The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Monday

City turn on the style as Manuel Pellegrini gets his Etihad tenure up and running with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Newcastle. While the hosts dazzled going forward, their injury problems at the back mounted after their skipper was subbed off before the final whistle:

The Game Changer

With four goals over the pre-season fixtures, Edin Dzeko had finished the summer as top scorer for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The new City boss had responded by suggesting the Bosnian was his main striker – a comment many thought that, somewhere along the line, had been lost in translation.

A brace for Bosnia in last week’s defeat by the USA, however, signalled his form ahead of this evening’s match with Newcastle and Pellegrini backed up his faith by selecting Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic as Sergio Aguero’s partner in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Fantasy managers have been stung by Dzeko before but tonight’s showing is hugely encouraging for a player that is so favourably priced across the Fantasy games. He may have delivered just one assist from this evening’s encounter but his display deserved so much more – he managed an impressive eight shots; equalling the sum total offered by David Silva, Aguero, Yaya Toure and sub Negredo. With a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Hull, he looks the ideal replacement for those looking for an escape route from Romelu Lukaku.

The Underused

Having failed to play all pre-season, Sergio Aguero was treated with caution by Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway. With summer recruits Negredo and Jovetic added to the mix, it looked more likely than Pellegrini would ease him back into the fold for the first three games, affording Aguero time to return to full fitness over September’s international break.

Instead, the Argentine was installed alongside Dzeko for the demolition of Newcastle, with Jovetic unable to even make the bench. As the hosts swept the sorry Magpies aside, Aguero was quick to open his account for the season – slotting home just after 20 minutes to put his side two ahead.

Subbed off just after the hour mark, it’s apparent Pellegrini will remain careful with his game time but, while Robin Van Persie squares up to Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive weeks, Aguero’s 7% Fantasy Premier League ownership makes him a deadly differential for back-to-back showdowns against two promoted sides.

The Selection Poser

The sight of Vincent Kompany limping off with what appeared to be a groin problem leaves Pellegrini sweating on his defensive options ahead of the trip to Wales. With City’s other first-choice central defender Matija Nastasic still to return to action after sustaining an ankle injury over the summer, Joleon Lescott’s security of starts now looks a little more secure at the heart of defence.

Micah Richards’ official twitter account has this evening claimed he, too, is sidelined “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury – potentially, Javi Garcia may have to slot in alongside Lescott if the injuries don’t improve over the weekend. Depending on the Kompany prognosis, Pellegrini may go shopping for cover before the transfer window is closed.

Neither. Get Zabs/Nasty or Dawson IMO. Kompany might be injured, so Vert would win by default if you're hellbent on spending big at the back.

It's too hard to say how either defense will do long term. New manager for city and AVB's tactics are unclear at this point, but will have to change with personnel.

Vertonghen had some great periods last season. I go him for attacking potential. But Komp if you just want solid CS form.

So what should I do with this lot?

    Szczesny, Harper
    Collins, Clyne, Chester, Ward, Toure
    Walcott, Coutinho, R.Morrison, Snodgrass, Hazard
    RVP, Lambert, Lukaku
    No money in the bank.

Currently leaning towards Morrison -> Barkley now and get rid of Lukaku next week for Dzeko or Bony leaving me with a decent team for GW 3 with no point hits.

Any other suggestions? Should I wait til Friday to see if Snoddy will be fully fit?

It's fine. You have the same problem as most with having Lukaku to deal with - plus you already have lambert who was one of the options to transfer him too.

Soldado would be a good pick but would take 2 transfers - one of the mids has to be downgraded to make the extra 1.5m or you can downgrade szczesny to boruc and have strurridge instead.

What are people doing with Lukaku - even if he does do well in his next game he's always going to be a rotation risk so who is the best option to replace him?

Am currently looking at Bony and lambert but Southampton have signed Osvaldo and that is worrying for Lambert owners - will Lambert keep his starting place?

other options are Loic Remy - was injured for MCY away game but now has a good platform of fixtures if Newcastle are going to bounce back, RVW - also has good fixtures and dzeko - rotation risk again.

