideways.

Overall pretty bad for the blank.

I got 45 points, with only Hazard, Lukaku and Jonny Williams to play. -_- However on the bright side I think I nailed a good cheap defense early and my RVP team looks promising with only minimal surgery needed. Look at the positives, it's only GW1.

        similar to this..
42, toure, coleman collins did well.. turner/burner played

Chose foster over boruc and got stun but at least positive looking forward..

My mids- disaster- Mirrallas, wally, snoddy with hazard9Koren) to play

Rvp - great with lukaku and dzeko... hopefully coming good too..

Got coleman and have mirallas ( so no barkley)

Lukaku and Dzeko may struggle with minutes..
May need to replace either pronto..

    Bony, Some Newcastle... Giroud..??

My plan before today was Lukaku and Lampard to Lambert and Mirallas. That hasn't changed.

Replace Lukaku before Dzeko, not sure why you picked Dzeko if you're already looking to sell? Depends on your funds but Lambert, Soldado or Sturridge.

depends on what happens in Chelsea matches

        - my itch is to go from Hazard to Santi, and ride Lukaku one more week until there's a clear striker to go get
        - my reality is I probably have to ditch Lukaku first

anyway, no more transfers until Wednesday earliest... after Chelsea and Arsenal games are done 'til Saturday...

and don't listen to me... I'm at the bottom of every table... and it's going to be a long climb

I see Hazard as more of a long term pick so intend to ride out the blank with him. Plenty of strikers getting in the goals today and more to come over the next 2 days.

Kind of agree on Haz except the rotation risk chances...

Either Coutinho or Hazard are getting ejected for Santi if I can find a way. Haz has a blank, Coutinho doesn't. Not enthusiastic about the choice... just need to dig out of my hole and stick with the remnants of my plan (minus Koscielny).

Did the bonus pts surprise anyone besides me? I'm presuming the formula has changed a little this year. Defenders appear to have received a boost, to the detriment of forwards. For example, Sturridge got 0, Hangeland got 3, Lovren got 3

How is the BPS score calculated?

Players score BPS points based on the following statistics (one point for each unless otherwise stated):

      Playing in a game
      Playing over 60 minutes
      Scoring goals
      Goalkeepers and defenders (4 points)
      Midfielders (6 points)
      Fowards (8 points)
      Assists (3 points)
Goalkeepers and defenders keeping a clean sheet (4 points)
      Saving a penalty (5 points)
      For every 3 saves
For every 3 open play crosses
Creating a big chance (a chance where the receiving player should score)
For every 8 clearances, blocks and interceptions (total)
      For every 8 recoveries
      Providing 3 key passes
      Making 3 successful tackles (net*)
Scoring the goal that wins a match
Pass Completion (after making at least 30 passes)
      70% completion (1 point)
      80% completion (2 points)
      90% completion (3 points)
*Net successful tackles is the total of all successful tackles minus any unsuccessful tackles. Players will not be awarded negative BPS points for this statistic.

Players lose BPS points based on the following statistics (one point for each unless otherwise stated):

      Conceding a penalty
      Missing a penalty (-2 points)
      Yellow cards
      Red cards (-3 points)
      Own goals (-2 points)
      Missing a big chance
Making an error which leads to a goal
Every 2 errors leading to an attempt at goal
      Being tackled 3 times
      Conceding 2 fouls
      Being caught offside 3 times
Missing the target with 3 shots

Michu or Bony - who looked more fixture proof today? I thought Swansea looked pretty good except for getting pulled apart by RVP, Rooney & Welbeck 4 times 😉

Bony looks like he can score if he gets the ball, seemed slow to find himself though, I'd go with Michu despite the fact I just got Bony.

Sturridge will score a lot this year.

If you try to beat the entire team and never pass and shoot every time you can, your bound to score a lot.

Seriously. How greedy is he with the ball.
FPL wise, that is a beautiful thing if you have him.
Horrible if you have his team mates though.

I think he looks a lot more confident this season too, the way he was receiving the ball with his back to the goal and playing with it at his feet. Gonna be a good season for him. Will be good if you have a midfielder like Coutinho too, lots of assists going to come from him I reckon

yes... there's lots of knee jerks, more so early in the season...

(I should know... I seem to average 2.5 transfers a week the first few weeks before I settle in to avoiding hits for most of the rest of the season... which is BAD... all those 4 point hits matter... and often a player just needs one more week to get healthy and/or find their form)

Foster / Boruc - perfect example why I decided to not go with a keeper rotation this year. I know it's only one week, but you will end up picking the 'wrong' one too many times.

thats one way to look at it, and you have to admit, the penalty save is a freak occurence, so lets ignore the 5 + 3 bp as a result..

Now lets say you still benched boruc and played foster, if boruc gets a cleanie the next week and foster the week after, thats still outscoring mignolet isnt it over the 3..

the point of rotating goalkeepers is fixture coverage..

But if you're talking about the mental agony of having keeper points on the bench, yeah i feel you there, experiencing it right now 🙁 . Had lambert too so it softened the blow

They played with 4 at the back, Coleman & Baines on the right but pushing forward lots. In terms of style they tried to play a passing/possession game but were a bit slow in build up and had lots of possession in their own half. Coleman was good but I'm not knee-jerking yet.
