The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Monday

City turn on the style as Manuel Pellegrini gets his Etihad tenure up and running with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Newcastle. While the hosts dazzled going forward, their injury problems at the back mounted after their skipper was subbed off before the final whistle:

The Game Changer

With four goals over the pre-season fixtures, Edin Dzeko had finished the summer as top scorer for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The new City boss had responded by suggesting the Bosnian was his main striker – a comment many thought that, somewhere along the line, had been lost in translation.

A brace for Bosnia in last week’s defeat by the USA, however, signalled his form ahead of this evening’s match with Newcastle and Pellegrini backed up his faith by selecting Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic as Sergio Aguero’s partner in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Fantasy managers have been stung by Dzeko before but tonight’s showing is hugely encouraging for a player that is so favourably priced across the Fantasy games. He may have delivered just one assist from this evening’s encounter but his display deserved so much more – he managed an impressive eight shots; equalling the sum total offered by David Silva, Aguero, Yaya Toure and sub Negredo. With a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Hull, he looks the ideal replacement for those looking for an escape route from Romelu Lukaku.

The Underused

Having failed to play all pre-season, Sergio Aguero was treated with caution by Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway. With summer recruits Negredo and Jovetic added to the mix, it looked more likely than Pellegrini would ease him back into the fold for the first three games, affording Aguero time to return to full fitness over September’s international break.

Instead, the Argentine was installed alongside Dzeko for the demolition of Newcastle, with Jovetic unable to even make the bench. As the hosts swept the sorry Magpies aside, Aguero was quick to open his account for the season – slotting home just after 20 minutes to put his side two ahead.

Subbed off just after the hour mark, it’s apparent Pellegrini will remain careful with his game time but, while Robin Van Persie squares up to Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive weeks, Aguero’s 7% Fantasy Premier League ownership makes him a deadly differential for back-to-back showdowns against two promoted sides.

The Selection Poser

The sight of Vincent Kompany limping off with what appeared to be a groin problem leaves Pellegrini sweating on his defensive options ahead of the trip to Wales. With City’s other first-choice central defender Matija Nastasic still to return to action after sustaining an ankle injury over the summer, Joleon Lescott’s security of starts now looks a little more secure at the heart of defence.

Micah Richards’ official twitter account has this evening claimed he, too, is sidelined “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury – potentially, Javi Garcia may have to slot in alongside Lescott if the injuries don’t improve over the weekend. Depending on the Kompany prognosis, Pellegrini may go shopping for cover before the transfer window is closed.

Money no object who would you rather have for next few geeks

    Dzeko or Aguero?

A lot will have Dzeko so not having him could hurt you, but Aguero looks like he was taking off to be rested for coming games!?

I think aguero was taken off as he wasn't fully fit. I expect that will be the pattern until he regains full fitness.

I've already got Dzeko but tempted in getting both. I know there is a risk of rotation but look at the fixtures - Cardiff , and Hull at home, especially compared to mufc, Chelsea, Liverpool

Dzeko looked poor, he had eight shots and no goals. Anyone leading the line for man city against a poor Newcastle should have had a brace at least.

Negredo looked strong and hungry I expect him to replace dzeko next game.

Wally wasn't impressing at all against Villa, but I'm not transferring him out. Fulham at Craven Cottage could be several goals, and in that case Walcott could be good to have.

yeah, I have to agree here. Wally was poor vs Villa, but generally the whole team didn't impress. I am not loosing faith in him tough, as I believe they will be eager on redemption and Wally can be extremely explosive at any time.

He'd be an obvious one, but I may be pushed to wait with this transfer till before GW3. Then if Dzeko starts again vs Cardiff, I can't see him doing it again vs Hull. On the other hand, if he is rested vs CAR, he becomes my favourite before Hull confrontation

one arsenal is enough for me at the moment seeing as they're kinda in shambles at the moment.,have too many injuries and not enough depth, paired with CL fixtures

I'm tempted but not too sure. and wonder if lukaku starts vs villa and does well maybe he'll get a start vs united and eventually nail down the starting spot... 😕 i'm probably delusional though. it's just one rotation threat for another... and it means a transfer down the line getting rid of dzeko if he doesn't nail down a spot. but I do see the potential in it

There's a good reason for that...a lot of strikers in the league can score, and do it well, and make no mistake: they will, especially after more time settling in for the season. Think about how many good, mostly nailed on forwards who on their day can wreck most defenses there are under say, 10m.

I get the impression that the new BPs system results in more ties and accordingly more players get Bonus Points:

Man City: 5 players got BPs
    Chelsea: 4 players got BPs
West Ham: 4 players got BPs
    Arsenal-WHM: 4 players got BPs

4 games out of 10 so far had more than 3 players colleting BPs.

The cumulative average per game is 7.2pts, vs the normal 6 pts (3+2+1).

All in all, this suggests higher scoring from higher bonus points, all other things being equal, and therefore make the 4 point hit for extra transfer easier to offset.

    Please comment:

For example, it makes me less reluctant to spend -4 on a defender if a CS is worth 4pts + 2bps

yes, exactly. These points based on which BAPS are being added are generally small. That is why we will face a lot of situation that more than 3 players will be awarded by BAPS.

I generally like the new BAPS system, but it is one of its biggest disadv. IMO. From time to time, if there were situation 4-5 players got BAPS, it was ok. Now, it is a nightmare and a lot of controversy.

Sort of true, hits are probably more likely to pay themselves off this year to some extent. However, 4 points is 4 points, and your rivals who don't take a hit are playing under the same scoring system so are equally likely to be scoring higher as well.

Nolan - New, Stoke, Soton, Eve, Hull
Taarabt - Ars, New, WBA, Che, Car
HBA - WHA, Ful, Avl, Hull, Eve

Who'd you prefer? HBA was shite last night IMO, didn't watch Fulham's game, how was Taarabt? Leaning towards Nolan.

Taarabt was average. Not his same fancy self I thought. Siggy could be wonderful.

Thing is with Nolan, you know what you're going to get. HBA/Siggy/Taarabt are all wait and watch IMO. Need to see Newcastle perform against the lower teams in the league first.

fair enough then. It also depends who you already have. I guess you would want Barkley to be one of your 4.5mid and he is already 4.6. Zab will rise at least once, if not more by then (unless you already have him, then it doesn't matter). Nolan is also into rise by GW4 IMO.

did n e 1 figure out what the net tranfers in rate was for a player to go up his first 0.1 looked like about 50k to me way higher than normal.....i suppose it will stop people winning who know very little about football as they build up value then get a team with all the top players

Frankly, no one really is at City. There's no way he'll get 90 every game but if you are two strikers and 5th mid are solid, I would still start him most weeks.

14 goals each of the last two seasons and could see more minutes this year
