The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

Don't have enough cash, and need to replace my two cheap strikers....I don't like it when my players don't have guaranteed gametime, and it's clear that both Lukaku and J.Rod will be suspect to rotation.

    Mignolet
    Coleman / Ivanovic / Chester
Hazard / Walcott / Silva (vc) / Coutinho
    Lukaku / Rodriguez / Soldado (c)

    Marshall / Yoshida / Kim / Turner

I am guessing I will have to sacrifice one of my midfielders to upgrade my striker-force. Suggestions?

      You need either :
Bentekke - nailed on / pens
Sturridge - nailed on (Suarez effect comming)
Rvp - nailed on /pens / frees / Corners Expensive tho And surgery maybe
Rvw - tad unknown / decent punt
      Bony - Mmm ???
      Berba - prob 15 goals
      Lambert - prob 15 goals / rotation / Gametime
Osvaldo - part of the new Soton revolution
Well beck - too puny IMO
      Rooney - monitor
Aguero / Negredo - should do well
      Giroud - prob 15-20 goals
      Lots to think about.

Well, Spurs need a little more firepower upfront. I think we have got a stellar midfield, and I am expecting Spurs to rack up clean sheets this time around. It's the creativity upfront that I'm worried about. Anyways, most of Spurs goal will involve Soldado some way or the other, so I'd recommend him.

    Best option to replace Lukaku..?
    No money in the bank..

I ll def wait until the villa game but think he will always be a rotation risk..

    Mirralas, Snodgrass, Wally, Hazard, Koren..
    RvP , Dzeko, luk.

My attack ATM .. 0.0 in bank..
May need a double transfer with that lot...

Mertesacker to coleman for a hit? Coleman will be a good bandwagon, and when they go 3-4-3 he will be even more needed. I also have 3 Chelsea, but I am looking at this as an extra hit, Cant really see mert getting a cleanie in his next 2 either now with kosh out for Fulham.

don't think mert out for a nit when you have 3 chelsea players is justifiable. i prioritized kosc>coleman because i had kosc, though with 3 chelsea players even MY transfer may have been ill-advised. mert has some attacking potential and fulham isn't the craziest attacking force.

deal with your chelsea contingent and maybe look at mert prior to the NLD should you really not fancy arsenal defense moving forward.

Totally agree, I'd even say a cap of 0.2 per week wouldn't be a bad idea. Spiralling price rises make the game less fun in my opinion... They're also a self fulfilling prophecy because more people make transfers to catch the price rises, which means more price rises ad infinitum.

So am I understanding fiso right? When the player reaches it's NTI target it's price rise 0.1 in the early hours of the morning. So when the % in the last column is at 100%

How does it work for fallers? Do they need to drop to -100% in the final column?

Fiso is not entirely accurate. It is just their well calculated 'best guess' as to the system FPL actually use.

It will only ever be 0.1 rise and then the count resets.

Only one game. Can't judge him on that and I thought he made the best of a bad service.

If we were stupid enough to judge a player on just one game we would all be idiotically buying Barkley and Coleman in our thousands!

Agreed. Was a shocking game for Spurs, should have been easy, but wasn't. I was impressed with Crystal Palace, not sure they can keep that pace up all season, but it must have been a morale boosting first game. Felt especially bad for Moxey, didn't deserver to give away a penalty like that, had been great all game.

I was hoping for more from Soldaro, but looking at his style of play he needs the right ball in to the box, not sure he's going to get that at Spurs, especially if Bale goes.

    Morning

Propping up the mods and contributors league 🙁 but strangely feel pretty good about my side. Migs isn't going to get 15 points every week, Coleman the same. Got to stick with my plans for RVP.

On the other hand, Giroud, Hazard, Coutinho and Soldado are all right up there for any members around 🙂

Only regret I have is my risky punt on Altidore. But he looked quite dangerous so fingers crossed he does well.

Also I chose Ivan and Lampard instead of Terry and Oscar. The bonus points and penalty miss really got me there ^_^

I have 48 points this week and I feel depressed. Is this justifiable? Mignolet's penalty save and 3 BPs have really annoyed me considering I had him until late on Friday night.

What can I do with this lot?

    Boruc (Foster)
    Toure Coleman Chester (Rat Baker)
    Hazard Walcott Mirallas Coutinho (Morrison)
    Anelka Lukaku RVP

Thinking Lukaku > Lambert/Dzeko, and using the extra £0.5m to get Mignolet and Collins in at a later date.

Lukaku might get game time yet this week and with Utd next week, Mourinho might play him after his hattrick last season.
I think I'd be more worried about Anelka and the player who aren't any getting game time.
