The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Walcott will come good. He's still injured I think. He takes corners, free kicks, no Chamberlain so he's again the only pacey option with the through balls.

He's not even sure of a place unless he's taking Gibson's slot on the strength of one match. Could work out of course but so risky I think it is an absurd purchase now.

Good fixtures. But I'm concerned he's not anywhere as good as people make him out to be. He's also absent on set pieces and PKs which is a concern for a mid-table striking option.

I'd rather stick with tried and tested with either Berbatov or Lambert. Dzeko as well maybe if he looks likely to get starts.

Coleman has 33400 transfers in and 600 out so he needs about 4000 more in (assuming fiso have guessed the threshold correctly)

Not sure when those figures are from 4Vets but these are from 20.30hrs For some reason not updated since then.

              Coleman EVE 5.0 33454
              Barkley EVE 4.5 42660

Unless there is some strange fiddle going on at FPL Towers, the extra six hours transfers should take both well over the threshold. IMHO. 😉
There was at times interference in the free and fair transfer counting last year and the ridiculous non counting of transfers when a team has a blank week is the most infuriating bit.

This is from over an hour ago.

How important is making team value as part of our overall strategy?

Last season I knew nothing of FFS or FISO and subsequent price changes. I took a real interest and built up a team value that allowed me an 'extra big hitter'.

As part of my strategy this year im going early and bringing a bandwagon player in. Why? Look at recent articles entitled 'knee jerk' and thats whats casuals do. Ive seen people say on here how are people going to get RvP in? Simple a 12pt hit or a gw2 wc. Seeing as so many casuals play early on then fade away to leave a ghost team im going to the theory that casuals highly impact price changes in the opening gameweeks and a pair of 4pt hits might put you closer to RvP and a decent side.

I can offer my experience, last season I focused too much on catching prices rises, using 4 point hits to do so if required, and it led to my worst overall result EVER. This was a contributing (the other was playing a rotation of keepers & defenders).

The guy who beat me in ML had a team value under 100 mil for half the season. The game is to have the most points not the highest value and I for one have learnt this the hard way.

So while team value allows you more $ to get higher point returning players, be sure you dont let it become the priority in making transfer decisions

I dont mean letting the tail wag the dog and value at all costs but sensible buys to add to what I thinks a decent opening team ive put together. As Declan said the Coleman, Shaws of FPL. Guys in MLs im in have good ranks and high team values.

It is a viable strategy if the players you are getting are nailed. Players like Whittaker and Barkley aren't. Mignolet, Coleman and Shaw in are sensible but others aren't

These players are the ones ... Coleman, Shaw etc guys who I rate, who I had in my draft or consideration at some point and who if I dont get now before scramble to get RvP I may be priced out of a move or miss cashing in their value down the line such as January wc.

Following form and fixtures week by week is a strategy that begets a high value team without high value being the goal in itself. Spending points in the beginning of the season to build value is a potent strategy for success.

I think RVP, Soldado, Benteke and someone from Liverpool (and maaaybe Rooney if he goes to Chelsea) will be the best forwards this year, I don't think you can only go for three and stick with them, will need to be chopped and changed around so it's not as easy as "ah well I have Lambert, RVP and Tekkers" and thinking your forward line is that for the season.. Just sayin 🙂

Today was Hull and Wed is villa buddy....so the easier game has passed.

Lamps was the most likely to score for us...2-3 shots on target apart from the pen and FK, all great chances. Considering keeping him now....looks like Mourinho might play him a lot.

Well the positive is that you don't have to worry about xfering a 4th DGWer out.

You sold on Coleman? I'm waiting. I reckon Everton won't keep many CS like last season under Martinez and I don't fancy depending on a defender for attacking points. Also I really fancy owning a Chelsea defender long-term. Ivano was superb today again and a constant attacking threat.

Point noted but still nervous what we're going to get with City. Hope Big Daddy works out well for you tmr.

I guess I'm not sold on Coleman: just bitter. I would be having a much better gameweek if he had just done nothing! I still think he is a steal for 5 mil, and I think he will be involved in a lot of their offense.

I think I am gonna keep lamps for a while, as well. Either Dzeko or Ivan will be my transfer this week. (I heard Ivan almost scored too! the injustice!)

Keeping Ivan long term? Surely madness with United and the blank coming. Unless you think Chelsea will do well next week? Other problem is that Ivan will be rotated: just too much competition there. I'm thinking I wait on Nasty and get him in this week.

Yeah, Dzeko is my last hope at having an above average GW. I mean, I guess Lamps could have another stormer, too. The Villa game will be very telling, I think, for who can be counted on to start regularly. You gotta think Mata will come in and bump someone. (hopefully De Bruyne)

What are the odds of Lamps and Ivan being every weekers, in your educated opinion?

                Pretty good imo.

As I said sometime back, Jose has a few untouchables and I think Lamps is one of them. He moved to a 433 towards the end in which Lamps and Ramires are detrimental. The only thing that hinders Lamps is his age, but knowing the effort he puts into himself, he can play a lot (Villa is on Wed and United on Mon - pretty good gap).

If Nasty is fit, I'm with you on that transfer too. Wonder if he will slot in straightaway though. Else I'm looking to move Lamps or Hazard, our defence is going to be the main source of points this season. Surely if there's rotation, it will be more in the front 4 as we saw today.

Essien and Mikel only competing for the other spot i think. Lamps only competition in the advanced pivot is MvG.

easier game has passed but I wouldn't be surprised to see you guys put more past villa. today after lamps scored your level of play really dropped off and you didn't look as threatening. against villa I think you'll keep a higher level of play and be threatening throughout cuz you won't be able to afford to go into a lull like you did today. not to mention a goal or two from benteke or agbon will push you to score more

I had Coleman from this week. I think they'll still keep a decent number of cs but not as many as last year persay but coleman also has attacking threat. at 5.0 I put him second only to toure

don't you worry that azpi will take the rb spot from Ivan? his lack of quickness hurt him on several occasions today

I can see him, Hazard, and Lukaku all having breakout seasons this year or next

thinking I want a chelsea attacker long term but not sure if I should keep Oscar or Hazard through the blank.... 😕 any thoughts?

Oscar's going to be rotated with Mata/De Bruyne, so Hazard is the safe pick.

I'm thinking Lampard is the best FPL pick from Chelsea at the moment along with a defender.

yeah you're probably right. if Oscar was to start the next two though maybe worth keeping him instead?

maybe. he did look good today. but don't you worry about him being rotated more?

and given the fact I don't have a defender at the moment (tripled on chelsea attack) I'll wait til after the blank at least to consider bringing one in. and even then i'm not sure I want one as I prefer a cheaper defense (happy with toure, coleman, shaw, collins, mturner at the moment)

So I Don't know if you guys remember last year or not, but I created a league called "Half as Good."

    Here are the details...

The objective of this league is to score 50% or higher of the GW's highest score.
Anyone that does not score this 50% or better in the GW will be booted from the league
All calculations ending in .5 will be rounded up to the nearest whole number

Example: GW high = 97 points... 97/2 = 48.5 which is rounded up to 49, anyone not scoring 49 or higher in the group would be booted.

This competition will begin on GW 4.

If there is a GW that would normally remove the remaining teams from the league because they failed to score 50% or more of the GW's highest, then of the remaining teams, the highest score wins.

    League Code: 11392-520910

Is Van Wolfswinkel nailed on as starter or will he be a regular rotation risk with Hooper?

      I don't think he is.

The competition was pretty tough anyways, figured I'd rather play a cash league with noobs like my friends/colleagues playing.
