Scout Report – Pablo Osvaldo

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino pulled off a real transfer coup late last week by acquiring Pablo Osvaldo from AS Roma for a club record fee of £15m. The Italian international arrives at St Mary’s on a four-year contract and is the third big-money buy this summer, following the acquisition of Dejan Lovren and Victor Wanyama for a combined £20 million.

The move reunites the Argentine-born forward with Pochettino after he previously played under the Saints boss for Spanish outfit Espanyol. Officially introduced to the press yesterday, Osvaldo admitted the club’s long-term interest, allied with the chance to work with Pochettino again, was something he simply couldn’t turn down:

“It’s the club that showed the most interest in me. Second of all I know Mauricio and I know how he works. I’m very happy to be working with him. …He’s magnificent. It’s fantastic, great to work with him. He is a great motivator and for me it’s very important to work with people who appreciate and respect how I work. For many years people haven’t appreciated that. I know him well and how he sets out his teams. The season I had at Espanyol was my best as a footballer. In a personal sense, I think I did well playing under him. I want to repeat that and improve it. I’m confident that will happen and I can’t wait to start. And also because I wanted to play in the Premier League, I’ve been dreaming about it and I want to do something important in the league. “

The History

It’s fair to say the 27-year-old is a somewhat nomadic character. Starting his career in the country of his birth with Huracan, Osvaldo scored 11 times in 33 matches back in 2005 before making his way to Italy with Atalanta. After notching once in three appearances, he was on his travels to Lecce, producing eight goals in 31 matches, but yet again lasted a single season in his new surrounds; this time Osvaldo was snapped up by Fiorentina, where he produced just five goals and a single assist over 21 Serie A appearances.

Loaned to Bologna midway through the 2008/09 campaign, he went on to play 25 times, producing just three goals and an assist, before a switch to La Liga – initially on loan – saw him finally find his feet. With 20 goals and four assists over 44 league matches in Spain, Osvaldo’s eye for goal persuaded Roma to bring him back to Italy ahead of the 2011/12 season. While his first year was impressive – 11 goals and five assists in 26 league matches – the six foot striker really hit his stride last term, registering an impressive 16 goals and a pair of assists over 29 games.

On the international stage, Osvaldo has turned out for Italy on 10 occasions and found the net four times, with three strikes in four World Cup qualifiers last year.

The Prospects

After an eventful time at his previous club, Osvaldo will be hoping to settle at St Mary’s. Over his two years in the Italian capital, the six foot forward had a somewhat rocky relationship with the club’s bosses, fans and players and, most notoriously, punched a team-mate who failed to pass him the ball. A hot-headed, tempestuous talent, his history with Pochettino will be key to ensuring Osvaldo keeps his cool and allows Southampton to get the best out of his undoubted abilities.

Given the club’s outlay, it’s fair to assume the forward will be a key protagonist in Pochettino’s side – with a World Cup just around the corner, he looks guaranteed starts as he stakes a claim for inclusion in the Azzurri squad. In terms of his impact on the Saints’ shape, there are a number of theories doing the round – a 4-2-3-1 could see Osvaldo, Adam Lallana and Gaston Ramirez line up behind Rickie Lambert, for instance. Alternatively, a 4-3-1-2 with Osvaldo partnering Rickie Lambert up top has been bandied about, a 4-3-3 with Osvaldo on the flank and a 4-4-1-1, with the new boy leading the line just ahead of Lambert are all being mooted as potential formations.

While Lambert still looks integral to Pochettino’s style of play, Jay Rodriguez’s game time could be a real issue, though he may still get the nod over Ramirez, whose somewhat lethargic displays have failed to convince Pochettino. The Uruguayan’s lack of overall work rate doesn’t quite fit in with his manager’s high pressing game, while Rodriguez’s energetic displays, on the other hand, have caught the eye since the departure of Nigel Adkins.

Having kicked off their season with a win at West Brom, Southampton seem primed for investment due to a hugely appealing run of upcoming fixtures. Sunderland, West Ham, Palace and Swansea are all set to roll up to St Mary’s in the next six Gameweeks and, with a trip to Norwich also on their agenda, there’s plenty reason for optimism as we assess Pochettino’s kindly-priced Fantasy assets.

Priced at 8.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Osvaldo – for all his talent – may still struggle to oust Lambert in our Fantasy affections. If, as expected, the latter keeps his spot as the most advanced forward, his spot-kick and share of set-piece duties continue to bolster his strong value appeal. Kinder on the budget at 7.5 in FPL, Lambert is already off the mark after a late penalty at West Brom on Saturday and Romelu Lukaku owners are turning to the Saints man as a similarly-priced alternative. If, in the unlikely event that Lambert drifts out the picture, Osvaldo looks a definite option but it’s difficult to see past the England man as he looks to replicate the form that saw him finish last term as the third top scoring forward in the FPL game.

I only started with Hazard this season, thinking whatever points I get behind gw1 because of the lack of DGW players I can make up gw3 and save the wildcard too. So far it worked out, don't really need the transfer to fix anything, so I was thinking about swapping Hazard out for someone who can do better in the next few gameweeks, probably until the international break (2 games). Who would you pick? The other midfielders I have are Walcott, Silva and Mirallas.

