The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Romelu Lukaku is rested to the bench as Fernando Torres leads the line in the first match of Chelsea’s double. Oscar proves his differential status by grabbing the opener from his role in “the hole”, while Roberto Soldado opens his Tottenham account with a coolly-converted spot-kick at Selhurst Park.

The Game Changer

While Chelsea eased past Hull at the Bridge, Tottenham’s narrow victory came courtesy of their summer signing from Valencia. Andre Villas-Boas’ side rolled up to Palace without last term’s talisman Gareth Bale and with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Christian Benteke, Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge opening their accounts on Saturday, Roberto Soldado’s 15% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners were desperate for a response from their 9.5 investment.

The Spaniard may have looked sluggish but eventually delivered thanks to a smartly converted spot-kick. His manager duly admitted post-match that Soldado’s still lacks “sharpness”. Despite this, the numbers suggest good things to come: Soldado had more shots on target and created more goalscoring opportunities than any Spurs player.

A guaranteed starter, whether in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, he now sets his sights on a run of four home fixtures (SWA, NOR, WHM, HUL) and also has trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks.

For those eyeing up an exit route for Romelu Lukaku or who simply cannot stomach shelling out 14.0 for Van Persie, Soldado certainly presents an option if he can, as Villas-Boas’ suggests, sharpen up in the weeks to come. Conceivably, he could even become an armband contender over Tottenham’s favourable run.

The Underused

Oscar went into today’s clash firmly in the shadow of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in terms of FPL ownership. Typically, however, he stepped up to deliver and outscore both. Moved to the role in “the hole” behind Fernando Torres, the Brazilian – with less than 5% ownership – continued the form that saw him score in three of his last five starts in 2012/13 by poking home the opener at the Bridge.

Mourinho has already suggested he is likely to field the playmaking skills of Oscar centrally more often this season but with Mata warming the bench for the entire match, there’s every possibility the Brazilian could be ousted from the XI for Wednesday’s game with Villa, with Jose giving the Spaniard a run-out. Furthermore, the introduction of Marco Van Ginkel and subsequent shift to a 4-3-3 merely compounds the potential headache we could face this season, with Chelsea’s midfield boasting an embarrassment of riches.

The Selection Poser

Jose Mourinho’s first teamsheet of the season has already signposted the Fantasy frustration we can expect up front for Chelsea over the upcoming campaign. Romelu Lukaku was the Blues form player over the summer, racking up five goals and a pair of assist across the pre-season fixtures, and was anticipated by many to get the nod as Mourinho welcomed Hull to the Bridge. Instead, it was Fernando Torres who led the line against the Tigers, earning an assist for Lampard’s stunning dead ball strike after being fouled, before making way for the Belgian on 75 minutes.

Today’s XI will, at least, afford Lukaku’s owners a fair degree of optimism ahead of the midweek visit of Villa. Surely he will now return to the starting line-up on Wednesday against Paul Lambert’s side but with a trip to United and a blank Gameweek 3, it seems the exodus is already underway.

        Why so?
Could play next game and if Fellaini goes might be regular after that, no?
I'm seriously thinking Hazard => Barkley
+ sides, good fixture, makes money, has game in gw3, gives me Rvp
        - sides, it's Hazard => Barkley...

Coleman will rack up the points as an OOP defender, whereas Barkley isn't going to be as explosive as that week in week out - I'd expect a lot of 2 pointers.

Anyone else noticed how much this bonus system seems to favour defenders ?

Apart from goalscorers, defenders have racked up bonus points across all the games.

Lovren and Hangeland 3 for example.

Is it worth having 3 defenders you think will keep the most clean sheets ?

Players like Cole, G Johnson, Zabaleta, K Walker worth investing in this season ?

Aye, Lovren has me tempted to replace my chelsea def. I guess it's BPS madness t pick him over Shaw/Clyne though.

I think defensive clearances and tackles have a big weight. It seems to make CB more likely to get BPs than LBs/RBs. You want LBs/RBs who attack a lot and create chances / assist. At the moment, I mostly have CBs but will consider offensive players like Coleman, Shaw, Zabaleta, etc... Shaw's average position was impressiely high on the pitch

based on what? from preseason i've noticed that most of the time he has his back faced to goal recieving the ball and letting others come into play making michu et all better options. he's good i agree, but might as well wait until tottenham and wba out of the way and watch him closely for GW 4

The funny thing is, despite my midfield blanking, I'm quite happy with it.

The points will come for Coutinho and 'Azard, based on their weekend performances, and Walcott might need to play up top again before long!

He suffered from us being too defensive in the last 60 minutes. He was playing waaaaaay too deep. Looked really sharp in the start, I wouldn't worry.

Coleman was always good value. If I didn't have him already I would probably be switching out a Chelsea def and jumping on that price rise.

If I could gamble now a little bit with my team, I'd bring Rosicky in. He was quite good vs Villa and he can see some decent minutes with Gunners' running out of options in the mid-line

Like a lot of people on here, I have plans to transfer Lukaku out this week. His replacement is an interesting question, and will depend on your WC strategy and any funds you held back from GW1.

For me, there are no funds, and I plan to WC after GW3, so I think the options come down to:

    1) Lambert. On form, on set pieces, good fixtures. Only downside is he may suffer from rotation given the recent new signing of Osvaldo

    2) Dzeko. On form, great fixtures, great team. Big downside here is rotation. Hull and Cardiff are about as good as it gets for an attacking player from Man City - perhaps tonight will give us some intel on his starting prospects.

    3) Berbatov. On pens and against a patched up ARS defence. Nailed on starter but tougher fixtures.

    4) Jelavic. Seemingly in favour again at Everton and they have 2 great fixtures.

    Have I missed anyone?

I think people need to hold tight for one more game before getting rid. I think he looked a lot better than Torres especially considering they clearly stopped attacking before he came on.

      That said..

      1) Agreed. Although I don't think he will be a rotation risk. At 37 years old I can see J Rod coming on for 15-20 minutes every other game to give Lambert some rest. He will be the one that suffers with Osvaldo's signing. .

      2) I'll reserve judgement until tonight. Lots of people are backing Dzeko. I think a few blanks and he will be quickly out of favour.

      3) Too frustrating for me. 5 blanks then a hat-trick type of guy!

      4) Nothing to add.

      5) Welbeck has got to be worth considering..

Berbatov - nailed on starter, but will he play deeper with Bent up top?

Lambert - how will his gametime/capacity to rack up points be affected by the arrival of Osvaldo?

Any indications Chambers & Whittaker @4m will keep their places? Guessing they will be under threat from Clyne & R.Martin repectively but Whittaker was a regular last season until he got injured...