Lambert is getting old. He's good, but with Rodriguez and Osvaldo, unlikely to see the consistent 90 minutes he needs to repeat last season's performance. Also, with a much better defense this year, Southampton may not be as aggressive. Bony seems fantastic long term.

I've got Oscar and Lukaku and am tempted to keep one and bench them for the blank for now, but who plays this week will have a bearing on my decision.

Aguero is building up his fitness so 90 mins was an ask, given that City spent the best part of £40m on Negredo and Jovetic means Dzeko playing 90 mins makes him less likely to start as Aguero needs minutes for fitness.

Don't get me wrong Dzeko had a good game but it was a bit - should've, could've, didn't against a pitiful Newcastle team. If he'd missed those chances in a close game he'd be getting crucified now.

I think Lukaku might be worth keeping until after the United game at least...
A lot will depend on the next two games..

I have my eye on Bony too but with Swansea facing spurs away, he is not looking the most attractive transfer right now..

I don't understand why so many have ditched Luk already..
(Less so Snodgrass who i also have but anyway)
Torres hardly did enough to justify him being the main striker.

I'm going to get rid of Hazard for Walcott simply because Fulham most likely roll out their second choice keeper Stockdale. Is that a wise choice and if it is should I captain Walcott?

So as someone who watched the entire game did Hazard really play badly? (answering the question would be beneficial to the discussion)

If you are suggesting that one should transfer out Hazard after that game it would be a poor suggestion.

              I watched the match too..

He was head and shoulders above everyone in terms of flicks and class, dribbles etc..
How effective was he? I think he did well..

He was been kicked left, right and centre.
I think Hull really targeted him and this affected his overall play.
On another day against a different opposition things may have been a lot different.. points wise.

I wont be selling anytime soon..
There is a strong chance he wont play on Wednesday tho, I would say..

Think I will go Cole to Nasty instead of Cole to Mert. Cole would be 3rd sub against United followed by a blank so even if Nasty comes back in gw3 it will still work. Can't afford Zab.

Ideally Nasty will fall first, no rush to make the transfer unless it looks like he will play this weekend.

    Long post alert:

There seems to be an opinion amongst peeps here that the new BAPS system are heavily weighed towards defenders, especially CBs who have high passing stats on passing the ball sideways..
I have seen a lot of people considering WC and shifting to a Back 4 or 3 High Priced Defenders.

But something else seems to have gone unnoticed. We have had a highly unusual statistic for Week 1 of the new session. There have been 7 teams who have kept a CS and that keeping in mind w/o a single 0-0 score. Now CSs are highly notorious to predict and I can't bring anything to memory from last year where we have had 7 in a single Gameweek.

Now if we assess the 3 matches where both teams scored :
    Arsenal vs Villa
    Norwich vs Everton
    Swansea vs United

4 defenders did get BAPS , i.e Szezcsny, Clark, Coleman and Whittaker. Out of these gentlemen Szezcsny saved a pen and Coleman and Whittaker scored goals.
Clark is the only exception to the rule but He came on in the 17th minute when Arsenal had already scored their goal and thus technically kept a CS, hence the BAPS.

Now if we consider a classic situation in how important CS is in terms of BAPS:
Consider the Sturridge vs GJ situation.. Sturridge got 7 points and GJ 8.. 1 point meant GJ got the extra 2 BAPS.
Sturridge scored a goal and the winning goal hence received 9 points for that effort, but He lost almost 4 points due to offside and Missing Big chances stats. and then the killer ; had pass completion rate 80% pass stats which helped him get 2 points + the 2 points for playing more than 60 mins and then he is on to his way for 2 BAPS..

Similarly Ivanovic not getting BAPS as compared to other 3 Che def.. Iva had pass completion >70% and received 1 point and the other 3 had pass completion >90% and hence 3 points.. That made all the difference..