Newcastle has 2 home games (WHM FUL), not sure about their form though, Navas from City, or maybe Yaya (sto SUN)? How about Snodgrass (hul SOT), or would it make sense to double up on Everton (WBA car)?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Thank you, that's what I was thinking of becuase I wasn't really convinced of either of those options (hence my post), but yet again I'm not entirely sure about what Hazard can do v Utd either if he plays like he did v Hull.

What do you guys think of my latest plan to shed Negredo and Lukaku?

    Lukaku-> Lambert
    Negredo -> Aguero

Will be for an 8 point hit as I've already done Terry->Coleman
Gets a decent Man City player and I'll be ready for Aguero ->RVP for GW4 after ditching Hazard.

an 8 point hit this early in the season doesn't make sense. Proper knee-jerk. Hold your horses, I'd say. I do think Negredo will get playing time soon, mostly against Hull I think. I'd stick with him, and personally stick with Lukaku for the CHE-MUN game as well, as I think he'll start.

If you feel Aguero, Lambert & Coleman - 8pts will outscore Lukaku, Negredo & Terry next week then go for it.

Taking into account MCI's fixtures coupled with CHE's UTD trip / blank you just might be onto something...

My point is defenses in Serie A are not what they used to be. He scored against Inter and Juve last year but wonder how many of the better teams he scored against. Think the Juve goal was a penalty aswell. With Totti and Lamela you are going to get a lot of chances.

Hmm. I have money in the bank. Lukaku -> Soldado is an obvious FT whatever happens tonight, isn't it? I mean whatever Lukaku does, there really is no guarantee that he will start versus Manchester United. And even if he does, that's one of the toughest fixtures you can play, while Soldado has good fixtures, no blank and is on penalties; genuine captaincy contender for GW2.

      Davis - your 4million non-playing keeper or Hazard your 9.5million beast-mid!?

Surely you picked Davis never planning to play him, stick with that surely - if you truly believe you need rid of Hazard* AND Davis then you're going to be want to put that 9.5million to work before you worry about your second keeper!

That said of your three Chelsea players I would personally be keeping Hazard, Ivan plays Man U away next week, CS gonna be difficult, Lukaku is losing money (maybe) and obviously most risky for rotation.

*Mildly disagree for what it's worth, but be to early to be certain.

All this talk about bonus points....why not just scrap the whole thing? The whole bonus points system?

Last season it angered a lot of people, this year just 1 GW in, its angering a lot of people! Its nothing but confusion. We're never all happy. I think the best way forward is to just scrap the system and the only points players score, are those they score in game, plus double if you have them as captain.

    Boring? Not really?
    Fairer? Yes!
    Better? .....

The only "issue" I had last season were the phantom assists, which seems to have been looked at considering Dzeko wasn't awarded the SIlva goal assist. Last season he would of been awarded that assist. Even as a Dzeko owner, I am still happy with this as it is a fairer system. The pass should at least be intended "direct"...remember Bale vs. Wigan assist-gate last season?

Its a more legit system that way. But the BP system is just crazy and continues to frustrate. We all said that goalkeepers, defenders and defensive midfielders were hard done by, but now it seems like its swung too much the other way. There needed to be middle ground with the BP system, not one or the other.

    Thoughts?

It's a part of the game. It isn't fair that Defensive mids don't get the points. Life isn't fair

We know which players will likely get the BAPS. Why not just get them? People need to get over the BAPS system used all those years ago

Defenders only get BAPS when they either score, assist or keep a cleanie. It's hardly unfair anyway since they're doing their job

Similarly, strikers ending up with a goal or assists are liekly to be involved too, not all the time, but more often than not

Well look at Chesney then who is in my team....saved a penalty, had a terrible game really, conceded 3 goals. Lost the game.

Scored 7 points. 6 and +1 bonus point.

Thats equivalent to a clean sheet and a bonus point is it not?

Did Arsenal win the game? Or was it 0-0? 😆

            He saved a penalty....

The Bnous point doesn't reward players that have an impact on the game anymore. It rewards players with best indiviual stats. Chesney's score is hardly a surprise in this case

To my mind the whole point of the bonus system is to reward players who make a decent contribution to a game, but would otherwise go unrewarded. The bonus systems we have had in place over the years do not really achieve this purposes, but I am in favour of the concept since if it worked properly it should broaden the pool of players who are worth selecting.

What about Man of The Match awards like in the Sky game?

Extra 5 points for the MOTM, 10 if you have them as captain.

        I like that system.

Can't see how less points is less fun though?

What difference will it really make if bonus points are scrapped?

I like it when I benefit from it, same as everyone probably. Can it not be decided by voters/experts rather than by stats?

This gw, i can't work out why Sturridge got none, despite scoring the only goal that won the game, great strike it was too, and yet Johnson got 2 bonus points, for a clean sheet, the only liverpool defender to get bonus points though. Begovic too was short changed there. The bonus points should have been for Sturridge, Begovic and Mignolet. No one came out of that game thinking that Johnson was the second best player.