Conclusion: I think this weeks BAPS distribution are an askew in a lot of sense. We will be lucky to have another Game Week out of then next 37 in which in only 3 or less matches, Both team will score.. If we can predict the CS we can safely say the defenders are nailed on for BAPS.. If we have a match in which both teams score, it will be the old scenario of the attackers reaping benefits..

      Agreed Djerbil

It's their job to keep cleanies, and only when they do their job are they considered for BAPS. If their only source of BAPS was scoring, this game would be all about 4.5-5 defenders

yes.. when u consider that around 9-10 BAPS points is the threshold for getting BAPS, conceding 1 goal makes a defender lose 5 points, which is almost 50% drop off on the required amount

      Interesting analysis.

It certainly makes choosing attacking defenders a risk. Zabaleta and Ivanovic may be much more aggressive players, but if they don't contribute offensively, their forward position means their pass completion rate is lower than the other defenders and they're less likely to get bonus points.

Well said. I like the way the BAP system has evolved this year in that we at least have a measuring stick that we as players can have a better understanding of. The more that happens, the more they become a real part of the game and thus, our strategy. Taking your "passing" example; I thought when looking at the new system a few days ago that the next step is to have a separate expected standard for defenders and forwards - it's a defenders job to make sure/high % passes while a forward pass is often into much more competitive space. On the other hand forwards would have the edge in rewards for creative balls but will have pts deducted for offsides. Just a thought. Thanks for the post.

Nice post. So if this holds, the somewhat stastically annual tightening up at the back by big clubs in midwinter and through the second half will make those defenders even more valuable, esp. during the January WC.

199 clean sheets out of 380 games last season means 5.24 clean sheets a game. This week was a little high, but not much. I would consider your point about 0-0 draws to be largely irrelevant, because the effect of the other teams defenders getting bps should be counteracted by the fact that no attacking players get bps. CBs like Vertonghen, Lovren, and Hangeland will almost always see bps in a 0-0 draw, just like in a 1-0 or 2-0 win. In fact, the premium CBs (for their teams) are likely to get 3 bps in a 0-0 game. Additionally, a lot of defenders will be tied in 0-0 draws. We're likely to see 10+ bps awarded in a single 0-0 draw. Only time will tell, of course, but it'd be silly not to keep your eye on CBs who are head and shoulders better than the rest of their team.

Shouldn't it be 199 out of 760 games though, since there are two teams playing in each game, with the possibility of each getting a CS, i.e 0-0?

That would bring it down to 2.6 CS per GW...

I think he's a pretty good option although the consensus probably overrates him a little bit. He still is what he is: a cheap, very attacking fullback in a probable top 8 or so team. He had 5 assists last year in only 2000 minutes, and I think Everton will still be okay, if not great defensively. Distin/Jags/Howard aren't just going to crumble because of the new manager.

Given Martinez's history, no, you shouldn't expect too many clean sheets. However, I could see as many as four coming in the next seven weeks (WBA, car, NEW, HUL). I don't expect the team to keep cleanies at that rate all year, but given his attacking potential plus this favorable run of fixtures, I'm happy to be getting on the bandwagon early.

I'm definitely biased as an American, but I think he looked about as good as striker can without getting more than 2 points (which is, admittedly, not all that great). He has been in the best form of his life for the USA with 7 goals and 2 assists in his last 5 games for us. I'll give him another game or two to get results before I get rid of him. Sess couldn't possibly be worse next week and Giacherini should improve as he settles into the team, so Altidore should have better service in coming games.

I think at least 5 should go up. But we'll see. Can't wait for all that nonsense, I'm off to bed.

He's nailed while Kompany and/or Nastasic is out. Until they sign Pepe of course.

No need to double up Liverpool with Sturridge if I aleady have Coutinho? Play Benteke vs Liverpool is not the worst thing in the world is it?

I can see that being an open game, typical Liverpool will dominate possession and press high only to be thwarted by a Villa counter-attacking sucker punch.

Yeah and seems like Benteke loves scoring against Liverpool

So I'm keeping him instead of taking Sturridge on (for a hit) and assess the situation.

I hope Coutinho scores and gives and assist to Toure. And Benteke scores a hatty.

      😉
